00:12Hi everyone, here we are in Kaganut
00:15We left Panama about 3 days ago
00:21and we're headed past Galapagos to the Marquesas
00:25which is about 4,000 miles away
00:27and we're chasing the mini Globrace boats
00:3115 boats
00:33and most of them are to starboard of me at the moment
00:36and some ahead
00:38and we do really well in the stronger breezes
00:42but in the lighter breezes they stay ahead
00:47so we've had to put up Big Bertha
00:50and she's there behind me
00:53and this is our asymmetric
00:56from the Golden Globe Race
00:59and because it's a Golden Globe Race boat
01:05we have to set it flying
01:07we've got no top down furler or sock
01:10or anything like that
01:11so there she is
01:13and we're going quite nicely
01:15we're just a bit shy
01:16you can see there
01:17and the Aries wind vane
01:21is steering down at the back
01:23there she is
01:26so she's steering shy
01:28with the asymmetric
01:31here's the cockpit
01:33it's a bit of chaos
01:34we've got lines everywhere
01:36because everything comes back
01:38and there's last night's dishes
01:41so I haven't finished those up yet
01:43and Aries doing its thing
01:47here's another view from down to Leward
01:51and we're going quite nicely
01:53in a kittenish breeze
01:55just force 3
01:57just far out of the beam
01:59apparent wind
02:00and we're probably doing
02:02I don't know
02:033 or 4 knots
02:05maybe a little bit better
02:06bit of stream behind us as well
02:08we've had really good stream
02:09helping us since Panama
02:11and here's the chaos down below
02:14I'm single handed on this leg
02:17so Jill's bunk to port
02:19is all storage
02:20there's my bunk over there to starboard
02:23chart table
02:25new addition
02:26there's a fridge
02:27on board
02:28which is full of goodies
02:31look there's some celery
02:33I've got carrots under there
02:35cabbage
02:38cheese
02:39a few bits and pieces
02:42and
02:44there's the gully
02:46another change
02:48we've got a little tablet on board
02:50which we're not allowed on the Golden Globe race
02:52and that's got Navionics
02:54so we can see it
02:58we've got windy on there
03:00as well
03:01so we're coming
03:02approaching the doldrums now
03:04so we
03:05we left Panama
03:06on this tongue
03:07of
03:08northeasterly
03:09and came down through here
03:10and also had a bit of a current
03:12helping us
03:13and the currents are
03:15basically
03:16here
03:17you can see
03:18the current
03:19helped us come down through here
03:21and through here
03:22and that's the Galapagos
03:24the Galapagos
03:25and then we're hooking down
03:27over to the Marqueses
03:31which are 4,000 miles away
03:34about
03:3540% of the way across the Pacific
03:37so it's quite a big
03:38big trip
03:39and we've also got the YB tracker
03:42so you can see all the competition
03:44we've got Dan on the beam
03:46Renault and Dan ahead
03:47I think this is Pilar and Christian over here
03:50Gary over here
03:54and then John and Mike
03:56are still to set off
03:57there
03:58that's the fleet
04:00heading down towards Galapagos
04:02and there's Coconuts famous Dunny door
04:05that's a
04:08bulkhead
04:10watertight bulkhead
04:11into the forward cabin
04:12and I've got a dinghy up there
04:14and an electric outboard
04:16which is really great
04:17there's the loo
04:18and the electric outboards
04:20just
04:21hanging up there
04:22it's a Timo
04:23in the corner
04:31there's the famous bulkhead clock
04:331946
04:34and you'll see it stopped
04:36because I forgot to wind it
04:37and so
04:38I'll wind it
04:39now
04:40and every weekend
04:41just to
04:42it runs for eight days
04:43but I've just
04:45not in the sea routine yet
04:46and
04:49there's the view out the back
04:51so
04:52Aries is doing a beautiful job
04:54sailing is
04:56quite shy
04:57with the
04:58the asymmetric
04:59and if we look on here
05:01it says we're doing 4.6 knots
05:05there we go
05:07oops
05:085.3
05:09bit of a luffy
05:10the other big change is
05:12we've gone to the dark side
05:13and we've got Starlink
05:14and
05:15it's sitting in that little box
05:16in the corner
05:17of that little tub
05:18so that means we've got comms at sea
05:19so it's not just the HF radio
05:20so
05:21gee
05:22coconuts moved into the modern age
05:23with Starlink
05:24I can
05:25I can have this online stuff
05:26I've got a fridge
05:27I've got a dinghy
05:28I've got a dinghy
05:29I've got an outboard
05:30and I even had a partner Jill on board for the last leg
05:33and she's joining in Tahiti
05:34so there's a few changes in good ship coconut for the better
05:38anyway
05:39that's a quick update
05:40and I'll catch you later on
05:41bye
05:42Hello
05:44welcome on board

09:43Hi there, Coconut here.
