00:00First, fighting out of the red corner. He wears black with silver. He scaled 146 and three-quarter
00:06pounds. Professional record, perfect. 15 fights, 15 victories, with nine of them coming by way of
00:16knockout. Tonight, he makes his second defense of his world title. Here is the 2016 Olympian
00:24fighting out of Countess, Lithuania. The reigning, defending, undefeated, WEA welterweight
00:34champion of the world, Emantas, Stan Jonas! Stan Jonas!
00:54And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner.
01:01He wears green, white, and gray. He scaled at already 146 and one-half pounds. His professional
01:12record, also perfect. 33 fights, 33 victories, with 29 big wins coming by way of knockout.
01:23Tonight, he makes his third defense of his world title. Here is the popular, skilled, and hard-hitting
01:31welterweight phenom, proudly fighting out of and representing his home of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!
01:39Introducing, the reigning, defending, undefeated, IBF welterweight champion of the world, Jerron
01:52Boots Ennis! Ennis!
02:01Hey! Hey! Hey!
02:03Okay, gentlemen, we're scheduled about 12 rounds for the IBF and WBA welterweight championship of the world.
02:08Going over the rules in the dress room, I expect to have made my commands at all times, most of all protections at all times.
02:14So many incredible fights have taken place in this building in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
02:22Holyfield Foreman, Tyson, Spinks, Pavlik, Taylor, Gotti Ward, ladies and gentlemen.
02:29Dare we expect another thriller? This is for the unified welterweight championship of the world.
02:36Amatis Stanionis and Jerron Boots Ennis. Could we see a fight of the year contender?
02:44Ready?
02:44Here we go! 12 championship rounds between two undefeated champions.
02:53You see Amatis Stanionis is going to try to set the pace of this fight early.
02:58He is a pressure fighter and wants to come forward all night long.
03:01And you can see Boots Ennis coming out from that orthodox stance, right-handed.
03:04I personally think he's a better southpaw.
03:07And against fighters like Stanionis, you want to give him the different lifts.
03:11You want to give him a different perspective.
03:15You know, he probably expected Boots to come out southpaw, coming out orthodox.
03:19And you see Boots early on aiming a little bit for that midsection.
03:23That's the one area that's open in this sort of shell of defense that Stanionis fights in.
03:31Stanionis' motto in this fight, all gas, no brakes.
03:36He promises to take the fight to Boots and not go backwards.
03:41Yeah, but with a motto like that, all gas, no brakes, you're bound to run into an accident, you know?
03:46Guys like Boots, they love that kind of stuff.
03:48That's food for them, man.
03:50Stanionis needs to be smart with that pressure, which he is.
03:53That's the thing about him, and behind that ramrock jab.
03:57But you can see that Boots is looking for that uppercut already.
04:00I mean, stabbing him down with the jabs to set up that right uppercut.
04:03Those are money punches by Boots.
04:05And that uppercut got a smile out of Stanionis, who again, his wife is due any day with a baby.
04:13In fact, he was due three days ago.
04:15He made that body shot around the guard by Boots.
04:21In his last fight...
04:23Oh, nice counter left from Stanionis.
04:25His last fight, Stanionis, he kind of got touched up in the body in those middle rounds.
04:29I love the fact that Ennis is already touching that body early.
04:35The criticism for Boots in his last fight is that he was getting hit too often and too cleanly.
04:40Because he fights to his competition, man.
04:42He needs to be motivated.
04:43He's not motivated by a guy that he went 24 rounds with.
04:46You can definitely see how sharp he is against Stanionis.
04:49He's not going to get touched in this fight.
04:51Unless Stanionis forces him to get touched.
04:55And you can see right now, Stanionis is not really throwing the shots that he normally had custom throwing so early.
05:01And Chris Boots looks bigger, doesn't he?
05:03Yeah, he looks like he's rehydrated really well.
05:05And that's a part of this.
