00:00When you're when your home life is so weird, you kind of don't want people to see a lot of it
00:07So you kind of you know, you just let people see a little bit of it. Please welcome to the show Chester Bennington
00:12I
00:13Drive myself nuts. There's a lot of things that happened to me as a young person life is so weird
00:18I feel like I've got it like all my stuff together
00:21And then there are periods of time where I'm just like I am such a failure for me
00:25It's like I can live with life on life's terms and not want to get out of it between my ears
00:29That is a bad neighborhood. I should not be in there alone unless you've walked in those shoes
00:34You don't understand the pain
00:36The weight of carrying that along. It's crazy in here. What do I have to do? How do I win?
00:56I mean look how many people love that
00:59Lincoln Park TV
01:00Lincoln Park
01:01Dominated for three Grammys including Best New Artist and Best Rock Album
01:05Music should be your life. You need to live it, eat it, sleep it, wake up
01:09And the only way you're ever even going to have a chance to make it in this business
01:12Is if you're willing to sacrifice everything to achieve your goal
01:16Chester Charles Bennington was born on March 20th 1976
01:24The son of a mother who worked as a nurse and a father who worked as a police detective
01:28Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona in the late 70s proved difficult for Chester
01:33Who often got into trouble with drugs as a means of coping with feeling like an outsider
01:37We don't relate
01:39Linkin Park or myself with alcoholism or drug addiction or anything like that
01:45You know, but that's that's a part of my life and that's been a part of my life
01:48Since I was a very young boy
01:49I started using drugs when I was 11
01:51I was exposed to it really really young
01:53Whether it's substances or whether it's behavior or whether it's like depressive stuff
01:58Or whatever it is like if I'm not like actively like getting out of myself
02:02And being with other people like being a dad being a husband being a bandmate like being a friend
02:07Helping someone out like if I'm not if I'm out of myself, I'm great
02:11If I'm inside all the time, I'm I'm horrible. I'm a mess
02:14And there was a lot of things that happened to me
02:17As a young person that were really difficult to deal with and
02:23After his parents divorced Chester works odd jobs in arizona including a burger king and it's safe to say that Chester felt lost
02:31But it wouldn't be long before Chester would find what he was searching for music is probably what kept me alive
02:41I love from your friends and family I think that music is probably the reason why I still am here
02:58Because that is how I get out a lot of the stuff that's going on inside
03:03And that's how I kind of work through a lot of things I reflect on my life I reflect on how I feel
03:09And I get to talk about it
03:151998 a local band named zero are holding auditions for a new vocalist
03:21They want somebody who can complement the mc of the group and this proved to be a difficult task and the band were close to giving up
03:28We um we went through a period where we kind of didn't know what we wanted to do with the band like a singer
03:34we had been playing with was transitioning out and we didn't know if we wanted to if we wanted to continue
03:39The band were desperate but so was Chester this was his chance to finally move to la and pursue his dream
03:46This is gonna this is gonna work three day period got the songs recorded my stuff and then a few days later
03:51I was uh in la um from arizona I was living in phoenix I came out and the rest is kind of history
03:58And with the final piece of the puzzle zero went through numerous other changes
04:04What's up? Lincoln park 2000
04:07Hey you guys know you spun Lincoln right?
04:09Yo what's up? LPU in the hizzy
04:12The band spent the next year playing to the ever-growing crowds across the united states
04:16who couldn't wait for a taste of the band's fresh new metal sound
04:21Life was good
04:23Infused the band with new drive to bring their music to the masses
04:26Lincoln park is individual this evening
04:29Make some great
04:30WOOOOOOH
04:31Lincoln park did that
04:34But just as everything seemed to be going their way and despite the love for the band
04:39The record labels had a problem
04:41There wasn't a lot of bands that were that were already mixing different styles of hip-hop or harder rock alternative rock
04:46It's amazing that that record even got made
04:48Chester came out to la just like having started in the band and he was like kind of living out of his car and deciding
04:56Do I want to be in this band?
