AccuWeather's Ali Reid shares some important tips to keep you safe while hiking this spring.
Transcript
00:00The fresh air, the blooming trees and longer days are calling hikers back to the trails.
00:06We start to see an uptick in visitors around the end of March as spring starts to reveal itself.
00:11And then through the month of April, that really starts to pick up.
00:15That's when National Park Rangers say injuries, rescues and preventable mistakes start to rise.
00:21Before you go, you need a plan.
00:23The best hikes, the safest hikes out there, begin at home, in your house, before you ever even leave.
00:30Start by checking the weather, not just where you live, but where you're heading.
00:35Spring conditions can shift quickly.
00:37Always pack extra layers and extra water.
00:40Bring plenty of water, and if you think you have plenty of water, fill up two extra bottles and pack those as well,
00:47because staying hydrated is really, really important.
00:50Time your hike and don't start too late.
00:53Trails can look very different in the late afternoon, and you don't want to get caught out after dark.
00:58And don't forget, there's more than just scenic views along the trail.
01:02One of the biggest things that people need to be aware of when they're out in the woods as far as wildlife goes
01:08is actually one of the smallest organisms that we have, ticks.
01:13Whether you're a beginner or seasoned hiker, know your physical limits and stay alert.
01:18Well, spring is a time for getting out, but spring is also a time when we see injuries.
01:23So we want to make sure that people are paying attention to their fitness levels.
01:26Make sure that you watch your step, watch the time, and enjoy the views.
01:32Because a little planning goes a long way when it comes to staying safe on your hiking adventure.
01:37For AccuWeather, I'm Allie Reed.