05:06For the last three or four fights, Boots enters his spot under IBF rules,
05:11which has required a 10-pound rehydration the next day.
05:14Because this is a unification fight, that 10-pound rehydration clause goes out the window.
05:19So he's been able to rehydrate perhaps a little bit more going into this fight.
05:23Yeah, he was asking yesterday what he was going to have for breakfast the day of the fight.
05:27And he said everything.
05:28Yeah, and at the weigh-in, he looked like the smaller fighter, thinner.
05:31And you can see the Stanionis is bulkier around the midsection, around the torso area.
05:35But rehydration, man, it's key.
05:37And the fact that they don't have to just do 10 pounds and actually do your natural weight,
05:42that's all advantage for Joran Ennis.
05:47Looks!
05:48The longer this fight goes, the more violent it's going to get.
05:51You heard Draw Boots and his father tell him,
05:54hey, he's ducking his head, try to catch him with that uppercut.
05:57Yeah, that's how you turn that high guard, that people do defense against him.
06:02He hunches over and he has a way for an uppercut to land.
06:11Boots has been able to keep Stanionis at bay with that long jab.
06:15Yeah, which has fended off the jab of Stanionis, which is his best weapon.
06:20He's one of the best jabbers in all of boxing.
06:23He lands about 10 jabs per round, connects at about a 36% connect rate.
06:27That's a major equipment for him.
06:29Not just in scoring shots, but setting up other ones.
06:31Not only that, but you're using your advantages, your height, your 6-inch reach.
06:35That's what you want to do with your boost right now.
06:37Keep this fight in the middle, stay off the ropes and keep popping that jab.
06:40And looking for that left uppercut.
06:46See, this is going to be a fight where, of course, the matador is going to have the advantage over the bull
06:52because the bull has slower feet.
06:53Stanionis has slower feet, flatter feet, and he cuts off the ring really great going to his right.
06:58But as a soft pal, Bluch going to his right, it's not a, it's not a, he's not as easy as cutting off the ring going to the left.
07:13See right there, when Bluch went to his left, he kind of tripped up a little bit, Stanionis.
07:19This is the ninth consecutive fight in which Stanionis is facing both height and reach disadvantages.
07:25And it's two inches taller, a 6-inch reach advantage, nice left from Stanionis.
07:30And then a right.
07:31And that's the criticism we have in the end.
07:32It's a beautiful combination, throw five, six punches, but got hit with one big shot.
07:37And Bluch landed a good body shot there in that exchange.
07:40This is the fight we thought we'd seen.
07:44Stanionis constantly trying to come forward and Ennis trying to cut him off at the pass.
07:48Yeah, no feeling out between these two guys, just going straight at it.
07:56Stiff jab from Stanionis, who says boxing is all about timing.
08:01Everything revolves around that shotgun jab of Stanionis, but if he can't have a stationary target to land,
08:07it's going to be a lot harder to track down Ennis.
08:10That was another good body shot.
08:12Left hand, right left red pass.
08:14It's going to be all body shots, man.
08:16That's how you're going to slow down this tank.
08:18If those body shots, those jabs, movement, lateral, movement to your left, right, switching orthodox.
08:24Southpump, showing everything you've got.
08:31Stanionis coming off a 336-day absence.
08:34Only his second fight in three years.
08:37And sharp counterpunching by Ennis.
08:50Chris, is this fight starting the way you thought it might?
08:52It's starting a little bit faster, but it's evolving into the fight as I expected and most people expected.
08:57Good advice between rounds in the corner of Amante Stanionis.
09:01Marvin Simodio, his long-time trainer, saying if you're going to throw that jab,
09:05you've got to throw something else behind you.
09:06You've got to let your hands go when you're exchanging.
09:15There's those jabs you were calling for earlier from Stanionis, Sergio.
09:18Yeah, but see, he needs to do it.
09:20He needs to punch with Ennis.
09:22Ennis has a slightly faster hands.
09:24So if you're going to be...
09:25Stanionis is either blocking or he's jabbing.
