00:00There are more than 1,500 people living in tunnels below Las Vegas.
00:04I'm always wondering what f***ing time it is.
00:06Directly under the billion-dollar casinos, luxury nightclubs, and blackjack tables.
00:10People suffering from homelessness, drug addictions, and mental health trauma
00:14are living completely off the grid and by their own rules.
00:17Do you mind if I ask what happens to your eye?
00:19I'm sure I'm going to head.
00:20I want to find out what this hidden community is like,
00:23how these people ended up down here,
00:25and shine a light on this mysterious underground world.
00:27Down we go.
00:30This is the Las Vegas Strip.
00:38The Las Vegas Strip is really loud.
00:40It has a lot of cars.
00:41It's crazy to me to think there's a tunnel below this street where the people are living.
00:46I've been to Vegas many times, but I've never had the goosebumps like I have now.
00:50None of these people here on street level know about what's going on underground.
00:54We're going deep down, my friends.
00:56We're going down.
00:57Down, down, down.
00:58I am on my way to meet up with Rob.
01:00An ex-tunnel resident who escaped homelessness after an attack that left him near dead on the train tracks.
01:05I'm really lucky to have him as my guide because it is next level dangerous to venture inside the tunnels alone.
01:10We're starting here at the Shine a Light Foundation headquarters, which is a non-profit helping the community.
01:15Everyone who works here are people that used to live in the tunnel, so they understand the life.
01:19They know how to talk to the people, and it's awesome to see how they're giving back.
01:21And I'm going to put a link in the description down below if you guys want to donate and help support the community.
01:25Here we go.
01:26Over 600 miles of tunnels stretch beneath Las Vegas, where people take shelter and create new lives.
01:31The tunnels are prone to flooding during monsoon season, and drugs like fentanyl and crystal meth are widespread.
01:36Today, I'll be heading down with some volunteers, and we're starting directly beneath one of the most iconic casinos in Vegas, Caesar's Palace.
01:43All right, we've got the Dream Team going down.
01:46What do you guys got down here?
01:48Narcan.
01:48Narcan and care packages.
01:51Nice.
01:52They contain, like, socks and, like, food and just necessities and stuff.
01:57Have you been down here many times?
01:59This one is, like, it changes a lot.
02:00So you don't know all the people down here?
02:02I don't.
02:03I've got to be honest, it's pretty intimidating to stand here and look down at the tunnel.
02:05You can see all the trash here leading into the tunnel.
02:08It's absolutely mind-blowing.
02:09Like, I just had a loss for words right now.
02:11I don't even know what to say or what to think, but it's very sad.
02:22Where are you originally from?
02:23Boise.
02:24Boise?
02:25I'm from Boise.
02:26What about you, man?
02:27I'm from Riverside, California.
02:29Oh, nice, Ryan.
02:29Why did you choose this spot over other spots?
02:31Because I knew one of the guys here, and he was pretty cool.
02:34I used cops and everything.
02:35But after the cops came, they kind of fished.
02:39I fished this one.
02:41Does this hurt when you look at it in your eyes?
02:45Yeah, it's a laser, man.
02:46It hurts.
02:46It doesn't hurt when you put it in your eyes?
02:49No, like, it's like I'm, like, from another place and shit.
02:51Like, I can, like, make a little sun, and I can, like, sit there and shine.
02:54And lasers on my eyes.
02:55It makes me feel better.
02:56Like, I'll wait.
02:57What do you guys do during the day or just hang out here?
03:00During the day, it's like, I try not to do too much.
03:03But at night is when I attack.
03:06What do you do at night?
03:07Get supplies.
03:08Get supplies?
03:09Yeah.
03:12Do you sleep here, right here?
03:14Uh, no.
03:14It's like my office area.
03:18I don't sleep.
03:19I'm a vampire.
03:20Yeah, there you go.
03:20I'm Nosferatu.
03:21I just woke up recently.
03:22I'll, like, check it out.
03:23You see?
03:23Yeah.
03:24Yeah, you said you didn't see.
03:25I'm, like, a dark shaman priest.
03:29I used to worship Satan.
03:31Lucifer is, like, the main thing.
03:33I just remember these names are probably today.
03:36You worshiped him before?
03:37Well, no, never.
03:38Like, I'm my own guy.
03:39I don't worship shit, but I got people's backs.
03:42F*** drugs, you know what I mean?
03:43If y'all wanted to take maybe, like, a hit.
03:47Which drug do you prefer?
03:49I like blues.
03:49I would quit f***ing crystal if I had blues, like, a prescription and shit or whatnot.
03:53I like morphine, like morphine's and shit.
03:55This is for you, man.
03:56Thank you, man.
03:57I really, I needed this.
03:58With this, I'm going to try to get my ID, maybe, like, like, um, I might end up just
04:03wasting it on drugs.
04:04It's nice to meet you.
04:05I'll say there's a way out, brother.
04:06What I need is some people to just pray for me to have, like, strength and physique's.
04:11Is that Narcan?
04:13Narcan?
04:13I'm going to give you some, guys.
04:15I'm going to give you some.
04:15What is that?
04:17No, it takes three to bring you back.
04:19Oh, nasal spray.
04:21Take it easy, bro.
