00:00There are people a half a mile away
00:17Let me
00:22Nope
00:24It's not Bernie, it is you
00:33Let me
00:35Thank our brothers and sisters in the trade union movement for being here
00:43Let me thank Unite Here, LIUNA Local 724
00:48ILWU The Longshoremen
00:51CNA Nurses
00:55NNN New York Nurses
00:59NUHW Kaiser Nurses
01:03UTLA
01:06UAW
01:08California Labor Federation AFL-CIO
01:12And today we pledge
01:17With our brothers and sisters in the trade union movement
01:21We are going to grow the movement
01:24Millions of workers want to join unions
01:30Because they know they're going to get better wages, better benefits, better working conditions
01:35Let's do it
01:37And I want to thank the musicians who have been with us today
01:46So great
01:48Ray's Gospel Choir
01:51Thank you
01:53The Red Pears
01:55Jeff Rosenstock
01:57Indigo D'Souza
01:58Dirty Projectors
02:00Dirty Projectors
02:02Joan Baez
02:04Maggie Rogers
02:07Neil Young
02:09And you know why we had all of these great musicians here today?
02:16It's not just to entertain you, it's more than that
02:19We're going to make our revolution with joy
02:24We're going to sing and dance our way to victory against hatred and divisiveness
02:34So I want to thank all of the musicians who have been with us
02:41And I want to thank the political leaders who have been here
02:48Roe and Pramila and Jimmy, thank you
02:55And mostly I want to thank all of you
03:02And I want to tell you something
03:05You are making Donald Trump
03:08All right, we need a medic, medic, medic
03:15Okay?
03:19Okay
03:21Your presence here today
03:24And by the way there are some 36,000 of you
03:33The largest rally that we have ever had
03:36And your presence here today is making Donald Trump and Elon Musk very nervous
03:53Last time we did a rally in Denver a little bit smaller than this
04:04Thank you L.A.
04:09Elon Musk announced that everybody at the rally or most of the people were paid organizers
04:20Anybody here get paid to come today?
04:25No
04:28And Donald Trump
04:30Very envious of sizes
04:32He said, well Bernie has rallies of 2 or 3,000 people can't compete with Trump
04:41He lied
04:43So I invite the president to come to L.A.
04:47Tell the people here why you think it's a great idea
04:55To cut Medicaid and nutrition and healthcare so you can give tax breaks to billionaires
05:02The people of L.A. would love to hear that
05:05So why are we here in L.A. today?
05:08And the answer is obvious
05:16We are living in a moment
05:20Of extraordinary danger
05:23And how we run to this moment
05:26Will not only impact our lives
05:29Our lives
05:31But will impact the lives of our kids
05:35And future generations
05:37And in terms of the climate
05:40It will depend
05:42We can depend on whether or not
05:45The planet Earth survives
05:48That's why we're here today
05:49We're living in a moment
05:55Where a handful of billionaires
05:59Control the economic and political life
06:03Of our country
06:05We're living in a moment
06:08With a president who has no understanding
06:12Or respect for the Constitution of the United States
06:15And let us make no doubt about it
06:22Moving us rapidly toward an authoritarian form of society
06:29And Mr. Trump, we ain't going there
06:36We are living in a moment
06:40We are living in a moment
06:42Where the Republican Party has
06:45To a large degree
06:47Become a cult of the individual
06:50Obeying Trump's every wish
06:54And at a time of massive income and wealth inequality
06:59Right now as we speak
07:01They are plotting about how they can give
07:041.1 trillion in tax breaks to the 1%
07:07And devastate programs that working families need
07:15You know, it's funny
07:17Just yesterday
07:19Our good friend Elon Musk
07:28Mr. Musk sent out a tweet
07:30And in essence he said
07:32You know, Bernie Sanders
07:33Has been talking about the growth of oligarchy
07:37Year after year after year
07:40Well, Elon, you're damn right
07:43That's what I've been talking about
07:46The difference is
07:52I'm no longer talking about how we're moving to oligarchy
07:56I'm talking about how we are living today
08:00In an oligarchic form of society
08:03Three months ago when Trump was inaugurated
08:09Standing right behind him
08:12During his inauguration
08:14Were the three wealthiest people in this country
08:17Mr. Musk, Mr. Bezos, and Mr. Zuckerberg
08:20Mr. Zuckerberg
08:25And right behind them
08:28Were 13 other billionaires
08:31Who Trump had nominated
08:33To head up major federal agencies
08:40And that, brothers and sisters
08:42Is what oligarchy is all about
08:46You know, lately
08:49Given what's happening in America
08:51I've been remembering the history lessons
08:55That I learned when I was in the sixth grade
08:58And I remember, and I think many of you will recall
09:01When you think about your education
09:04You'll remember hearing about Abraham Lincoln
09:07On the fields of Gettysburg
09:10In 1863
09:12And that was just a few days
09:15After 20,000 Union soldiers
09:19Had either died or been wind-wounded
09:22Fighting against the nightmare of slavery
09:25And Lincoln looked out on that field
09:29And this is what he said, and you will all remember it
09:32He said, quote
09:33We hear highly resolve
09:38That these dead shall not have died in vain
09:42That this nation under God
09:45Shall have a new birth of freedom
09:48And that government of the people
09:51By the people
09:53For the people
09:55Shall not perish from the earth
09:57And that is precisely why
10:08We are here today
10:10To make sure that government of, by and for the people
10:14Does not perish
10:16And that we do not become a government
10:19Of the billionaire class
10:21By the billionaire class
10:22And for the billionaire class
10:25The American people do not want the richest guy on earth
10:33Running all over Washington, D.C.
