00:04the event was renamed the New York Pro.
00:07The event winners went on to have very successful careers,
00:10many of them launching their pro careers at this event.
00:14In 1987,
00:16a young bodybuilder named Gary Stridem

00:22Gary earned his pro status
00:24by winning the overall title
00:26at the 1986 NPC National Championships.
00:30Gary had to defeat a very deep lineup of bodybuilders,
00:34which included Matt Mendenhall,
00:36who placed second,
00:38behind Gary Stridem in the men's heavyweight category.
00:41Gary would only focus on one event in 1987,
00:45and that would be the Night of the Champions.

00:51had an incredible lineup of bodybuilders.
00:5524 of the world's best bodybuilders arrived in New York
00:59to compete at this prestigious event.
01:02Gary was the new guy on the scene,
01:04and the majority of veteran bodybuilders
01:06had no idea who this kid was.
01:09From the moment Gary stepped on stage,
01:11all eyes would be on him.
01:13Gary presented a fantastic physique
01:16that had the perfect balance of size and symmetry.
01:19It was not an easy task for the South African bodybuilder.
01:23Breathing down his neck were Mike Ashley, Ron Love, Robbie Robinson,
01:28Bertle Fox, and Steve Brisbois, to name a few.
01:31After an intense battle, Gary Stridem would emerge the winner,
01:36with Mike Ashley placing a close second and Ron Love had to settle for third.
01:42During his pro career, Gary would go on to win four IFBB Pro events
01:47and was the WBF champion in 1991.

21:48But to be the best takes a lot of hard work and Shane knows exactly what to do, especially in the gym.
22:55But Shane also weighs importance on his mental preparation and attitude.
23:01And with the great mental awareness that he possesses, not to mention his physique, Shane DeMora is bound to have a great professional bodybuilding career.
23:09And there he is, the 20-year-old sensation, Shane DeMora.
23:14And it used to be, you think you're serious about bodybuilding, at least at this level until maybe 23, 24.
23:20This man has set new standards for teenagers.
23:22He won the, not only the teenage, but the junior, and the overall, his class in the nationals in the last year has really come on strong in the pros now.
23:32At 5'3, 172 pounds, this man looks so much bigger.
23:38And I guess that's because, as you mentioned, his great genetics, but as well as his overall bodybuilding and his training is really, his body is such a beautiful flow.
23:45And I know you're a great fan of symmetry, and this man certainly has a lot of it.
23:49Well, bodybuilding is all about illusion.
23:51It's the illusion that you strike on stage that matters.
23:55And right now, a very happy Shane DeMora, a man who certainly, in years to come, will be a man to watch.
24:01And right now, he is the guy to watch.
24:045'3, 170 pounds, as you mentioned, down in St. Petersburg.
24:09He's the guy who said, you can fool yourself in the gym, but you can't fool the judges come competition time.
24:14And he's not fooling anyone.
24:15He looks fantastic.
24:19Shane DeMora leaves the stage.
24:26He yells at 1,500 fans in the big up.
24:30Another guy, I guess you'd say, kind of small bomb.
24:33P.C. Griswold, Canada, 5'3.
24:36A little lighter than Shane, about 160, 162.
24:40But he has a lot going for me as far as symmetry, and he looks fantastic.
24:45As you said, he moves as he looks bigger than he is.
24:47Exactly.
24:48Steve is the lightweight world champion from last year, and has a tremendous, nice, symmetrical physique.
24:57It doesn't tell me sometimes that some of these shorter guys get too muscular, and they maybe look kind of blocky.
25:03They have to really guard it inside, I would think.
25:05Well, any bodybuilder has to develop their physique in regards to their height and their genetic frame as well.
25:10Out of Canada, Steve Brizbois following Shane DeMora.
25:17Those guys can look themselves, actually, each other in the eye back in the backstage as he gives a big smile to the 1,500 fans on hand.
25:26As we said, a very vocal crowd, a knowledgeable crowd here in the Big Apple Box.
25:31Yeah, they know what they want, and they certainly cheer for it.
25:35And they're getting it tonight, some great competition.
25:40The music's so important for any bodybuilder.
25:43As far as your selection, what do you lean toward as far as when you pose?
25:49I lean toward a modern classic and usually present a very flowing type of pose routine.
25:56A lot of people like a harder rock or a peep that's going to get the audience more involved and more upbeat.
26:07Next up, Tom Toilager, of course, a local favorite as well.
