Dans un petit hôtel de Bangkok, Richard, un jeune routard américain, fait la connaissance d'Etienne et Françoise, un couple de Français. Peu après, il rencontre un certain Daffy, un illuminé qui aurait passé plusieurs années sur une île paradisiaque. Au petit matin, Richard retrouve le corps sans vie de Daffy ainsi qu'une carte de la fameuse île. Intrigué par le récit que Daffy lui a fait la veille et le mystère qui plane sur cet éden insulaire, Richard persuade Etienne et Françoise de se mettre, avec lui, en quête de ce paradis. Après bien des difficultés, le trio découvre enfin la terre promise, mais ne tarde pas à déchanter...