04:57The most common thing we heard was it's great like we love what you're doing, but we're gonna have to pass
05:02Everyone turned their backs and walked away and we thought you know
05:05We were told you got your one chance and it's over to me
05:08And then we got in the studio and like the people were like that we were working with were saying
05:13You know we wanted you to change this and change that
05:16This guy has this gimmick where he wears a red hat and you guys need a gimmick for us
05:20We were just like come on man like we had to fight for that thing man
05:23Like it was like it got ugly at some points
05:26And it was just like this is what this is gonna be like
05:29Fuck this
05:31To kick a shoe off and that was one of the gimmicks so they suggest like just every every show like you could kick shoes off
05:37And that's your thing
05:38Or like Joe in a fucking chemistry set with beakers
05:42He could be the
05:43I'm just like I'm looking at these people going
05:46When are you going to shut the fuck up and leave?
05:49Disheartened by the prospect of changing their sound
05:52Lincoln Park stood their ground and the risk would pay off
05:56Linkin Park boasts the number one selling album of 2001
06:01Hybrid Theory has remained on the charts for well over a year after digging at an impressive number 16
06:07The board goes to Linkin Park
06:08Oh my goodness, Linkin Park
06:10Linkin Park
06:12Hybrid Theory sold 50,000 copies in its first week
06:17I was shooting pretty high when I said you know I wanted to sell 8,000 copies in a week
06:20I thought that would be like something really extraordinary to do
06:22It's safe to say that Hybrid Theory resonated with a wider audience almost immediately
06:27But like anything celebrated there were plenty of critics
06:30People respond so in such a polarized way to whatever we do
06:34Like it kind of doesn't matter what style it is
06:37Like people either loved it or like they hated it
06:39Hybrid Theory's heartfelt lyrics struck a chord with fans
06:42We could relate to Chester's painful past
06:44We got deeper into that first record
06:46Like people started realizing
06:47Oh there's something different about this
06:49Like I think I kind of like
06:50Every time you look at somebody else when you're a kid
06:53And you go man I wish I had their parents
06:54Or I wish I had their life
06:56You get to know them
06:56You find out a lot of times
06:58Unfortunately it's really similar
07:00It's how I use my past and the good ways and the bad ways to write
07:03Lears
07:10The next two years saw Linkin Park play over 300 shows
07:14All over the world
07:16That works out at nearly one show every other day
07:19How does a young kid from the outskirts of Arizona end up fronting one of the biggest new bands on the planet?
07:25Talent
07:26Chester's light was burning bright
07:28A flame that had been sparked by the pain of his adolescence
07:32But what was happening to that pain now?
07:33Now that Chester had the catharsis of the band's music
07:37Had that pain gone away?
07:38I think for me um the success of the band was never really the thing that was the problem
07:45I see the one dude who's just like I hate you
07:48But
07:48And I'm like why all my attention goes to that one little flaw
07:54Yeah
07:54You know and like there's all this great stuff going on and like I'm not even paying attention to all the great stuff
07:59I think a lot of
07:59I mean a lot of my stuff I was carrying around for a long time
08:02And then it was also like the person the relationship between my ex-wife and I at the time
08:07Really played a huge role in kind of how I viewed the world and kind of how I
08:11I secluded myself in a lot of ways
08:13I drive myself nuts like actually thinking that like all these are real problems
08:17Like all the stuff that's going on in here is actually just I'm doing this to myself
08:21Why aren't you liking this and what do I have to do? How do I how do I win?
