00:00Today the Department of Justice is announcing a civil lawsuit against the
00:04Maine Department of Education. The state of Maine is discriminating against
00:10women by failing to protect women in women's sports. Pretty basic stuff. This
00:16is a violation of Title IX. The Department of Justice will not sit by
00:21when women are discriminated against in sports. This is about sports. This is also
00:28about these young women's personal safety. I met many of these women
00:34throughout the past weeks and months and what they have been through is horrific.
00:39We have exhausted every other remedy. We tried to get Maine to comply. We don't
00:48like standing up here and filing lawsuits. We want to get states to comply with us.
00:53That's what this is about. We have repeatedly notified Maine of its
00:58infractions and urged them to remedy the situation to protect women. We've
01:04stripped grants from Maine
01:08through other departments and we are going to continue to fight for women.
01:15What we are seeking? We are seeking an injunction to get them to stop this, stop
01:23what they're doing. That's pretty simple. And we are seeking to have the titles
01:30returned to the young women who rightfully won these sports. And we are also
01:37considering whether to retroactively pull all the funding that they have
01:43received for not complying in the past.