26:12He pretty much runs onto the stage.
26:14The crowd loves this guy.
26:16He looks big, a little bigger than the last two guys.
26:19Tell us about Tom.
26:20Here's a guy that looks extremely hard and big.
26:23Any way you could critique him for the judge if you were sitting in front.
26:27Tom has a nice symmetrical physique.
26:29He's, this last year, light heavyweight national champion.
26:34Just opened a gym on Long Island in New York, and I think he's going to do real well here.
26:41You mentioned a lot of local guys.
26:43You mentioned Mike Ashley and Paul.
26:45There's some great local talent here at the Light of Champions,
26:49and fans, and the fans are going to turn on to Tom and his routine here.

30:37We talk about big, he's been big before big was in, Bob.
30:41Well Scott has a tremendously huge physique, he's wide shoulders, small narrow waist and hips,
30:49and really represents what bodybuilding is all about.
30:52Here's a guy that isn't as young as some of the competitors, but as you mentioned before,
30:58you kind of gain knowledge, you learn more about your physique, you know how to work certain body parts.
31:03Here's a man that doesn't appear to have a visible face, but certainly the crowd loves him.
31:11The crowd-pleasing Scott Wilson leaves the stage always.
31:15A big crowd favorite no matter where he poses.
31:18Up next, another crowd favorite coming on stage.
31:21They call him the Black Prince, Robbie Robinson.
31:25He dominated bodybuilding circles in the late 70s, early 80s.
31:28He's now back on top of his sport, saying he looks and feels as good as he ever has.
31:34Bobby, you have kind of a special place in your heart for this guy.
31:36Well, Robbie was a hero of mine when I was beginning the sport of bodybuilding when I was in high school,
31:42and he looks tremendous tonight.
31:45You mentioned, you know, Robbie's often been called Mr. Arms.
31:48They often really denote his arm development in some magazines.
31:53Sometimes when you work that body part so much that other parts of your body kind of lack behind it.
31:57Well, Robbie has tremendous arm development, but I would say his physique is very balanced,
32:02which is the ideal of bodybuilding, to bring all of the body parts into a coordinated balance.
32:08We had a chance to talk with Robbie Robinson earlier today,
32:11and his story about how he got involved in bodybuilding is kind of unique.
32:14He actually got involved as being a Vietnam vet.
32:18I think after I came back from Vietnam, I was really motivated to, like, train,
32:22because a lot of the guys, like, got out there with psychiatrists, and they used that as their therapy.
32:26And so I used bodybuilding as my therapy.
32:29It kept me motivated and stimulated to train as hard as possible and win all the children as much as I possibly could.
32:34Being in the sport for so long, do you think that helps your chances of winning, or do you think it hurts you?
32:39Do you think they're looking for new faces, or do you think they kind of are partial to the oldies but goodies?
32:46No, I think I'm probably one of the old veterans that's, like, really been in there and been able to stay,
32:50and come back and compete and play, so win.
32:53And I still think they're looking for the old guys to come back,
32:56because that's really where the real quality muscle is.
32:59The younger guys are, like, up and coming, or they're winning, or they're placing and winning the championships,
33:05but really what makes the sport of the older guys.
33:09We'll be right back with more of the ninth annual Night of Champions of New York City,
33:13including some guys you don't want to miss, Gary Stridham and Tony Pearson.
33:16Welcome back to the ninth annual Night of Champions.
33:22You're going to lay along with Bob Harris, getting ready for some more competition.
33:26We'll take a look at a man that, Gary Stridham, who we talk about seeing more bursting onto the scene
33:31as kind of a big little guy, but this guy is big, big, and bigger.
33:36Gary's a huge athlete, and he's made tremendous strides since his win of the Nationals this last year.
33:42Coming in, making his pro debut, he's going to do some damage.
33:46on the pro circuit over the next few years.
33:48We had a chance to check in on Gary and his wife, Elise.
33:51That's right.
33:52In the bodybuilding world, the name Gary Stridham conjures up one word, massive.
33:58And this broad-shouldered South African native has set standards in bodybuilding
34:01that others could only dream of.
34:03I'm going to come in over 250 at the Night of the Champions.
34:07A lot of people think I'm going to be fast,
34:09but it's just a matter of fine-tuning my diet that I had for the Nationals
34:14and coming with my muscles much fuller
34:18and obviously being more dominant on stage, being over 250.
34:23But this mammoth of a man wasn't always this big.
