The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making it harder for members to vote in categories in which they have not watched all of the nominees. In the past, voters were always asked not to vote for a category if they hadn't watched all of the nominated projects, but the process operated entirely on an honor system. Moving forward, the Academy's e-voting system, in the final round of voting, will not allow members to access the ballot for categories in which they have not demonstrated that they have watched all of the nominees.

00:00The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making it harder for members to vote in categories in which they have not watched all of the nominees.
00:08In the past, voters were asked not to vote for a category if they hadn't watched all of the nominated projects, but the process is operated entirely on an honor system.
00:18Moving forward, the Academy's e-voting system in the final round of voting will not allow members to access the ballot for categories in which they have not demonstrated that they have watched all of the nominees.
00:28The Academy will track viewing via the members-only Academy Screening Room streaming app.
00:33As for films consumed elsewhere, like at screenings, film festivals, etc., members will have to fill out a form declaring when and where they watched a film.
00:41Based on anecdotal evidence, this is something that has become more of a concern for the Academy in recent years,
00:46since the organization massively expanded its membership and brought in a lot of younger members who are busier with their careers.
00:53This will presumably result in less coattail voting.
00:55The news came from the organization on Monday, along with the announcement of key dates and other new policies pertaining to the coming season.
