00:00There is still an opportunity for Manchester United to qualify for the Champions League through the Europa League.
00:06They've got the second leg of that tie in midweek at Old Trafford.
00:10It's currently all square with Lyon after a two-all draw.
00:13But it's been interesting to see that the teams with big Champions League, big Europa League, big European games in midweek coming up
00:20have struggled this weekend. Arsenal with that one-all draw against Brentford.
00:24Brighton 2-2 against Leicester. Manchester City 5-2 against Crystal Palace.
00:27Forrest beating 1-0 by Everton. Southampton beating 3-0 at home by Aston Villa.
00:33Chelsea with a two-all draw against Ipswich. She led 2-0 in that game early today.
00:38Julio Anciso and Ben Johnson put them in front.
00:40And then Twanzebi's own goal, followed by Jadon Sancho. Earned Chelsea a point in that one.
00:44And then Tottenham again, one of those European teams, with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Wolves.
00:49He went 2-0 up through Renek Norrie and Jed Spence's own goal.
00:53Then Mattis Tell got Spurs one back. Jorgen Strand-Larsen made it 3-1.
00:57Richarlison again gave Spurs a bit of hope. But Mattias Cunha, who came off the bench in that game,
01:02made it 4-2 to Wolves. And that was the final score.
01:05Liverpool have sent themselves to within six points of the Premier League title
01:08with a 2-1 win against West Ham. A late winner from Virgil van Dijk in that game.
01:13And there's still another match to come. Bournemouth against Fulham on Sky Sports Premier League
01:18on the Monday night football. 8 o'clock for the kick-off.
01:206.30 for all the build-up and reflection to the weekend's action.
01:26Here we go then. Newcastle United up to fourth place in the table.
01:30They move on to 56 points. That is the highest possible total achievable
01:35by Manchester United, today's opponent.
01:37And moving into the bottom half of the table where Manchester United find themselves after that.
01:43They can get to 56 points, but their previous highest was 58.
01:52Their lowest ever finish was 8th.
01:54And that's looking increasingly unlikely that they get above that for Manchester United,
01:59although there's still a long way to go before then.
02:01And Manchester United slipped down into 14th place, courtesy of that change in goal difference as well.
02:12Congratulations. Bruno, we have to start and talk.
02:15How much was that performance for Eddie Howe, wherever he was watching on from today?
02:19Yeah, when we went to the pitch, we said we're going to play for him.
02:23He has been part of our success.
02:27He has been unbelievable for us, so we miss him in the training hour this week.
02:31And hopefully this win is going to give him a little bit of happiness.
02:35And we're hopeful.
02:36We want to see him back for the next game.
02:39Yeah, just to give him a little bit of happiness on this tough week for him.
02:43It's been a tough week for him, Harvey.
02:45Was he able to send you any messages ahead of today?
02:48No, I think he's on the road to recovery, hopefully.
02:51So I think that's his main focus at the minute.
02:53But like Bruno said, he's so influential throughout the week.
02:56And obviously on a match day.
02:58So we knew we had a job to do today without him.
03:01And we did that.
03:02We said that before the game.
03:03It was one of them where we need to put a smile on his face.
03:06And yeah, hopefully he's on the road to recovery.
03:08Definitely put a smile on his face.
03:10And I think there's a fairly decent smile on yours.
03:12How good a week has it been for Harvey Barnes?
03:16It's been good.
03:16You know, I'm enjoying it.
03:19I feel like I'm in a good rhythm of playing now.
03:21And I'm just enjoying being out on the pitch every week.
03:23So yeah, long may it continue.
03:26Bruno, how big has his contribution been in recent weeks and particularly today?
03:31He's an unbelievable player.
03:32He's fun.
03:33I love him the way he plays, the way he should.
03:35He's always working hard and trying to help the team.
03:38And he deserves his moment.
03:39I'm very, very happy for him.
03:41Like I said, he's an unbelievable professional and an unbelievable player.
03:45Harvey, when we spoke on Monday night, you said Newcastle weren't at their best.
03:50In the second half in particular, did we see the best of Newcastle United?
03:54Yeah, definitely.
03:56I think first half we played well.
03:58I know that the scoreline didn't show that.
04:01But I thought we dominated the first half and created chances.
04:04I think they only had their one shot on target, which they scored.
04:06So we were happy the first half.
04:08We just knew we had to build on that, keep doing what we were doing.
04:10And the chances were going to come.
04:11And they did.
04:12You know, in the end, it was a good game and a good scoreline.
04:15Bruno, it's five wins on the spin in all competitions.
04:18People talked about whether you'd be able to kick on having won that trophy.
04:23Have you exceeded even your own expectations in what you've been able to do so far?
04:29Yeah, we're happy about what we are doing so far.
04:32But I think as a group, we just think game by game.
04:35You know, we're not next focused in the next game.
04:41We know we have been good.
04:43But for us, it's not enough.
04:44Like we said, it was unbelievable to win the cup.
04:46But we want more.
04:47It's not enough for us.
04:49We want to put our name in the club history, keep it going.
04:52So, yeah, it's unbelievable what we have done so far.
04:55But we want more.
04:56Quickly and finally, a word from both of you.
04:58How important is Champions League qualification?
05:01Unbelievable means everything for the club.
05:04Like we have done so far, it's good.
05:07But like I said, it's not enough.
05:08We want to play Champions League again next season.
05:10But we are just thinking game by game, step by step.
05:13And here we go to another one on Wednesday.
05:17Yeah, we've already had an unbelievable moment this year.
05:20And that obviously gets us to European football.
05:22But we want to be in the Champions League.
05:25You know, we're proving that at the minute game by game.
05:27And we've got ourselves into a good position in the league.
05:30You know, it's up to us.
05:31If we perform every week and get the results that we know we can,
05:34then we're going to be there come the end of the season.
05:36So, it's what we want next year.
05:38Well, listen, well done to both of you.
05:39Harvey, you are the player of the match.
05:41Bruno can't believe it, by the way.