34:26I came to this country six years ago.
34:29I was 175 pounds.
34:32And I've been up to 285, 290.
34:37And I've built this body purely on using brain power, not any muscles.
34:45Gary has focused his goals both mentally and physically,
34:48making the necessary changes in the process.
34:50And it comes in time.
34:52You can't rush it.
34:53You're going to progressively improve.
34:55You can't make drastic changes too fast
34:59because you're pushing too hard and you end up injuring yourself.
35:03So there's a lot of safety involved.
35:04And these changes have helped him put his overall bodybuilding lifestyle together.
35:09And I think with me, it's putting all those things together,
35:12diet, nutrition, going to the gym, training, dedication, total dedication.
35:17But even total dedication was not enough for Gary
35:21until he met his wife, Elise, who now plays a large role in his career.
35:26She has now become more than a ladies coordinator.
35:29She's now my life coordinator.
35:31She organizes all the food and nutrition.
35:35She handles all my business negotiations.
35:39At first, though, Elise had to find out what bodybuilding and Gary were really all about.
35:43And I started looking at the magazines with him and learning what he is all about.
35:48And it was even more of a challenge to me working with professional athletes
35:56to get in with the sport to where they are extremists.
36:02But what it's really about when it comes down to contest time
36:05is that Gary Stridum has to go it alone.
36:07And in this, he is confident.
36:08I'm doing everything that I can possibly do to win.
36:13I'm so focused on my diet and my training,
36:17on getting my rest and presentation, tanning,
36:22that I'm only doing my best.
36:25And whatever the results, I'm going to be happy with.
36:29Here he is, Mr. Big, Gary Stridum, 6'1", 250 pounds.
36:34Green competition comes in about 270 or thereabouts.
36:39I'm saying there's no such thing as too big in bodybuilding.
36:42This man is not only big, but tremendously defined in everything he's before.
36:46He has nice shapes to his physique.
36:48The shoulders are real round, fullness to the chest.
36:51He has great abs.
36:54I have a couple of years in bodybuilding.
36:56There's been one man who was really first on the scene convicted for greatness.
37:00This is the hottest man in bodybuilding right now, Gary Stridum.
37:04He loves the pose.
37:05He works so hard as him.
37:07And one thing, as you see, you can shake his quadricep right there.
37:10Big guys have trouble putting on mass on their legs,
37:12but this guy is just huge, huge, huge legs.
37:14Gary's got tremendous thigh development.
37:18As you see, he loves the crowd, and they love him.
37:201,500 strong here.
37:22He's giving them their money's worth and then some.
37:25Gary Stridum, the national champion last year down in Atlanta.
37:29The crowd going crazy is Stridum, giving them just a little bit extra
37:38before he leaves the stage.
37:39Certainly one of the favorites.
37:49Speaking of crowd favorites, and certainly one of the favorites are the ladies.
37:52They call him Michael Jackson with muscles.
37:54Look at a tremendous blast development in the back.
37:56A great back, Tony Pearson, who's made his mark in bodybuilding for years,
38:00but certainly a man who acted as better when he was a woman, by himself.
38:04The world-mixed pair is, you know, five times champion, Tony Pearson.
38:07Yeah, but don't take for granted the tremendous V-tapel that Tony has.
38:11And look at that vacuum, the ribcage pulled up inside,
38:14punching down into the environment.
38:16You see Tony compete so much.
38:17He's in so many competitions.
38:18How hard is it to stay as hard as he looks all the time in maybe 10, 12 competitions a year?
38:24And how tough is it?
38:25Well, Tony is as close to condition as possible.
38:27And today's modern professional really can keep their body fat down as low as possible most of the year round.
38:35The days of bulking up and cutting down are pretty much long gone.
38:39We talked about his upper body development.
38:42Are his legs up so far or do you feel maybe there's a weakness for Tony that might be?
38:47Well, Tony has a very nice thigh development.
38:51He has a slight weakness through the calf, but his other body parts tend to balance that out.
38:59Theatrically speaking, this guy puts on his good show posing as anybody around.
39:03He's a real crowd favorite.
39:05Loves the music and turns on the crowd.
39:07They love to see guys like this and John Brown come out and they really do it up big.
39:11And he'll get around and they really do it up to you in a pool.
39:14And it's so important.
39:15It's amazing.
39:17You can reach out when you enjoy the Gonzaga Raleigh-Pusлиzeeks rather than John Brown's49 on like
