00:00A serene and solemn Lenten Tuesday evening to all. Denise Osorio here, homegrown and pleased to bring you PTV News Now.
00:11Talks on our stories at this hour.
00:14The Department of Migrant Workers has reached out to the bereaved family and kin of the two slain Filipino migrant workers
00:20who lost their lives in the 7.7 magnitude killer quake that hit Myanmar and close neighbors on March 28.
00:28Migrant Workers Big Boss Hans Leo Kakdak paid the bereaved families and their relatives and friends a visit
00:34of late to extend the President and his entire government's deep sympathies and financial support.
00:40He told the grieving families the government is working hard to have the remains of the two deceased shipped back to the country post-haste.
00:47Besides financial or monetary assistance, post-arrival support has also been assured once the shipping and handling of the remains are complete or finished.
00:55For migrant Filipino quick survivors in Myanmar, the government also promised them financial or monetary aid
01:02by way of the Department's Action Fund.
01:05As of press time, the official casualty count in Myanmar has climbed to 3,645 along with more than 5,000 injured
01:13and 148 still missing or unaccounted for up to now.
01:18Personal remittances hit $3.02 billion in February thanks to increased payouts
01:26from land-based and sea-based Filipino migrant workers, up 2.6% from the same period last year.
01:34Likewise, cumulative remittances also went up by 2.7% from $6.1 billion reached in January to February 24
01:42to $6.27 billion in February this year.
01:50U.S. President Donald Trump has made himself unmistakably clear.
01:54He will roll back or deep-six all his predecessors' programs on green and sustainable energy and EV manufacturing
02:01so he could revive or resurrect the fossil fuel industry and drill, baby, drill.
02:05At the recent 2025 Chicago Auto Show, the latest electric vehicle offerings that made their debut
02:11probably had took front and center for their swan song.
02:15VOA's Cain Farable has more.
02:18It sounds like an engine, and it might feel like an engine.
02:25But what propels the new Dodge Charger isn't an internal combustion engine at all.
02:31It's a fully electric vehicle, or EV.
02:35And while the sounds and smell of tires burning rubber are real,
02:41the hallmarks of a throaty exhaust are artificial.
02:48I think you will forget that it's an EV.
02:50Ryan Nogoti is vice president for interior design at Stellantis, which owns the Dodge brand.
02:56The Charger has long been an icon of the gasoline-powered American muscle car era.
03:01Nogoti says turning it into an EV, with certain models exceeding $60,000, was a leap of faith for Dodge.
03:09We know that that's where, you know, the country's heading, you know, and it takes time.
03:14A tax credit of up to $7,500, part of the Biden administration's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act,
03:20helped make pricey EVs manufactured in America more affordable.
03:25President Donald Trump has signaled plans to end the credit.
03:29Nogoti says those incentives weren't a major factor in the Charger's EV development.
03:33You're getting a different customer coming to this vehicle, right?
03:37That's not their first and foremost thought.
03:40Even so, incentives helped fuel an EV buying surge last year in the U.S., Cox Automotive reports,
03:47with about 1.3 million new vehicles sold, a 7.3 percent increase over sales in 2023.
03:53Toyota has 19 electrified vehicles, so that includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel cell EV, and electric vehicles.
04:02Matt Troyer is a product specialist with Japanese automaker Toyota.
04:05Almost 30 percent of what we sell is now some kind of electrified vehicle.
04:10None of which qualify for the current federal EV tax credit.
04:14Toyota's only fully electric vehicle in North America, the BZ4X,
04:19also doesn't qualify because it's manufactured outside the United States.
04:23In December, Toyota announced it was cutting the price of its BZ4X by up to $6,000.
04:30We're seeing that electric vehicles are getting cheaper.
04:33Megalactora is the electric vehicle officer for the state of Illinois,
04:36which is continuing a $4,000 state rebate for purchasing a fully electric vehicle.
04:42She joined Melissa Washington, a senior vice president at energy supplier ComEd, at an auto show news conference.
04:48We have $100 million in rebates that are being made available in 2025 for customers to adopt EVs.
04:57And that's going to be for all customers, our residential customers, our commercial customers, and public sector customers.
05:02While uncertainty surrounds the future of federal incentives to buy EVs,
05:07Troyer says customers tell him they're more focused on the other benefits of EV ownership.
05:12Less expensive to drive it, to maintain it too, and they love doing good things for the environment.
05:19Kane Fairbaw, VOA News, Chicago.
05:21At this moment, let's turn to my colleague in PDV's Baguio City Studios for what's brewing of late in the Cordilleras.
