During a town hall on Wednesday, Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA) was asked about President Trump invoking the wartime Alien Enemies Act to justify deportations.

00:00This question is from Kerr. Why is the Alien Enemies Act still in play? It is revocable once people get to Seesaw. This opens the door to anyone to get disappeared.
00:11I'm not sure I heard it. One of the problems with standing up here is I'm not hearing this.
00:15Why is the Alien Enemies Act still into play? Essentially, it helps people get into Seesaw and anyone can get disappeared, as they say.
00:22Yeah, so this is a very old law that the president is citing for what he's done to Mr. Garcia and a lot of these other things.
00:33There are old laws that we should go back and revisit and say they don't apply anymore.
00:38One of the things I actually tried to do in the California legislature is Texas, everybody does good things sometimes,
00:45they have what's called the Sunset Committee that reviews laws and make recommendations and say,
00:52well, you know, this was passed in the 1800s, really doesn't apply anymore, it's time to get rid of it.
00:58I actually think that would be a good idea for Congress to do as well.
01:02And you'd have the courts opine and legal experts, because there might be something you're missing,
01:07but what the courts are saying is that he's not interpreting the law the way they are.
01:14So they're putting brakes on him, but the law shouldn't be there probably anymore anyways.