05:43He was arguing the toss for me.
05:44You deserve it.
05:45But you are.
05:46Do the honours, Bruno.
05:47Well done, bro.
05:47You deserve it, man.
05:48Thank you, thank you.
05:50Cheers, guys.
05:51Yeah, two goals in his all-round performance.
05:53We'll seal that for Harvey Barnes, despite the protestations of Bruno.
05:57So, this is how it looks, then, in the race for the Champions League,
05:59with the positions of the teams across the top,
06:01from Nottingham Forest in third, Newcastle, Manchester City, Chelsea,
06:05down to Aston Villa with the games that they have remaining.
06:09By midweek, they will all have played the same number of games
06:11because Newcastle have their game against Crystal Palace in hand
06:14on Wednesday night.
06:15You can see that live on Sky Sports.
06:17If everybody were to win their remaining games,
06:20Newcastle would finish in third.
06:21That can't happen because they play each other,
06:24and it's just not a possibility.
06:25But it just underlines how strong a position Newcastle have put themselves in.
06:31Yeah, when you look at the games that's left for them,
06:33it's a tough run-in.
06:34They've still got to play Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton,
06:37Aston Villa away as well.
06:38So, it's a tough run-in.
06:40But the run of form they're in at the moment,
06:42it doesn't matter who they come up against.
06:43I feel like they're very confident.
06:45There's a real good togetherness about this team,
06:48and hopefully they can go on and get the results they need
06:50to get them into that Champions League place.
06:52Opta have said that Aston Villa have got the lowest chance
06:55of finishing inside the top five.
06:57When they've looked at the fixtures,
06:58they've looked at the corresponding fixtures earlier in the season.
07:03At this stage of the season,
07:05that doesn't always necessarily play out.
07:08But when you look at it,
07:09how do you assess Newcastle's chances of finishing in the Champions League spots?
07:12They're certainly in their driving seat now, I think,
07:14with the games, they have the momentum.
07:15I was here about six weeks ago when they lost the cup game to Brighton,
07:18and I thought they'd do well to recover from that.
07:20I thought it was a huge setback.
07:22But my goodness, they have.
07:23They've got good options off the bench.
07:25The attack of players are on fire.
07:26Then you'll bring on people like Gordon with the pace.
07:29United couldn't cope with it.
07:30But this is where you find out about your squads.
07:32You look at Aston Villa yesterday,
07:34bringing quality players off the bench.
07:36Three of them obviously scoring.
07:38So that strength and depth will be tested over the next few weeks.
07:40But for Newcastle,
07:42and what Newcastle have got used to know over the last good few months,
07:45they're used to winning big matches.
07:47I think they'll deal with that pressure.
07:49I think they've got a great chance,
07:51and certainly in the driving seat,
07:52to get in that Champions League spot.
07:55David asked the guys there
07:57whether their reaction post-Carabao Cup final win
08:00was even surpassing their own expectations.
08:04The question was asked,
08:05will this be the kind of pinnacle of their season
08:07and will they coast to the end
08:09or will they use it to kick on?
08:11And that's what they've done, Les.
08:12I always feel there's pivotal games in the season,
08:15and I said that about the Cup final.
08:16I felt if they won the Cup final,
08:18that would boost them to go on
08:19and look for that Champions League place.
08:22Although they were thinking about it,
08:23that game, I think, against Liverpool
08:25showed them that they can play against these big sides
08:27and win them in a Cup final.
08:29And that gives everyone a boost.
08:31I said they were going to party here
08:32until the end of the season
08:33now that they've won that Cup.
08:34And there's a real nice atmosphere
08:36around the place at the moment.
08:37And the players are feeding off that.
08:39And like I said, hopefully,
08:40I'm looking at those fixtures
08:41and you look at Aston Villa,
08:43they've still got a Champions League game to play.
08:44You look at Chelsea,
08:45they're still in the Europa.
08:47So there's some teams there
08:48that are probably looking at other things
08:50as well as the league.
08:51But Newcastle have just got the league
08:53to concentrate on now.
08:54Yeah, and they've played fewer games
08:56than Manchester United have this season
08:57because of their European involvement
08:59in the Europa League.
09:01That is Manchester United's route
09:02into the Champions League
09:04should they win it.
09:05But it's not going well for them
09:06at all in the league.
09:07They find themselves in 14th place
09:09on the wrong end of that 4-1 scoreline.
09:12Here's Ruben Amarin with David Craig.
09:15Ruben, clearly another difficult moment for you
09:18and a disappointing result.
09:19How do you reflect on that 90-plus minutes?
09:23Many mistakes.
09:24They were stronger in the second ball,
09:27so they were a better team.
09:28But we did a lot of mistakes
09:32that can become harder to win a game.
09:38And that's all.
09:39What do you put those mistakes down to
09:40at this moment in time?
09:42Is there a lack of confidence
09:43and perhaps even a lack of belief
09:45among some of your players at this moment?
09:47It's a little bit of everything.
09:50It's hard to point one thing
09:51that goes wrong in these moments.
09:54But it's really hard to win
09:58against these top teams like Newcastle.
10:01And when we make mistakes
10:03that can help the opponent to score,
10:06it's harder.
10:07But let's focus on Thursday.
10:08It's really important for us.
10:10Were some of the goals you conceded today
10:12too easy from your perspective
10:14for Newcastle to score?
10:15I think you can see that
10:17we can do so much better.
10:20So that's it.
10:22Let's focus on Thursday.
10:24Analyse this game.
10:25But all the mistakes that we did today,
10:27we cannot do it Thursday.
10:29I can sense the disappointment
10:30and perhaps the anger within you
10:33at this moment in time.
10:34Once again, the criticism will come
10:36from outside, from pundits,
10:38from media people.
10:40Is there the belief in your players
10:43that you can see that other people can't see?
10:47That the criticism will come?
10:48Lack of running, lack of commitment
10:50in key moments.
10:51Do you understand that criticism?
10:53I understand it.
