00:00The original Gothic was so popular and so unique at the time that I feel like it deserves a proper remake.
00:30Our approach was first and foremost to respect and embrace the original vision behind the game.
00:54We started the original vision, we tried to understand everything, what they were trying to say, what they were trying to convey, and we just thought about, okay, this is a remake, that's the first thing the fans should have to, we are not trying to ring down the wheel or to do something crazy with the Gothic franchise, I mean, this is a remake, we embrace, we honor the original vision, and we just try to approach it with the uttermost respect.
01:19After so many years, and actually after quite a short time after the release of Gothic 1, when I look back at the music that I've done back then, I kind of always find the things that I would have loved to improve.
01:32If I had more time, I would have thrown things away and replaced them with other ideas.
01:37So that constant, you know, striving and drive to make everything better, now I get a second chance, so I can return to my music that I wrote back then, and create new versions, create fresh versions that kind of stand the test of time.
01:52It's been more than 20 years since the first Gothic came out, and it's difficult to think about how you bring something that has such a history into modern times with the quality of life we have now, and how you stay truthful to the original experience of playing such a game, which was quite innovative, quite new to the whole market and what it brought to RPGs.
02:20I got immersed into the world of Gothic, thanks to Kai Rosenfranz and his creations, and I want to say a big thank you to Snowball localization team, because they made a huge job.
02:36The voices and localization, it helped me a lot to go deeper in this world.
02:41I think that Gothic 1 was a game that allows the player to go everywhere, anywhere, and anytime. So that feeling that the player has in order to make his own choices.
02:54There was, I don't know, 15 years, over 10 years, there was nothing happening with it, which is sad, because it's like, it's a franchise and a game that people deeply care about, and are very emotional towards it.
03:07And I'm myself sad, actually, that I never got to play another Gothic game in this time.
03:14We are fighting with memories. We're just trying to embrace the original vision of the authors.
03:20When I was young, I played the games in German. It was one of the only games which had a real character and authenticity to German-like culture.
03:33Like, the dialogues were written in a way, how you and me would speak if we would be, I don't know, friendly, drinking a beer and talking about stuff, right?
03:43And that is something that was never done by a game. Like, it was so natural and so close to reality, in a way, like, without being a simulation or whatever.
03:56It kind of, like, fascinated me always, right? Because it also, like, they were cursing each other in the game and, like, reacting to each other in a very rude way sometimes.
04:06And that was kind of, like, an attractor for me.
05:01Gothic is a very grounded game that you feel like it's tough, it's hard, but also it's very realistic.
05:08What this was amazing to me the first time that I played Gothic was how you could solve a lot of situations taking advantage of everyone.
05:17Everyone would take advantage of you, of course, but then you have these chances where you can take advantage of a character killing a scavenger for you so you can go around something.
05:57The living world, like the simulation, like everything is kind of like, everything has a daily routine, you can affect it, you can get to discover, kind of like be part of the life.
06:07It was the first simulation that I feel like was not centered around the player. It was actually going on while, you know, you were not the center of attention for everything, you were just a nobody.
06:19I really like the progression system and how you learn abilities and what also the progression had an impact on, you know, your fighting styles like the main character had.
06:32Really, I think everybody struggles fighting against the first scavenger or run away from the diggers.
06:39And for me, at this point, from them learning that all the decisions make sense and all aspects and in the end of the game you are stronger and you get a name in the colony, for me that's the most memorable thing of the game.
06:51For me, the main thing that for me defines Gothi, it's the way you interact with other characters.
06:56I mean, it's not about, you know, killing 20 wolves and so you get a rise in your level of expertise in sword fighting.
07:04It's about finding someone, convince him to teach you how to improve your skills and then maybe if you are good enough, he will teach you something.
07:15You know, this is human relations.
07:17Our aim was also to create this remake in a mindful way and with respect to the original, but we also wanted to set up like with the graphics to be like a modern game with a realistic look, right?
07:33And that kind of fights with the original because the original, they only had so much polygons per figures, for example.
07:40And with these restrictions, you design creatures and NPCs and whatever.
07:46You design it in a very specific way to get the fantasy in your head, right?
07:52You had to do this back in the day.
07:54If there is people who are like, yeah, but I like this look.
07:58If you really like the look of the original game, I mean, I think there is a game for you, which is the original.