09:46Sweating in the doldrums.
09:50Just moving slowly south.
09:53Last night I noticed that I had sunburn on the back of my neck.
10:01And I thought, how'd that come about?
10:05Because I'm heading south and this dodger up here gives me some cover.
10:09And then it occurred to me that we've actually sailed under the geographical position of the sun.
10:16And the sun is now to the north of us.
10:20Just checking the nautical almanac for today, 31st of March.
10:29The declination of the sun is north for 26.5 minutes at Meridian Passage.
10:38Our latitude is about 1 south.
10:41So we've sailed under the sun in the last two days.
10:45And it's now to the north of us.
10:47This gives us an opportunity to do a seldom used site.
10:56Called a very high altitude site.
10:58When you pass close to the geographical position of a body at Meridian Passage.
11:05You can plot the geographical position directly on a small scale chart.
11:09And basically, as it passes your meridian.
11:15That distance from the body to the zenith.
11:20Which is a true zenith distance.
11:22Is actually the distance that is away from you.
11:25And you can plot that directly on a small scale chart.
11:28It's not super accurate.
11:31Because you use a small scale chart.
11:33But you probably get it to within five miles.
11:36And it's very, very easy.
11:38Because all you do is correct your sextant altitude.
11:41For index error, height of eye and semi-diameter and refraction.
11:48Take it from 90 and plot that directly on the chart.
11:52What I've done here is I've got a small scale chart.
11:58And the sun's declination is 427.
12:01And I've plotted here 427.
12:04So the sun's going to run along that line there.
12:06And I've got the GHA basically out of the Almanac.
12:11There we go.
12:12It's 74 right on the button there for 1700.
12:17Which is 1200 my time.
12:19And so I've then adjusted that for the additional longitude.
12:24So we're basically, where are we?
12:29At 82.
12:31That's another 8 degrees.
12:34Which is 8, 16, 20, or 32 minutes.
12:38And that's, there we go.
12:4012.32, 12.36, 12.40, 44, 48, 52.
12:47So I've plotted the geographical position directly on the chart.
12:50And we can then get the TZD and plot it directly from here.
12:55Obviously, if you're closer to the geographical position.
13:00Like we were yesterday.
13:02It'd be even better.
13:03But I missed that opportunity.
13:05So we'll have to do it now.
13:07Okay, we're going to get the sexton out here.
13:12And the first thing we'll do is check the index error.
13:16And I can do that from down below quite comfortably.
13:19Just looking out the back of the boat.
13:24So I'm just going to set zero on the sexton.
13:28And I'm looking out the back.
13:30Get the shades out of the way.
13:32And I've got the horizon there.
13:34It's nicely in focus.
13:36And I can bring it together.
13:38And there it is.
13:40Basically five minutes of arc on the arc.
13:43So that's five minutes of arc there on the micrometer drum.
13:47Can we see it?
13:48There it is.
13:49And so I'm going to subtract five minutes from my observations.
13:55So I'm in the companionway now.
13:57The sun's over there.
13:59Basically, it's about 85 degrees.
14:03So it's getting quite high.
14:05And there we go.
14:07I can see him there.
14:08And I've got to swing the sexton and bring him to the horizon.
14:13Beautiful like that.
14:15It's very calm, so it's easy.
14:17I'm going to take it exactly at minute 32.
14:20Because that's on the chart.
14:22I checked my watch on timeanddate.com.
14:28And I'm nine seconds slow at the moment.
14:32So at 12.31.51, I'm going to take an altitude.
14:37And that's in 20 seconds.
14:38Where are we?
14:39We're just above the horizon there.
14:40Swing.
14:41Conditions are pretty nice.
14:42Bang.
14:43And that's about time there.
14:44And that is 85 degrees, 12.3.
14:45So I'll just write that down.
14:46And that's about time there.
14:47And that is 85 degrees, 12.3.