04:22Take it easy, guys.
04:22Yep, yep.
04:23Getting out of here is insane.
04:25Jeez, we barely fit in here.
04:28Oh, man.
04:32Sludge foot.
04:34Ah!
04:35A big boy over here.
04:37I got it.
04:37Could be a lineman.
04:39Thank you, brother.
04:40All right, we are heading down.
04:42Shine a light.
04:44Shine a light.
04:47Shine a light.
04:49Shine a light.
04:50That's a fly.
04:51It is dark in these tunnels.
04:52It is dark in these tunnels.
04:53We are just approaching and seeing if anyone is there.
05:00I hate being hated by most everyone for what other people do.
05:04Not all homeless people are bad.
05:06I like that.
05:08This is crazy, dude.
05:10So sketchy.
05:10It's completely dark in here.
05:13And cold.
05:15It's interesting that there's natural light right here.
05:17Like, crazy, right?
05:20Just a manhole cover.
05:21There's daylight right there.
05:23You can see a little glimpse of the sky.
05:27Crazy.
05:28Let's turn off the light for one second.
05:31Oops.
05:32Damn, it is pitch black in here.
05:34They live here.
05:35They wake up.
05:36They know.
05:36They know where the rocks are.
05:37They can hear the sounds of the street.
05:38Everything.
05:39Everything.
05:39What is that sound right now?
05:40Is that like...
05:41The street.
05:41Cars.
05:42Just cars on the street?
05:42Yeah, the freeway is right here.
05:43We're under the freeway.
05:44The tunnel is like the best example of both addiction and homelessness because to think
05:51that this would be your normal, but it gives you the illusion, right?
05:54Like, I got a roof over my head.
05:55During the summer, it's not as hot down here.
05:57During the winter, it's not as cold because it blocks the wind.
06:00You know what I mean?
06:01Right.
06:01There was a lot of randomness that happened.
06:03You know what I mean?
06:04Like, there was a guy in my neighborhood that was killing homeless people with a hammer
06:07for a couple weeks and they caught him.
06:09You know what I mean?
06:09But like, just random stuff like that.
06:11Like, people would drive by and throw a bottle.
06:13People would, you know, yell things.
06:14Damn.
06:15And plus other homeless people out there.
06:17You know what I mean?
06:17Whoa.
06:19What is going on over here?
06:21It's all debris from the last rain.
06:24Whoa.
06:25Dude.
06:26That's the back of Caesar's house.
06:27Yeah.
06:28It's crazy.
06:28You can see the sign for Rod Stewart, but like, nobody knows that there's people under
06:33here.
06:40Why did you originally come to Vegas?
06:42I had, uh, was getting in a lot of trouble back home and I had a friend that lived out
06:46here.
06:46He was, he was a cook and I was a cook at the time.
06:49I came out here to kind of try and change my life.
06:51And when I landed very quickly, I realized he wasn't so much a friend as much as a using
06:56buddy.
06:56You know what I mean?
06:57And so I landed here.
06:58We were in a bad neighborhood and it was really the environment, right?
07:01The environment I was able to continue to do what I was doing.
07:03So I was kind of able to hold it together for a while, get married, had kids.
07:06And eventually it kind of came to, it came to an end.
07:09And then when did you first hear about the tunnels?
07:11I didn't hear about him until I was like two, three years homeless.
07:14I had relapsed, was homeless right away.
07:16I was living on the surface.
07:17And when you're homeless, like there's no resources.
07:19You don't know where anything is.
07:20You know what I mean?
07:21So I kind of had to learn on the fly and it kind of progressed, right?
07:24I, I, I was the area I talk about for masters, like a major hug for homelessness in Las Vegas.
07:30And that got used to being homeless, figured out my hustles and all that.
07:33And then I went to another area of town called, by the Rescue Mission.
07:37And while I was there, I built up a group of friends and people that I used to hustle with
07:41and get high together.
07:42And the day came, my buddy was like, hey, come over here, come check us out with me.
07:45I went with him.
07:45He introduced me to what would be my tunnel for the next two and a half years.
07:48What was life like those first few years in the tunnel?
07:51Little sense of community, you know what I mean?
07:53And, but it was also a lot of chaos too.
07:55You know what I mean?
07:55A lot of chaos.
07:56Is that Jay?
07:57You want, you want Jay?
07:59Jay, I brought, I brought a friend.
08:00He wants to talk to you.
08:01Where are you from, bro?
08:02New Hampshire, East Coast.
08:04Oh, which part of New Hampshire?
08:05Like, I grew up in Trichester, but I lived in Concord most of it.
08:08And how long have you been out here in North Vegas?
08:10Too long, like 10 years, 12 years, I don't know, a long time.
08:14What's it like to live down here?
08:16It's horrible.
08:16Yeah, there's no plus side to it in any way.
08:18It can flood at any time, even though we have a drought.
08:21Fievery is always a problem.
08:23And then seriously haunted.
08:25Haunted?
08:25Oh, yeah.
08:26And what ways?
08:27Some stuff's from here, some's not.
08:29I mean, basically, I suppose.
08:31So, there's no sense of community, like people getting along, or everyone, every man for
08:35themselves?
08:35I mean, it used to be a community, but those days are gone.