10:37Decimating the Social Security Administration
10:41Making it harder
10:43The richest guy on earth
10:45Making it harder for old people with disabilities
10:48To get the benefits that they paid into
10:52Proposing to lay off 83,000 workers
10:59At the Veterans Administration
11:02Denying the health care that the men and women
11:07Who put their lives on the line to defend us
11:10Deserve
11:12Slashing the Department of Education
11:14Decimating the U.S.A.I.D.
11:19Which, by the way, means that hundreds of thousands, if not millions
11:27Of the most desperate people in this world will die as a result
11:32And when we talk about oligarchy
11:38It is not just economics
11:40I trust that all of you know that you are living under a corrupt
11:46Campaign finance system
11:49Which allows billionaires to buy elections
11:52Don't tell me about democracy
11:57When Musk himself can put
12:00Two hundred and seventy million dollars
12:03To elect Donald Trump
12:04To elect Donald Trump
12:05And then get rewarded with the most important position
12:10In government
12:14But it's not just Musk and Republicans
12:17It's the Democratic Party as well
12:20Their billionaires tell candidates
12:25Don't stand up to the powerful special interest
12:29And too many Democrats are listening to them
12:32And that is why
12:35That is why
12:37If we want to preserve democracy in America
12:39We've got to overturn this disastrous
12:42Citizens United Supreme Court decision
12:45And we've got to move to public funding of elections
12:52In America, one person, one vote, not billionaires buying elections
12:55In America, one person, one vote, not billionaires buying elections
13:02And let me tell you something
13:07About the oligarchs
13:10They are very, very religious people
13:15But their religion is not based on doing unto others
13:22As you would have them do unto you
13:25Their religion is not based on love or justice
13:30Their religion is based on greed, greed, and more greed
13:36All over this country
13:41In Vermont, California, all over this country
13:45We have a serious problem
13:47With drug addiction
13:49With alcoholism
13:51With other forms of addiction
13:52But in my honest opinion
13:55The most serious addiction crisis we face
13:59Is the addiction of the oligarchy toward greed
14:03They got billions and billions of dollars
14:09It's not enough
14:11They need more
14:13And if they have to step on the poor
14:15And the disabled
14:17And working class people
14:19That is what they will do
14:21Unless
14:23We stop them
14:25And we will stop them
14:33But it's not just oligarchy
14:35We are fighting
14:37We're fighting
14:39Okay
14:41EMT
14:48Okay, raise your hand where the problem is
14:50Okay, we got somebody there?
14:52Got it, somebody?
14:54Okay, thank you
15:02But it's not just oligarchy
15:04We are fighting
15:06We're fighting a president
15:08Who undermines our constitution every day
15:10And threatens our freedom of speech and assembly
15:14And whose agents are rounding up innocent people
15:18Off the streets
15:20Putting them in unmarked vans
15:22And throwing them in detention centers
15:25That is what happens in dictatorships
15:32Not democracies
15:35And we're going to stop that outrageous action
15:38On the part of the president
15:40You know, our founding fathers of this country
15:46Were no dummies
15:48They wrote a constitution and established a form of government
15:54With a separation of powers
15:56Remember all reading all about that?
