Sadie Gilbert chats with Emma Ames of Zurich and Lucy Knox from Capital at the Isle of Man graduate fair 2025
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Emma Ames. I'm the Communications Executive for Zurich on the Isle of Man
00:04and we are the headline sponsor of the Graduate and Young Professional Fair for 2025.
00:10And how did you end up working at Zurich?
00:12So I actually came over during the pandemic. I graduated from my parents' attic and I haven't
00:20left since. I applied for the Communications Assistant role about two and a half years ago
00:26and I've been at Zurich ever since and I'm really enjoying it.
00:30And then what's your day-to-day in the office?
00:33So I'm the person that is communicating about business updates, general business activity.
00:40I also manage our social media here on the island. I will also look after sponsored events
00:46like Grad Fair and also things like 30 Under 30 and our award submissions.
00:50So as a sponsor, obviously the events you talk about, the Grad Fair 30 Under 30,
00:54they are focused mainly around young people. So why do you think it's important for big
00:59companies like Zurich to take the time to sponsor these events?
01:03I think that events like this are almost the ideal opportunity for young people to get a
01:09broader sense of the sectors and the industries that are on the Isle of Man. We know that young
01:13people are leaving and part of it is going to be that they don't know what is out there.
01:20I'm a very creative person. I did English at university and I think that people might not
01:25have that expectation that a financial company would have a brilliant opportunity for someone
01:32like me, but they do. And you need to come and speak to them to come and find out that those
01:37opportunities are there. So that's why we really love events like this and that's why we're really
01:42thrilled to support it.
01:44And then finally, what's one piece of advice then that you'd give to young people here at the
01:48Grad Fair today and then just young people in general who are going into their first career?
01:52You're going to have a lot of imposter syndrome, but if there's one thing that I've heard our
01:58senior members of staff say, loads of other people in the industry, just try it. You will
02:05never know if you're capable if you don't give it a go. And most of the time, you're going
02:10to smash it anyway. And you're going to realise that you're capable of so much more than
02:14you thought you were. So here we are today with Lucy Knox.
02:18And where do you work, Lucy?
02:20I work at Capital International Group here on the Isle of Man.
02:23And then obviously your company is a sponsor of the Grad Fair and it's a sponsor of 30
02:28Under 30 with Jeff the Mongoose. So why do you think it's important for a big company such
02:34as yours to support these events that are focused on young people?
02:37Yeah, I mean, the Graduate and Young Professional Fair is such a great event. It's an opportunity for
02:42young professionals or graduates returning to the Isle of Man to meet with new employers,
02:48to look at potential career pathways that they could have. Capital are really proud to
02:53be sponsoring Jeff's 30 Under 30 in the achievement category. I think it's a prime example of
02:59supporting the young talent here on the Isle of Man. There are so many successful individuals,
03:05whether that be in business or their own innovative ideas. I think, yeah, it's a perfect opportunity
03:12for us to be sponsoring and supporting the young talent here on the Isle of Man.
03:15I think there are so many employers here today. So go and speak to them, see what's out there
03:21for you, you know, and just, yeah, keep an open mind.
03:25What's one piece of advice then finally that you would give to any young person who is coming
03:30here today who's going to watch this video who are starting their career?
03:33Yeah, I think just keep an open mind, you know, don't stress that you haven't got a plan sorted
03:40out yet. I think there are so many employers here today. So go and speak to them, see what's
03:47out there for you.