10:54I don't care.
10:55Nothing is worse than lose games.
10:58So people can say whatever they want to say
11:02and it's hard to...
11:04I don't want to defend myself
11:05or anything like that
11:09because if you look at our position,
11:11the table says it all.
11:14So let's move on.
11:15It's really important Thursday
11:16so I don't care what people say.
11:18Losing games is the hardest part by far
11:20from this job.
11:23So, again, let's focus on Thursday.
11:27How big then is Thursday?
11:29It was big before today.
11:31How big does it become now
11:33for Manchester United as a whole?
11:35Not just you, not just the players.
11:37Of course, it's really important.
11:39We know that we have a chance
11:40to get Champions League
11:43but let's focus stage by stage.
11:44We have an important game on Thursday.
11:46It's going to be really, really hard
11:48but we need to focus on that
11:50and then go to the next stage.
11:53What do you do to pick your players up
11:55and whatever players you choose
11:57to put out there on Thursday,
11:58what do you do to instil the belief
12:00that you will need to go further
12:02in that competition
12:03in the hope of still getting
12:04Champions League football next season?
12:06We have one season a lot like that
12:09with difficult losses,
12:13difficult moments
12:14so we are used to get up also.
12:17So we can do that Thursday.
12:19Let's focus on Thursday.
12:20So it's a different game
12:21when the game starts.
12:24It's a different history
12:25with our fans.
12:27We need to give something
12:28to our fans
12:29and to go to the next stage.
12:31We spoke about Andre Onana
12:32before the game.
12:34What's your sense now?
12:36Does he come back
12:36into the reckoning for Thursday?
12:38Everybody, everybody.
12:40Again, it's a difficult season
12:43so tomorrow we are going to prepare
12:45in the next game.
12:46He's not forgetting this game
12:48but he's focused on the next one
12:49because this game,
12:51after the game,
12:51we cannot change nothing.
12:52So let's focus on the next one.
12:53Ruben, one very final question.
12:55You've always been very open
12:56and honest with us
12:57about the task you face here
12:59and the difficulties you face.
13:01But is that task
13:02a bigger task now
13:04where you find yourselves
13:05and looking forward
13:06and how big, in your opinion,
13:08is it to change the fortunes
13:09of this club?
13:10We already talked about that.
13:11Let's focus on game by game.
13:13So if you think in all the pictures,
13:15sometimes it's really hard
13:17to face all the problems
13:18at the same time.
13:19Our problem,
13:20our biggest problem
13:21is the game on Thursday.
13:22Let's focus on that.
13:23We wish you a change of hope.
13:24Thank you very much.
13:26Well, you can understand
13:27why Ruben Amarin
13:29would want to focus
13:30on the game on Thursday
13:31rather than this defeat
13:33at St. James' Park
13:34and senior players
13:35looking very annoyed
13:37at the end of that
13:38and we will hear
13:39from some of them
13:40a little bit later on.
13:41But in terms of the performances
13:44that we've seen from them
13:44in the Premier League,
13:46he came in when they were in 12th.
13:48They're now in 14th
13:49at the end of,
13:50pretty much the end
13:50of this round of fixtures.
13:52Have you seen positives
13:53from Ruben Amarin's
13:55time at Man United?
13:56Not at the moment.
13:57You mentioned that
13:57nobody likes to lose games.
13:59Of course not.
13:59But sometimes it's the way you lose.
14:01It's the way they give up
14:01some of the goals
14:02in the second half.
14:03Obviously some mistakes
14:04from players,
14:05losing possession.
14:06Obviously you knew
14:07Newcastle were going to
14:08put you under pressure,
14:09obviously.
14:10So that's the big hang-up
14:11you'd have.
14:12They've lost 14 league games
14:13and they lost 14 last season.
14:15So that's why you have to
14:15point a finger
14:16at this group of players.
14:18The only defence I have
14:20obviously for a lot of the players
14:21is a lot of them
14:22are still new
14:22to the Premier League
14:23and the manager's
14:25new to the Premier League.
14:26I think the manager,
14:27if you spoke to him,
14:28I think he's scratching his head.
14:29He's obviously frustrated
14:30in that interview, of course.
14:31He wants to focus on
14:32the next game
14:33but you also have to reflect
14:35on the game today.
14:36That's where we're at.
14:37I bet you he can't believe
14:39how bad the United team is
14:40but he obviously can't say that
14:42and he's talking about
14:43recruiting this summer
14:44but this group of players,
14:46the mistakes they're making,
14:47I've mentioned at the end
14:48of the game,
14:49they can't seem to get
14:50around the pitch,
14:51there's no power in the team.
14:54Some of the players
14:54who can run,
14:55I think there's some players
14:56who can run
14:57but they don't want to run.
14:58That's another worry.
14:59Some of the goals
15:00they gave up,
15:00you've got to experience
15:02right back
15:02just letting somebody
15:04run by him.
15:05That's the bit
15:06I would be frustrated with
15:07but I think the premiership
15:10has caught this manager
15:10and his coaching staff.
15:12Even his first game
15:13where we covered
15:14was down at Ipswich
15:14and Ipswich drew with him
15:16and Ipswich probably
15:17could have won it
15:17near the end
15:18and I bet you're thinking
15:19this is tough
15:20and I know people
15:21do their homework
15:22and these coaches
15:22and staff
15:23and obviously players
15:23do their homework
15:24before they go to a club
15:25but I think he's gone in there
15:27and I think he's been shocked
15:29at how bad
15:30this group of players are.
15:32But how is there
15:33that gap between
15:34what the analysts
15:35will have done
15:36from his side
15:37and from Manchester United
15:38the only thing I'd say
15:40I still think
15:41you don't know
15:41a group of players
15:42or their qualities
15:43until you actually
15:43get in the door
15:44and start working with them.
15:45Of course you're on the outside
15:46looking in
15:46you do your little bit
15:47of homework
15:48of course you do.
