Ahead of Easter weekend, I tried M&S' new range of Easter treats to see which tickled my fancy and which underwhelmed...

00:00Hi, my name is Jack Marshall. I'm a digital food and drink reporter and welcome to another one of
00:04our food reviews and with Easter just around the corner there really is only one topic of
00:09conversation when it comes to culinary matters and that is Easter. So I headed down to M&S to
00:15try out some of their Easter range, some of the brand new things they have in and four items really
00:20stood out to me and that is their Chicky Choccy Speckled Eggs which are essentially M&S's own
00:26version of Mini Eggs. Their Percy Pig and Chirping Chicks which yeah obviously a sweet version of
00:34an Easter treat. Speckled Egg Cookies which were kind of a merger between the aforementioned
00:39Speckled Eggs and some of their cookies and then the one which was most exciting is this one behind
00:45me which is the Dippy Egg Filled Hot Cross Buns which promised to be a hot cross bun with essentially
00:50a cream egg-like substance in the middle. I thought that's a winner, that's got to be a winner.
00:55I can't wait to try it. So anyway we'll start with the Chicky Choccy Speckled Eggs. Try saving that
01:01five times in a row whilst enjoyed a few drinks. These were okay, they weren't as good as Mini Eggs
01:07which is the main yardstick you're going to be measuring them against. Mini Eggs are just,
01:12they've got a classic flavour, they've got a classic smell, they've got like the shell just like has a
01:17lovely little sweetness to it. These were okay, the chocolate inside wasn't the best, it didn't really
01:20do it for me. The Cadbury's and Mini Eggs really do come through and add a lot to it. I think that's
01:24what I really learned from trying these speckled eggs. They were okay, they looked really pretty,
01:29they were really like aesthetically nice. Perfect for anyone who just wants to take a picture, put
01:34them on Instagram and then not add the calories but yeah, not an immediate winner for myself.
01:39It's something similar with the Percy Pigs and the Chirping Chicks. Now everyone loves a Percy
01:44Pig, absolute classic, really nice, sweet from M&S, an iconic little bit of confectionery but the
01:50Chirping Chicks were like cola flavoured and they were like obviously with Percy Pigs being pink,
01:55these were like slightly brown. Nice of something different, obviously same consistency, same
02:00kind of like vibe as Percy Pigs, just a cola flavour. That's it, never going to blow your socks
02:05off, never going to change your life in any way, shape or form but they were fine, they were okay.
02:09Yeah. Speckled Egg Cookies. Now these are outstanding. If you fancy something,
02:15it's a treat worthy and you're going to pick one thing, one thing only, I'd choose these.
02:21Everything about them was great. I loved the consistency of the cookie. It wasn't hard and
02:24crumbly. It was one of those softer cookies with a bit of a bite to it, almost like a cookie
02:27merged with a brownie, almost obviously without like, you know, other features of a brownie but
02:32it had that soft cookie dough to it. The flavour and the bake was really nice. It wasn't overly sweet.
02:40There were bits of speckled egg in there as well which provided like a nice crunch to it as well.
02:44Outstanding. Really, really good. Love those. Would definitely have them again.
02:48And then finally we're coming on to the Dippy Egg Filled Hot Cross Buns which, like I say,
02:51I was so excited to try. I was really, really keen to see what they were like and
02:55I was a bit underwhelmed if I'm honest. A little let down by it. Now, I think in my mind I was
03:00imagining something which you'd get off Bake Off which would be like this incredible thing like
03:04a hot cross bun and it'd have like almost like a full cream egg in the middle or something you see,
03:08you know, when you get cream eggs in brownies and they're like, you get the half cut
03:11and everything's kind of like really aesthetic but these were more like a pre-baked hot cross bun.
03:17You could have them raw, so to speak. You didn't have to put them in the toaster first
03:20and it didn't have like the cream egg shell. Obviously, it just had the essential bit in
03:26that you'd find in the middle of a cream egg in the middle of the bun itself.
03:29It just felt like a bit of a splurge in the middle and that was it. There needs to be more
03:35of it. It needs to be tastier. It needs to have its own thing. The bun itself wasn't too nice. It
03:41was kind of like chewy and doughy as opposed to light and fluffy. Didn't quite work for me.
03:48Bit of a novelty. I'm tempted to say the word gimmick. It was a bit gimmicky but other people
03:53I'm surely going to like them, I assume. But yeah, that's it for my review of M&S's Easter treats.
03:59I hope you all have a wonderful Easter. Get in touch and let me know if you love these things
04:02behind me, if you absolutely swear by them, if you weren't convinced like I was. But yeah,
04:07I suppose all that's left to say is to have a wonderful Easter and thank you for watching.
04:11Cheers.
