HOMBRE MUERTO SOUTH / ATACAMA DESERT / ARGENTINA
Welcome to one of the most remote and surreal landscapes on Earth — Hombre Muerto South, nestled in the high-altitude Puna Plateau of northwestern Argentina. Located above 3,500 meters in the Andes mountain range, this region is known for its arid terrain, vast salt flats, and extreme conditions. Some even call it "Mars on Earth."
In August, I had the opportunity to spend a week deep in the Andes, accompanying an incredible expedition.
After a grueling 22-hour flight, we landed in Salta Province and immediately began our journey into the mountains. A 3-hour drive brought us to San Antonio de los Cobres, at 3,800 meters, where we spent two nights acclimatizing to the altitude.
Once the full team arrived — including investors, geologists, a Focus journalist, and scientists — we headed out to our base camp, far removed from civilization. No roads, no people, no hospitals — just us, surrounded by raw, untamed nature.
At camp, we had to adapt quickly: strict rules on water usage, hygiene, and energy management. Communication with the outside world was limited to satellite internet, reserved mainly for research. Nights in tents dropped to -16°C, but the real challenge wasn’t the cold — it was the altitude. At 5,000 meters, oxygen levels drop to nearly half, turning even simple tasks into serious exertion. Carrying camera and drone gear suddenly felt like a workout. To help with oxygen absorption, we chewed coca leaves — a traditional method still common in the Salta region.
Every day, we explored the lunar-like landscape of the Puna de Atacama plateau, driving for hours through salt lakes and wide-open desert terrain. We captured stunning footage on both the Argentinian and Chilean sides of the Atacama Desert. Shoutout to DJI — the Mavic 3 Pro Cine drone powered through several hours of flight in harsh conditions, with only about 15% reduced battery time despite high winds and thin air.
This was truly an unforgettable journey into one of Earth’s most otherworldly places.