15:58You got a legislative body
16:01Congress
16:03You got an executive branch
16:04President
16:05You got a judiciary
16:06The federal courts
16:08And they wrote that document
16:10Because they had just fought a brutal war
16:13Against the autocratic king of England
16:16And what they understood
16:18As they were forming this new country
16:19That they never wanted to see a nation
16:23Where one person had unlimited power
16:27Well, Trump wants that power
16:32We are not giving it to him
16:33Trump is suing the media
16:43Because they say bad things about him
16:47Oh, how horrible is that?
16:50He has sued ABC, CBS, Meta, the Des Moines Register
16:52His FCC is investigating NPR and PBS
17:02He loves the media when they fawn over him
17:06But he can't take criticism
17:08This from a guy who has made vulgar comments about his opponents
17:13Hey, Mr. President, if you can't take criticism
17:17Get out of politics
17:19That's what democracy is about
17:27Trump is going after the powers of Congress
17:30He is illegally abolishing agencies
17:34That Congress created
17:36He's withholding funding that Congress has appropriated
17:40He is establishing tariffs that he has no legal right to do
17:46But it's not just the media in Congress
17:52That he's trying to intimidate
17:55In an absolutely outrageous and unconstitutional way
17:59He is going after the judiciary
18:02His view
18:04His view is
18:06If a decision comes down from a judge
18:08That you don't like
18:11You try to get rid of that judge
18:13And impeach him or her
18:19He is going after law firms
18:21That have opposed him and his interest in the past
18:26And disgracefully
18:28A number of these law firms have caved in
18:30He is going after universities
18:35He is going after universities
18:41You know, the function of a university
18:44School of Higher Education
18:46Is to pursue the truth
18:48Not to cave in to an authoritarian president
18:52To protect the federal grants they get
18:54But it is not just Trump's and his administration's domestic policy
19:06That we should be concerned about
19:08For the first time in our 250-year history
19:13We have a president who is aligning himself
19:17With dictatorship abroad
19:18No, Mr. Trump
19:24Ukraine did not start that war
19:29Putin and Russia did
19:31We must lead the world in supporting democracies
19:37Not supporting Putin and dictatorships
19:38So let me tell you something else
19:44Trump wants over 8 billion more dollars
19:49To go to Netanyahu's war machine
19:54Israel has a right to defend itself against terrorism
19:58But it does not have a right to go to war against the entire Palestinian people
20:16It does not have the right to kill 50,000 people
20:21Injure over 100,000 and destroy the entire infrastructure
20:26And as bad as that is
20:31As bad as that is
20:34Trump wants to expel
20:36The 2.2 million people in Gaza
20:40In order to create a playground for his billionaire friends
20:49That is beyond insane
20:52And we will never, never let that happen
20:54Let that happen
21:03Brothers and sisters
21:05Not just oligarchy
21:07And authoritarianism
21:09Our job right now
21:11At a time when the very richest people in America
21:14Are becoming phenomenally richer
21:16Our job is to create an economy
21:19That works for all of us
21:21Not just the people on top
21:22The people on top
21:27All right, I'm going to do something radical here
21:29Are you ready?
21:31I'm going to tell the truth
21:33I'm going to talk about what's really going on in America today
21:40And that is we are living with two Americas
21:42With two Americas
21:44One America, the people on top
21:47Have never ever in the history of our country
21:51Had it so good
21:53Today we have more income and wealth inequality
21:57Than we have ever had
21:59The three wealthiest people own more wealth
22:02Than the bottom half of American society
22:04A hundred and seventy million people
22:09The top one percent
22:14One percent owns more wealth than the bottom
22:16Ninety percent
22:18And the CEOs of major corporations
22:21Now earn
22:23Three hundred times
22:25What their workers are making
22:26Is there a medical issue?
22:27All right, we need an EMT there
22:30Raise your hand guys
22:47But it's not just
22:49Income and wealth inequality
22:51We have more concentration of ownership today
22:54Than we have ever had
22:57We have a handful of corporations
23:00Owning sector and sector of our economy
23:04So that is one America
23:06People on top
23:08Doing phenomenally well
23:10Let me tell you about the other America
23:12That you know very, very well
23:14And that is that sixty percent of our people
23:17Are living paycheck to paycheck
23:18Anybody here living paycheck to paycheck?
23:22All right, I grew up
23:24Like Donald Trump
23:25I grew up in a family
23:27That lived paycheck to paycheck
23:29So I know a little bit about that
23:32And the result of living paycheck to paycheck
23:36Is such, if you can believe it
23:38That working class people in America
23:41Die seven years earlier than the rich
23:45All right, gonna ask you a question
23:51Why is that?
