Pope Francis renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during his Easter Sunday message, which was read aloud by an aide as the pontiff—still recovering from pneumonia—made a brief appearance on the main balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

Earlier in the day, the pope held a private meeting at the Vatican with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

00:13message, delivered by an aide as the 88-year-old pontiff, still recovering from pneumonia, made
00:20a brief appearance on the main balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
00:24On doctor's orders, the Pope limited his Easter workload and did not preside over Mass
00:29at the Vatican.
00:30However, he appeared at the end of the service to give the traditional urbi et orbi to the
00:35city and the world, blessing and message.
00:39Before his recent five-week hospitalization, Francis had intensified his criticism of Israel's
00:45military operations in Gaza, describing the humanitarian crisis in January as,
00:51"...very serious and shameful."
00:53In his Easter address, he called the situation, "...dramatic and deplorable."
00:58The pontiff also urged Palestinian militant group Hamas to release its remaining hostages
01:03and condemned what he described as, "...a worrisome rise in anti-Semitism globally."
01:09Earlier, Pope Francis held a private meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance at the Vatican.