08:39I can't even tell you who lives here.
08:40Is there anything that you want that you don't have right now?
08:42All material objects have zero value to me.
08:44I've had all my stuff stolen so many times and bulldozed.
08:47It's absolutely irrelevant.
08:48That has no value whatsoever.
08:49Money really has no value.
08:51I mean, like I say that, it's like, that's sad.
08:53I mean, I get a bunch of money in the bank, social security.
08:55I'm 100% disabled.
08:56I get money every month, social security, no bank account that I can't get because I
08:59don't have my ID.
09:00But it sounds like there is an escape for you.
09:02No, there is.
09:03And, you know, I don't give a f*** about the money in any way.
09:06You have no idea how much I mean.
09:07I could kill us.
09:08What's the worst thing that's happened to you down here?
09:11The haunted thing's pretty f***ing serious.
09:13I mean, I don't even tell people about this.
09:16There's demons.
09:17There's s*** that's from here.
09:18There's s*** not from here.
09:19You've seen demons?
09:19Oh, yeah.
09:20What do they look like?
09:20They're blacker than black.
09:22What kind of drugs do you mess around with down here?
09:24Just dope, it's all.
09:25Do you have contact with any of your family back home?
09:27No, I don't talk to any of them.
09:28Friends?
09:30No.
09:30What do they think you're doing right now?
09:32They think I'm dead.
09:33They thought I was dead.
09:33Have you ever seen someone get killed down here?
09:37I've seen someone chopped up.
09:38I mean, I don't think I am.
09:40But there's definitely been people killed down here.
09:42You've seen people get chopped up?
09:44And with a knife?
09:45Something like that, yeah.
09:46Have you been in prison?
09:48No.
09:48I don't even keep up with the laws of the statutes.
09:51Now you can't stand on the boulevard.
09:53You can't sit on the boulevard.
09:54You can't be 20 yards from an elevator.
09:55You're in all the homeless people.
09:57Yeah, 100%.
09:57Going to the boulevard now is just like a go-to-jail-free card.
10:00You can't stand in one spot.
10:01You can't sit in one spot.
10:02It's some new law they just passed.
10:04It's targeted towards homeless people.
10:05Mind you, we have our own courthouse.
10:06We have different laws.
10:08If I get caught on the boulevard with a glass, like a bottle of beer, I'm going to jail for a month.
10:12But the tourists can have bottles of beer.
10:14You know, so it's illegal to push a shopping cart down the sidewalk if it has a company name on it.
10:18And now there's a new law where it's illegal to have a shopping cart even anywhere near you because it's stored property.
10:23How do you keep up with these laws?
10:24How do you know what?
10:25You can't stand 20 yards from an elevator?
10:29I mean, that's just weird.
10:30That's awful.
10:31I mean, you're just kicked out of your own land, basically.
10:34I have a land and I have a corridor restriction where you get a ticket in the corridor area, which is all the boulevards, the casinos, all the area.
10:39You go to jail for 30 days and 90 days and in six months, then a year, then five years.
10:43Mind you, I know two people that committed first-degree murder.
10:45You go out in two and a half years.
10:46Whoa.
10:46That's f***ing.
10:47Do you mind if I ask what happened to your eye?
10:49I can get a gunshot wound to the head.
10:51Yep.
10:51Down here?
10:52No.
10:52No.
10:53Back east.
10:53Okay.
10:54Yep.
10:54So every day is a gift because I guarantee that you don't expect to wake up and get shot.
10:59Are you depressed?
11:00No.
11:01You're just existing.
11:02You're coasting.
11:02That's it.
11:03Yep.
11:03And it's like, it is what it is.
11:06And I don't know how to fix the problem as far as that goes.
11:10Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
11:12Dead.
11:13I don't have anything to look forward to, I'd say.
11:16Yeah.
11:17I mean that.
11:18It's like, I just don't.
11:19I'm not like suicidal or anything like that.
11:21I just don't.
11:22Every day is like the movie Groundhog Day.
11:24It's repetitive every day.
11:26And anything you try to do to get ahead won't work.
11:29Shine a light, brother.
11:32It's Rob.
11:37Where you at, brother?
11:40Okay, I see you.
11:41I'm coming over.
11:41You good?
11:43Don't shoot.
11:43Do you have a cigarette?
11:47I do, baby.
11:49How you been?
11:50I got my friend with me.
11:52He's got a camera.
11:53Hi.
11:54Hi.
11:54How are you?
11:55Here's three.
11:56Here you go.
11:58You need a lighter?
11:58Here you go, baby.
12:02How long have you been down here?
12:04I just got here.
12:05Just got here?
12:06But since 2019.
12:082019.
12:09Where are you from?
12:09You from Vegas?
12:10Mm-hmm.
12:12I just came home from the railroads.
12:13Probably their office there.
12:15Anybody else in here with you or no?
12:16Um, if they are, they're probably sleeping a little wrong.
12:20Yeah.
12:20How do you listen?
12:22Good.
12:23Here's our number.
12:25All right.
12:25If you want to try and get out, we'd love to help you.
12:27You know this.
12:27They tell you this all the time.
12:29I need a detox program, but for coming to the sewer, I almost got into one.
12:35You know?
12:35For what?