08:25Yeah
08:26When you when you can step back and look at something like you're actually elevating yourself consciously like you're you're enlightened at that point
08:32Right
08:32And so this is that moment of enlightenment where you go, you know
08:35I could do something about this and by doing it
08:37I can move forward and get unstuck from this and I can it's like I can live with life on life's terms
08:41Like I can experience the whole spectrum of humanity and not want to get out of it
08:47Whether it's happiness sadness or whatever
08:49How do I win if I'm out of myself? I'm great
08:56They must be concerned about you guys when you think what's gonna happen when we stop
08:59Everybody knew how much pain and frustration went into making hybrid theory
09:02And so now the challenge was putting in that much work into the next record
09:06You might not have heard of this particular band, but ladies and gentlemen, let's see if you have
09:11Please welcome Lincoln Park
09:13I had a joke that since the first record did so well, we were going to do everything the same
09:18Jimmy Hendrix did a record here 30 years after he died
09:21That's how cool this place is
09:23When we wrote hybrid theory, we were still pretty young
09:27We were in a completely different mind frame at that point
09:30Like writing stuff about just real life
09:33Real life emotions just stuff that happens to people every day
09:36What did we do today, Chester?
09:38Today, kids, we rewrote the end of a song for the 97th time
09:44Our perspective has changed
09:45We've been able to tour around the world and our experiences were different
09:49A lot of the feelings that were coming out lyrically were from
09:53You know, what it was like going through touring and being away from people that we love
09:58And kind of the hardships of that, but there was still a lot of success
10:02So there was a lot of optimism, I think, in the music and also in the lyrics
10:05And we also got to experiment a lot
10:07Getting towards the end of our recording, we knew we had our deadline
10:10And basically the unthinkable happened
10:13Getting sick while you're recording a record is kind of something that you
10:17You kind of really dread
10:18It forced Chester to be finishing his vocals while the rest of the record was actually being mixed
10:23Which is a big no-no
10:24Been sick for five weeks
10:26Our album would very likely not have come out until six months later
10:31Or those songs would have just been trashed
10:35The happy end of the story was that it turned out great
10:37There's always like those kind of obstacles that come up in the recording or touring process
10:41And there's, you know, we found there's always a way to kind of work around that
10:44European tour
10:46Thank you very much Manchester
10:49For letting me see you in the fucking best fucking tour of three bands
10:53You guys are fucking amazing
10:57If I'm out of myself, I'm great
11:17If I'm inside all the time, I'm horrible, I'm a mess
11:20And that's why we keep the tape rolling
11:27These kids are going to be freaking out
11:29It's going to be great
11:30We didn't tell any of our kids like what it is
11:31What did you tell, what was the communication to your, to your fans
11:35I don't know what, I ain't talking to no one
11:37Because I know our fans, we basically just told them
11:40It's a show, it's small
11:41By the way, what else do you listen to?
11:43We gave out some passes based on their answers
11:45Put down my other favorite artist is Jay-Z
11:47Then they got a call
11:48So MTV had reached out to Jay, they said we want to do this mash-up series
11:52We want to do a show
11:53Like multiple episodes of different groups mashing stuff up
11:56Will you guys be our first episode?
11:58And I said we were like, yeah
11:59The first thing we said to each other was
12:00I'm not trying to be Linkin Park
12:02And you're not trying to be Jay-Z
12:03We're just here to, you know
12:04I'll be, I'll bring what I do to the table
12:06Y'all bring what y'all do to the table
12:08And we, we mix it
12:09And we just uncompromise and have fun with it
12:11Since it, Jay had already approved it
12:13And he, and they said who do you want to do it with
12:15And he said Linkin Park
12:16We were all set to, to do it
12:18I made three of the tracks
12:19And I sent them to him as my response
12:22And his, and his response back was
12:24Oh, shit!
12:26Like he was, he loved it
12:27It was all good
12:27Happened
12:28I don't know how these, I don't know how I got tricked into doing all this work
12:31You know, these things just turned into real things
12:34It turned into a show
12:35It was supposed to be a show for MTV
12:37Which when we got in the studio
12:38I started doing the lyrics over
12:40And we started doing all our things over
12:42And the music
12:42It turned into something more than a show
12:44And I'm not going to fight it
12:45I'm not, I'm not going to say
12:46I'm going to be tired of
12:47You're not doing nothing
12:48What's for?