09:28He's going to have to do a little bit of bolt at the same time.
09:34Trying that wind-up uppercut, Ennis.
09:36That's going to be his punch.
09:37No doubt about it.
09:38Now, Ennis is just...
09:39He's shining right now, man.
09:40I mean, everything's just so smooth.
09:42He's not overloading on punches, either.
09:48And it feels like we're seeing a decreased output from Stanionis
09:52that we've seen in previous fights.
09:54He's still walking Boots down,
09:56but unlike what we saw against Butaev and Maestrei,
09:59he's not letting his hands go in those situations.
10:01Yeah.
10:02Boots is getting a little cute here, isn't he?
10:04Need a right hand there in the corner.
10:05I mean, that's how he always comes.
10:07Oh, is that left hand making a call at it?
10:08A knockdown?
10:09No, he says it's behind the head.
10:11A lot of the Lithuanians here in the arena,
10:14and there are a pretty good contingent of them,
10:16voicing their displeasure.
10:19No, Boots is so talented that he just takes his talent for granted, man,
10:23and sometimes he just gets a little...
10:25I guess lazy is a word, but a little overconfident,
10:28and that's when he can get checked.
10:31And that left uppercut is landing consistently.
10:35Those are hard shots by Ennis.
10:37See, that's the problem with that high guard defense.
10:44You know, defense like Winky Wright had,
10:46and fighters like Ie-Corte and Cloudy,
10:48they didn't get knocked out.
10:50You know, guys like that didn't get knocked out,
10:52but they got bruised up, they got beat,
10:53they got out-pointed by fighters that are content,
10:56hitting the gloves, going around the gloves,
10:58and, of course, stabbing the body.
10:59Boots' team felt that...
11:03Oh, nice jab there from Stanionis.
11:05Boots' team felt that...
11:07Stanionis could bring out the best of Ennis,
11:09that we haven't seen the best of Boots yet,
11:11because no one has taken him to that next level.
11:13Can this Lithuanian be the man to do it?
11:16He's grinded and lands a right hand,
11:18but a counter left for Boots!
11:20And that's what Stanionis needs to do.
11:22He landed a counter right on his own.
11:23He punched with Boots.
11:25He's going to have to go through the fire.
11:26Both of them landed.
11:27Big right hands.
11:29Boots clearly has more pop.
11:31That's for sure.
11:3229 knockouts in his 33 wins.
11:47And, of course, keep popping that jab.
11:49Three entertaining rounds so far.
11:54Chris has...
11:56Stanionis won any of them.
11:57No, I thought third round was probably his best round
12:00in terms of landed punches,
12:01but I think so far it's been a boot-satisfied.
12:04Three rounds, the num, 30 to 27.
12:06His power is just a difference maker at this stage.
12:10Footwork is a difference in this stage, Chris.
12:13I'm telling you, this is...
12:14He's got a lot of punches, though.
12:15He's got a lot of punches.
12:16No, no, I hear you, but Stanionis can't land a punch
12:18because he can't track down Boots.
12:19The only time he does land is when he throws with him,
12:21and they're both stationary.
12:23Good body shot there by Boots.
12:24Yeah, these investments in the body,
12:26if they keep up, they're going to pay off in the later rounds.
12:29Stanionis just looks so much smaller than Boots in there right now.
12:33He's used to that, though.
12:35Stanionis was scheduled to face Virgil Ortiz Jr. three times.
12:47You talk about Boots avoiding him.
12:49Stanionis had a bout on the first date because of an emergency appendectomy,
12:53and the next two bouts canceled after Virgil Ortiz Jr. dealt with illness.
12:57And see, there's another fighter, Virgil Ortiz,
12:59that has that high guard defense and the same output,
13:02only he doesn't have the same jab as Stanionis.
13:05That would have been a monster fight, man, because right now,
13:07Boots not only has the defense, the footwork,
13:10but the accuracy and power behind it.
