00:00Step into the golden era of cricket, where elegance met courage at the crease.
00:05In the third test match against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, played
00:10between December 11 to 15, 1981, Wasim Raja crafted a masterful 50 runs from 132 balls,
00:17occupying the crease for a patient 164 minutes.
00:20Laced with just four boundaries, his inning was a poetic blend of grit and grace.
00:25His talk spoke of vintage flair and among them were some of the most dazzling shots of
00:30his illustratious career.
00:32Let's relive the magic, watch the rare and unforgettable batting video of Wasim Raja.
00:55Raja now off the mark with a three in.
01:02Raja really stretching there to drive and have the ball turned or curved little, he could
01:10have been in trouble there.
01:11But hit on the rise and she gets three.
01:19The lead to Raja, it's in the air and just lobs over Lili's head.
01:27My goodness, it was very lucky.
01:30So again Raja just misreading the play, pace of that particular delivery and it just lobbed
01:35over Lili's head.
01:37Well, Lili must be questioning his luck here.
01:42When his luck is good, it is very, very good, but when it's bad it's horrid.
01:46All right, let's break through here, Lili bowling now to Wasim Raja.
01:55That's a half push around behind square leg and a full error.
02:00Dirk Wellham, man out there, just a little bit too eager to get in and feel that, have
02:09a throw back to Marsh.
02:10Well, Raja did go for a shot there, but landed ahead of Wellham and then a bit of misfielding.
02:18So he's certainly uncomfortable against Lili and Lili after lunch is his best spell in
02:25this match.
02:27Good shot by Wasim Raja.
02:39And good feeling, chasing and feeling by Jeff Thompson.
02:48That's a beautiful return right from the deep by Thompson.
02:59Strong arm, and there it is, right over the top.
03:07And he's got him away again, down to fine leg, and then this over Raja looking happier.
03:19Five for three seconds.
03:24Yardley to Wasim Raja.
03:29Shot for four.
03:32Well, he launched himself at that one.
03:44Raja's favorite shot, that, square of the wicket.
03:47And he really pumped that one, and he's waiting for that half folly for a long time.
03:54He's beginning now to look more assured, more confident.
04:01Two good shots.
04:12Placement was good.
04:13Hit them with power.
04:18Another lovely shot, the front foot, and beautifully placed through for four.
04:26So Raja now beginning to open out.
04:36Turn.
04:37That was a good delivery.
04:38And Yardley throws his hands back.
04:40And that's not a sign that Greg Chappell would like to see.
04:45A bit of turn there.
04:47Raja playing forward very tentatively.
04:49Good solid edge, but bouncing.
04:52And voting now to Wasim Raja.
04:54Oh, good delivery around the wicket.
05:00Change the line.
05:02Well bowled, this wasn't Raja.
05:05Changing tactics from Terry Alderman going around the wicket for the first time, and that
05:09ball seemed off the wicket.
05:11So fortunate for Alderman that did extract that extra bounce out of the wicket, hitting Raja just on the top of the pad.
05:18Clearly gone over the top of the stumps.
05:19That was an excellent ball from Terry Alderman, and one of the few balls that we've seen move off this pitch.
05:27As well placed as his strength square of the wicket on the offside.
05:36I don't know, Bill, how you can have a bowled or Wasim Raja without a third man.
05:42It's many of his runs down in that area, and it's been a tendency right through this whole innings for Australia not to have a third man.
05:48Wasim Raja just opening the face.
05:50No one down there, and once it was through that gap, it was four runs.
05:55Here's a ball from Terry Alderman, and perhaps that's indicative of what's going to happen on the last three days of this test match.
06:02Oh, that was well taken by Rodney Marsh. You heard Wasim give a roar. It didn't really bounce.
06:12That's typical of the Melbourne wicket.
06:14That was an excellent take by Rodney Marsh.
06:17Always difficult to take when the ball bounces in front of you.
06:20Marsh always has a few problems at this MCG, but Wasim Raja playing right over the top of that one.
06:26With 400 on the board.
06:27Greg Chappell...
06:30...Gardley to Wasim Raja.
06:33That turn, that's a good shot.
06:36Hit with the spin.
06:38And that's the problem, Bill, when you have such an attacking field that you only have to be a fraction off line, fraction off length, and the batsmen are able to get you away.
06:53That wasn't really a bad ball by Bruce Yardley, but Raja, no one out there.
06:58So we'll just nudge it away just through square and brought him three runs.
07:02He's moved on to 35 in the test match.
07:05Laird to Wasim Raja.
07:10Good shot. Finds a gap at cover.
07:13And he'll be over from there. Three runs to Wasim Raja.
07:25Five for 413.
07:27Yardley to Wasim Raja.
07:30Pitched up on leg stump, and Raja flicking it away on the leg side for two.
07:37down the next side in the air and just short of wellham could so easily have carried to wellham
07:49but he managed to stop it on the half volley that's the end of yardley's over five for four
07:53sixteen great chapel bowling to imran that went down the next side and nicely glanced there by
08:01was in roger and border is chasing it down towards fine leg imran settling for two
08:07quite an intelligent piece of bowling then it's called great chapel may have been going
08:13to the lakeside stumping marsh was across there and just a shade too close to the pads of roger
08:21and he's able to get a thick edge to it intelligent ball with great chapel has seen him break through
08:26a lot for australia over the years need more than a breakthrough here at the moment
08:30well that's a nick and just not quite carrying there very well fielded by yardley
08:38goodness he has quick reactions what a great game bruce yardley's having
08:43roger isn't very determined but making one or two mistakes down his wicket he comes and that's just
08:49a little bit lucky going over the top of laird's head and down towards the deep lid on boundary
08:54well a little bit of frustration brought on a pretty ordinary shot and that brings up the roger 50
09:02another pakistan batsman reaching 50
09:09joe with that lock that shot a little lack in that one for him
09:14richardley threw the hands up but it cleared mid on some five or six yards
09:20venting down the wicket didn't hit it all as well as he would have liked
09:24and it wasn't as now reached his 50
09:28i start thinking another 50 after i get first 50 and uh i keep on building my innings right from the
09:36beginning as if i've uh just come into that and i forget about the first 50 i've gone
09:43that's in the air as well and it's going down and he's going to be out well he didn't forget about
09:50it he's not bought these innings again and he's hit it straight down bruce lee's throat
09:54well he made a bad mistake or a lousy shot out of the one before and that one
09:59he really did middle but he middled it straight to bruce lee and so
10:03that wasn't the sort of concentration that uh pakistan or washim roger
10:09washim roger was known for his flamboyant and stylish batting marked by elegant stroke play and
10:33fearless aggression a left-handed middle order best man he possessed a natural flair and
10:38often took on ballers with confident drives cuts and lofted shots especially against spinners his
10:44footwork was smooth and he had the ability to change the gears quickly shifting from defense to attack
10:51with ease washim roger batting had a touch of grace and unpredictably making him a fan favorite he
10:58often played with a carefree charm yet delivered crucial performances under pressure showcasing both