12:49I mean, it's beautiful
12:50It's beautiful music
12:51And I want the world to see it
13:14If I'm inside all the time
13:23I'm doing this to myself
13:24Because you've been, you know, working constantly on the success
13:27On making Linkin Park a success
13:29I'm more comfortable when there's a lot to be expected
13:32I want to like be in the mix
13:33Have the pressure
13:34There's a lot of commercial pressure that I think people try and put on us
13:37Or think that is there and it kind of is there in a way
13:40There's got to be a time when you actually have to go back home
13:42And do something to put down some roots
13:44Do you know what I mean?
13:44I've been married for five years
13:47And I've been on the road for almost two of those years
13:50That sucks to me
13:51It's the price we pay for the games we play
13:52You know what I mean?
13:53There's a sacrifice in every situation
13:55Music should be your life, period
13:57You need to live it
13:58You need to eat it
13:59Sleep it
14:00Wake up
14:00And the only way you're ever even going to have a chance to make it in this business
14:04Is if you're willing to sacrifice everything to achieve your goal
14:10I think everybody likes the idea of taking something that you're familiar with
14:29And turning it into something that you're not as familiar with
14:32When we initially started to think about making this record
14:35In our minds we wanted to try something new
14:37Waiting to come out and be dusted off and to be reinvented
14:40As more than meets the eye
14:41And that more than meets the eye could mean more than just the robots
14:45More than meets the eye could mean something about the human character
14:47Try and re-develop the sound of the band from every aspect
14:54Which is kind of a scary thought
14:55The band's change of direction would secure them a spot on the Transformers soundtrack
15:00And they received significant airtime all over the world
15:03The album's theme of time and change were clearly a sign of the times
15:07We were looking back
15:08It was easy for us to replicate
15:09It was easy for other bands to replicate
15:11And we just needed to move on
15:12Told the guys about the idea of the Doomsday Clock thing
15:14And applying that to kind of like how the band has changed from you know
15:18What we used to be like to like what we've become
15:21And the risk that that's that that's involving
15:24The last song we finished
15:26Um this is a song called What I've Done
15:28To me that song encompasses what the album is
15:31It's kind of a little bit of a link from from the previous stuff we've done into this
15:36Lyrically it's it's it's about like recognizing the faults of the past
15:40And trying to move on with with the future
15:42And that's what this album's about
15:44Chester had remarried his youngest children were growing up
15:47And he was expecting his first child with Talinda
15:50And as their sound was evolving it seemed there was nothing the band couldn't do
15:54Huge fan of Chris to be able to do this it's like this is like we're blessed
15:58It's it it means a lot to us that the people are so passionate about our music
16:02How are you Leo Chester?
16:04Hey Brad how are you?
16:05After the success of Minutes to Midnight the band would go on to push their own boundaries even further
16:10That song took us into a different place
16:14And over the course of the next five years the band would produce three more albums
16:18People respond so in such a polarized way to whatever we do we've always been like
16:27Too hard rock for pop and too pop for hard rock
16:29We kind of have been a band that that like represents how I feel like I'm always just kind of like a little bit off
16:36What Chester Bennington was kind of saying is why are we still talking about hybrid theory?
16:41Why are we still being held to that standard even though that record came out practically 20 years ago?
16:47Because they don't some of them are pretty good
16:49But why are we still talking about hybrid theory?
16:51Obviously they've shown us
16:53And they just said they really forced them
16:56As though they oversimplify the formula a little bit
16:59And then they fell in love with it
17:01And then the people that hated it like still to this day like hate us
17:04Like they don't like just dislike us like they like literally hate the band which is hilarious
17:08Only, it wasn't hilarious.
17:11Chester would go on to vent his frustrations of the album's negative response in multiple
17:15written interviews.
17:16To have something you've poured your heart into torn apart by your own fans was clearly
17:21taking its toll, but they would return to their rock roots on their next album, The
17:25Hunting Party.
