00:24Este reino é nosso
00:26Ninguém vai tomar isso
00:28A gente tem que tomar isso de nós.
00:33Nós matamos eles todos.
00:35Todos.
00:36Um.
00:37Um.
00:38Você não pode silenciar a voz de Deus, Antipas!
00:41Ele não é um profeta.
00:43Ele é só um homem ordinário
00:45que brilha
00:47como todos os outros.
00:49Dê-me
00:51a head de João o Baptista
00:54ou a placa.
00:56Você não pode fazer tudo de sua própria.
00:59Eles precisam de mim.
01:01Não haverá
01:03não desculpa.
01:07Quem sou eu?
01:10Eu amo apenas o Senhor Deus!
01:18O que você disse?
01:22Tudo.
01:26Tudo ok.
01:39Não habitamos ainda o jovem.
01:43Também o homem diz o opaço onda de política
01:46do brindos...
01:47Quem morreu, sagreuna dela.
01:48Não é?
01:49Ou mesmo?
01:50Ele?
02:21Essa é a nossa terra.
03:02O Senhor, o Senhor, o Messias.
03:05O Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor.
03:09E se você quiser uma propriedade,
03:11então aqui é minha.
03:13Você raise a hand contra o King Herod,
03:16e você vai perder.
03:17O Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor, o Senhor.
03:29Não há até onde chegar.
03:32Be grateful for the king's mercy
03:34On the eve of Jesus' birth
03:40Many Jews hold out hope for a savior
03:42Someone who will rescue them
03:44From the tyranny of King Herod
03:46And someone who will
03:49Relieve them from the tyranny
03:51Of the Roman Empire
04:02Jesus is born into a world
04:06Where every bit of land
04:09Everybody's life is touched by the Roman Empire
04:11It's extending from the Atlantic
04:15Really all the way over to the other side
04:17Of the Mediterranean
04:18It encompasses three continents
04:21And the equivalent of about
04:2330 modern day countries
04:26Like many territories in their empire
04:30The Romans don't rule Judea directly
04:33The Romans have established
04:35A local Jewish ruler
04:36A client king to rule in their place
04:39Herod the Great
04:41Our priests sacrifice daily
04:53To bring the Roman Emperor favor
04:54From our God
04:55The Emperor thinks it's best
05:00To send his right-hand man
05:02Marcus Vipsinius Agrippa
05:03To go into Jerusalem
05:05And check on the client king
05:07Herod the Great
05:08Implicit in the relationship with Rome
05:12Is that Herod will keep the peace
05:16And that he will assure
05:18That things like taxes are collected
05:20And passed on to the Romans
05:22If you look above
05:25You can see our latest addition
05:27The symbol of your legions
05:29And the lasting symbol
05:31Of our union
05:33Handcrafted by the finest
05:35Stonemason in Judea
05:37Herod decides to place an eagle
05:42Over one of the gates of the temple
05:44For the Jewish people in the first century
05:47The temple in Jerusalem
05:49Was the home of God on earth
05:54This eagle is incredibly controversial
05:58For many Jews
06:00This is a sacrilege
06:02Instead of being a defender
06:05Of the Jewish faith
06:06To them it seems
06:07As if Herod is just a puppet of Rome
06:09Very impressive
06:11And what is the local
06:16Situation
06:18There is no situation
06:21Judea is at peace
06:23Safe
06:24Under my firm hand
06:26And
06:27Rome's continued friendship
06:29Judea
06:32During this period
06:33Is absolutely
06:34Not
06:34Stable
06:35Herod has done things like
06:37He's built his palace
06:38Next to the Jewish temple
06:40In Jerusalem
06:41And around that
06:42He's actually fortified it
06:44He's turned it into a fortress
06:45With Roman soldiers
06:47Stationed around this
06:49Watching what's happening
06:50Around the temple
06:52Herod is a man
06:54Who is obsessed
06:55With power
06:56Solely for the sake of power
06:59And he sees everyone
07:00Around him
07:01Including
07:02His closest family members
07:04As a potential threat
07:06To that power
07:08The emperor was
07:11Sorry
07:12To hear about your wife's
07:13Sad passing
07:14Families
07:19Herod the Great
