00:00¡Gracias, Joe!
00:01Confirma 1051, ready to go over.
00:05Bravo Delta 50 to Bravo Delta 60, ¿ya ready to roll up?
00:09Yeah, ready, ready.
00:10Receive.
00:13Let's go, Joe.
00:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:15Yeah.
00:17You see a swan glide gracefully across the water,
00:22but its legs are flapping like maddening.
00:25And that is basically what each one of these episodes are.
00:29Yeah, let's make it cool.
00:30Yeah, let's make it cool.
00:30Yeah, let's make it cool.
00:42Police!
00:43Get down on the floor!
00:43What's going on?
00:45With adolescence being a single shot format,
00:48it all runs very differently to normal.
00:50It took a few weeks to really understand
00:53that it was only one camera moving through space,
00:55that there was no cuts,
00:56and that whatever was shot is the episode.
00:58I have a warrant to start your premises,
01:00so where's your son?
01:01Where's your son?
01:02He's in his bedroom.
01:03What do you need to be deployed for?
01:04Where is he?
01:05You kind of feel like you're in a theatre space
01:08more than a TV space.
01:10Once the train starts moving,
01:12no one can stop it.
01:13Do you know what I mean?
01:14Mr. Miller,
01:14I will arrest you for obstruction.
01:16Please stop.
01:18Please.
01:19What do you need me, boys?
01:19I'm arresting you on suspicion of murder.
01:22Do you understand?
01:22Dad, I haven't done anything!
01:25Adolescence is not a whodunit,
01:26it's a whodunit.
01:28How did this boy end up in this place?
01:30You're certain he's been arrested
01:31on suspicion of murder?
01:32And this started with a phone call from Stephen
01:34saying,
01:35how do we tell that story
01:37in four one-hour shots?
01:41I always wanted to tell a tale
01:43over a long time span,
01:45but not do it the way
01:47normal chronological stories work.
01:49Jane!
01:50Don't stay not!
01:51That was the idea of
01:52spanning it across 13 months,
01:54but dipping in and out.
01:56Dad!
01:56And so we quickly worked out
01:59we're going to do the arrest,
02:01we're going to do school,
02:02then we're going to spend
02:03some time with Jamie,
02:04and then we're going to spend
02:05some time with the family.
02:08Episode one is looking
02:09at a particular situation
02:10and trying to be
02:12as impartial as possible.
02:13Excuse me.
02:15Thank you.
02:16Tell me when we can see me son.
02:17Not long, Mr. Miller.
02:18All right.
02:19It could happen to anybody,
02:20you know what I mean?
02:21We thought it'd be interesting
02:21to shine a light on the devastation
02:23that causes, you know,
02:24the ripple effect that that has
02:25on everybody.
02:26Did you do it?
02:27It's going to touch a nerve
02:29with a lot of different people,
02:31and it's important for us
02:32to represent in the right way
02:33and be accurate.
02:35He's a good kid.
02:36This wasn't about othering, Jamie.
02:39Don't put this in the extraordinary.
02:41Make this feel like
02:42it could happen to you,
02:43because that is the reality
02:45of what is happening
02:46in our world.
02:47You'd have a bit by your side
02:48all the way through it.
02:49All right?
02:49Okay?
02:50Okay.
02:51We wanted the audience
02:52to be thinking,
02:53there's no way he's done this.
02:55This kid couldn't do that.
02:56So for him to see this act
03:00committed by his boy,
03:02he's poleaxed.
03:04And his life from that moment on
03:05will never be the same again.
03:07What have you done?
03:17Episode 2
03:18should be something
03:19that makes people think,
03:21sparks debate,
03:22and opens the door
03:24for other directors,
03:25writers,
03:26to feel that they can show
03:27the harsher sides of reality
03:28beautifully.
03:30Oi!
03:32Ryan!
03:32What have you done?
03:34What have you done?
03:40This show is about windows, right?
03:42You get four different windows
03:43into Jamie's world.
03:45But it was working out
03:46where the windows were best placed
03:48so that we could understand him.
03:51Episode 2 is kind of like
03:53piecing it together
03:53within the school
03:54and seeing how kind of
03:56social media can affect
03:57our children these days.
03:59What's up?
04:00It's not going well
04:01because you're not getting it.
04:03What am I not getting?
04:04You're not reading
04:05what they're doing.
04:07What's happening?
04:08What are you talking about?
04:09The theme of the show
04:11is reality.
04:14The youngsters
04:15don't live in a blinkered world
04:16where they don't know
04:17that these things happen.
04:19Oh man, these kids
04:20are fucking impossible.
04:21What am I supposed to do?