12:36And it's, it's, it's, it's, it's not like a dry, clean, uh, club thing, you know?
12:45We're lying.
12:48It's, um, mm-hmm.
12:52Mm-hmm.
12:52Mm-hmm.
12:53All right.
12:54It can be.
12:55Give us a call, okay?
12:57Mm-hmm.
12:58Have a good day.
12:59All right.
13:00Thank you, you too.
13:02Um, is it wavy?
13:04No.
13:05Out there?
13:05Okay.
13:06Come on.
13:08She's clearly on drugs, right?
13:10Yeah, mental health, too.
13:12Oh, it is, yeah.
13:12Yeah.
13:13But if you had to guess, what kind of drugs is she on?
13:15Ah, probably meth.
13:18Probably meth.
13:18Meth is a very popular homeless drug because it keeps you attentive, keeps you, like, aware.
13:23You know what I mean?
13:24Like, you can hustle.
13:25He's got a camera, just so you know.
13:26Show me.
13:27How you doing?
13:28How are you, brother?
13:29Good.
13:29How are you?
13:30Good.
13:30Do you want to talk to him for a little bit?
13:32How you doing?
13:32What's going on?
13:33How you doing, man?
13:34How you doing?
13:35Nice to meet you.
13:36Yes, brother.
13:37How long have you been doing down here?
13:40It's almost a few years.
13:42A few years?
13:43That's where you sleep?
13:44Yeah.
13:46Before I sleep.
13:47Yeah.
13:48Yeah.
13:48Is it comfortable?
13:49Yeah.
13:49You just got these supplies, like, from outside and then just put them down?
13:55And what is all this stuff?
13:56A great structure.
13:57Oh, that's not yours?
13:59What's that toilet situation like down here?
14:01A bucket.
14:02Bucket?
14:03Then take it out.
14:05What about the fact that there's no light anywhere?
14:07Is that tough?
14:08No.
14:09No?
14:10Fascinating.
14:10It's their home.
14:11They're used to it.
14:12Like, when I was down here, I used to do this.
14:13If I didn't have a license, put my hand on the wall.
14:15You just run it like this, and you know where...
14:17Yeah.
14:18When you were down here, did you have a setup like this for bed?
14:21Similar.
14:21Very similar.
14:22Yeah.
14:22I was pretty simple.
14:24I didn't have a...
14:25At times, I had big camps and all that, but then by the end, I was just, you know, crash
14:30out and keep going.
14:31Right.
14:32You know, my hustle was like dumpster diving and petty crimes and shit.
14:37You know, it wasn't that good.
14:37I got attacked with a golf club one time.
14:39I got hit with a...
14:40I mean, it was just like, it wasn't that big a deal.
14:42Crazy.
14:42In the moment, it was, right?
14:44But like, that's how...
14:46I saw a sword fight.
14:48I was walking down the street in the middle of the night.
14:50I looked to my left.
14:51I hear cling, cling, cling.
14:51Three guys were fighting with swords, bleeding the whole nine yards.
14:55And I just kept walking.
14:58It wasn't even that big...
14:59Because...
15:00I might get involved.
15:01I don't have a sword.
15:02But also, like, that was normal.
15:04I remember sitting under the bridge one day and the guy was like, you know this isn't normal,
15:08right?
15:09Like, normal people are not walking around with knives.
15:11And I was...
15:12For me, it was.
15:13You know what I mean?
15:14Right.
15:14Yeah.
15:15It just became normal.
15:16We're going back this way?
15:18Yeah.
15:18Let's go find some people.
15:20Yeah.
15:20I am shocked by the stories coming out of the tunnels.
15:23How can people survive down here?
15:25The Las Vegas Underground is an example of what's wrong with our approach to homelessness
15:28in America.
15:29It's difficult when people are arrested on random charges like jaywalking and given little
15:33resources when they get out of jail.
15:35We need more organizations like Shine a Light that treat humans with dignity.
15:38As for now, we are heading above ground to drive to a different tunnel and I have no idea who
15:43we are bound to meet.
15:44It's crazy that you just walk on the street next to all these buildings, golf courses, and then
15:53just right under here.
15:56That's the biggest thing with homelessness, especially in Las Vegas, right?
15:58Like, nobody even knows they're here.
16:01Yeah, exactly.
16:02Nobody knows they're here.
16:03It's where it becomes like this cat and mouse game of they don't want to be seen and they
16:07don't want to be, you know, they don't want to get in trouble, which I understand, right?
16:12I was out here doing the same things.
16:14You know that guy?
16:15You want a cigarette?
16:18You want a cigarette?
16:19He looks a little violent.
16:20Yeah, for sure.
16:21Should we not go in there?
16:22It's all right.
16:23How are you, brother?
16:26What are you looking for?
16:27Shine a light?
16:28You were just safe.
16:30Rob.
16:30Southern Nevada, I was just safe.
16:32you.
16:34you.
16:35you.
16:37How you guys doing today?
16:39Good, brother.
16:39How are you?
16:40I'm, I'm, I can be better.
16:43Yeah.
16:43You know, going through a divorce.
16:45Yeah.
16:46It hurts bad.
16:48Yeah.
16:48Like, real bad.
16:49I've been through two of them, I get it.