07:25Is a man of unhealthy
07:27Even infamous appetite
07:29Like many rulers
07:36In the ancient world
07:37He had multiple wives
07:38In his case
07:39He has ten wives
07:40And nine sons
07:41At least nine sons
07:43The wife he loved the most
07:49Mariamne
07:50Was executed
07:51On his orders
07:52In 29 BC
07:53When he became convinced
07:56That she was plotting
07:57Against him
07:58Hello
08:06My beloved
08:07Hello
08:08My beloved
08:09Hello
08:10My beloved
08:11My beloved
08:19Herod was so deeply
08:28In love with Mariamne
08:29That even after her death
08:31He wanted her to
08:32Be with him
08:33And so he
08:36According to rabbinic legend
08:37Had her body preserved
08:39In honey
08:39And would periodically
08:42Go to visit her
08:44This is the man who
08:50In the gospel of Matthew
08:52Will pose the first threat
08:54To the life of Jesus
08:56A man capable
08:57Of doing absolutely anything
08:59A real monster
09:01The town of Nazareth
09:25Where Mary and Joseph
09:26Are betrothed
09:27Sits in stark contrast
09:29To the opulence
09:31And political intrigue
09:32Of Jerusalem
09:33Nazareth is a backwater village
09:35With a population
09:37Of perhaps only a hundred
09:39That's it
09:40Jewish tradition dictates
09:47That a marriage contract
09:49Is signed
09:49And then there would have been
09:51A period of about a year
09:52Before the actual marriage
09:54Took place
09:54I hereby present
09:58This document to you
09:59It spells out
10:01My obligations to you
10:02In our impending marriage
10:04I'm a very lucky man
10:16I've spent my whole life
10:19With my parents
10:20The house I was born in
10:22Is all I know
10:23Mary is a Jewish girl
10:29Mary and Joseph's families
10:32Probably have known each other
10:33For a really long time
10:34We think this is going to be
10:35A good match
10:36She hasn't been with a man
10:39She is appropriately a virgin
10:41Saving herself for marriage
10:43As would have everyone
10:44In the culture
10:45These hands
10:47Are building us a home
10:48And these same hands
10:51Will protect you
10:52And the children we will have
10:54With my life if necessary
10:57I will never
11:02Let you fall
11:03Joseph is described
11:08As a tecton
11:09Which most people
11:11Think of as a carpenter
11:12But it actually means
11:14As a builder
11:15So you'd have to think
11:16Of Joseph as
11:18Being pretty physically fit
11:20A strong and capable presence
11:22The status of a tecton
11:26Is debated by scholars
11:27But it's probably
11:29On a lower rung
11:30Than a peasant
11:31Because peasants
11:33At least own their own land
11:34Except in the months
11:42Before Jesus' birth
11:43King Herod
11:44Is tearing up tradition
11:45He's kicked Jewish peasants
11:48Off their land
11:49And driving them
11:51Towards rebellion
11:52Just one day
11:56How is it that in just one day
12:02A single man can take everything
12:04All that we worked for
12:07Our homes
12:10Our land
12:12Where is the justice?
12:16Where is the Messiah?
12:22Send him
12:23Particularly in this period
12:28With the Roman Empire
12:30Now ostensibly in control
12:32Of Judea
12:33Among the common
12:35Everyday Jewish people
12:36There was a sense
12:38Almost a longing
12:39That a Messiah
12:41Must be on the way
12:43The Jewish people
12:47Are looking for
12:48A Messiah
12:49Who will come with a sword
12:50And leave behind
12:51A whole trail of blood
12:53In order to bring
12:54The Jews to freedom
12:55But in the gospel story
12:59What they're going to get
13:00Is a baby
13:01Don't be afraid
13:18Mary
13:19God loves you
13:23Soon
13:31You will become pregnant
13:33And give birth to a son
13:37And name him Jesus
13:40He will become a great man
13:46And will be called
13:47Son of the Most High
13:50And the Lord God
13:52Will give him
13:53The throne
13:54Of his ancestor
13:55David
13:57How can this be?
