Former SNP MP Joanna Cherry has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on the legal definition of a woman, describing it as a key moment in the debate over sex-based rights. She said the judgment vindicates long-standing concerns but warned that it must now be properly implemented. Cherry urged political leaders to ensure the ruling is respected and reflected in everyday policy. Report by Covellm. 00:00In order for women to be properly protected by the law, we need to know what a woman is.
00:06And the Supreme Court have said that a woman is a biological woman.
00:10In order for lesbian rights, our rights as same-sex attracted women, to be protected by the law,
00:16we need to be able to say that women are biological women, not men who say that they are women.
00:22And now the law, that has been clarified, and it is the job now of everyone across the United Kingdom
00:28to make sure that they are obeying the law.
00:30And I'm calling on political leaders such as my former colleague John Swinney, the First Minister of Scotland,
00:35and the Prime Minister Keir Starmer across the road there.
00:38When both these parliaments reconvene, public statements need to be made by each government
00:43acknowledging this decision and undertaking to reform policy across the public sector
00:49so we have no more men in women's toilets, no more men changing in women's changing rooms,
00:55and no more men LARPing as lesbians in lesbian-only spaces.
00:59It is often said that this case is about rolling back trans rights.
01:04That's wrong, and people who are saying that are being irresponsible.
01:08As the court, we're at pains to emphasise trans people are fully protected, as they should be,
01:14against harassment and discrimination under the Equality Act as trans people.
01:19What they do not have a right to do is to self-identify as women.
