00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:04Downing Street is one of the most famous addresses in the UK and the world.
00:08Located in the heart of Westminster, it's home to the official residences of the British
00:13Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, but it wasn't always political.
00:17The street was built in the 1680s by Sir George Downing, a diplomat and spy under Oliver Cromwell
00:24and later Charles II.
00:26He built a row of townhouses on land he'd acquired near St James's Park and over time
00:32they became tied to the workings of government.
00:35Number 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's residence, was originally three separate buildings.
00:41It was gifted to the Office of the First Lord of the Treasury in 1732, an office traditionally
00:47held by the Prime Minister.