15:49You look at players
15:49and you'll have a bit
15:50of pride and ego
15:51to think I can improve
15:52these players
15:52I can make them better
15:53that's a manager's job
15:55and they've brought in
15:55some players
15:56but I think over the last
15:57couple of years
15:58and before
15:59obviously this manager
16:00came in
16:00I'm not putting it all
16:01on him
16:01a lot of the recruitment
16:02was bringing players in
16:03who've never played
16:04in the Premier League
16:05and I think it seems
16:06to have cut a lot of them out
16:06they can't seem to cope
16:07with the demands
16:08the physical side of the game
16:10the lack of goals
16:12is a huge problem
16:12for Man United
16:13because usually you look
16:14at Man United
16:14over the years
16:15and think
16:15well there'll be
16:16some sort of entertainment
16:17they'll score goals
16:18they'll get at him
16:18but with 15-20 minutes
16:20to go
16:20this game is over
16:21United fans must be
16:22looking scratching their heads
16:22going
16:23this game is over
16:24there's no way
16:24we're getting back in this
16:25we've only scored
16:26one goal
16:26we don't score on Mane
16:27if anything was going
16:28how many you concede
16:29and then we took
16:30the players decision making
16:31we have a goalkeeper
16:32coming in today
16:33it's difficult to get up
16:34to speed for a goalkeeper
16:35particularly making saves
16:37but in terms of playing out
16:37from the back
16:39and taking chances
16:40that's just madness
16:42that's just common sense
16:43that's just
16:44your football knowledge
16:46why take a chance
16:47at Newcastle
16:47when you're under the cosh
16:48you're trying to chip
16:50balls into the middle
16:50of the park
16:51that's where you have
16:52to look at the players
16:52and go
16:52look lads
16:53give us a bit of a chance
16:54and as I said
16:55there's nothing wrong
16:56with losing football matches
16:57the great teams lose
16:58football matches
16:59but sometimes
17:00it's the way you lose it
17:01and that second half
17:01particularly from United
17:02nowhere near good enough
17:04it's easy for managers
17:05to say let's focus on
17:05Thursday
17:06now you have to look at today
17:07this group of players
17:08bit of fight
17:09bit of spirit
17:10they're lacking in quality
17:12they're lacking pace
17:12they're lacking power
17:13but my goodness
17:14show some fight
17:15they didn't do that enough
17:16in the second half
17:17just to pick up on the point
17:19that you're making
17:19about the players
17:20because when Amorim came in
17:22he came in with a great reputation
17:23of not just dealing with
17:24young players
17:25and developing them
17:26but also of
17:26kind of
17:27older players
17:28where he was reinventing them
17:30or giving them
17:30a new lease of life
17:31and he was
17:32widely praised
17:33for his tactical prowess
17:35there was a lot said
17:35about the system
17:36that he wanted to play
17:37and questions asked
17:38as to whether Man United
17:38players would be able
17:39to do that
17:40if he's not getting
17:42the message across
17:43does that say something
17:44about the players' ability
17:45to take on instruction
17:47a bit of board
17:48I think
17:48there's not known
17:49with a manager having
17:50his set ways
17:51and his philosophy
17:53but I played on some managers
17:54but also you have to adapt
17:55if you're working
17:56with a group of players
17:57and you're constantly
17:59losing football matches
18:00I know he's hanging his hat
18:01on Thursday's game
18:02against Lyon
18:02and he's thinking
18:03that might get him out of jail
18:05really for the club
18:05getting into the Champions League
18:06but if you're losing
18:07week in week out
18:08or losing 14 league matches
18:09and there's still a few to go
18:10you must sit with your staff
18:12and say to yourself
18:12listen it's well and good
18:14again having your mindset
18:15but someone must say
18:16but can we tweak it
18:17can we change it a little bit
18:18because if you keep getting beaten
18:19and again it's on the back of last season
18:21obviously that's not all
18:22in this manager
18:22then something's wrong
18:24the players can't cope with it
18:25there's players playing
18:26for Man United today
18:27I go back to Ericsson
18:29United's midfield
18:30they're not mobile
18:31they can't go around the pitch
18:32Newcastle's midfield
18:34was more powerful
18:35they were stronger
18:36they were getting stronger
18:37as the game was going on
18:38but Ericsson
18:39should have left Man United
18:40maybe one or two
18:41United's still going back
18:42to the players
18:43who I think are a major problem
18:44are these good players?
18:45I think some of them are
18:46but are they good enough
18:47for Man United?
18:48absolutely not
18:49and sometimes actually
18:50that's not on the players
18:51that's on the club
18:52for throwing them in there
18:53you're throwing young lads in today
18:54you're bringing Shaw back
18:55into the group
18:56and you're hoping
18:56one or two of these
18:57senior players will help
18:58but the signs are
19:00again I go back
19:00we done the game last week
19:01my eyes don't lie to me
19:02I'd love to be sitting here
19:04watching Man United
19:04win a two or three
19:05and I go
19:05listen I love everything about them
19:06they've got pace
19:07they've got power
19:08they've got quality
19:09they've got characters
19:10they've got an outstanding goalkeeper
19:12their spine is fantastic
19:13amazing bench
19:14United have none of that
19:16almost the opposite
19:18to what Newcastle had today
19:19that's so fair
19:20they're offered
19:21one of their senior players
19:23that you've looked to
19:24for leadership
19:25at Manchester United
19:26Brinna for now
19:27I ask you though
19:30is Eddie aware
19:32of the result
19:32and has there been
19:33any reaction from him
19:34from that
19:35and the team's performance today?
19:37yeah there is
19:37I just see a message from him
19:40before I come to do the press
19:42congratulating the performance
19:44from everybody
19:45and from the team
19:46he was able to watch it
19:47and I'm sure that would have
19:48lifted his spirits
19:49we did touch on it
19:51before the game
19:51about whether he could have
19:52any input
19:53and I appreciate you
19:53probably had to be guarded
19:54but are you able to
19:55let us into any secrets
19:57did he send any text
19:58during the game to anybody
19:59to send any words
20:00of encouragement
20:01tactically or otherwise?