14:01I am still a virgin
14:02The Holy Spirit
14:07Will embrace you
14:08And the power
14:10Of the Most High
14:11Will shine upon you
14:13And the child
14:15You will bear
14:16Shall be called
14:17The Son of God
14:20The Annunciation
14:24Is the word
14:24That we give
14:25To Angel Gabriel's
14:27Visit to Mary
14:28Where he tells her
14:30That she is going
14:31To give birth
14:32To the Messiah
14:33The Angel Gabriel
14:36Is one of the few named
14:37And thus most important
14:39Angels in the Hebrew Bible
14:41He's well known
14:42For interpreting
14:43Messages from God
14:44And in the time of Jesus
14:46He was known as one
14:47Of the guardians
14:47Of Israel
14:48For Mary
14:51It would have been
14:53Really very frightening
14:55For her
14:55When it comes down to it
14:58She would be young
14:59She would be unmarried
15:01And she would be pregnant
15:02But Mary leans totally in
15:06She knows
15:08That her people
15:09Are expecting a Messiah
15:10She knows
15:11That her people
15:12Are in a time
15:13Of occupation
15:14And empire
15:15And so
15:16She erupts
15:17In this song
15:18Of liberation
15:19My soul glorifies
15:21The Lord
15:22And my spirit
15:24Rejoices in God
15:25My Savior
15:25For he has been
15:29Mindful of the humble
15:30State of his servant
15:31From now on
15:34All generations
15:35Will call me blessed
15:36For the mighty one
15:38Has done great things
15:39For me
15:40Early is his name
15:43Your cousin Elizabeth
15:51She who is unable
15:54To conceive
15:55Despite her old age
15:58Will also bear a child
16:00For no word from God
16:05Will ever fail
16:06After the angel Gabriel
16:23Has visited Mary
16:24She immediately gets up
16:26And goes to visit
16:27Her cousin Elizabeth
16:29Who is described as living
16:30In the hill country
16:31Of Judea
16:32I don't understand
16:36It'll only be a few weeks
16:39The roads are not safe
16:42I cannot leave my work
16:44Is it so important
16:47To see Elizabeth
16:48Very
16:50When Mary makes a trip
17:07To go and see Elizabeth
17:08Mary is looking for someone
17:12To confirm
17:13That she's not crazy
17:15I always find the Elizabeth
17:25And Mary encounter
17:27So affirming
17:28Here is Elizabeth
17:29An older relative
17:31Cousin of Mary
17:33Who gives birth
17:35To a prophesied son
17:38John the Baptist
17:39Your cousin Elizabeth
17:45Despite her old age
17:47Will also bear a child
17:50Beautiful boy
17:56May he be blessed
18:01And so this is a confirmation
18:04That Mary did in fact
18:06Have a visit from Gabriel
18:07And what that means for her
18:10Is that she is carrying
18:12The prophesied messiah
18:14John the Baptist
18:16And Jesus
18:17They are family
18:19No word of God
18:24Will ever fail
18:24No word of God
18:25No word of God
18:26No word of God
18:27No word of God
18:28No word of God
18:29No word of God
18:30No word of God
18:31No word of God
18:32No word of God
18:33No word of God
18:34No word of God
18:35No word of God
18:36No word of God
18:37No word of God
18:38No word of God
18:39No word of God
18:40No word of God
18:41No word of God
18:42No word of God
18:43No word of God
18:44No word of God
18:45No word of God
18:46No word of God
18:47No word of God
18:48No word of God
18:49No word of God
18:50These are the men.
19:05They are, father.
19:07In total, we know of about nine sons of Herod the Great.
19:12And of those sons, Herod Antipas is clever, ambitious, and just as ruthless as his father.
19:20Six months.
19:26It took six months to find the artisans who crafted this eagle.
19:35It costs thousands of gold shekels.
19:42And you destroyed it.
19:44The ancient Jewish historian Josephus tells us that an eagle was installed on the temple grounds.
19:52And that some Jewish rebels came and tore it down.
19:55The eagle is a direct insult, a direct attack on the Jewish god.
20:02And the rebels themselves are prepared, if necessary, to be martyred.
20:09To die in order to take down this sign of a foreign god that has invaded his most sacred of spaces.
20:19Who am I?
20:27Who am I?
20:31You are king of Herod.