14:49So I'll just write that down.
14:50Okay.
14:51So I'm going to take these every four minutes.
14:52So that was 12.32 on the first one.
14:5312.32 on the first one.
14:5412.32 on the first one.
14:55So I'm going to take these every four minutes.
14:56So that was 12.32 on the first one.
14:5812.36 on this one.
14:59So it'll be 12.35.51 allowing for a watch error.
15:03And that's about time there.
15:04And that's about time there.
15:07And that is 85 degrees, 12.3.
15:11So I'll just write that down.
15:15Okay.
15:16So I'm going to take these every four minutes.
15:18So that was 12.32 on the first one.
15:2112.36 on this one.
15:23So it'll be 12.35.51 allowing for a watch error.
15:27You've got to swing it because it's very high.
15:31So you've got a long bit of horizon to bring it down to.
15:42Beautiful.
15:49Okay.
15:5011 seconds to go.
15:55Beautiful.
15:57Looks pretty good there.
15:58That's about time.
15:59So that is now 85, 46.3.
16:1285, 46.3.
16:14Okay.
16:15There's my sextant and I'm continuing to take the observations.
16:20I've got 12.32.
16:2136.
16:2240.
16:2344.
16:24And I've recorded them there.
16:25And I'm going to continue to take them until minute 48 and 52.
16:39Okay.
16:40Now for the moment of truth, we've got to calculate the observations and plot it, which is pretty
16:49easy.
16:50Basically, here's all the observations here.
16:53Minute 32 down to minute 52.
16:5685, 12.3, all the way to 86, so 2.3.
17:00And I've just, as I came down, I wrote the GPS position down off Navionics.
17:05So we've got an aiming point to see how we go.
17:09So what I've done is I've transferred these here.
17:13So I've got the time, 12.32, 36.40.
17:18I've got the sextant altitude for each one there.
17:22Index error and dip to give us a corrected altitude.
17:26Semi-diameter and refraction to give us a true out.
17:32And I've taken it from 90 to give the TZD.
17:35And I've got it in degrees minutes and decimal minutes.
17:38And they are all listed there.
17:40And what I've then done is I've grabbed the dividers here and I've plotted those distances.
17:49Basically, so the first one at 12.32 was 4.39.1.
17:55So I've gone, right, 1, 2, 3, 4, 39.1, somewhere like that.
18:02And I've gone to 12.32 there and I've plotted, hang on, 4.39.1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 39.1, not 3, 39.1.
18:17Okay.
18:18So there we have it there.
18:20Plotted from there.
18:21And that gives us a line there.
18:23And I've plotted these all the way through.
18:26And you can see there's a load of little arcs there.
18:31And then I've picked that off here.
18:33And it's 105 north, 85, 14 west.
18:37And that compares to the GPS position 105.9 and 85, 15.0.
18:45So it's within a minute of latitude and a minute of longitude.
18:49So it's within, you know, one and a half miles.
18:52Look, you could pick anywhere in here.
18:56So I think we're a bit lucky, but you can see that it's still not a bad position.
19:00Good to a couple of miles and just simply plotted on the chart.
19:06So that's a very high altitude site.
19:09You do it when the sun's declination and your latitude are similar.
19:14Probably yesterday and the day before would have been better.
19:19It's getting a bit far when we've got a, you know, four degrees as a TZD.
19:26That's 240, 270 odd miles.
19:30So we have to use a small scale chart.
19:32And that means the accuracy of the plotting isn't good.
19:35So if you can get it when the sun's within a degree or two of your,
19:39the declination is a degree or two of your latitude, it's even better.
19:43But I missed that.
19:44So better late than never.
19:46Anyway, hope you enjoyed that.
19:48Cheers.
19:49Bye.
19:50Hi, everyone.
19:51Here we are in Koganat and we're, we left Panama about three days ago
19:58and we're headed past the Galapagos to the Marquesas, which is about 4,000 miles away.
20:04And we're chasing the mini globe race boats, 15 boats.
20:10And they're all, most of them are to starboard of me at the moment and some ahead.
20:15And we do really well in the, in the stronger breezes.
20:20But in the, in the lighter breezes, they, they, they stay ahead.
20:25So we've had to put up big Bertha and she's there behind me.
20:30And this is our asymmetric from the, uh, golden globe race.
20:37And, um, because, um, uh, it's a golden globe race boat, uh, we have to set it flying.
