00:00A new German study has revealed that guaranteed income does not, in fact, make people more lazy
00:04or spark an increase in quitting full-time work. Receiving this income actually does quite the
00:09opposite. A Berlin-based non-profit followed 122 people over three years. From 2021 to 2024,
00:19this group received an unconditional sum of $1,365 USD per month, whilst a control group did not.
00:26Over the trial, both groups filled out questionnaires about different areas of their lives.
00:32You might expect a guaranteed income would make people less inclined to work, but that
00:36couldn't be farther from the truth. On average, study participants continued to work 40 hours a
00:41week and stayed in employment, but were also more likely to change jobs or enroll in further education.
00:48They reported feeling that their lives were more valuable and meaningful, and felt clear
00:52improvements in their mental health. Suzanne Fiedler, a professor at the Vienna University
00:59of Economics and Business, says,