23:53All right, you got it
23:55The answer is stress
23:57If you gotta worry every single day
24:00How you gonna feed your kids
24:02How you gonna pay the rents
24:04How you gonna make sure that your car
24:07Doesn't break down so you can get to work
24:09How you gonna afford to provide for your kid
24:12When your kid gets sick and needs to go to a doctor
24:16How you have to work when your schedule is changed everyday
24:20And you have a boss who doesn't care about you
24:23When you live under those conditions
24:26Day after day, year after year
24:28It eats away at your body
24:31It eats away in your mind
24:35We need to create an economy
24:37Where all of our people
24:41Can live out their life expectancy
24:44In the way that they should
24:46And you know why people all over this country are angry?
24:59In fact, some of them end up voting for Trump
25:01Let me tell you something you don't hear much about
25:02In the corporate media
25:05Or in the halls of Congress
25:07Today, if you can believe it
25:09Despite a huge increase in worker productivity
25:14Real inflation accounted for wages
25:18Are lower today
25:20Than they were 52 years ago
25:23So workers are producing more and more
25:28But all of what they produce
25:32All of the benefits are going to the top 1%
25:35And during that same period
25:37We have seen a $75 trillion transfer of wealth
25:41From the bottom 90% to the top 1%
25:45Today in America, half of older workers have nothing in the bank
25:53As they face retirement
25:54And 22% of our seniors are living on $15,000 a year or less
26:04And 800,000 Americans are sleeping out on the streets
26:14Today, as I look at this great crowd
26:17I remember another rally that I attended
26:20I wasn't up here, I was way, way back
26:21And that was in 1963
26:26I was in Washington for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s great I have a dream speech
26:32And the truth is, while many, many problems remain
26:41We should be proud that we have made significant progress in fighting racism
26:47And I can remember
26:50Several decades ago
26:52That in the United States Senate
26:54There were all of two women
26:57Virtually no women governors
26:59Though very few women in the house
27:02Hundreds of women died every year
27:05Because they could not access legal abortions
27:08I can remember
27:15I can remember
27:17Growing up
27:19When young people who were gay
27:21Were ashamed to acknowledge that
27:23And suffered in their silence
27:26And nobody back then would have dreamed
27:30That we would achieve gay marriage in many states in this country
27:40So my point is that we have made and should be proud of
27:44The fact that we have made progress
27:47In a number of enormously important areas
27:50But we should also be conscious
27:54That in perhaps the most important issue
27:59The economic struggle
28:01That so many Americans are now engaged in
28:05We have lost ground
28:09Back in 1944
28:12President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
28:15One of the great presidents in the history of our country
28:16He gave a State of the Union address
28:21And this is what he said
28:24Back in 1944
28:26He said, you know what?
28:28We are a great country
28:29We have a great constitution
28:31We have freedom of speech
28:32Freedom of religion, etc.
28:34But what we need to add to that
28:37Is to understand that economic rights
28:41Are human rights
28:42That if you can't afford to go to a doctor
28:52Doesn't really matter about voting
28:55If you can't afford to feed your kids
28:58Freedom of assembly doesn't matter that much
29:01He said, economic rights are human rights
29:04So today, in the year 2025
29:08We have got to pick up that banner
29:10Economic rights are human rights
29:14Every single person is entitled to that
29:16And this gets to a very fundamental issue
29:27Musk and his friends see you as nothing more than workers
29:31To be disposed of
29:33They got rid of tens of thousands of federal workers
29:35And when information
29:38Artificial information
29:40And robotics comes
29:42They're going to throw you out on the street as well
29:44They don't give a damn about you
29:46They don't give a damn about your kids
29:50And what we have got to do is say, sorry
29:53We are human beings
29:55We are human beings
29:58And we are entitled
30:00We are entitled
30:02We are entitled to certain fundamental economic rights
30:06So no, we are not going to give more tax breaks
30:11To billionaires
30:13We're going to demand that they start paying
30:15Their fair share of taxes
30:16No, we are not going to keep a federal minimum wage
30:26Of $7.25 an hour
30:29We are going to raise that wage to a living wage
30:32No worker in America should live in poverty
30:36End of discussion
30:37And we are going to pass the PRO Act to make sure
30:46That employers
30:48Cannot act illegally when workers are trying to form unions
30:53We are going to grow the trade union movement
30:56In America, we are not going to turn our backs
31:01On our parents and grandparents who helped build this country
31:07We are not going to cut Social Security
31:10We are going to expand Social Security benefits
31:16And by the way, we are going to reestablish
31:19Defined benefit pensions for workers in this America
31:23Instead of making massive cuts to Medicaid
31:32We must do what every other major country on earth does
31:36It ain't radical
31:38Health care is a human right
31:41We are going to guarantee health care to all
31:43Through a Medicare for all
31:48Single payer system
31:49The function of health care is not to make the insurance companies
31:58And the drug companies rich
32:00And we are going to stop paying
32:0310 times more for some prescription drugs
32:06Than the people of other countries
32:08We can lower prescription drugs by 50%
32:10Here in LA, in Burlington, Vermont, and all across this country
32:20We have a major housing crisis
32:23Am I right?