08:04And thankfully, I mean, you can now play Gothic 1 and 2 as classic editions on modern consoles, which I think was also one of our key parts, like strategies always to take care about franchises and IPs to make sure the thing that people love is actually preserved.
08:26In the end, we're fighting to recreate the love memories.
08:29And in Spanish, we say, there's a say that say, cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor.
08:34It seems any past time was better, was way better.
08:39So in the end, we are trying to challenge with this, but it's a nice challenge.
08:43So when I see, when I read some fans comments about, and they say, for example, a new cam image, no, we released not much ago, not much time ago.
08:52And they say, wow, this is exactly how the new cam was in my margin when I was playing.
08:57And then some other fans show him the real image of the new cam of the original game.
09:03And they say, what the hell?
09:05What the fuck?
09:06What's this?
09:07In my head, it was like the remake one.
09:09So first of all, I think that the fan base of the original is a multi-layered demographic and structure.
09:18I think there's not one voice that you can listen to and say, like, if you do it like that, everybody will like it.
09:24And that's the core problem.
09:26There's so many different opinions.
09:28There's even like, when we did the graphic playable teasers, there were even like old fans who were like, great, finally we're doing something different with it.
09:38I disagree with this.
09:39I feel like with the, the playable teasers, the aim was to really push the boundaries and go over it to get strong reactions.
09:46And we got that.
09:47So, so that worked out.
09:48So back in the day, we were asking, okay, what fans want?
09:51What do they want?
09:52They want to, I mean, the same story with new graphics, then, or maybe ever told, maybe they want a new story within the world.
09:59Or maybe they want something in the line of new modern games where the character is always talking and having, and, you know, doing jokes to the player.
10:07I don't know.
10:08So we thought, okay, let's go stream.
10:10Let's force a very strong reaction.
10:12And with that, we can understand what they really want.
10:15And in the end, we got the reaction.
10:17We got a lot of ideas from the fans.
10:20The fans showed us the way and they helped us to create the pillars, the pillars of the Gothic remake.
10:26No, I remember four years ago, creating a document with the pillars of the game review and saying, okay, those are the, we cannot move.
10:34Those are the pillars of everything what we are reconstructing the next years.
10:38Those are the funding pillars and it should be that.
10:40So for me, the PT was good because it helped us to define those basic pillars.
10:45And we are here today.
10:46When we started to create the real Gothic 1 remake and got the green light to do it, we set out to, or we defined that first and foremost, we have to please the old Gothic fans.
10:59Because if, if they don't like our game, then this game has no right to exist.
11:05I would say it's two things.
11:06The first thing is to the fans is that I hope that they fully understand the, the way we embrace the original, the way we respect and try, we're trying to honor the original because we understand how important is this game on the franchise, but Gothic one in special for them.
11:21No, sometimes I read fans telling, okay, I was playing this with my father and I will play the remake with my son.
11:28So I hope that they understand that we are doing this with passion and with all of our heart.
11:34It's the, it's the people out there that make us do what we love doing.
11:39It's, they enable us to do that.
11:41And they are kind of, um, the, the other half of that, that world that kind of only works if the both halves come together.
11:49We being passionate game developers that pour our hearts and souls into making the game.
11:55and the audience that enjoys playing those games and kind of keeping it alive over so many years.
12:02And for the future, I would like to, to play Gothic Remake in 20 years with Aran, with my son.
12:07He's two years old now, but maybe in 15 years or 16 years, we can play together.
12:11And they say, okay, Papa, you did this.
12:13And I say, yeah.
12:14But yeah, maybe in 10 years, we can, we can play together to this.
12:18And we can play together to this.
12:48And all the time coming in inoplane.
12:49And we can play together to this.
12:51And tell me what does it mean?
12:52Like what color can we still diskut you?
12:53Well, it's not good at all.
12:54I swear to God, I swear to God.
12:55I swear for that.
12:56And I gotta see myuks are moving.
12:57So now it's everyone up.
12:58We can see the elves in the 12th.
12:59We can squash this.
13:00I don't know what they're doing.
13:02And we can chaseисл Deep дети.
13:05Like where people might catastrophize Ann.
13:06We can possibly fall.
13:09And everybody WHO can—
13:11Which all of them have happened in the third hand,
13:13And it should be a bit perfectly.
