It’s been a volatile few days for the stock market since President Donald Trump’s April 2 announcement of 10% baseline tariffs on all imported goods, as well as additional import taxes on 60 countries. On April 9, Trump went on to pause most of his tariffs for three months, while keeping in place the 10% baseline and significantly increasing the tax on imports from China.

00:11This is why, though, Trump is potentially to be investigated for insider trading.
00:15Congress passed the Stock Act of 2012, which made it illegal for Congress members or anyone in the executive branch to take part in insider trading.
00:23President Trump is now being accused of it by certain lawmakers after the timing of Trump's announcement that he's stalling his massive swath of tariffs.
00:30Since mere hours before he made his announcement, Trump wrote on his social media platform that this is a great time to buy, signing off with DJT, both Trump's initials and the ticker for his media company, Trump Media.
00:42Senator Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, called on Wednesday for an investigation into Trump's great time to buy post, flagging it as a potential proof of insider trading or stock market manipulation.
00:52Other lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Chris Murphy, have also come out with their own suspicions about the timing of the post and potential corruption within Congress.
01:02Usually, these kinds of allegations would be investigated by congressional committees or the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
01:08But none of the experts I spoke to can remember another time that a president has been accused of insider trading, and such a high-profile instance would likely have different protocol.
01:16Schiff, in Democrats as a whole, are in the minority, though.
01:19And if Schiff chooses to individually investigate his claims of insider trading, it would lack the subpoena power to get information on exactly who knew what in the White House.