13:12Good right hand from Stanionis.
13:17He's getting his shots in, Chris.
13:19It's just not nearly the same power that Ennis has on him.
13:23Yeah, he's got to put his combinations together a little bit more.
13:26Just the body work of Boots is so impressive at this stage,
13:29and he is one of the better body punchers in all of boxing.
13:32He's dating down there.
13:38And look, it's slyly switching back to orthodox stance right now.
13:41Looks like a small cut over the right eye or under the right eye of Stanionis.
13:45Stanionis said he prepared for both styles.
13:50Brought in southpaws and orthodox fighters,
13:52lots of them to prepare for this fight.
13:54Yeah, but none of them have this kind of naturally gifted ability, man.
13:57I mean, speed, power, long arms.
14:03It was a beautiful, beautiful boxer puncher right here.
14:08Boots has told us, listen, tonight's going to be my crowning achievement,
14:11my biggest moment.
14:13He envisions himself finishing Stanionis
14:16and celebrating in front of this very pro Boots crowd,
14:19and he's given him plenty to cheer about offensively and defensively.
14:23He is schooling Stanionis so far as far as making a miss.
14:27I mean, you don't make champions miss three, four punches in a row like that.
14:34Career-high payday for Stanionis.
14:36This is his moment.
14:37Can he cash in?
14:38He's got work to do.
14:39Round five.
14:40Sergio, what would your advice be to Amonis Stanionis right now if you were in his corner?
14:42Well, you've got to get physical.
14:43You've got to get in there.
14:44You've got to fight fire with fire, man.
14:45You're going to get hit on the way in.
14:46But you have the wide shoulders.
14:47You have those big biceps and forearms.
14:48You have that high guard.
14:49Take the chances.
14:50And once you're in there, you've got to let it rip, man.
14:51And especially downstairs.
14:52You have to bang away at the body, the ribs, anything that Boots gives you.
15:08Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of body work from Stanionis, certainly not to the level that we've
15:14seen from Boots.
15:15Because, Ennis, you don't want to figure out what's going to take.
15:19level that we've seen from Boots because Ennis is not allowing him he's
15:23maintaining that range and distance with that long jab and of course that that
15:28sharp upper body movement look at that defense
15:31there's Donnie on is throwing some shots to the waistband
15:37trying to grind out some opportunities here in the corner look at the total
15:41punches landed Ennis has landed ten more
15:49power punches landed over double for Boots 35 compared to 14
15:58good right hand from Ennis and it downstairs upstairs that's what you
16:03wanted to see when he got inside that's exactly what he needs to do and Boots
16:07in the loop better pick up that left hand nice left this is the best round for Stani
16:11Onis by fall Boots better pick up that left hand getting lazy with that dropping
16:16on that hand Stani Onis is catching on now he caught on to the speed now and the timing
16:25good body shot there by Boots
16:32Stani Onis the WBA welterweight champion
16:36fighting for the ring belt the lineal championship that's become the gold standard in this sport
16:45I didn't think Ennis was gonna have this easy of a time out jabbing Stani Onis
16:52Stani Onis has one of the best jabs in boxing in the business
16:56and he's winning this round though you think
16:59he's doing well
17:00there's the uppercut Stani Onis blocking those punches but they're so powerful they're still seemingly doing some damage backing him up
17:08and there's a bloody nose now as he lands the right hand but eats the left of his own
17:13Boots coming on here as Stani Onis covers up
17:17he's turning into a bloody mess
17:25Boots so relaxed in there
17:27in the line of fire man I can't believe how relaxed this man is
17:30it's incredible watching this
17:32it's like he feels like he's fighting Stani Onis
17:35in slow motion he can see everything coming man
17:37he's like kneel the matrix in there
17:39dodging bullets dodging punches
17:41looking sharp
17:47that was a very good round for Armata Stani Onis