32:25And it's not just homelessness
32:28It's people paying 40, 50, 60% of their limited incomes in housing
32:34Instead of spending a trillion dollars a year on the military
32:37Let's build 5 million units of low-income and affordable housing
32:50Brothers and sisters, we live in a competitive global economy
32:54And if we are going to effectively compete
32:57We need the best educated workforce in the world
33:00It is nothing less than insane and counterproductive
33:12That we have young people leaving higher education
33:1650, 80,000 dollars in debt
33:18We need more doctors
33:20You know what doctors are leaving medical school with?
33:22500,000 dollars in debt
33:23500,000 dollars in debt
33:25Nurses are leaving 100,000 dollars in debt
33:32Education is a human right
33:35From childcare through college
33:37We need sheet metal workers
33:42We need carpenters
33:44We need construction workers
33:46We need apprenticeship programs
33:48We need to make public colleges, universities, and trade schools tuition-free
33:57We need to make public colleges, universities, and trade schools tuition-free
34:05Donald Trump thinks that climate change is a quote-unquote hoax originating in China
34:11This state, California, has gone through enough pain
34:17To know that climate change is not a hoax
34:21It is an existential threat to this state, Vermont, to the whole country, and the whole world
34:28Instead of appeasing the fossil fuel industry
34:33Who are lying and destroying our planet
34:37We're going to transform our energy system
34:40And lead the world into sustainable energy and energy efficiency
34:44And we create millions of good-paying jobs as we do that
34:52Look, I don't have to tell anyone here
34:55That this is a difficult moment in the modern history of our country
35:04We've never gone through anything like this
35:07But this is what I do want to say
35:09Despair is not an option
35:12Giving up and hiding under the covers is not acceptable
35:16The stakes are just too high
35:26And let me tell you
35:28When Donald Trump looks out at this crowd
35:32And they pay attention to this stuff
35:33And Elon Musk does
35:35You are scaring the hell out of them
35:37Because they know what you know and what I know
35:48Is that they are the 1%
35:52We are the 99%
35:57Back in 1857
36:04When abolitionists were working day and night to end the nightmare of slavery
36:12This is what Frederick Douglass
36:15You all remember Frederick Douglass?
36:17Yes!
36:19Very great abolitionist
36:21Listen closely to what he said
36:23Because it is as relevant today
36:26As it was back then in the fight against slavery
36:29This is what he said, quote
36:31Power concedes nothing
36:34Without a demand
36:36It never did
36:38And it never will
36:40Find out just when any people will quietly submit to
36:46And you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong
36:52Which will be imposed upon them
36:55And these will continue
36:57Till they are resisted
37:00With either words or blows or with both
37:03The limits of tyrants are prescribed
37:07By the endurance of those whom they oppress
37:19The oligarchy will concede nothing
37:23They have the wealth
37:26They have the power
37:28They own congress
37:30They own the white house
37:32They own much of the media
37:34But they don't own us
37:37Now I'm not going to tell you that it's going to be easy
37:47It's not
37:49We're going to have to fight them door to door
37:52Workplace to workplace
37:54School to school
37:56We're going to have to educate
37:57We're going to have to mobilize
37:59We're going to have to stand up in a dozen different ways
38:02But from the bottom of my heart
38:04And I've been to every state of this country
38:06I don't care whether you're Republican
38:08Democrat or Independent
38:10The people of this country
38:12Do not want oligarchy
38:14They do not want authoritarianism
38:16And they want a government
38:18That works for all of us
38:20Not just the 1%
38:22Thank you all very much
38:23Thank you all very much
