The US administration may walk away from trying to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal unless there are clear signs that a deal can be done, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday (April 18) after meeting European and Ukrainian leaders the day before on the Russia-Ukraine war.

00:00But we're not going to continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end.
00:30So we need to determine very quickly now, and I'm talking about in a matter of days, whether or not this is doable over the next few weeks.
00:38If it is, we're in. If it's not, then we have other priorities to focus on as well.
00:43I think it's important to remind everybody that the Ukraine war is a terrible thing, but it's not our war.
00:48We didn't start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine over the last three years, and we want it to end.
00:54So we've talked about outlines of both sides. I thought we had positive meetings yesterday.
00:58Obviously, the Ukrainians have to go back home. They have to run it by their president.
01:01They have to take into account their views on all of this, and we hope to hear back from them very soon.
01:07So if they're serious about peace, either side or both, we want to help.
01:11If it's not going to happen, then we're just going to move on.
01:13And I think this is a very important occasion to have convergence with our Ukrainian friends and alongside the Europeans, alongside with you.
01:33Because I think everybody wants to get peace, for sure, and a robust and sustainable peace.
01:40And this is a thing we clearly will offer to you.
01:44And now the question is about the phasing and the way to approach this result, which is the one we do wish.
01:53What she thinks about the fact that President Trump holds Zelensky responsible for the war in Ukraine?
02:06That was a war that we would have never started if I were president.
02:10You'd have millions of people living right now that are dead.
02:13You'd have cities that would be open and thriving, and they'd have their beautiful terrors.
02:17Those terrors are the most beautiful in the world, but they're not with us any longer.
02:21They're smashed to smithereens, laying on the ground in a million pieces, getting hit by rockets, bombs, and bullets.
02:30How much longer does Vladimir Putin have to respond to your ceasefire proposal before you put secondary tariffs or sanctions on Russia?
02:40We'll see what that will be.
02:42We're going to be hearing from them this week, very shortly, actually.
02:48And we'll see.
02:49But we want him to stop.
02:50We want the death and the killing to stop.
