00:00I was invited to this girl's birthday party which was at a roller skating rink and I really
00:05had a crush on her and I wanted to be cool and so I got her a dangerous mind soundtrack and
00:09then I went in there and I gave it to her and she's like oh I already have like three of these
00:13and I was like oh okay well I got mine. Hello I'm Sebastian Stan and today I'm going to play
00:21Tastemaker with Vanity Fair. You should keep all of that. I don't necessarily recommend things to
00:31people because people don't ask me for recommendations. Actually sometimes maybe
00:36about certain restaurants I would say or movies I guess you know. Let's get this thing started.
00:42A superhero movie for a pretentious film buff. Well The Dark Knight I mean is there anything more
00:54than that anybody that loves film would love that movie. I really uh loved Batman Returns with Michelle
01:02Pfeiffer as Catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer you know but um I just loved the tone of the movie
01:12the music it felt just like an experience and Batman I mean it was one of the first times we saw
01:22him on screen through Michael Keaton as a as a person a real person and it's a character movie
01:28actually and and in a lot of ways and yeah it was a movie I watched a lot when I was growing up.
01:33A TV series. For someone who just finished Gossip Girl. Well Euphoria right is sort of pretty
01:46interesting and pretty pretty incredible. It's hard for me with TV I it's hard I have to admit. I I've
01:53been really actually pretty devoted to White Lotus I have to say. Beef was one that I loved and I will
02:01definitely watch the second season. Every night for the past two weeks I've been like Shogun Shogun
02:06tonight's the night and I haven't made it yet but I'm going to because I I just it looks incredible.
02:13It's weird I go that's why I go back to movies for some reason it's hard with a series I feel the
02:17pressure of okay if I'm starting this I have to finish it. So sometimes movies are easier.
02:22How frequently these days are people bringing a Gossip Girl to you?
02:26Oh it still happens for sure. Randomly when I'm sort of waiting at a stoplight or something uh
02:35somebody would be like
02:39and I'll be like Bucky oh no Carter Basin okay right
02:43oh yes an NYC restaurant
02:54for someone trying to impress a date what NYC restaurant that I want to continue to go to
03:00freely uh we learned this lesson back in the old days of Gossip Girl when Chase Crawford decided to
03:09uh I think pretty sure tell People Magazine that he liked to hang out at the dark room
03:17in New York City on the Lower East Side and the dark room enjoyed a lot of business that was a
03:24spot we used to go to all the time I guess you could go to Raul's people people go to Raul's in
03:29Soho or now probably Williamsburg is a pretty you know impressive date kind of spot I think suggest
03:39a place to go and have a drink and then book a restaurant just in case you know it goes well
03:46and then you get hungry and you have a spot to go and you're like oh by the way I made
03:50a reservation at this place and then you can just kind of you know be impromptu about it
03:57and then maybe you don't go or maybe it's going really well and you go
04:00a Sebastian Stan movie for someone's grandmother I haven't done a movie for a grandmother yet
04:13maybe I should you know what I would like to recommend actually for a grandmother the movie
04:19Fresh because I think a grandmother would really enjoy the craziness of that film don't underestimate
04:26grandparents they have way crazier dirtier minds than any of us so I'm just I'm just telling you
04:32I grew up with grandparents which is why I love grandparents but maybe I'll go with Fresh
04:36and then a movie to not see maybe don't watch uh this movie called The Apparition
04:44I've definitely snuck in snacks into a movie theater in my life wine um I also vaguely remember like
05:03a grilled salmon Caesar salad or something I used to work at a movie theater which was very interesting
05:08so I've been on the other side of it though the thing that I hated the most is when people were loud
05:13like when somebody was really loud and then they would cut somebody else would come up to you and
05:17be like can you tell someone can you tell the person in the back row to be quiet and then I'd
05:21have to go in there and be like the bad person but it was great because it was during it was during the
05:2690s and I remember it was all all of the I know what you did last summer urban legend all those the
05:33scream movies Blair Witch Project all that stuff was happening while I was working at a movie theater and
05:38so I a got to watch all those movies if kids were nice I would sometimes let them go into the rated r
05:44movie even though they probably shouldn't have but they were like can we go and can we sneak in that
05:49movie I'd be like yeah you seem pretty cool so yeah go ahead don't bring like a kebab in a in a movie
05:57theater or a soup or something like that you know because in the dark it spills and it's hot some elaborate
06:04kind of like a ribeye steak
06:11broadway show
06:16for a musical skeptic I have just the one moulin rouge can't go wrong I mean like you will know the
06:24songs and when you go there when I went to see it it was a rock concert it was amazing everyone got a
06:30drink they and they everyone was singing with the with uh with each song moulin rouge will change your
