00:00:57when it seems like there's more pressure he's more calm and settles in he's done an incredible
00:01:03job with runners in scoring position most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the
00:01:08baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he's able
00:01:13to wiggle off situations and get his team back in the dugout all right ready to get underway and now

00:01:26gone that one felt good his 17th of the year just like that they move in front it's one nothing
00:01:34all so much for settling into this game boog no courtesy first pitch take right there he was
00:01:53ready from the second he stepped into the box got a pitch to hit jumped all over and i tell you what
00:01:58that'll fire up the guys in your dugout just wait box now batting second the third baseman in there and

00:02:15oh now this one is blasted to right four get it way back there ain't gone
00:02:30he made him pay for that one his 17th of the year it's two nothing
00:02:39back to back jacks and this club is fired up right now boog i mean this is the kind of thing where you
00:03:00really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just
00:03:05continues to grow number eight now at the plate
00:03:09batting third the left fielder first offering and it just misses singe maybe some nerves getting the
00:03:17best of him in the first well it's hard to know exactly if it's nerves or not but he just doesn't
00:03:21have it right now those hitters on the other side they're going to say it's nerves and use that as a
00:03:25competitive edge to try to jump on him even more

00:12:43and down towards the bottom of the lineup hitting eighth here adam jones and boogie's a fun and bat to
00:12:49watch i mean definitely a threat whenever he's got that bat in his hands but for me it's it's all
00:12:54about the mechanics they're so sound and when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing
00:12:59so much consistency that bat stays in the zone for a long time and he squares up the baseball a lot

00:13:13they're so reliant on the matchups nowadays chris and it's huge when you don't have to sit a guy or
00:13:18platoon him when you can hit you know both sides in terms of pitchers arms you're a guy that it's hard
00:13:24to take out of the lineup and i think it's very important today when everything is under the microscope

00:20:24relationship players and coaches have with umpires i mean you see these guys a lot
00:20:28yeah book these guys are all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level so
00:20:34when you respect that i think over time you can develop a relationship with some of these guys
00:20:40now about it number eight
00:20:51and next for the red sox number eight he's someone that you might not describe as having elite level
00:20:57speed but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game but this guy's definitely a plus runner but
00:21:03what i love about him is that he goes all out every single time never takes a break it's guys like
00:21:09that even though they don't have the elite speed the fact that they're consistent with it they make moves
00:21:14on the base paths
00:21:18all in one now swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone
00:21:24and a swing and a miss and that's that one left for the red sox but they lead it four to nothing
00:21:38back now at orio park and the batter now cal ripton jr leading off singing he's a guy that covers both
00:21:50sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport how difficult is that to do well just look at
00:21:56the back of my bubblegum card you'll see how hard it is these guys are great man they have the ability
00:22:01to look out there but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch those that can really sharpen things
00:22:07on the outer half those are the ones that become elite next offering is in for a strike

00:23:51in and getting a feel for his pitches throwing them where he wants to right now so we'll see how long he

00:25:08professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and
00:25:13gets ready for the ball game i tell you what his teammates feed off of the leadership that he shows

00:25:22well he's back out here for the third and after the first couple of innings pretty rough i think
00:25:26the skipper is looking for him to give him a little bit of length see if he can save the bullpen some

00:33:13chris you played here in 2002 what are the memories that stand out as to being a member of the
00:33:19baltimore orioles for me it was just pulling into the parking lot and having those that were
00:33:24there with a an encouraging smile or a pat on the back regardless of how things were going
00:33:30it made it a lot easier to come to the ballpark whether you were doing well or you were struggling
00:33:35and then the way that they treated your family i mean this is a great place to play
00:33:39and i'd say it's got to be one of the top places in all of baseball

00:33:56and that drops in for a strike and you had a cameo in the movie money ball as
00:34:02an orioles player in a highlight clip

00:34:19oh you know that's got to be very frustrating for this guy he knows the strike zone extremely well
00:34:24and you know what good hitters are not going to compromise he'll take that punch out but ultimately
00:34:29stick with his plan and have more success than anything else

00:41:31basketball football you feel like he could thrive in one of those sports too
00:41:40first pitch and that's in for a strike i think it was sitting off speed right there because he just let the fastball go by

00:45:11so high it doesn't matter what kind of delivery that pitcher has what kind of velocity what kind of
00:45:17secondary stuff he is so settled in there he owns the home plate area
00:45:24pitch misses inside and that's ball one we'll always know cal ripkin for the streak but
00:45:29he was about so much more than that he really changed the way we think about the shortstop position

00:46:20and now it's filled up when ripkin came along he was not in the mold of a traditional shortstop he
00:46:28was a big strong guy his offense was just as strong as his fielding though and he had some pop
00:46:37the three two is off the outside edge and that is ball four well a breaking ball in that three two
00:46:43count kind of tells you that that's the pitch he has the most confidence in right now just couldn't
00:46:48find the strike zone now it's going to be pops jennings this guy has turned into a beast
00:46:56yeah even though middle infielders with power are common now ripkin still holds the record for most
00:47:02homers hit by a shortstop it might not be as unbreakable as one of his other records still pretty
00:47:08impressive though and the first offering is not close

00:47:55guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone

00:48:06he's so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field but he can jump you if you make a

00:50:21got him picks up strikeout number seven wow that's a tough call for the hitter but the pitcher will
00:50:35take that all day long not quite in the strike zone but he found a spot that the umpire is going to
00:50:42at least for now allow him to get that call so hitters are going to have to make an adjustment but
00:50:47pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can
00:50:51now at the plate number 13. jack swing went around that's strike one
00:51:01two walks in the inning already and he just doesn't seem comfortable out there like he can
00:51:16find the right mechanics and then repeat them next offering is in for a strike pretty impressive we
00:51:22haven't seen that pitch from him much but he's got a really good feel when he throws it

00:51:53chance to talk to a lot of opposing managers this guy scares managers on the other team as much as
00:52:00anyone and he gets to fly beneath the radar with the other more recognizable names in this lineup