20:45We've got no, uh, top down furler or sock or anything like that.
20:49So, uh, there she is.
20:51And we're going quite nicely.
20:53We're just a bit shy.
20:54You can see there.
20:56And the, um, the Aries wind vane is, uh, steering down at the back.
21:02There she is.
21:04So she's steering, uh, shy, uh, with the, um, the asymmetric.
21:10Uh, here's the cockpit.
21:12It's a bit of chaos.
21:13We've got lines everywhere because everything comes back.
21:16And, um, there's, uh, last night's dishes.
21:19So I haven't finished those up yet.
21:21And, um, Aries doing its thing.
21:24Ah, here's another view from down to Leward.
21:28And, uh, we're going quite nicely in, uh, kittenish breeze.
21:32Just, um, force three, just far out of the beam, apparent wind.
21:37And we're probably doing, I don't know, three or four nights.
21:42Maybe a little bit better.
21:44Bit of stream behind us as well.
21:46We've had really good stream helping us since, uh, Panama.
21:49And here's the chaos down below.
21:52Um, I'm single handed on this, uh, leg.
21:55So, um, Jill's bunk to port is, uh, all storage.
21:58There's, uh, my bunk over there to starboard.
22:01Uh, chart table.
22:03New addition.
22:04There's a fridge on board, which is, um, full of goodies.
22:09Look, there's some celery.
22:11I've got carrots under there.
22:14Um, cabbage, uh, cheese.
22:18A few bits and pieces.
22:21And there's the gully.
22:25Another change.
22:26We've got a little tablet on board, which we're not allowed on the Golden Globe Race.
22:30And that's got, uh, Navionics.
22:32So we can see our track and position.
22:35And I've also got windy on there as well.
22:39So we're, uh, we're coming, uh, approaching the doldrums now.
22:42So we, um, we left Panama on this tongue of, um, of, uh, northeasterly.
22:47And came down through here and also had a bit of a current helping us.
22:51And the currents are basically here.
22:55And you can see the current helped us come down through here and through here.
23:00Um, and that's the Galapagos.
23:03And then we're hooking down, um, over to the Marquesas, which are 4,000 miles away.
23:12About, uh, 40% of the way across the Pacific.
23:15So it's quite a big, uh, big trip.
23:17Uh, and we've also got the YB tracker.
23:20So you can see all the competition.
23:22We've got Dan on the beam.
23:24Renault and Dan ahead.
23:26Uh, I think this is Pillar and Christian over here.
23:29Um, um, uh, Gary over here.
23:33And then John and Mike are still to set off.
23:36Um, they're, uh, that's the fleet heading down towards, uh, Galapagos.
23:40And there's Koganuts famous Duny door.
23:44Um, that's, uh, uh, uh, um, a bulkhead,
23:48quarter-type bulkhead into the forward cabin.
23:50And I've got a dinghy up there and an electric outboard,
23:54which is really great.
23:55There's the loo.
23:56Um, and the electric outboards just hanging up there.
24:00It's a Timo in the corner.
24:10There's the famous bulkhead clock, 1946.
24:13And you'll see it stopped cause I forgot to wind it.
24:15And so, uh, I'll wind it, uh, now and, uh, every weekend just to, uh, it runs for eight days,
24:22but I've just, uh, not in the sea routine yet.
24:28And there's the view out the back.
24:30So, uh, Aries is doing a beautiful job.
24:33Sailing is, um, quite shy with the, uh, the asymmetric.
24:38And if we look on here, it says we're doing 4.6 knots.
24:45There we go.
24:49Oop, 5.3, bit of a luff there.
24:53Uh, the other big change is we've gone to the dark side and we've got Starlink.
24:58And, uh, it's sitting in that little box in the corner of that little tub.
25:03Uh, so that it means we've got comms at sea.
25:05So it's not just the HF radio.
25:07So, gee, Coconuts moved into the modern age with, um, Starlink.
25:13I can, uh, I can have this online stuff.
25:16I've got a fridge.
25:18I've got a dinghy.
25:19I've got an outboard.
25:20Uh, and I even had a partner Jill on today.
25:22I've got a partner Jill on board for the last leg.
25:24And she's joining in Tahiti.
25:26So there's, uh, a few changes in Good Ship Coconut for the better.
25:30Anyway, that's a quick update.
25:32And, uh, I'll catch you later on.
