00:00Do Your Other Thing
00:02Hi, I'm Jacob Anderson.
00:04You may know me as an actor on HBO's Game of Thrones,
00:07but on this episode of Do Your Other Thing,
00:09Mountain Dew is going to show you what I like to do
00:11when I'm not being a cool warrior.
00:17I grew up in Bristol in the southwest of England.
00:20Acting is something that I do to, like,
00:23get completely away from myself,
00:25whereas music is something that I do
00:27to try and understand myself.
00:30I've got it, wanna be ten against me and Sonic
00:33and nobody telling me I could be more than I am.
00:36Raleigh Ritchie is my band name, pseudonym.
00:39I'm passionate about expressing myself, full stop.
00:42Writing songs has always been a part of my life,
00:45and I feel very lucky that people listen to me.
00:51I'm in the studio today working with Rosie Danvers,
00:53and I'm excited to collaborate with her
00:55and take my single to a whole new level.
00:57I'm a cellist, arranger, orchestrator,
01:00and primarily a collaborator.
01:02I've been a fan of Rosie's
01:04and not really known it for a really long time,
01:06so I asked Rosie to do strings for one of my songs.
01:10I think it would be really great to hear the band
01:13just play it through as you're gonna do it for life,
01:15because it's completely new to us.
01:16Are you good to do that and we're just gonna sit here and listen?
01:19Yeah.
01:20And listen.
01:21Time in a tree is all about connecting with yourself
01:37at a different time in your life.
01:38I think it's definitely playing with the idea of visual storytelling,
01:42and that's what I've always wanted to do since the beginning.
01:44I love what he's saying, I love what he's singing about,
01:46and also I was just really excited because I was like,
01:48this is gonna work really well with strings,
01:50and you know what, it's lovely when I get a song
01:52where I think the strings will really have a voice.
01:55We can work out how we fit into that dynamically,
01:57and, you know, we may have to play a bit more in certain sections
02:01or back off.
02:02That's the thing, isn't it? It's like balance.
02:04When I was a kid, I was like terrified of classical music.
02:07It would bring images into my head that I felt like I couldn't control it.
02:11Like the music was like the same as watching a film or a TV,
02:16and it used to really freak me out.
02:18I adore film music.
02:19Well, I want to bring that out in Jacob's music.
02:21His lyrics are just giving you images.
02:23Do you want to have a listen?
02:24Yeah, I'd love to.
02:33Just seeing the look on people's faces when they hear an orchestra,
02:36play back something that they have written.
02:39It's absolutely bloody amazing.
02:46Woo!
02:47I love that.
02:48That sounds so good.
02:49I would never get bored of that in my life.
02:52Are you gonna sing along?
02:53Yes?
02:54Yeah.
02:55When we play it this time,
02:56I want you to really listen to him singing while you're playing,
02:59and you'll play with even more emotion.
03:01So listen to how kind of vulnerable he sounds.
03:04I want them to feel what Jacob's feeling.
03:07Because I think if you feel something,
03:08then when you play it,
03:10you play it differently.
03:11If you don't play it just be,
03:14I guess Rose are there to break.
03:18I make mistakes like they were...
03:20That sounds beautiful.
03:21That sounds so good.
03:22Rosie adds something to my music that I find hard to describe.
03:26It takes it to another level.
03:28I guess Rose are there to break.
03:31But I make mistakes like they were handed on a plate.
03:36When I try to leave,
03:38sometimes I'm standing in the way.
03:40I'm on the edge of crying all the time,
03:44cause I can't human right.
03:46What a stain.
03:48I think there's something really special about having a full orchestra in the room with you.
03:54The thing I love about collaborating is,
03:57I think it's where the magic happens.
03:59I'm really passionate about creating things that have not been created before.
04:03Maybe Vienna wouldn't wait for me.
04:06I just want time in the tree.
04:11I need a place just for me.
04:15I want what I bring to help and support him and make him,
04:19you know, feel that feeling.
04:21Keep the faith that will just be what you mean.
04:28I've seen things that I never should have seen.
04:33Said too many things I didn't mean.
04:37I hurt myself too many times to count.
04:41I need to let it out.
04:43Then just release.
04:45Been lying to myself too long.
04:49Been trying by myself too long.
04:55Trust is a really difficult thing to give,
04:58but like it's a really rewarding thing.
05:00When you give it to the right people,
05:02I was nervous and I was low confidence.
05:04And then hearing Rosie and her players gave me some of that quality
05:08where these small human things can seem epic.
05:12It gave me some drive to be like,
05:14no, I wrote this song and I want to share it with people.
05:18I need a place just for me.
05:22Somewhere that I could be.
05:25It's not a skill I have, it's a passion that I have.
05:27When you push yourself to the next level,
05:29you can create something new.
05:30If you're passionate about something, go for it.
05:34Try it.
05:35Do what you love and fill your life
05:37with as much of what you love as you possibly can.
05:42Because there are those who don't and those who do.
05:45Let's do.
