00:00All right, so I want to talk about this kid that's ruined college football
00:04as he's transferred now, or I butcher his name, to UCLA.
00:11At least, look, I got to give the kid credit.
00:14I mean, Knoxville's incredible.
00:16My daughter's applying to school there.
00:18It's a great place.
00:19Incredible sports, incredible atmosphere, you know, Neyland, everything else.
00:25But honestly, if you're going to transfer somewhere, why not to Westwood and UCLA?
00:32I even said looking at the cheerleaders is better.
00:36Well, you know, there's no teaching moment to the whole situation.
00:40That's what I wrote about earlier in the week.
00:42Like, Tennessee can say we took a stand, Scott, but it feels like they took one for the team
00:48for the rest of college football.
00:49And you know how that fan base is, where if they're 8-4 at the end of the season,
00:53or 7-5, taking a stand to only get you so far.
00:57I thought when Nico Iamaliava transferred that he might end up on the West Coast.
01:01But isn't it strange that he ends up in a place where his brother, Madden,
01:07flipped in January and went to Arkansas?
01:10And, you know, with handlers and, you know what phrase is probably the most annoying phrase
01:14in college football right now, Scott, is those in Iamaliava's camp
01:18or those in this quarterback's camp.
01:21Like, we have camps now?
01:23I mean, what are we doing?
01:24This isn't the NFL.
01:25It's trying too hard to be in the NFL.
01:27And I made the analogy last week.
01:29I said it's like a quarterback holding out and seeking free agency at the same time.
01:34And that's what happened.
01:37And now, you know, holdouts.
01:40And now, agents, the seedy side of professional sports has bled all over college sports.
01:50Yeah.
01:51And until we have – everybody says we need NIL guardrails.
01:55What does that mean?
01:56Do we need the two-year contract to make them employees of the university?
02:01Does that slow down the number of people in the transfer portal?
02:05Ross Dellinger had a story today about the rates of kids that haven't found a home
02:09that got in the transfer portal, haven't found a school to play at.
02:13And I think that's another alarming thing that you get into.
02:17It's ugly.
02:18My editors might not feel the same way as I do.
02:22I think for the traditional college football fan, I feel like you and I are that.
02:26It's a turnoff.
02:28It's another reason that you're like, this is – I'm not asking us to go back to 1994 by any means.
02:33But, you know, what we're doing right now, it's ugly.
02:38It's not college football as we know it.
02:40I can't stand it.
02:42And, you know, I argue with everyone that comes on about it.
02:46I got guys coming on here that are big-time media people saying they have no problem at all
02:52with the money that's being thrown around.
02:54I have a massive issue with it personally.
02:58I'm worried about, you know, as Steve Alvord said,
03:00a bunch of stupid kids walking around the earth with no careers and no jobs
03:04and no degrees, and they're making all this money now, whatever.
03:09Who do you think in that portal could actually make college football better for,
03:15you know, themselves and for teams and for conferences
03:18that we could actually grab onto?
03:21Well, we need to – in general with the portal, what I think would work is
03:27if you want to transfer one time, go ahead.
03:30You know, that's fine.
03:30If you're Nico and you want to transfer, that's fine.
03:33What he should have done, honestly, is just started this process
03:37after they lost to Ohio State in the college football playoff.
03:41Then nobody would have blinked.
03:43We would have said, oh, that's a big move.
03:45But, you know, other four- and five-star quarterbacks have done that.
03:48Cam Ward has done it twice.
03:50So, you know, in terms of a quarterback, you know, Steve Angeli at Notre Dame,
03:54if he chooses to get in the portal, he could be an answer for Tennessee,
03:59you know, potentially.
04:00They could find somebody else.
04:01That's what he's doing, right?
04:02Isn't he in it already?
04:04Yeah, and I think that's one guy they should look at.
04:06You know, he stepped in, had a good game against Penn State when they needed it,
04:12experienced quarterback, and can be a stopgap.
04:14They've got another five-star quarterback coming to campus next year.
04:17So, we'll see what they learned from Nico.
04:20But, you know, the people that I've talked to about that situation said,
04:23and here's the other problem, Scott.
04:25When you're handing a 17-year-old a four-year contract, $8 million,
04:30you can say it's NIL, but it's money.
04:32It's paying to play.
04:34Are we shocked that things like this happen?