20:37Herod king of what?
20:39Oh, yes.
20:44Yes.
20:45The Jews.
20:48And yet you dare to desecrate the temple that I built.
20:52I could slit your throat right here.
21:07A quick death.
21:11I won't cut your throat.
21:19Lots of mess.
21:25Flies.
21:26Inconvenience.
21:31No.
21:34You shall be burned.
21:41Alive.
21:45All of you.
21:46inconvenience.
21:49Inconvenience.
21:50Tchau, tchau.
22:20Tchau, tchau.
22:51It's a miracle.
22:52Tchau, tchau.
23:22Joseph is a pious person, and like most Jews, he believes in miracles.
23:27He just doesn't believe they're going to happen in his case, and especially not like this.
23:33In a small town like Nazareth, and really all over Galilee and Judea, burying a child out
23:40of wedlock would have been a scandal.
23:43Ancient Jewish laws were unforgiving, so Mary would have faced a potential death sentence
23:49by stoning.
23:50I cannot...
23:54I will not shame you.
23:59You will go away to relatives until the child is born.
24:08I will not shame you.
24:16I will not shame you.
24:21In the ancient world,
24:43people believed that dreams were a mechanism
24:45by which God could directly communicate to someone.
24:51Joseph, descendant of David,
25:01don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife.
25:07The baby she carries is from the Holy Spirit.
25:12She will give birth to a son,
25:15and you are to give him the name Jesus,
25:19because he will save his people from their sins.
25:26The reason why the Bible is interested in having Jesus born of a virgin
25:31is because they're trying to make sure he's not an ordinary guy.
25:35There are legends of gods procreating with human beings,
25:39and they're harnessing that idea and wedding it to a biblical prophecy about a virgin
25:45in order to say Jesus really is the son of a deity.
25:49He's not just a carpenter's son from the Galilee.
25:55I come to your house, Joachim, for you to give me your daughter, Mary.
26:11I come to your house, Joachim, for you to give me your daughter, Mary,
26:33to be my wife, and I will be her husband from today and forever.
26:49Because of the dream, Joseph accepts fully the responsibility of caring for Mary and her son,
26:58and then goes ahead with the marriage.
27:02Mary and Joseph want to do everything to protect this child.
27:06This human baby born to Mary is also God's child,
27:13and they are responsible for this future, for humankind.
27:18The ancient Jewish historian Josephus tells us that the protesters who had removed the eagle from the temple
27:41were sentenced to death by burning by Herod.
27:44Who should I, the great King Herod, fear?
27:51Their body, father.
27:54So why burn these fanatics?
27:58A fire can be started by the smallest spark.
28:05We have to stamp it out before it catches hold and destroys everything.
28:13This kingdom is ours.
28:18Nobody is going to take it from us.
28:22desire can be given the He'll take it from us.
28:27Speaking of Yes
28:39When you've seen many
28:52A CIDADE NO BRASIL
29:22A CIDADE NO BRASIL
29:52According to Luke, the census requires Joseph, the head of the family at that time,
30:13to travel back to his ancestral home, all the way south to the city of Bethlehem.
30:18Luke's story of the census is a strange story because we don't know of a census at exactly this time.
30:33There was a census that took place about 10 years later.
30:35And moreover, when you have censuses in antiquity, just as in present,
30:41you're not required usually to go back to your ancestral home in order to register yourself.
30:46A CIDADE NO BRASIL
30:52A CIDADE NO BRASIL
30:56Tchau.
31:26Tchau, tchau.
31:56They have a house full of guests, but they did say we can't sleep on the ground floor.
32:26Mary and Joseph were not hoping to stay at an inn in Bethlehem.
32:39That's a mistranslation of the Greek.
32:41Bethlehem was much too small to have had a hotel for them to stay at.
32:45Instead, they were hoping to stay in the guest room of some relatives, but it turned out that that space was already occupied.
32:52There was no room in the family quarters, and Judean houses were arranged in such a way that upstairs, the family had their living quarters.
33:05And underneath them, on the lower floor, is where the animals were kept.
33:08I'm scared.
33:37We are being watched over.
33:41There can be no darkness where there is light.
33:47Childbirth in the ancient world was particularly dangerous.