04:22There's 300 kids
04:23as well as all of the teachers
04:25or the chaperones
04:25that are being led around
04:26by lots of dressed-in ADs.
04:28So it's got to be
04:29really meticulously planned out.
04:31You're going to get instructions
04:32from the cast teachers
04:33to get back in line.
04:35Do not listen to them.
04:37What have you done?
04:38We have three weeks
04:39for one episode, right?
04:40So our first week is spent
04:41literally walking through
04:43scene by scene.
04:45Shall we pop inside?
04:46We're going to be going through it
04:48a lot
04:48over and over again.
04:50Then it becomes muscle memory,
04:51you know?
04:51Then we do the tech rehearsal
04:52with all the crew.
04:54That week, you know,
04:55we put a lens on it,
04:56we start moving through the space,
04:57we start realising
04:58what doesn't work.
04:59Kind of two steps forward,
05:01one step back a little bit.
05:02It's good that they happen now.
05:03It's the end of rehearsals.
05:04And look, we're all doing it
05:05without our scripts already anyway.
05:07And then the last week,
05:08we get ten chances,
05:09two a day,
05:10at shooting,
05:11one take.
05:13Jane, this is a huge loss, love.
05:16We'll arrange for somebody
05:17for you to have a chat.
05:18Not another shrink.
05:19No, it's not a shrink.
05:20It's just something you
05:21to talk to.
05:21Please, Jane.
05:22Say, hear it.
05:22No, you can't go back to class.
05:24You know you can't.
05:25When I first read the script,
05:26it blew my mind.
05:27I felt like I just knew
05:28all these characters
05:29and I could visualise
05:31the whole thing.
05:32Let's have a word with Ryan.
05:37The collaboration on this show,
05:38a lot of it was technical,
05:40but the surprising thing
05:41was using technical to free us.
05:43Action.
05:43I'd written in this chase sequence
05:45and this chase sequence
05:47took Bascom and this boy
05:48beside the murder site
05:49and then the camera
05:50was going to travel back
05:51on its own
05:52back to the school.
05:53That moment
05:54would have felt
05:55almost like a video game
05:56walking down the street.
05:58I think it would just
05:58take the audience away
05:59from what the piece is.
06:01And then Phil called me up
06:02and he said,
06:03Matt and I think we found a way
06:04to make the camera fly.
06:07If the camera could float away
06:09by itself,
06:10then it couldn't possibly be
06:11attached to a person.
06:13It kind of feels more ethereal.
06:14So you've got Bascom
06:16finding his own
06:17sort of resolution
06:18and you're with
06:20this character Jade
06:20whose heart is pulled out
06:22and you're with
06:23all these kids
06:24as they pull out their phones
06:25and then the camera
06:26takes off
06:27and the camera comes
06:28to rest at the murder site.
06:30It was an example
06:30of the technical
06:31meeting the story
06:33and finding a fusion
06:34which is actually better
06:35than anything
06:36that the story
06:37had come up with
06:37on its own.
06:39What Jack Thorne
06:41is so brilliant at
06:42is being so brutal
06:44and so human.
06:46That's the crux
06:47of this episode
06:48and probably the whole series
06:50is how interesting
06:51it is what people present
06:53versus what's within.
06:54I always wanted episode 3
06:59to be a wonderful two-handed.
07:01It's a Jack Thorne
07:03beautiful masterpiece.
07:04Hi Jamie.
07:06Go, go, go.
07:07It was nerve-wracking
07:09reading episode 3
07:11and then realizing
07:13oh, we need to cast
07:15a 13-year-old lad
07:16who can really like
07:18go on a journey
07:19emotionally.
07:20who looks
07:22extremely innocent
07:23and looks like
07:24a vulnerable
07:24afraid young boy.
07:26And we haven't finished.
07:27Because of schedule
07:28needs
07:29we had to start
07:30with episode 3
07:31which I was very nervous about
07:32because that's
07:33an hour-long script
07:34for a young actor
07:35to learn
07:36acting opposite
07:37Erin Doherty.
07:38Do it quick,
07:39what was that?
07:39That rehearsal week
07:40you're constantly
07:41asking yourself
07:42can he get there?
07:43Soon as you lose
07:44that eye contact
07:44all the time it's gone.
07:46You'll be giving him notes
07:47and he's just looking
07:48at you like that look.
07:50He's giving you that look
07:50and I'm like
07:51is he listening to me?
07:52Look out!
07:53Fucking want to sit down!
07:55Do not tell me
07:57when to sit down!
07:58Get that in the fucking
07:59little out of yours!
08:00And then I'll go
08:01and do a take
08:01every single note
08:02will be nailed.
