Gurugram, April 11:
Two people sustained injuries after a large pillar signage collapsed onto a car on the Dwarka Expressway in Gurugram on Friday evening, as strong thunderstorms and gusty winds lashed the Delhi-NCR region, officials said.
According to authorities, the vehicle was crushed under the fallen structure, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Bystanders rushed to their aid and helped extricate them before they were taken to a nearby hospital. The victims, who were reportedly returning home from work, have not yet been identified. Their vehicle was completely damaged in the incident.
The collapse triggered a traffic jam along the expressway, prompting the deployment of police personnel to manage the situation. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirmed that emergency teams were dispatched and the debris was cleared using cranes. “Traffic has since been restored. The cause of the collapse is under investigation,” an NHAI official said.
The storm, which began around 6:30 p.m., led to widespread disruption across major routes including NH-48, the Southern Peripheral Road, Sohna Road Elevated Highway, and the Kundli–Manesar–Palwal Expressway. Numerous reports emerged of hoardings falling and trees being uprooted in areas such as Signature Tower, Sheetla Mata Road, Sector 31, and Sector 21.
In Sector 22, a tree toppled onto two parked cars, while in another incident, an electric pole fell near a Kendriya Vidyalaya on Delhi Road, causing a power outage in nearby localities, including Sector 14.
A Gurugram Police spokesperson commended the traffic police for swiftly clearing fallen trees and debris, ensuring minimal disruption and a quick restoration of vehicular movement.