16:50I don't give a about anything, you know?
16:53Our numbers on there.
16:55You've been through two divorces?
16:57I have, yeah.
16:58Sucks.
16:59Sucks like ass.
17:00It sucks.
17:01It takes two to make it work.
17:03It takes two to watch something beautiful.
17:05I'd rather throw you in the trunk of three of her
17:06for fate.
17:08Hey, our, our number's on that bracelet, man.
17:10If you ever want help, please call us.
17:12It's really nice of you to, like, give the bracelet.
17:15It's smart to do the bracelet because it stays on them.
17:17Yeah.
17:17Really smart.
17:18If you give them a card, that card will be gone in two seconds.
17:20Two seconds.
17:21Shine a light.
17:21Anybody home?
17:27What's up, brother?
17:28How are you?
17:29That dude right here.
17:31You ever think about getting out?
17:33I just finished having a job, like, three weeks ago.
17:36And I got a car, you know?
17:37Sobriety would be great, you know what I mean?
17:40What if we take care of you?
17:41What if we take care of the first three months?
17:42Is that right?
17:43Here's the deal.
17:44We'll walk through this together, okay?
17:46Okay.
17:46So I'll take you to Crossroads.
17:48You clear a detox, we'll put you into housing.
17:51Right.
17:52In housing, you do treatment, kind of work on getting all your basic documents, anything
17:56you need, get you set up, and then we'll put you in sober living.
18:00Right.
18:02We pay for the first three months of sober living, too.
18:05So it's six months.
18:06Focus on your recovery.
18:07Look for good work.
18:08We'll help you get job development.
18:10Here's my hire, brother.
18:11I did it, he did it, he did it, he's doing it.
18:14I'm doing it right now.
18:15He's graduating.
18:15I'm graduating, of course, sir.
18:17We'll help you.
18:17No, no, I feel you, though.
18:18I feel you.
18:19I need to get back on track, like, everybody here is on my case, too.
18:22Like, when are you going to get another job?
18:23When are you going to stop working?
18:25We support one another.
18:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:27Yeah, um, yeah, if I could get a phone number, it's how you guys back at it.
18:31It's on your bracelet, bro.
18:32Oh, is that right?
18:33On the inside, on the inside.
18:34Oh, okay.
18:35It rings to all our phones.
18:36Oh, really?
18:37All right, all right.
18:38Yeah, I'll hit you guys up, bro.
18:39Don't wait too long, guy.
18:41I know, I know.
18:41Thanks a lot, brother.
18:43Thanks, bro.
18:43Offer never goes away.
18:44I'll hit you guys, man.
18:45Offer never goes away.
18:46Nice to meet you, sir.
18:46Nice to meet you, bro.
18:47Take care, man.
18:48You guys have a great day.
18:49You too, bro.
18:49Stay safe out here.
18:50All right.
18:52Convincing people to accept help is no easy feat.
18:55Why should they trust anybody when they're constantly on high alert?
18:58But I'm about to talk to one volunteer who gives me hope on our way to the next tunnel.
19:02My name is Reyna.
19:03I'm originally from Southern California.
19:05I've lived in Vegas most of my life.
19:07I'm 30 years old.
19:08Were you living in the tunnels?
19:09I have lived in the tunnels before, yes.
19:12So I had a pretty normal childhood.
19:16My parents did their best with that.
19:17It was a good deal growing up.
19:19Well, when I graduated high school, I had very low self-esteem.
19:22I was with a partner that I would do quite anything for.
19:25And they brought home heroin one day.
19:28And I was upset with the situation, but I didn't walk away from it.
19:32So my life changed after that.
19:33At that point, I had lived on my own.
19:35I had a car, job.
19:37How old were you at that point?
19:38I was 18.
19:39As I became more physically dependent, I became friends with people that were more like me.
19:45And I eventually met people who lived down in the tunnels.
19:49And I was very impressed by it at first.
19:52I had no idea that people lived down there.
19:55And it started to become more normal.
19:57I would go hang out.
19:58I had friends who were really nice, genuine people.
20:02And so I would try to provide some kind of normalcy.
20:05And, you know, take them out to movies, whatever stuff.
20:08Because I still had things.
20:09And slowly those things, slept away, lost the place, was living out of the car.
20:14Or I lost my car.
20:15And, well, I knew exactly where to go because I knew safe people that, or people I felt safe around.
20:20Right.
20:21And said, hey, the day's come.
20:22I don't know what I'm doing.
20:24And, you know, I was very fortunate in that I was immediately taken in and safe.
20:30When you kept going there the first time, were you going there to do heroin or just to meet people?
20:34I was going there.
20:36It was a safe place to use with other people.
20:39I lived in the tunnels as a whole for a couple years.
20:43Outside of that, I lived in abandoned buildings.
20:46You know, little dark places on the streets, people's couches.
20:50How did you find your way out of the tunnels?
20:52I got out of homelessness on a big arrest.
20:56I got arrested and they offered me treatment because I suffered from substance use disorder.
21:01And I took the offer and my mom showed up to my court date out there.
21:06My family had been looking for me and she asked if I could do treatment out here.
21:11So I went to Salvation Army in 2017 and I wasn't homeless after that.