08:04It was a combination
08:05of two voices
08:06in the room for him.
08:08It was Phil
08:09who's so gentle
08:11and it was Erin.
08:12I need you
08:14to sit
08:15down.
08:17It's so well written
08:17that it kind of
08:18requires you
08:19to just be there.
08:22We're just
08:23surrendering to the script
08:24and each other.
08:27Something happened
08:28between the two of them
08:29and it just
08:30took Owen
08:32into another place
08:33and took Jamie
08:34into another place
08:35and actually
08:36it was the best start
08:37we could have made
08:38for him.
08:38That night
08:39I didn't touch her.
08:42I could have touched her
08:43but I didn't.
08:44I just
08:44I had a knife
08:46she was scared
08:47but I didn't do that.
08:49I could have touched
08:49any part of her body
08:50I wanted to
08:50I really wanted to
08:51but I didn't
08:52I just
08:52most boys
08:54would have touched her.
08:55What's so heartbreaking
08:56for Bryony at the end
08:57you witness her
08:58have to let go
09:00of everything
09:01she's wanted
09:02this boy to be.
09:04What did you think
09:04about me then?
09:05and all these thoughts
09:10it's kind of
09:11come into her mind
09:12and it's kind of
09:13symbolised through
09:13this sandwich
09:14the person that she was
09:16when she entered the room
09:17who was making the offer
09:18to then the person
09:20who won't even
09:20touch it.
09:25It's just such a great
09:27thing to play.
09:27We always
09:31see the perspective
09:32of the victim's
09:34family
09:34which is rightly so
09:35do you know what I mean
09:35of course we should
09:36and with episode 4
09:38I wanted to have a look
09:39at the impact
09:40it has upon the family
09:41of the boy
09:42who has committed
09:43the act.
09:45Alright nuns.
09:47Hey?
09:47Hey!
09:49Hey!
09:49Alright nuns!
09:51Did you see that
09:51to my phone?
09:54Did ya?
09:54It was really
09:56important to Stephen
09:57that this wasn't a show
09:58that made easy answers.
09:59What did you do?
10:01Eddie?
10:01The one thing
10:02he said to me
10:03right at the beginning
10:03was we can't blame
10:04the parents.
10:07I didn't want
10:08Jamie to come
10:09from a background
10:10where his mum
10:11was a drinker
10:12or his dad
10:14was violent
10:15and aggressive.
10:17I wanted to
10:17eliminate
10:18all of those things
10:20to try and
10:21get the audience
10:22to ask the question
10:23why?
10:24but also
10:25in the same respect
10:26think
10:27that
10:28could be me
10:30that could be
10:31my child
10:32I wish he'd have
10:34picked you
10:35you'd have done better
10:36no
10:37yeah it was
10:39you'd have done better
10:42Stephen's performances
10:44are real
10:45he opens up his heart
10:47for people to see
10:48he knows exactly
10:49what he wants
10:50that was
10:52yeah
10:52that was fantastic
10:53I love working with him
10:56he's just incredible
10:56he's passionate
10:57Stephen
10:59is an instinctive leader
11:01he's someone that
11:03just you kind of flock to
11:04there was a feeling
11:05of a gang on this show
11:07everyone was excited
11:08about what we were doing
11:09ready
11:10ready
11:10go on and do a take
11:11let's go
11:12before we take
11:15my heart is pounding
11:16absolutely everyone feels it
11:17because everyone knows
11:18how important their job is
11:19action
11:21it takes a real army of people
11:23to pull it together
11:24you know
11:24because there's not one person
11:25on that set
11:26who's not important
11:27because without every single person
11:29it could all collapse
11:30watching it come to life
11:32watching the decisions
11:34that Matt and Phil made
11:37as they were telling the story
11:39through the camera
11:40it was really thrilling
11:41I think if anything
11:43can force us to look at a subject
11:45that we don't want to look at
11:46it's a one shot
11:46because you really are forced
11:48to watch it
11:49there's no break from it
11:50the fact is
11:53we are dealing with
11:54the harsh reality
11:55of what is going on
11:56and I hope it does make people
11:58stand up and think
11:59about what they're doing
12:00or what they're not doing
12:01do you like me?
12:03you don't know
12:04what's going on
12:05behind closed doors
12:06with anyone ever
12:06no one is just evil
12:08no one is just all bad
12:10it's just so much more complex
12:12I was a good mum
12:13we're not trying to give answers
12:15we're not trying to
12:17lay blame particularly
12:18it's a really complicated time
12:20but we need to be talking
12:22about these things
12:22I'm sorry son
12:25I just hope it creates debate
12:28and I hope it creates
12:28conversation between
12:29parents and child
