Mike Payton talks about the possibility of the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings making a mutuall beneficial trade during the NFL Draft, that makes sense for all parties.
Transcript
00:00We've talked a lot about the potential of the Lions trading up in the 2025 NFL Draft.
00:05One NFC North team could be the key to helping them do that.
00:09Let's talk about it.
00:13Hi, Mike Payne from A to Z Sports Detroit.
00:15Today we're going to talk about how the Lions and the Minnesota Vikings are in a really good spot right now to do each other favors.
00:21Now, this would not be the first time that the Lions and Vikings have worked together to do each other a favor.
00:26The Lions and Vikings worked together on the TJ Hawkinson trade back in 2022.
00:32That trade wound up with the Lions getting Terry and Arnold later in 2024 and a couple other players, Hendon Hooker, Broderick Martin, a few other guys.
00:41Sione Vocky was part of that as well.
00:43The Vikings wound up getting J.J. McCarthy out of that.
00:46That was a big, big trade.
00:48Helped both teams.
00:50It allowed the Vikings to get some extra picks, which they didn't really have.
00:53And then they also worked together on the Jameson Williams trade.
00:59When the Lions traded up to number 12, that was with the Vikings.
01:02Lions wound up getting Jameson Williams, Josh Paschal.
01:06The Vikings got Lewis Sin and moved some other picks around.
01:11But they wound up getting extra picks out of the deal.
01:13And that's the theme out of this whole thing.
01:16The Vikings only have four draft picks right now.
01:19They could use some more.
01:20They're sitting at the 24th pick, and the Lions are at the 28th pick.
01:27And the Lions are sitting there with the Ravens and the Texans in front of them, both needing similar players to what the Lions need.
01:35The Ravens need an edge rusher.
01:37They need a guard.
01:38Texans need a receiver or a guard.
01:40And they could very well take guys that the Lions have their eyes set on that they really, really want and draft those guys ahead of Detroit.
01:51Now, here's an opportunity for the Lions to move up to the 24th pick with the Vikings, jump the Ravens and the Texans, get a guy who they want.
01:59Maybe it's Graze Abel.
02:00Maybe it's Shamar Stewart.
02:02You never know who it could be at 28.
02:04The draft is so volatile.
02:05It just moves all over the place, and it allows the Vikings to move down to 28.
02:11And, you know, the Lions, you probably throw in a third-round pick, similar to what they did last year with the Dallas Cowboys.
02:16I think the trade that would make the most sense is probably the Lions get the 24th pick and maybe a future 6th or 7th rounder in next year's draft.
02:25And the Vikings would get the 28th pick and the 102nd pick in the third round.
02:30So the Vikings get an extra pick.
02:33They get to move down a little bit to a spot where maybe they could trade down again from there or find their running back of the future.
02:39Maybe Omari and Hampton is there.
02:41Maybe Trayvon Henderson is there.
02:44This is a good opportunity for both teams to really get what they want out of this deal.
02:48But for the Lions, it's huge because, again, with those teams in front of them, that's an opportunity to beat those guys to some of the guys that you want.
02:59Obviously, you don't want to move up too high because you're giving up too many assets.
03:03Maybe you move up to the teens, but then, like I said, you're giving up a lot from there.
03:07You're never going to move up to the top 10.
03:09I mean, they might.
03:09It's crazy.
03:10It might happen, but they'd be giving up so much to do it.
03:13So, yeah, you find yourself sitting there with the 24th pick.
03:20Pretty good opportunity to get some guys that you want.
03:23I think that this is a good deal for both teams.
03:25I wouldn't be shocked if they did it.
