00:30Holy monkey bladders, it's Monkey Island!
00:37Back in the day when adventure games were really in their prime,
00:40they were mostly fantasy games or RPGs and Monkey Island took a different approach.
00:45I just wanted to create something the market's going to like and it's going to sell a lot of copies,
00:48but I did not want to do fantasy and that's when I kind of hit on pirates.
00:52X marks the spot!
00:55Monkey Island is about a guy named Guybrush and he travels deep in the Caribbean.
00:59It's this place called Melee Island.
01:01We don't know where he came from, we don't know how he got there, he just kind of appears.
01:05Hi, my name's Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate.
01:09That tells you everything you need to know about that character.
01:11What did you say your name was again?
01:14Guybrush Nosehead.
01:16Throomwade.
01:17Thriftwade.
01:18Spicecake.
01:19Call me Squinky.
01:20There's the three trials that he has to undergo.
01:24Swordplay, divary and a treasure hunterie.
01:30There's a little love story going on.
01:32Let's go to your place.
01:33Finish your trials first.
01:35I don't want you to be preoccupied.
01:38I feel this sudden urge to complete the trials.
01:41The Secret Monkey Island.
01:43It was probably the first game that I played that made me laugh out loud.
01:47Say hello, Roger.
01:49Hello, Roger.
01:51That alone made it a completely unique experience from anything else.
01:56Whoops.
01:57The reason why adventure games flourished for so many years is largely due to Monkey Island.
02:03Right, I'm off.
02:04Good luck.
02:05Be sure to wear your mittens and don't forget to write.
02:07The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is a faithfully reimagined version of the classic 1990 PC game.
02:16You just don't know when to quit, do you?
02:19The biggest challenge in recreating the game was convincing people it was a good idea.
02:23It's nearly 20 years old.
02:24It was 256 colors.
02:26When we were doing things, Monkey Island, I think, at its height, was like five people working on the thing.
02:31We didn't have storyboards that had to be built and a whole CGI machine had to get geared up.
02:35It was a lot easier to come up with something funny and then just run back to our desks and program it in.
02:42It works!
02:43Oh, I'm so relieved.
02:47We took a look at all of the art, all of the characters, and we said, how do we bring this back to a new audience?
02:53Okay, maggot.
02:54Whip that sword out and let's see what you can do with it.
02:57Our first start was to take this 8-bit medium and faithfully re-envision the sets and live up to what the fans would expect.
03:06It's all becoming clear.
03:07I really wanted that classical animation feel, so we went in there and hand-painted over 100 layouts.
03:14Over a 10 or 11 year span, the character really evolved.
03:17I really wanted to develop the character of Guybrush.
03:20We did quite a few development sketches of him in different ways, one of them being with a captain's jacket.
03:26We even did some sketches of him with a beard.
03:29Said, hey, what would Guybrush look like as an old man?
03:31Hey, it's your loss, baby.
03:33Yeah, right.
03:36We went back and looked at the audio and the special effects and the music.
03:40I can see we've got a lot of work to do here.
03:42I was taking these old bleeps and bloops, and then I had to re-record everything for a current generation,
03:50as well as be faithful to fans of the game from 20 years ago.
03:55One of the big things was to make sure that there were as many live players as possible.
04:01Wow, this is sounding better and better all the time.
04:04This is Dominic Armato as Guybrush Threepwood, take 452.
04:07We've gone back and for the first time added brand new recorded dialogue with the original cast from The Curse of Monkey Island.
04:15We immediately knew that we wanted Dominic Armato back as Guybrush.
04:18Hi, my name is Guybrush Threepwood, and I want to be a pirate.
04:22Dominic can best be described as the ultimate Monkey Island fanboy.
04:26You keep hoping after a while, you hope, oh, the next one's going to come.
04:29I can't wait to do the next one.
04:30And after about six or seven years, it's like, okay, I'm just, I've given up all hope.
04:35It's never coming back, and then get the email one day.
04:38It's like, hey, give me a call.
04:39Something's going on.
04:40It's like, yes, it's coming back.
04:42Worf, aruf, lechuk.
04:45Great, we got it.
04:46He knows every little detail and pretty much knew all the dialogue just because he loves it so much.
04:50You see what I'm saying?
04:51It's because he knows the game so well.
04:53He just knows what's going on and he just nails it.
04:55Is that a banana in your pocket or are you just glad to see us?
04:59The game started with a point-and-click interface with the mouse and making it something that people could play on a controller was the biggest challenge.
05:08The interface filled almost half of the screen, so we removed that and put it in the background so it would work well on any platform.
05:14We just couldn't say no to anything.
05:16Like, if it's cool and the game deserves it, we just, like, it's got to go in.
05:19I'm going to put you up against the machine.
05:22Yikes.
05:23Back in the day, we'd play the game until we got stuck and obviously there was no internet to help us along.
05:28Gee, I don't know how much longer I can hold my breath.
05:30We didn't want people to have to break the experience, so we created a hand system integrated directly into the game.
05:35Well, that wasn't so hard.
05:38The most significant feature is the ability to press a button.
05:42No, not the red button!
05:43And switch seamlessly from the new version to the original version.
05:47I have love for the bricky pixels.
05:49You can jump back and forth and it's pretty cool.
05:50We built our game on top of that original code.
05:54Don't touch anything!
05:55It is identical to the classic version of the game that we released.
05:59I never get tired of this view, even if I have been looking at it for 20 years now.
06:05The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is a gateway to so much of the history of gaming.
06:10This is the game that made me want to be a game designer.
06:13When I joined Luca, it was always in the back of my mind that this is the company that made the game that I loved since my childhood.
06:18It's a fresh new face on this fantastic classic and I'm jazzed, man.
06:21I can't wait to get my hands on it.
06:22I was like totally blown away by how completely pure it has remained to the original game.
06:27You're supposed to open that little door if you've got the guts.
06:31I think this will give a lot of people a great opportunity to experience that.
06:38I don't believe it!
06:41You face the beast I've feared all these years!
06:45You are a brave man after all!
06:48I found the treasure of Melee Island and all I got was this stupid t-shirt.
06:56Oh, Guybrush!
07:01What did you do?