21:17I stayed sober in 2019.
21:19It was a gradual process of figuring things out.
21:22But that's where I started to stay around.
21:25That's awesome.
21:26And you've been sober for how long?
21:27I've been sober for four years.
21:29Congratulations.
21:30I think it's nice to have resources and a community of people that we didn't have when I was out here.
21:37I was going to ask you about the dude with a sign on the street.
21:48I was just about to say, do you know that guy?
21:50But then I figured, no, there's so many homeless people here.
21:52You probably don't know him.
21:53He's like, I know that guy.
21:55Yeah, let's go walk across and pick him for sure.
21:58All right, we are going to find that guy holding the sign.
22:00Found the hole.
22:02Yeah.
22:02So it's common for people to kind of beg on the street in the day and then at night go to the tunnel?
22:08Yeah, of course.
22:08They'd probably, you know, they'd take shifts, I'm sure, like spots and then go.
22:12How much money do you think they can make in one day by holding a sign here?
22:15I had a guy, when I first got, was first homeless, he was ruthless.
22:20Yeah.
22:21His signs would be like, I lost my brother.
22:23You know what I mean?
22:24Just total guilt trip.
22:25He would make hundreds of dollars.
22:27Really?
22:27That's kind of up to say I lost my brother to get money.
22:30That's not cool, man.
22:31You're just lying to people, essentially.
22:33So that's probably where it comes from for me, right?
22:35Yeah, yeah.
22:36Irish.
22:37Hey, man.
22:41How you doing, man?
22:43Drew, nice to meet you.
22:44I was getting it online.
22:45Did you make any money out there?
22:47No.
22:47Nothing?
22:48I did it on the street before, Jason McQuadden.
22:50Did you make any money?
22:51Oh, yeah, man.
22:52Yeah.
22:52How much?
22:54680 bucks in one day, one more.
22:55What?
22:56He said he made 680 bucks in one day on the street.
22:58Yeah, I believe it.
22:59I threw a sign that said my wife left me for a very ugly man with a much smaller penis
23:04than mine.
23:05You put that on the sign?
23:06Troy, my mother, Jr. on the bottom.
23:08He bought my sign, a big sign.
23:10He bought it for $400 himself.
23:13Promise not to put his name on it.
23:15How long have you been living out here?
23:17Every since my kids died.
23:19When was that?
23:202011.
23:212011, my son was shot and killed out of jealousy because he got a full football scholarship.
23:27Really?
23:27And yeah, it's over 14, 2011.
23:30A drunk driver went off the side of the road and killed my daughter and friend.
23:33Oh, that's terrible, man.
23:34We got the whole crew with us.
23:36We have a bag full of supplies and we are heading in to our next tunnel.
23:39Oh, I still don't see the tunnel.
23:41Oh, it's there.
23:42It's like a puzzle to find the entrance to the tunnel.
23:45Oh, wow.
23:47That's the entrance?
23:48Whoa.
23:50That's how you get in?
23:51Well, this is one way.
23:52You want me to come this way?
23:53What?
23:54You have to go down the road?
23:54Yeah.
23:55Welcome to Las Vegas.
23:59It's like right here by the...
24:01Yeah, I mean, we walked around for like 15 minutes to find the entrance and it's this.
24:04Yeah, it is.
24:05Literally.
24:06Literally.
24:06Have you seen an...
24:07The wood ladder is pretty important.
24:09Have you seen an entrance like this before?
24:10I have not.
24:10I have not.
24:11Are you going down?
24:13Yeah.
24:13All right.
24:15We're going in.
24:15We're here coming in.
24:17Hey, it was beautiful.
24:18Look at that form.
24:25Oh, good.
24:26Down we go.
24:26Yeah.
24:28You want to take it out there?
24:29All right.
24:29All right.
24:32Appreciate it.
24:34Long walk, bro.
24:36Whoa, man.
24:38This is wild.
24:40We are walking in puddles right now.
24:42These are the only shoes I have.
24:43They're going to be dry for days.
24:45Water hitting us from the ceiling.
24:48Well, my feet are completely soaked in water like socks and shoes and doesn't smell good.
24:56How about this place is creepy.
24:59It's really dark, but it's grimy down here.
25:06We've been walking in here for a while.
25:08It's crazy.
25:08People brought two baby alligators from Georgia here.
25:11And one of them died instantly.
25:13And the other one lived for three years.
25:15It got to be almost seven feet long.
25:17Oh, man, got a guy in the bag.
25:19It's taking money to go.
25:20There was an alligator here, I think?
25:21Sure.
25:23Whoa.
25:25Look at that.
25:28Oh, you don't have any more flashbacks?
25:30Nice flashbacks.
25:30You got socks and water.
25:32Can I get some?
25:32Sure.
25:34Are you fixing your bike?
25:36Huh?
25:36Oh, no, no, no, he's going to fix that leg.
25:38Yeah, come on.
25:38I'm sorry.
25:39Oh.
25:40Here you go.
25:41All right, thank you.
25:42You're welcome.
25:42Nice to meet you.
25:43It is so eerie down here, it's hard to put into words.
25:55The smell, the water at your feet, you can hear the cars above you.
26:01It's like, it feels like you're in a dungeon of hell, basically.
