We need to talk about China. This weekend we witnessed the undignified spectacle of the House of Commons belatedly passing emergency legislation. But why did it need rescuing in the first place? When I was in Government I held discussions with Jingye, who were the owners of British steel. The details need not detain us but safe to say that they were constructive and I walked away feeling that the company was committed to making British steel work. What changed? Is it possible that the Chinese Communist Party instructed Jingye to give the British Government a problem, close the steelworks and sell off the coking core and iron ore needed to keep the blast furnaces on. In China, as the former head of Alibaba knows to his cost, private companies are merely arms of the state. It is so important to view the behaviour of Jingye in the wider context of increasing hostility from China. Last week, a Member of Parliament was banned from entering Hong Kong. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse was detained, questioned and deported by the authorities. The reason given? Well, there was no reason given. One can only assume Mrs Hobhouse’s membership of the inter-parliamentary alliance on China and its critical stance on the Peking government’s human rights record didn’t help her case. And yes, before the left wing shout ‘what about Israel’ I believe that the Israeli government should have allowed both those Labour MPs into Israel.Returning to domestic matters. I fear we could be seeing the opening rounds of a diplomatic spat between the UK and China. The Chinese government has warned, or threatened, the British government to treat Jingye fairly and “not to affect the confidence of Chinese enterprises in investing and cooperating in the UK” .With this backdrop, you have to ask how sensible it is to allow the Chinese government to build a new mega-embassy next to the Tower of London. I urge the government to follow the example of the previous Conservative government and block the plans and face up to the bullying Chinese Communist Party which is no friend of ours.

00:00Welcome back to State of the Nation. We need to talk about China.
00:03This weekend we witnessed the undignified spectacle of the House of Commons belatedly passing emergency legislation, rushing to stand still.
00:11But why did it need rescuing in the first place?
00:14When I was in government, I held discussions with Jingyi, who the owners of British Steel still are.
00:19The details need not detain us, but safe to say that they were constructive.
00:22They were losing a lot of money and they were willing to lose more.
00:25And I felt that the company wanted to make British Steel work.
00:28So what has changed?
00:31Is it possible that the Chinese Communist Party instructed Jingyi to give the British government a problem,
00:36close the steelworks and sell off the caking coal in Ireland, or needed to keep the blast furnaces working?
00:41In China, as the former head of Alibaba knows to his cost, private companies are merely arms of the state.
00:48It's so important to view the behaviour of Jingyi in the wider context of increasing antagonism, indeed possibly even hostility, from China.
00:56Last week, a member of Parliament, Vera Hophouse, my neighbour when I was an MP, and actually I disagree with her on many things, a very decent woman, was banned from entering Hong Kong.
01:06Upon arrival in Hong Kong, she was detained, questioned and deported by their authorities.
01:12She was just going to visit her new grandchild.
01:14And the reason given? Well, of course, they didn't give one, did they?
01:19One can only assume Mrs. Hophouse's membership of the Interparliamentary Alliance on China and its critical stance on the Peking government's human rights record didn't help her case.
01:29And yes, before the left-wing shout, what about Israel?
01:31Well, I think it was unfortunate that the Israeli government did not allow Labour MPs into Israel.
01:36I thought it was a pity.
01:38But returning to domestic matters, I fear we could be seeing the opening rounds of a diplomatic spat between the UK and China, and we must be strong.
01:46The Chinese government has warned or threatened the British government to treat Jingyi fairly and not to affect the confidence of Chinese enterprises in investing and cooperating in the UK.
01:56With this background, you have to ask how sensible it is to allow the Chinese government to build a new mega-embassy next to the Tower of London.
02:04I hope the government will follow the example of the Conservative government and block these plans and face up to the bullying Chinese Communist Party, which is no friend of ours.