20:04no he
20:04you know he
20:06sort of trusted
20:08the decisions
20:09that we would make
20:10we've been working together
20:12for a long time
20:13and
20:15you know
20:16we was able to
20:17communicate
20:18sort of earlier on
20:19in the week
20:19and
20:21you know
20:21I think he put his trust
20:22in everybody
20:23to go out there
20:24and deliver a performance
20:25that he'll be proud of
20:27and you know
20:27the lead certainly delivered that
20:28if ever a pick up
20:30was needed
20:31that was certainly it
20:32you've touched on there
20:34the performance today
20:35how good was the performance
20:36particularly in the second half
20:38and what did you say
20:39at half time?
20:41we had to make a couple
20:42of changes at half time
20:44just a couple of tweaks
20:45felt we was probably
20:46a few yards off
20:48on our press
20:49certainly in the attacking half
20:50and we needed to close
20:51them gaps
20:51to be able to have
20:53more regains
20:54in the attacking half
20:55and the lads went out there
20:56and delivered that excellently
20:57and we felt that
20:59we could hurt them
20:59in an area
21:01the opposite side
21:04of the pitch
21:05and again
21:06the lads went out there
21:07and delivered
21:08the tactical executions
21:09superbly well
21:10people always
21:11associate the word
21:12entertainment
21:13with this club
21:14was there a certain
21:15swagger
21:15about some of the goals
21:17this afternoon?
21:19we certainly like
21:20to entertain
21:21you know
21:22we certainly like
21:23to press
21:24aggressively
21:25and to try and
21:26create chances
21:26and score goals
21:27and we've seen it
21:28time and time again
21:29here at St James' Park
21:30you know
21:30the crowd makes
21:31such a difference
21:32for us
21:32they was right
21:33behind us today
21:34the players went out
21:35and delivered a performance
21:36that everybody
21:36would be proud of
21:37you're up into
21:38the top four
21:39you win on Wednesday
21:40you go third
21:42how good a position
21:43have you put
21:44yourselves in
21:45and also
21:46you were out there
21:47leading from the front
21:48do you know yet
21:49whether that will
21:49still be the case
21:50come Wednesday?
21:51I'm not sure
21:51whether that will be
21:52the case
21:52come Wednesday
21:54obviously
21:55you know
21:56we'll be guided
21:56to how the manager's
21:58feeling
21:58the most important
21:58thing is
21:59his health
22:00and making sure
22:00that when he comes
22:01back he's fit
22:02and ready
22:02to go
22:04we've got ourselves
22:05into a fantastic
22:06position
22:06you know
22:07at the start of the season
22:08you obviously want to
22:08try and finish
22:09as high as possible
22:10we know that
22:12you know
22:12at the money end
22:13of the season
22:13now we've seven games
22:14to go
22:14every game's a cup
22:15final for us
22:16and our aim
22:17is one game at a time
22:18and to go out there
22:19prepare right
22:20for each and every game
22:21and go out there
22:22and deliver the performance
22:23that we delivered today
22:25and if we can manage
22:26to do that
22:26hopefully that will be
22:27enough for the
22:28Champions League spots
22:29Just very finally
22:3094 years since
22:31Newcastle lusted
22:32the league double
22:33over Manchester United
22:34is it a measure
22:35of where you are
22:37as a club
22:38and how much
22:38you've progressed
22:39in recent times?
22:41I think it is
22:42it's been a fantastic
22:43journey that we've been
22:44on as a football club
22:45obviously we achieved
22:47the first bit of silverware
22:49for such a long time
22:50against Liverpool
22:50and we're hungry
22:51for success
22:52but the most important
22:53thing is that we
22:54stay grounded
22:54we keep working
22:56extremely hard
22:56every single day
22:57take each game
22:58game by game
22:59and you know
22:59hopefully there'll be
23:00much more success
23:01to come
23:01Well well done to you all
23:02and as we said
23:03before the game
23:03when you see Eddie
23:04please give him
23:05our best from everybody
23:05I will do
23:06thanks very much
23:07Yeah of course
23:09we wish Eddie Howe
23:10all the very best
23:11in his recovery
23:12and we don't know yet
23:13if he's going to be
23:14well enough to take
23:14charge for the game
23:15on Wednesday
23:16but it was such a good
23:17performance from Newcastle
23:19even in the first half
23:20which ended
23:20I'm quick to defend
23:21goalkeepers when they
23:22first come into the team
23:23because I think it does
23:24take five, six, seven
23:25games to get up to speed
23:26with the shots
23:27whatever
23:28but that basic mistake
23:29there is just
23:30honestly I can't
23:32understand it
23:32because this is
23:34top level
23:35this is big boy stuff
23:36you're up at Newcastle
23:37Newcastle are flying
23:38you do your own homework
23:39on who you're playing
23:39against them
23:40when they're pressing you
23:41and they say
23:41and if he's going to
23:42if you're going to go
23:43long or you're going to
23:44chip in
23:44make sure you go too far
23:46so then at least
23:47it's up the pitch
23:47you can argue after us
23:48but if you lose it
23:49there you know
23:49what's going to happen
23:50if you lose it
23:51someone's in on goal
23:52on top of you
23:53that's just
23:54common sense
23:55it's typical of what
23:56we're watching nowadays
23:57in terms of goalkeepers
23:58trying to be precise
23:59trying to be clever
24:00trying to
24:00you know you just put
24:01your foot through that
24:02and say like
24:03we're 3-1 down
24:04let's not go 4-1 down
24:06by making a silly mistake
24:08but he doesn't
24:08he just tries to
24:09clip a little dinky ball
24:11into the centre forward
24:12and I'm just thinking
24:13what are you doing
24:14what are you doing
24:15really good day
24:16at the office though
24:16for Newcastle
24:17who move into 4th place
24:19they put themselves
24:19in a really good position
24:20to qualify for the
24:21Champions League
24:22next season
24:23but real disappointment
24:24from Manchester United
24:25we talked about
24:26some of those senior players
24:27Bruno Fernandes