06:36musical experience I did a lot of musicals when I was very young and I remember I went through a phase
06:43where I was obsessed with rent rent had just come out on broadway and I I was one of those kids where
06:50yeah I knew every every song every word but rent also not a very conventional musical it's kind of this rock
06:57opera
07:02a horror movie
07:06for someone who claims they're never scared who really is always scared I would say good night
07:12mommy very disturbing film I'm into more like
07:18I want to say like elevated horror I mean I guess the witch is a very debatable genre film
07:24although technically it's meant to be horror but is Nosferatu considered to be horror I'm not sure but
07:32incredible movie just so heightened and artistic creative I still feel
07:39that the shining still manages to do the job years and years later and that's the sign of a great movie
07:46when it can stand the test of time one more uh there's a movie called the audition
07:56and that one's also pretty disturbing it's about a director trying to cast
08:01a lead role and this actress comes in and the rest is history much like in hollywood
08:08a movie soundtrack for
08:16for someone falling in love uh well I remember growing up in high school somehow listening to the
08:26great expectations soundtrack I think when I fell for somebody the her soundtrack by arcade fire is very
08:36emotional soundtrack when I was in high school the coolest thing you could ever give anybody was
08:43the dangerous mind soundtrack with Michelle Pfeiffer I was invited to this girl's birthday party which
08:50was at a roller skating rink and I really had a crush on her and I wanted to be cool and so I got
08:55her a dangerous mind soundtrack and then I went in there and I gave it to her and she's like oh I already
09:00have like three of these and I was like oh okay well I got mine in high school I would oh I loved getting
09:08movie soundtracks in high school because you would get different artists you know it was a mix like
09:13I remember the Batman Forever soundtrack uh I really really liked Pulp Fiction was another one Pulp Fiction
09:20Jackie and Jackie Brown were great soundtracks
09:25a podcast
09:29for someone interested in uh self-help I like a few
09:34no there is uh the gray area on Spotify is really great it's amazing I mean so many different
09:41people different subject matters I like armchair with Dax Shepard school of greatness is another really
09:47good one I like hearing stories of people who've been through things I think I think it's important
09:54to kind of always hear someone's journey and then you can kind of relate to it or not
10:03a novel
10:07for a news junkie who needs some levity I would suggest George Saunders a swim in a pond in the rain
10:13it really settles the breath brings down a nervous system you remember it's not about you
10:21and it's not about any of us and we're all gonna die anyway I think like movies books for me end up
10:28being like a relationship you kind of are spending time with a friend and it's sort of this back and
10:35forth that happens between you and and this piece of art or something it speaks to you in a certain way
10:41and I find so often now we're being told what to think and what to feel and what to take into
10:46something I think for everyone it it's a new discovery it's just like go take a chance like
10:52pick out a book and don't even read the back
10:58a movie
11:02for someone immigrating to America if they still can very difficult for me not to obviously mention the
11:08godfather I would say the godfather part two more because that goes back in time and you really see
11:14him coming to New York and you see the statue of liberty and for some and and he sees it from the
11:22boat and so on and and for some reason I don't know every time I run you know in New York like I
11:27run on the west side highway I always look at the statue of liberty and I never it just never gets old to
11:33me because I'm like this is that symbol you know that represented so much for people coming here
11:39starting their lives from scratch and bringing culture and different food and different history
11:47and family and it's an origin story and you realize how much of this country is founded by immigrants
11:53a daytime activity in NYC
12:02for a group of lifelong friends honestly I could walk in central park
12:08and I do as much as I can brings me back to when Harry met Sally there's a lot of walk walks and talks
12:14you could do especially if you're lifelong friends you probably have a lot to be always catching up on so
12:20yeah I would walk from 80th street and Broadway all the way down to like downtown walking in the
12:28city there's nothing like that because you're seeing so much life you're seeing so many different people
12:33and clears your mind and and it gives you perspective uh in terms of whatever else you need to be talking
12:41to your lifelong friend about
12:44I remember when I was first backpacking through Europe and this was in 2003 or so and there were
12:53no phones and stuff I just walked around the best thing to do is just walk you just you see the most
13:00out of everything you know go go take a trip to a city you've never been and put your phone in your
13:04pocket you know it's there you'll never get lost and just like go see where it takes you you know and
13:10you'll discover like that restaurant that the locals go to or or you'll see something you didn't know
13:17about or whatever you know cool that's a cut all right thanks