33:51If a woman got sick or there were complications during childbirth, the child and the mother could be lost almost instantly.
34:01Millions of women died in childbirth.
34:04Millions of women died in the childhood.
34:18Millions of women died in mathematics inaaaaah.
34:22Millions of women died in men.
34:26Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
34:56A história tradicional é que Jesus foi morto
35:08em algum lugar próximo de Christmas.
35:10Mais mais provavelmente,
35:12foi no início do ano,
35:14porque sabemos que os shepherds
35:17estavam lá no campo com seus filhos.
35:19E há esses filhos, que eles ainda estão hoje,
35:23onde eles ainda estão nascendo os sheep.
35:26Do not be afraid.
35:39I bring you the good news for all people.
35:46To you is born this day in the town of David,
35:51a savior who is the Messiah.
35:56There's an aspect of prophecy at work.
36:02The Gospel of Luke has shepherds
36:04because Luke wants us to see Jesus
36:08as the successor to King David,
36:10who is considered to be the greatest king
36:13in the history of Israel,
36:15who was also a shepherd
36:17called in from the field
36:19to lead his people.
36:38He's so small.
36:41He's so vulnerable.
36:43And he will have enemies.
36:52Enemies, yes.
36:54But friends also.
36:56The Magi are astrologers.
37:26And they have seen a star
37:29that won't let them go,
37:32that captures their imagination,
37:33that wants to guide them across the country.
37:35There's parts of the Gospels
37:45that seem to say that they're from Persia.
37:48Other places say that they might be
37:50from other places in the Middle East.
37:51We seek an audience with King Herod.
38:08According to the Jewish historian Josephus,
38:33Herod's last days are,
38:34to put it mildly, grim.
38:37Herod is internally eaten up by worms.
38:40He's ravaged by sickness.
38:42He smells terrible.
38:46His bowels are so irritated,
38:49so inflamed,
38:51that he can barely stand to sit.
38:53His genitals have been
38:54completely eaten away by worms.
38:57In addition to all the physical ailments,
39:08he's also increasingly paranoid,
39:11deluded.
39:12He sees plots everywhere.
39:13Now, the New Testament only tells us
39:35that the Magi are from the East.
39:37But to the East of Judea
39:39is the Parthian Empire.
39:42And Herod the Great's main job
39:44for the Romans
39:45is to keep the Parthians at bay.
39:48So when these Magi show up
39:50from the East,
39:52he could have them arrested
39:53thinking that they were spies,
39:56but he doesn't want to create
39:57a diplomatic incident for Rome.
39:59The purpose of your visit?
40:03We seek the one
40:05who has been born
40:06king of the Jews.
40:08We saw his star when it rose
40:11and have come to worship him.
40:13I'm not sure I understand you.
40:35I am the king of the Jews.
40:40A king.
40:41Yes.
40:43But not the king.
40:52You seek this child,
40:55the king of the Jews,
40:57and yet you do not know where he is.
41:01We read the heavens,
41:05celestial movements,
41:07a star far brighter than any other.
41:13Let us hear,
41:15mighty Herod.
41:22We've seen nothing.
41:25We've heard nothing.
41:27but we will investigate.
41:34Most people in the ancient world
41:37believe that their world
41:38was shaped by supernatural actors
41:41that they couldn't see.
41:43And for Jews,
41:45the kind of future,
41:47their circumstances
41:48were explained
41:49in the writings of the prophets.
41:51and so when things
41:53were going wrong around them,
41:54they would look to the Hebrew Bible
41:56to make sense of the world.
42:01How is it
42:02that a rabble of trouser-wearing charlatans
42:05from the outer fringes
42:07of the civilized world
42:09know about the birth
42:10of this king of the Jews,
42:12and yet we
42:13know reality?
42:20Herod is incredibly insecure
42:22about his Jewishness.
42:23While his father was Jewish,
42:25his grandfather
42:26had been a convert.
42:27And thus,
42:28to many Jews,
42:29he would have been seen
42:30as less Jewish
42:31than he might have wanted to be.
42:34The Jewish people
42:35don't see him
42:37as a legitimate king.
42:39He doesn't have
42:40the right pedigree.