17:26It I won't let go of, and then it set me on fire.
17:29That's a great story, I like that.
17:33I want to walk away from a song and feel like I cannot get it out of, it's like a 22 round
17:39bouncing around in my head.
17:41And that's what I want from all of our songs, from this record, because I feel like if we
17:47have a record that's stacked with songs that are inspired, like you said, when it's over
17:52it's in your head, that to me gives us a better shot at having a chance to reach people who
18:00aren't necessarily searching for us, and that's what I want.
18:06I want to make a record that makes our fans happy, of course.
18:11Most important.
18:12There's a reason why all six of us voted for those tracks, because they're amazing songs.
18:18There's a reason why all of us love One More Light, and that's because it makes you want
18:23to fucking cry.
18:25That's why that song is great.
18:26It's fucking hard to listen to.
18:27It seems that every year of my life is a rough year, it just depends on how I look
18:33at it at the end of the day.
18:38This morning, the music world is remembering rock pioneer, Chris Cornell.
18:43Cornell died unexpectedly late last night, he was in Detroit and he was 52 years old.
18:47We were going to come out and play heavy first, but in light of our dear friend Chris Cornell
18:53passing away, we decided to play our song, One More Light, in honor of him to start this
19:00off.
19:01We love you, Chris.
19:03I have a scary question for you guys, and I want to get into breaking down the actual title,
19:11One More Light.
19:13There's a finality to it, right?
19:18I'm like, are they trying to tell us something, or is this the last light?
19:22The last light.
19:23The last album.
19:24We're giving up, guys.
19:25Lucky number seven.
19:26Rock fans all over are remembering the life and career of music icon Chester Bennington today.
19:31His body was found at his house in LA County on Thursday morning local time, who died on
19:36what would have been the 53rd birthday of his late friend and Soundgarden vocalist Chris
19:43Cornell, who committed suicide two months ago.
19:46The music world lost the legend in Lincoln Park front man Chester Bennington.
19:51Yeah.
19:52Did you know him?
19:53He was a good friend of mine.
19:54He fought what a lot of us fight, which is that serious depression, that heavy depression.
20:02I'm just glad I got the time that I had with him, you know?
20:04He was a sweetheart of a guy.
20:06He was amazing.
20:07A young man by the name of Chester Bennington, mental health is a real issue.
20:12You never know what they're going through.
20:14Just call them up sometimes, you know, somebody you ain't speak to, your aunt, your cousin.
20:18You're like, hey, how you doing?
20:19Everything good?
20:20You are not alone.
20:21Life is fucking hard.
20:23And all of us, we have terrible beasts and demons and vices that we battle daily.
20:30All of us do.
20:31And Chester, we loved you.
20:34You will be missed.
20:35And I am so sorry that you felt like you had to leave this way.
20:43One thing that can't be defeated is love, right?
20:46You can conquer hate by ignoring it.
20:50You can destroy it by loving the person next to you.
20:54I think for a lot of people, I think like if you're successful, like all of a sudden, like you get like a green, like you get like some card in the mail that says like you're going to be totally satisfied and happy for the rest of your life.
21:02It doesn't happen like that.
21:04Like what goes on inside my head is always been that's always been this way for me.
21:08Look at the person standing next to you and just tell them that you love them.
21:11And you are happy that they're here with you tonight, having a good time, listening to music, celebrating life.
21:19We don't care what you look like.
21:21We don't care where you come from.
21:24We don't care what you believe in.
21:25We love every single one of you out there.
21:27And nothing will ever change that.
21:36With that said, let's sing some songs together.
21:40But all of the people here tonight and all of the men that you healed through your music and you reminded all of us that we were not alone through all of us.
21:57We will carry on and your music and your message and your voice will live on forever.
22:02We are애y people outside the studio.
22:24Last they've got who's a rock superstar in the house, baby.
22:26We got great for the others as well.
22:28We love you as is!
22:30We have free for the others!