26:06How you doing, bro?
26:06What's going on?
26:08Where are you from, man?
26:10From Hawaii.
26:10Hawaii?
26:11Oh.
26:12Which island?
26:13Oahu.
26:14Oh, nice.
26:14So is Jesse, yeah.
26:15Yeah, so is Jesse, the guy that's coming right now.
26:18How long have you been down here?
26:19Uh, maybe about a year.
26:21About a year?
26:22Yeah.
26:23You ever think about coming out?
26:25Yeah, but the cops, like, on the streets, they're debunking, like, every two days.
26:32Like, sometimes they throw in my shit, like, two, three times a week.
26:35They're hoping for you to catch a case, you know, and go to jail.
26:38What's it like to live down here?
26:39At first, it's creepy as fuck, but then, you know,
26:43like, it took me, like, six months before I'd even come in the tunnel.
26:47And then, you know, I noticed, like, maybe two, three months of just staring in the dark
26:52from the opening.
26:53Right.
26:54Because you see shit, you know, like, all the time.
26:56I see all kinds of shit.
26:57I saw somebody riding behind a bike, but then they disappear.
27:00How long do you plan to stay here?
27:02I'm not sure.
27:03You have everything you need?
27:04You have food?
27:05Yeah.
27:06I'm good at finding stuff.
27:07What do you do above ground?
27:09I'll go treasure hunting.
27:10I'll go treasure hunting down here, too.
27:11What does that mean?
27:12Just looking around, finding stuff?
27:14Yeah, I check the cracks, and then I'm good at finding shit.
27:16Like, some punk-ass stole my backpack, like, three weeks ago.
27:20I've been stopped this car right in front of my cart, and then grabbed my backpack, two
27:24of my backpacks, and then I dipped out.
27:27I had, like, two pounds of silver, close to a half pound of gold that I found in the tunnels.
27:31Really?
27:31Yeah.
27:32I mean, I pawned some of it, but dude stole, like, a good amount.
27:37How many hours a day do you spend up versus down here?
27:40Depends.
27:40If I go to the scrapyard, I'll be out all night, like, looking around for shit,
27:45and then I kind of procrastinate, so I could be down here for days.
27:50Is that tough, like, mentally, to not see sunlight for days?
27:54If you fall asleep and you wake up with no flashlight, it sucks, too,
27:57so I'm always wondering what time it is.
28:00Have you found other people down here to be friendly?
28:02Oh, yeah, super friendly.
28:03Like, we'll kill you if you're like a chomo or something, you know what I mean?
28:07But everybody's, for the most part, friendly.
28:09Do you mind me asking, like, what were you doing before you came here?
28:12I was a chef at the Wynn.
28:13I just make $87,000 a year.
28:15Really?
28:16Yeah.
28:16That sounds like a good life.
28:18Nah.
28:19Everybody's up their asses and super pretentious, you know?
28:22I wasn't like a regular one.
28:23I used to cook for Mr. Wynn, so...
28:25What's he like?
28:26I'm Steve Wynn, and this is my new hotel.
28:30I'll be ordering, like, wildebeest or some penguins or something.
28:33He just likes, like, mozzarella omelet with burnt onions, like, burnt to charcoal.
28:38So, do you ever want to be a chef again or not really?
28:41Not really.
28:42Uber driving was fun.
28:43You had the opportunity to keep, you know, Ubering or being a chef, but you decided to come down here just because you...
28:49Did you want to be away from people?
28:51Well, I just wanted to be away from the cops, but...
28:53So, I used to make pretty good money, you know?
28:55Like, the only thing I really miss is my car and my bathroom and my kitchen.
28:58Because I had a badass kitchen and a huge bathroom, but you end up working, like, 16, 18 hours a day, you know, just to pay for the place that you're not using.
29:08Are you planning to go back out today, treasure hunting?
29:12No, I got to go cash out some shit.
29:15I got mostly everything ready to go cash out.
29:18Do you mind if I take a look at some of the stuff you got?
29:21Yeah.
29:21Oh, you're cooking over here.
29:23Yeah.
29:24Oh, you got...
29:25It's like a $900 beach cruiser found in the trash that's a film.
29:30Oh.
29:31Dude, you got a whole lot of shit over here.
29:33I got a specialized dump dumper down there.
29:35That's a $5,000 bike.
29:37Dude, you got, like, tens of thousands of dollars of weird stuff, bro.
29:40I got a con rifted for morning.
29:41What's that?
29:49A bag full of Jordans.
29:51You just found it?
29:52Yeah, f***.
29:53Like, one of those, you know, like, limited edition jerseys.
29:59Where did you find it?
29:59In the dumpster?
30:00Yeah.
30:01So someone just threw it away and you just picked it up.
30:03They just got nowhere to look.
30:05But, like, I mean, them's all Jordans.
30:07Dude, what the f***?
30:08There's a lot of...
30:11Dude, there's a lot of drawers, man.
30:13Hell yeah.
30:13Why the hell would someone just throw that in a dumpster, bro?
30:15You'd be surprised if you'd find it in a dumpster.
30:17What's the most valuable thing you found?
30:20A Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.
30:23What'd you do with it?
30:25I was going to pawn it, but then f***ing...