42:43He is immediately
42:44searching for this claimant,
42:47even though
42:47by all the information he has,
42:49it's only an infant.
42:51This is only a child,
42:52but Herod himself
42:53feels threatened
42:54by this child.
42:56The book of Micah.
42:59But you, Bethlehem,
43:01out of you will come
43:03one who will be ruler
43:06over Israel.
43:10For Herod,
43:16the greatest threat
43:17to his legitimacy
43:18is a better candidate.
43:21Any reports
43:23of another possible
43:24Jewish king
43:25would have terrified him.
43:27What do you want?
43:55We have come
43:56to see the Messiah.
44:02They just want
44:03to see him.
44:11The Gospel of Luke
44:13tells us that
44:13the shepherds
44:14go and find
44:15Mary,
44:16Joseph,
44:16and Jesus.
44:16The shepherds go
44:25and tell everyone
44:26that they meet
44:26the good news
44:27of this birth.
44:39The shepherds telling people
44:41is completely understandable.
44:43This is an incredible experience.
44:46But here's the thing.
44:48The more people they tell,
44:50the more danger
44:51they put the Holy Family in.
44:53my priests have found the prophecy.
45:18The child you seek
45:21is in Bethlehem.
45:28When you find this child,
45:30you must return here
45:33and tell me
45:34immediately.
45:36You understand I
45:42wish only to
45:44pay homage
45:45for such a prophecy
45:48to pass
45:49in my kingdom
45:50during my reign
45:52would truly
45:54be a blessing.
45:56in my reign.
46:26In the Gospel of Matthew,
46:51we don't actually know
46:52when the Magi
46:53visited Jesus.
46:54It could have been
46:56the same day
46:57as Jesus' birth.
46:58It could have been
46:58days later,
46:59even months later.
47:00The gifts of the Magi,
47:22gold, frankincense,
47:23and myrrh
47:24are suitable for a king
47:26from birth to death.
47:28From womb to tomb.
47:30Frankincense is used in worship,
47:32a symbol of prayer,
47:33ascending to God.
47:35Myrrh is an odor retardant
47:37used in burial.
47:39And gold,
47:40well,
47:41what king doesn't need resources?
47:42It is not just presents
47:46we bear.
47:48Ill tidings also.
47:52We came from Jerusalem.
47:54Herod knows of the prophecy.
47:56And despite his best attempts,
47:59he could barely disguise
48:00his malice.
48:01We had a vision
48:07in our sleep.
48:16When Mary and Joseph realize
48:18that King Herod knows
48:19about the birth of Jesus,
48:21they are immediately afraid
48:23about the future
48:24of their child.
48:24So the Magi have a dilemma.
48:33Do they return to Herod
48:34and report to him
48:35and endanger the life
48:36of the child?
48:37Or do they return home
48:38by another route
48:40and incur the wrath of Herod
48:43who might pursue them?
48:46They know the kind of human he is
48:48and what he's capable of.
48:50And they make a plan
48:51to get back home
48:52on another route.
48:53They choose to do
48:55the righteous thing,
48:56the right thing.
48:57Even though it puts them at risk,
48:59they protect this baby
49:02with their own lives.
49:12This better be good, Antipas.
49:18We can't find them.
49:21They were last seen
49:22leaving Clefahemp,
49:23but nothing after that.
49:26Our spies think
49:27they may have returned home
49:28by the desert road.
49:32If the Magi are running,
49:42it is because
49:43they have found the child.
49:44the prophecy is true.
49:57You will take 20 soldiers
49:59into Bethlehem immediately.
50:02You will go to every house.
50:03You will take any child
50:08you find under the age of two
50:10and you will slit their throats.
50:16There will be a riot
50:18to kill so many
50:20on such a scale.
50:22The men,
50:23they might refuse.
50:26Refuse?
50:26Nobody refuses the Harrods.
50:31You want to wear my crown, boy?
50:38Get your hands dirty.
50:45If any of you are in any doubt
51:08about this mission
51:09then remember this.
51:12If your sword comes back
51:14unbloodied
51:15then I'll get your children,
51:18your wives,
51:21your mothers
51:21and then I'll give you
51:24to my father.
51:25and then I'll get your children.
