SRH coach Daniel Vettori credited Mumbai's bowlers for their match-winning performance, particularly in the middle overs. He noted that the surface was challenging and praised Mumbai for reading the conditions well, especially their use of slower balls.

00:00Why is it so hard? Was it all the slow deliveries difficult to score off?
00:05Whether it were 30 slow deliveries and slow balls from Mumbai, I guess.
00:11And were it two halfway through and were it two minutes away?
00:15Yeah, I think it was a difficult surface.
00:18I think Mumbai read the conditions exceptionally well
00:21and after probably the first few overs they really relied on that slow ball
00:26and I think the slow ball is obviously effective
00:29but it's mainly effective because of their execution
00:31and there's some supreme exponents of it in Boomer and Trent Bolt and even Hardik Pandya.
00:37So I think the way that they bowled, particularly through those middle stages, really stifled us.
00:42I think we were 66 for three through those ten overs
00:45and in these sort of conditions you probably need more than that.
00:49I think we finished pretty well but just that middle stage, the way that they bowled, didn't allow us to score.
00:55And I thought we tried to counter it pretty well.
00:58I think we worked out how difficult it was trying to get through it
01:01but credit to them the way that they bowled.
01:03Is it a good balling or a good hand from the batsman?
01:08I think it's both. I think the feedback from the batsman was that it almost felt, the wicket felt dead
01:15and so any time the slower ball came it was difficult to, I suppose, get any power on it
01:21and therefore there were a lot of singles.
01:23But I also think you look at the way that bolt bowled to that small boundary.
01:27He defended it with superb Yorkers.
01:30So I think they're really clever in their planning
01:33and we just weren't able to get away the bad balls that they did bowl, which were few and far between.
01:38Daniel, Umba Indians used four overs in spin and the media faces were there as well as six in overs.
01:47The slower ones from the media faces or the spinners who were more different?
01:53Well, I think Jack's spell was fantastic.
01:56I mean, particularly he came up against our three left-handers who were all very good players of spin
02:00but he was able to extract something out of the wicket
02:03and all those batsmen said it was hard to get down to him
02:07and when he did drop short it sort of sat in the wicket and made it difficult to hit.
02:11So I think he found a good length. I think his style and his release in terms of a bit more of a square seam on the surface made it hard.
02:18In general, it was a difficult batting surface and 180 maybe would have been a par score
02:26and something that could have challenged Mumbai.
02:28But I think the way that they navigated the middle period, particularly their six-sitting prowess, took the game away from us.
02:39Hi Dan. I want to get your attention to the first few overs of SRH innings.
02:46You spoke about how the lengths work but what was the feedback from especially Abhishek and Ed as to what made it difficult?
02:54And was it also a case of SRH, like them not having enough confidence in the middle order
03:00which is why they didn't go too hard at the start or what was it?
03:04No, it was definitely the surface. Like I just said then, they both said that it felt like it was almost dead when it hit a good length.
03:11And so the value for shots wasn't quite there. We probably got away with a lot as well in that power play.
03:18We were a little bit lucky so I think we understood how difficult it was.
03:22So to come away from that power play, I think 46 for none was something that we were pretty happy with.
03:27And we thought that maybe spin would be a little bit easier but it wasn't the case.
03:32And like I've said a couple of times, I think the way that Mumbai bowled was perfect for that surface.
03:37Bush, towards the end of the end of the year, we did get some momentum in terms of getting 5700 in the last 5 hours.
03:43It did add a substantial amount of nuts to the load.
03:47But given how the key time and given how the big ticket was being,
03:53was it not, what was the logic or what was the rational plan
03:57not introducing spin in the power play or take out that option when the pieces were not even being made through?
04:04I think, I mean, I think the pace has created those chances.
04:07I think if we'd held on to that one off Jacks at the back end of the power play off Shammy,
04:12it would have been two down and that's a pretty effective power play to get those two big wickets.
04:18Probably Zeeshan in particular, as we utilise him outside the power play,
04:23it's probably not his natural game.
04:25He hasn't played a lot of T20 cricket so we probably protect him from that role a little bit.
04:30And like I said, if we take our chances, then we're probably content with how the power play went.
04:37But, our play stage personalisers and you all remain the only team to not have an away route.
04:45What would you put in the only team?
04:49Probably haven't quite adapted on surfaces that are not foreign to us.
04:56I mean, everyone's played in India for a long period of time.
04:58So, just haven't been able to deal with those in certain situations.
05:02I mean, I think if we'd been able to bowl first, then I think you get a feel for the surface
05:08and get a bit more understanding.
05:10But when you bat first on a tricky surface, it is difficult.
05:14And like I said, we were pretty content after the power play
05:17and we were content at the end of it.
05:20But we needed 20, 30 more runs and a good start.
05:23And I think that's probably been the case in all the away games so far.
05:27At that time, you talked about how they feel the pitch was.
05:31Would you say, just make the 1 for 21 of 4 and 10 more and 1 for 29, that made a big difference for you to do?
05:38Especially the two of us, or just make the ball play?
05:40Yeah, absolutely.
05:41I think, like I've said a couple of times, I think they surmise conditions well.
05:45We know that Boomer and Bolt are world-class bowlers, but the execution of the slower ball
05:50and then the execution of the Yorker from Bolt were critical.
05:55And I suppose losing Klassen in that penultimate over,
05:59if he had been able to get through that and take a few off Boomer and then sit again,
06:03those are all the little things that you hope for in these relatively low-scoring games
06:08and that wasn't for us tonight.
06:10How about that? Do you feel like teams are trying to do this this season
06:14when they're trying to play on slightly slower surfaces against you,
06:17sort of knowing what you're about as a solid?
06:20I feel like no one really has control over their surface.
06:23So there's a little bit of luck involved in terms of coming up against wickets that don't suit us.
06:31But I think there has to be more to it from our side that we have to adapt.
06:35We know that conditions like this exist in Chennai, sometimes Ahmedabad.
06:40So we're not expecting to go around the country and come up on belters.
06:46So the ball's in our court to realise that.
06:49And I think we did it relatively well today.
06:51It was just incredibly tough through those middle stages.
06:54And I've credited Mumbai, how well they bowled throughout that innings.
06:59And that really was the difference today.
07:02Question.
07:03Because, you know, playing a part in the field particularly,
07:06sort of that field impacts throughout improvement.
07:09Has it been his case about launching his workload with the international schedule,
07:13or just effectively?
07:14Andrew McDonald said he had to field, so I made him field.
07:18They were worried about him last year when he didn't field,
07:21so he's fielding at the moment.