17:50right up until the final 30-40 seconds
17:52when Boots started tee off
17:54and really opened up the blood coming from that nose
17:56so evening a round that Stani Onis may have won
17:58he took a lot of punishment
18:00I agree yep
18:01yeah the two guys walking back to the ring
18:03walking back to the corners
18:04you know the judges are looking at Stani Onis
18:06is pouring blood out of his nose
18:10Boots still looks as fresh as a daisy in there
18:16I feel like Stani Onis is doing everything he can Sergio
18:19I mean he's giving it his all
18:21and this level is to championship boxing man
18:23I mean
18:25it's just how incredible Boots is
18:27how
18:28how
18:29I mean it really is amazing watching this man up close
18:31because he's not running
18:32he's not boxing
18:33he's staying in the pocket looking for punches
18:35he's punching in between the shots
18:37risking danger
18:39there's your total punches landed in that last round
18:41feels a bit skewed
18:4319 of 68
18:44from Ennis
18:4510 of 31 for Stani Onis
18:48and notice look
18:49as soon as Boots gets near the ropes
18:51he goes right back to the middle of the ring
18:52that's another thing that Stani Onis have been issues with
18:57you know you can't
18:58you can't keep
18:59someone in the same
19:00in the same space
19:01you can't get them against the ropes
19:02big swing and a miss there from Stani Onis
19:05as Boots fighting out in a southpaw stance now
19:11when they're doing that front foot battle
19:16you really put your opponent at a disadvantage
19:18if you can step on top of his foot as you're throwing a punch
19:21it's harder for him to move out of the way
19:25you know Boots is the sharper fighter
19:27in part because he is
19:29most definitely the most more active
19:31of the two fighters
19:32even though the two fights last year
19:33weren't his best performance
19:34he's still got two fights in
19:35and Matis Stani Onis
19:37only got one
19:38and then was off for the entire year
19:39before that
19:40so he's had to battle
19:41stops and starts
19:42and training camps
19:43ring rust
19:44that he had admitted affected him
19:45in the Maestrade fight
19:47and we talk all the time Serge
19:48activity does matter
19:49and I think as this fight progresses
19:51it's going to matter even more
19:52you know activity matters especially for boxers
19:55but you know whenever you have the style
19:57with Stani Onis
19:58you would think that it doesn't bother you as much
20:00I think the footwork
20:02is bothering Stani Onis
20:03the fact that he can't compete with the foot speed
20:05of Ennis
20:06and look those body shots right there
20:08that Stani Onis is
20:09kryptonite I believe
20:11yeah he's shrinking
20:12and now Boots teeing off for the left uppercut
20:14and down goes Stani Onis
20:16he softened him up to the body
20:18and came up with the upper
20:19cause Boots knows exactly what he's doing
20:21he's breaking down Stani Onis
20:23the face tells the tale
20:26blood everywhere
20:27and the body's not doing much better
20:30can Boots seal the deal
20:33here in round 6
20:3410 seconds to go
20:45Stani Onis
20:46still in there slinging his guns
20:50this corner has seen enough
20:54as Jerome Boots Ennis
20:57gets his crowning moment
20:59the defining win of his career
21:01and he's done it right here
21:03in Atlantic City
21:04no mas for the Lithuanian
21:07and man that was a beat down
21:09a professional championship style beat down by Boots Ennis man
21:13an infant
21:14a conversation with Stani Onis
21:15he didn't seem to put up much of an argument
21:17did he?
21:18nah he knew he was a beat man
21:20and that's a
21:21that's a man that's gonna be a father any day now man
21:23and health comes first
21:24he knows he got
21:25he got outclassed
21:27by a better man tonight
21:28and there's no shame in that
21:30Boots Ennis
21:31Boots Ennis said
21:32I want to be undisputed
21:33in the welterweight division
21:35he's got two of the belts
21:37only two more to go
21:39and that's the moment
21:43that Jerron Ennis picked up his 34th win
21:46he's got 30 knockouts now
21:48and there's not going to be a lot of criticism for Boots after this one
21:51no he's not