24:28has been really strong
24:29on this
24:30we'll hear from him next
24:38a number of times
24:40you've come out
24:40to face me
24:41and my colleagues
24:42and there has been
24:42criticism
24:43after results
24:44like this
24:45once again
24:46the criticism
24:47will come
24:47questions will be asked
24:48about players commitment
24:50whether you run enough
24:51whether you want it enough
24:52is that warranted
24:54at times
24:54or is it unfair Bruno
24:56no it's the
24:57it's the opinion
24:58of the
24:59of other people
24:59I can't make people
25:02have all the same
25:02opinion about
25:03about me
25:04about my players
25:05about my team
25:06and that's it
25:08and I'm not
25:09obviously
25:10we're not stupid
25:11we know the position
25:13we are
25:13it's easy to criticise
25:15because this club
25:16has never been
25:16like this
25:19has never suffered
25:20in the last years
25:21the way we've been
25:21suffering this season
25:22and then
25:23it's normal
25:24you need to be aware
25:24that you play
25:25for Manchester United
25:26you know
25:26the criticism
25:28will be there
25:29you're going to get
25:31some credit
25:31when you do good things
25:32so
25:32you need to find
25:34the balance
25:34of the way
25:35to take it
25:36you've made it clear
25:37that it's huge
25:38on Thursday night
25:40but how huge
25:42in terms of
25:43Manchester United's
25:44history looking forward
25:45how big is Thursday
25:47now for you all
25:48no Thursday is big
25:49to get into the
25:50semi-final
25:50that's why it's big
25:51it's big because
25:52we're going to play
25:53at home
25:53we're going to play
25:54in front of our fans
25:55and being in the
25:56position we are
25:57they're being so
25:58supportive of us
25:59today again
25:59end of the game
26:00they were all there
26:01waiting for us
26:01to try to cheer us up
26:05to try to
26:05make understand
26:06that they will be
26:07there for us
26:07on Thursday
26:08and I'm pretty sure
26:08they will be there
26:09they've been there
26:09all season
26:10through all bad moments
26:12and it's time
26:14for us to understand
26:15that we need to
26:15give something back
26:16and the Europa League
26:17it's a chance
26:17now to get into
26:18the semi-final
26:19this team
26:20will put everything
26:21out
26:22as we always do
26:23even if the results
26:24are not always
26:25in our side
26:25we always do
26:26it could be
26:27that people think
26:28in different way
26:28but we always try
26:29I've seen my teammates
26:30I know sometimes
26:32you've even seen
26:33myself frustrated
26:34on the pitch
26:34and everything
26:34but I get frustrated
26:36because I know
26:37we are much better
26:38than we actually
26:39being
26:39and I think
26:41my teammates
26:42I only get frustrated
26:44with them
26:44because I know
26:45how good they are
26:45I know how good
26:46they can be
26:46I know how much
26:47they can do
26:48and I know
26:49how tough it is
26:50to represent this club
26:51and it's difficult
26:52for everyone
26:52when you are
26:53in these kind of positions
26:54because they want
26:56so much to give
26:56to the club
26:57they want so much
26:58to win with this club
26:59because they know
27:00how much they will
27:00be remembered
27:01if they win something
27:01with this club
27:02so going forward
27:04we play Thursday
27:05we are going to do it
27:06together with our fans
27:07we are going to create
27:07a big atmosphere
27:08in our stadium
27:09we need to be
27:10on the front foot
27:11we need to give
27:12everything we have
27:13because we want
27:13to be in the semi-final
27:14Very quickly and finally
27:16and you have spoken
27:16very well there
27:17you know your teammates
27:19in there better than anybody
27:20you know them professionally
27:20you know them personally
27:22do you believe
27:24that amongst that group
27:25you have the ability
27:26to bounce back
27:27from something like this
27:28and still salvage
27:29something for Manchester United
27:30do you believe
27:32there is the character
27:32within there?
27:33I don't need to believe
27:34I need to see
27:35what we have done
27:36in the past
27:36and in tough moments
27:38we have come out
27:38and doing great performance
27:40again great teams
27:41against the biggest clubs
27:43this season
27:43if you look at our results
27:44against the biggest clubs
27:45probably where we
27:47we play our best football
27:49in decisive games
27:51where everyone is watching
27:52and this is going to be
27:53the one against Lyon
27:55big team in France
27:56big team with a lot of history
27:58in the European competitions
28:00but we are many united
28:01so we have to step up
28:02we have to do everything
28:03we can to win the game
28:04and I'm pretty sure
28:05that my teammates
28:05and myself
28:06together with all the staff
28:08together with all the fans
28:09and the club
28:10will be together
28:11to win that game
28:11Bruno I think you've just
28:12demonstrated why you're the captain
28:14well done thank you
28:14thank you very much
28:15thank you
28:15thank you very much
28:16Roy do you have sympathy
28:18with the captain
28:19having to come out
28:20so many times this season
28:22and in previous seasons
28:23not just under Ruben Amorim
28:24and make excuses
28:27for the performance
28:28yeah it's not easy
28:29to be fair to Bruno
28:29he does front up
28:30and he does come out
28:31and obviously the club
28:32push him out
28:32because he's the best player
28:33and he's the captain
28:34of course it's important
28:35what he says
28:36but to me it's
28:37it's kind of just sound bites
28:38now from him
28:39let's hope they win
28:42on Thursday by the way
28:43my goodness
28:44that's all they're talking about
28:45Thursday
28:45listen Leon
28:47I think Leon is 6th
28:49in the French league
28:49so I'd fully expect
28:50Man United to beat Leon
28:51at home on a Thursday
28:52but yeah
28:54he's talking about his teammates
28:55there in belief
28:56but what about his right back
28:57who didn't put a leg out
28:58or try and tackle
28:59for the goal dialogue
29:00I hope he's pulling him
29:02in the dressing room
29:02because he keeps talking