30:28When I was shopping around the pawn shops,
30:30the person that I had in safekeeping was like,
30:32they got us, bro.
30:33So, yeah, whatever.
30:35You got all that other stuff down there?
30:38Uh, that's just, like,
30:40like, clothes that need to be washed.
30:42There's another dude's camp down there.
30:44Are you friendly with him?
30:45Yeah.
30:47I don't know if he's in or not.
30:49Yeah.
30:49This chick was acting up this morning,
30:51so he might be out f***ing treasure hunting, too.
30:54Damn, dude, you got all kinds of stuff in here.
30:56Yeah.
30:57Most of it I'd tear apart.
30:59Just for fun?
31:00No, for scrap.
31:02Oh.
31:02Like, uh, s*** I take is, like,
31:05you know, like, stuff that I can break apart for scrap.
31:08So what do you do when it rains?
31:09Do you just go up?
31:10Well, you just gotta be ready for it
31:12if it's gonna rain big and fast, or...
31:14How do you get a notice if it's gonna rain?
31:16Someone says, hey, it's raining.
31:18I mean, sometimes you don't get no notice.
31:19You just gotta, like, your f***ing main s***
31:22that you don't want to lose
31:23and just grab that s*** and go sometimes.
31:25How do you get power to cook?
31:28Oh, f***ing wood fire.
31:29You just make a wood fire?
31:31Yeah.
31:32I can do f***ing...
31:33But there's no chimney,
31:34so what, just everything gets super smoky in here?
31:36Nah, you just gotta know how to do it.
31:39You think you'll ever have, like,
31:40the motivation to go out
31:41and work a big boy job again?
31:43Like, in the casino or something?
31:44In the restaurant?
31:46Nah, I'm smart enough to f***ing...
31:48do whatever I like.
31:49Just treasure hunting s***
31:51and, you know, make about the same.
31:53You can make $80,000 a year?
31:56Probably.
31:56I just gotta f***ing refine
31:59my little gold-hunting skills.
32:01That's impressive, dude.
32:03Like, I already know how to f***ing
32:04pull the gold out the circuit boards
32:06from all these computers and s***.
32:08Mm-hmm.
32:09So...
32:10Probably could come close.
32:12You don't seem like someone
32:13who's taking drugs all the time.
32:15I take drugs all the time,
32:16but I do that s*** for fun, you know?
32:18Yeah, you don't do it, like...
32:19Yeah, I don't f***ing deal
32:20from nobody to do that or...
32:22What s***?
32:22What drug do you prefer?
32:24Crystal.
32:25Yeah.
32:25Everybody likes some blues
32:27and s*** nowadays.
32:28Like, uh...
32:29That s*** dangerous, though.
32:30Is it easy to find down here?
32:32I mean, you can find it anywhere.
32:34It's expensive?
32:35Nah, it's super cheap s*** down here.
32:37Like, you can get, like,
32:39a thousand dollars worth of s***
32:40for, like, 20 bucks.
32:41Really?
32:4140 bucks.
32:42That cheap?
32:43Why is it so cheap here?
32:44Because it only works
32:45what somebody's gonna pay for it.
32:46That's true.
32:47Before you f***ing get it stolen or...
32:49Yeah, that makes sense.
32:50Yeah.
32:51Is this, like, a dark and scary place
32:53when you're all f***ed up?
32:53Nah.
32:55You just kind of zen out?
32:57Ain't s*** scare me no more.
32:59Like, I mean,
33:00you gotta really try.
33:02Where do you see yourself
33:02in five years from now?
33:05I'm smart,
33:05so I could stay here
33:06or I could go.
33:08I might make a ninja turtle
33:09layer deeper in.
33:09How would you explain
33:12the tunnels of Las Vegas
33:13to somebody
33:13who's never heard of them before?
33:15Fun and, like,
33:17good deals if you...
33:19You gotta know people at first,
33:20though.
33:20You gotta know somebody's name
33:21and be invited
33:22or else
33:23don't even come down
33:25or else you might end up
33:26in a birdcage.
33:28Yeah.
33:28I really appreciate you sharing, man.
33:30It's...
33:30No problem.
33:30After being in the tunnel
33:32for a few hours,
33:33my feet are completely drenched,
33:35smell like crap,
33:36and...
33:37What am I complaining about?
33:38These people have nothing.
33:40Addicted to drugs
33:41that's really, really sad.
33:42And they do need help.
33:43Beneath the glitz and glamour
33:44of Sin City,
33:45there is a dark side
33:46that nobody is talking about.
33:48And today,
33:48I got to witness it firsthand.
33:50Homeless people across the U.S.
33:51need our help
33:52and they need better resources
33:53to combat drug addiction
33:54and mental health issues.
33:56No one should have to live this way,
33:57confined to darkness
33:58and forced to scavenge
33:59for basic needs.
34:01Nonprofits like Shine a Light
34:02are on the front lines
34:03of cleaning up our cities
34:04and are doing the work
34:05to recognize each individual
34:06and give them a home.
34:07I made this video
34:08to spread awareness
34:09and to remind you
34:10that the next time you're in Vegas,
34:11there's a whole world
34:12that exists right under your feet.
34:14Thanks for watching
34:14and I'll see you in the next video.
