00:00A superstar is laid to rest. A collegiate co-ed hearthrob from yon and breathed his last.
00:11And barely 24 hours have passed since the world's beloved people's pope passed on to return to the Father.
00:17It may be blue skies, bright and sunny outside, but it is raining in the hearts of millions here at home and all over the planet.
00:24A melancholic, mournful Easter Tuesday afternoon to all. I'm Denise Osorio and this is PTV News Now.
00:32A national artist, Nora Onor, one of the nation's few and treasured national artists and the country's only superstar,
00:40was laid to her eternal resting place in the hallowed grounds of the libingan ng mga bayani this morning.
00:46Amid the sweltering heat and humidity of today's sunny and muggy weather,
00:50Madam Nora Onor, national artist for film and the broadcast arts,
00:55took her place beneath the sacred earth and shrine to the country's bravest and lionized heroes at the libingan ng mga bayani.
01:03Her casket was showered with confetti and golden petals during the interment.
01:08And in a fitting tribute and exclamation point to honoring La Onor,
01:12the president declared today, Tuesday, April 22, a national day of mourning
01:17to mark the solemnity of today's sad occasion in the country's history.
01:22During the Lenten weekend, the president also called La Onor a gift to the nation
01:27the night before the president and First Lady Lisa Araneta Marcos
01:30took time out and headed to the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig
01:34to pay their final respects to La Onor on the final day of her wake.
01:38The first couple spoke with the bereaved family and took photos with Nora's children
01:43along with character actor and former honor, screen partner,
01:48Tirso Cruz III, and veteran actress Celia Rodriguez.
01:53Also today, a stalwart of original Filipino music or OPM,
01:57dubbed the heartthrob of college ladies in the 70s and 80s,
02:02also succumbed to the ravages of colon cancer.
02:04Haji Alejandro, the original kilabot ng mga kolehyala
02:09and winner of the first Metro Pop Music Competition
02:12and known for his classics, OPM songs,
02:16nakapagtataka, panakipbutas, and kiganda ng ating musika,
02:22is survived by two daughters, Rachel and Chef Barney,
02:26and son, Mojo Fly drummer Ali Diaz Alejandro.
02:29During the last decade of his career,
02:31Haji partnered with contemporaries and renowned local artists of the OPM genre,
02:37Rico Puno, Marco Sison, Ray Valera, and Nonoy Zuniga,
02:42collectively known as the Hitmakers.
02:47Amid a warm and bright sunny weather,
02:51the President earlier today headed to northern Mindanao
02:53to help launch the two-story Balingoan Port Expansion Project,
02:57the latest access to the gateway of Mindanao's most progressive and rapidly growing region.
03:04The expanded port now touts a new two-story port operation structure
03:08that features a 500-seat capacity lounge,
03:12a more spacious floor area with longer ticket counters,
03:16additional lounges, concessionaire spaces, and restrooms.
03:19The backup area or exterior premises of the project has a size of a little over a hectare
03:25or 10,000 square meters to allow for more cargo handling, storage, and logistical operations.
03:32This makeover or expansion of Balingoan Port will draw even more local and foreign tourists,
03:37seeking a faster direct trip to tourist haven Kamigin Island off the tip of northern Mindanao.
03:43A new gate complex is under construction to filter traffic in and out of the port area
03:48and enhance security within the port premises.
03:52Together with the President in this launching and inspection trip
03:55were PPA General Manager Jay Santiago,
03:58Special Assistant Antonio Lagdameyo,
04:00Department of Transportation Chief Vivicentia Dizon,
04:02and Presidential Communications Operations Head Secretary Jay Ruiz.
04:06Since the early days of the Trump 2.0 presidency,
04:12Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE agents and Homeland Security operatives
04:16have been busy sniffing out and rounding up illegal or undocumented migrants
04:22all over the Union for deportation.
04:24A Chicago non-profit group is helping these spooked people
04:27who are stuck in their homes and afraid to leave.
04:30VOA's Veronica Villafaña narrates this report by Enrique Garcia Fuentes.
04:36Marilu and Jesus Vargas had been busy buying and delivering groceries
04:41to undocumented immigrants who say they are afraid of being detained by immigration agents.
04:50On this day, they helped a mother who says she was threatened at her workplace.
04:55She did not want to show her face or share her name for fear of deportation.
04:59We're calling her Maria.
05:01A woman came into her workplace and said she was going to call immigration and all of us there.
05:07It's been two weeks now that I haven't left my house.
05:11That's why she turned to Mijos.
05:12The Vargas family founded the community non-profit organization to support immigrants in Chicago.
05:21Mijos provided her with milk, cereal, beans, tortillas, and meat.
05:25Sometimes the people they help can reimburse them, but the couple mostly covers expenses out of their own pocket.
05:33We're bringing hope to those who don't have it.
05:36We're working to help those who are afraid to go out shopping
05:39or take their children to school by providing the basic services they need to survive.
05:45The Vargasists say they have helped about 25 families since President Donald Trump took office
05:54and announced large-scale deportations.
05:57They say they do what they can, but acknowledge that the need far exceeds what they are able to provide.
06:05Some benefactors send us small donations allowing us to go buy groceries for these families.
06:10We have our own jobs, but that doesn't mean we can't help our community.
06:14We need to make room to show solidarity with those who need it most during these challenging times.
06:22Chicago is a so-called sanctuary city.
06:26Officials will not ask about immigration status or disclose that information to most federal authorities.
06:31It is one of several U.S. cities where the Trump administration has carried out immigration enforcement actions.
06:38If you're in a country illegally, you're on the table because it's not okay to violate laws of this country.
06:45You've got to remember, every time you enter this country illegally, you violate a crime.
06:49The Trump administration says more than 11,000 undocumented immigrants were arrested in its first two weeks in office.
06:56For migrants like Maria, the situation is terrifying.
06:59But she is thankful for the help from Mijos.
07:03I feel blessed by God for these good people.
07:09There are not enough words to express my gratitude.
07:13Despite her fear, she knows that eventually she will have to leave her home.
07:17For Enrique Garcia Fuentes in Chicago, Veronica Villafañe, VOA News.
07:24So that's a wrap for this afternoon's show.