29:03about yeah I have belief
29:04in the players
29:04and my teammates
29:06a real good teammate
29:08puts demands on each other
29:09whether that's out in the pitch
29:11or in the dressing room
29:11or on the training ground
29:12during the week
29:13I suppose it's called
29:14the culture at your football club
29:16so when I listen to Bruno
29:18now when I've been harsh
29:19on Bruno
29:19an amazing player
29:21but I still have question marks
29:22about his leadership
29:22even when I'm watching him
29:23there in the bigger picture
29:24and he's
29:25he's doing his usual stuff
29:26but he's certainly not getting
29:28any help around him
29:29you know
29:29it must be tough playing
29:30in that midfield
29:31when he's
29:31the expectation on him
29:33is to turn up week in
29:34week out
29:34and obviously that's unfair on him
29:36because when you're playing
29:37for a big club
29:38like Man United
29:38you need help in hand
29:40but now when he's doing
29:41the chats about the supporters
29:43and all this
29:43again to me it's just
29:45sound bites
29:47there's not even meaning to it
29:49because I don't know
29:50how we can listen
29:51to the United players
29:52doing interviews anymore
29:53because
29:53I'm not sure
29:55they're an honest group
29:56so why should we listen to
29:58I don't think we're going to get
29:58real honesty
29:59from this group of players
30:00when we're not seeing it
30:02week in week out
30:03Bruno's mentioned
30:04it's always interesting
30:05when you're playing
30:06for a big club
30:06they talk about
30:07they have turned up
30:08in certain games
30:09but as if they pick
30:11and choose their games
30:11Kelly
30:12as if they pick
30:13and choose the games
30:13oh it's Man City
30:14or it's Liverpool
30:15your mindset
30:17playing for Man United
30:17should be
30:18every game's a big game
30:19so today wasn't a big game
30:21is that the attitude
30:21of some of them
30:22but Torres is a big game
30:23I think you're in trouble
30:24if you start picking
30:25and choosing
30:25what you think is a big game
30:26your whole attitude
30:28should be
30:28again when you're playing
30:29for Man United
30:30every game is a big game
30:33and you go out
30:34and give it your all
30:34and the second half
30:35for certainly a spell
30:37in this game
30:37Man United
30:38when they were giving
30:38the ball away cheaply
30:39and people not making
30:40tackles
30:40and making demands
30:43on each other
30:43and again we're here
30:44we're at the game live
30:45so we can see the bigger
30:46picture
30:46sometimes you don't see
30:47it on the television
30:47and people not
30:49covering for each other
30:50people not putting
30:51demands on each other
30:51the best players
30:52I played with
30:53put demands on me
30:54and they wouldn't
30:55tolerate me
30:56cutting corners
30:57and as you become
30:58a player and you play
30:5850, 100, 200 games
31:00then you put them
31:01demands on other people
31:02that's what really good
31:03teammates do
31:03they don't let you
31:04away with it
31:05they're not teammates
31:06they're bluffers
31:07and this group again
31:08they lost 14 league games
31:09this season
31:10they've lost 14 last year
31:11everyone can have
31:12a difficult spell
31:13so what do we expect
31:15when the players
31:15come out and chat
31:16after games
31:16they've got
31:17their media trained
31:18they'll be told
31:19stuff to say
31:20they'll talk about
31:21the pundits
31:22or ex-players
31:23we're here to give
31:24an opinion
31:24but I'd love to be
31:25sitting there
31:25Man United
31:25when the training
31:26you go
31:26hey it's great to watch
31:27everything you want
31:28to see in a team
31:29but I don't see it
31:30with this group of players
31:31and I've seen it
31:31too many times now
31:32too many times
31:33for it to be a bit unlucky
31:35or you can have a difficult spell
31:36this has been going on
31:37for a few years now
31:38but what's got a lot of trouble
31:39over the last few years
31:40obviously the cup runs
31:40they've had some good cup runs
31:42but going on cup runs
31:44is like Man United
31:44from the 80s
31:45you don't want to be a cup run
31:46you want to be a cup team
31:48you want to turn up week in week out
31:49and compete for the big prizes
31:50and still try and win cups
31:52obviously
31:53but your bread and butter
31:54I can repeat myself all the time
31:56your bread and butter
31:57is what you do day and day
31:57or at your football club
31:58and whatever these players
32:00and the manager and the coaches
32:01are doing at the training ground
32:03day in day
32:03isn't enough
32:04because we're not seeing it out there
32:05we saw Newcastle
32:06they were at it
32:07they look full of energy
32:08all we heard before the game
32:09was about resting players
32:10and the manager
32:11brood off the ton
32:13about next Thursday
32:14what about today's match
32:15does that mean anything
32:16to anybody
32:16because what's the point
32:17in us turning up here
32:18Les raised the question earlier
32:21is
32:21what changes do they make
32:23for the game
32:24against Lyon
32:24in terms of the personnel
32:25that mean that they're going to look
32:27better than they did against Newcastle
32:29Anana comes in in goal
32:31no no maybe Casemiro
32:32maybe Maguire
32:33he's one of two players
32:34but they're not
32:34it's not Ronaldo and Rooney
32:36coming back into the team
32:37and I mean Ronaldo and Rooney
32:38in their prime
32:39not now
32:40so that's the strange bit about it
32:42you're thinking
32:43have I missed somebody
32:44who's waiting to come into the team
32:45that you're going
32:45hey he's world class
32:47or he's going to be the difference
32:48I know there's some experience
32:49to come into the team
32:50and United are home on a Thursday night
32:51to Lyon
32:52I expect Man United to win that game
32:54I wouldn't be sitting back
32:55hey listen
32:56we've got Lyon at home
32:57we've got Lyon at home
32:57yeah and we roll our sleeves up
32:58and we'll take care of them
33:00again Lyon at 6th in the French League
33:01United made a couple of mistakes
33:03to the other night
33:03they were a wonder game
33:04so just to dismiss today's match
33:06I don't think it's a
33:08I don't think it's good
33:10that's my opinion
33:11is there a possibility
33:13of prioritising
33:14Les
33:15that allows Manchester United
33:16to keep a certain level
33:18of momentum
33:19of psychological momentum
33:21as much as anything
33:22or do you think it
33:22and sorry conversely
33:24do you think it's damaging
33:25to go into the game
33:26against Lyon
33:26off the back of a 4-1 defeat
33:28that's what
33:28that's what I was
33:29going to talk about
33:30the fact that you've lost 4-1
33:32and the manner in which
33:33you've lost 4-1
33:33you know you can lose a game
33:35and go look
33:35we was unlucky
33:36you know
33:37yeah now let's look at
33:38let's look at Thursday
33:39and I know that's all
33:40they've been talking about
33:40let's look at Thursday
33:41look at Thursday
33:42but the momentum
33:43you've got no momentum
33:44going into Thursday
33:45you've thrown all your eggs
33:46into one basket
33:47and that's the only basket
33:48you've got
33:48so you have to throw your eggs
33:49into that basket
33:50but I just
33:52can't like sit here
33:53and I think to myself
33:54it's not a tap
33:56if you play like that
33:57you can't turn it on
33:58and turn it off
33:59and say right
33:59do you know what
34:00we're going to be a different
34:01Man United on Thursday
34:02I don't see it happening
34:03I just see
34:04you're going into
34:05after a performance like that
34:07I don't know what level
34:08you think you're going to get to
34:10to play on Thursday
34:11you're talking about
34:12you know Lyon's sixth
34:13in the division
34:14but they'll be coming
34:15to Manchester United
34:15thinking
34:16seeing this tonight
34:17and thinking
34:18we've got a chance
34:18of beating Man United
34:20so I ain't coming
34:20to Old Trafford
34:22thinking
34:22do you know what
34:23we've got no chance
34:23of winning here
34:24they'll believe
34:25they can beat Manchester United
34:26looking at that performance today
34:27you said you don't think
34:28as a group
34:29they have a strong mentality
34:30how do they even
34:31set about switching that
34:33and changing the mentality
34:35I don't know
34:36I think what does help
34:37if you start getting
34:38some sort of results
34:39you dig in
34:39when you're up against it
34:40get some sort of
34:41spirit in the group
34:43I don't want to use
34:46the dreaded word
34:47recruitment
34:47do they get players
34:48in this summer
34:49again lads who are robust
34:51who know the league
34:52because again
34:53the majority
34:54the percentage of players
34:55they've brought in
34:56over the last year
34:56aren't used to the Premier League
34:58and I think it's cut a lot
34:59of them out
34:59I think you have to get
35:01some players who are used
35:01to the Premier League
35:02who've played one of 200 games
35:03and there as well
35:05how much can they spend
35:06in the summer
35:07you know
35:08because what you're
35:09going to lose
35:09what you're going to sell
35:11because we're talking
35:12about PSR
35:12we're talking about
35:13financial fair play
35:14what can they spend
35:15in the summer
35:16so you can have
35:17a group of players
35:18and say right
35:18these group of players
35:19ain't right for me
35:20I need you
35:21but you ain't going
35:22to be replacing
35:2211 players
35:23in that squad
35:25you're not going
35:26to be able to do that
35:26because you ain't going
35:27to have the money
35:27to do that
35:28and even the recruitment
35:30side of it
35:30we're talking about getting
35:31you obviously hope
35:32you're getting quality
35:33players into United
35:33the money they've spent
35:34but getting it to
35:35the right characters
35:37we hear about clubs
35:38recently they have recruitment
35:39and Liverpool look at it
35:40and Brentford
35:40and it's about the character
35:42and it's about the
35:42Bournemouth
35:43recruitment
35:43they've got to
35:44obviously they've got to be
35:44able to play
35:45and play at the highest level
35:46but
35:46this group
35:49don't show that
35:50they're not robust
35:51they don't kind of
35:52roll their sleeves up
35:53and dig up results
35:54I don't see
35:55every now and again
35:55we do
35:55sorry
35:56we do
35:56and they'll pick up
35:57a good result
35:57like they did at City
35:58and they get a draw
36:00at Liverpool
36:00but then all the teams
36:01recently go to Old Trafford
36:02every team's getting
36:03a bit of joy
36:03because there's no
36:05even in Newcastle
36:06in the second half
36:06there's just gaps
36:07everywhere
36:08they're running through
36:08United
36:09United don't even look
36:10big and strong
36:11you look at certain
36:14teams at Premiership
36:15and you hang your hat
36:15on certain things
36:16you go well
36:16they're big and strong
36:17or they're technically
36:18brilliant
36:18or you look at Liverpool
36:19they tick a lot of boxes
36:20but you look at United
36:21going
36:21what would you hang your hat
36:23and what would you say
36:23they're really
36:24really good at
36:25they've not got
36:29a world class striker
36:30they haven't got
36:30a strong spine
36:31they're not athletic
36:32and I keep saying
36:33I'm not sure
36:34what they're kind of good at
36:35they're not really good
36:37at anything
36:37they've got some
36:38half decent players
36:39but again
36:40what's to say
36:41in the league
36:42the table doesn't lie
36:43we look at United
36:44at the table
36:44but forget about the table
36:47it's all about Thursday
36:48good luck on Thursday
36:50big game to come
36:51for Manchester United
36:52on Thursday
36:53against Lyon
36:54there's another
36:54Premier League game
36:55to go this weekend
36:56as well
36:57the Monday night football
36:58coverage of course
36:59gets underway
36:59as always
37:00at 6.30
37:01ahead of an 8 o'clock
37:01kick-off
37:02between Bournemouth
37:03and Fulham
37:04and then Wednesday
37:05that's Newcastle's
37:06game in hand
37:07it's against Crystal Palace
37:08build up from 7 o'clock
37:10ahead of a 7.30
37:11kick-off
37:11also
