NATO, Japan's security 'inseparable,' says NATO chief
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says on April 8, 2025 that the security of NATO and Japan is 'inseparable' during a meeting with Japanese Defense Minister in Tokyo. Speaking to Gen Nakatani, Rutte said that NATO would like to work more closely with Japan as facing many of the same challenges together. He also appraised Japan’s Self-Defense Force during the meeting as he boarded an SDF frigate, the Mogami, at a maritime base in Yokosuka earlier near Tokyo. Rutte will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on April 9.

00:28Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine shows that we cannot take our security for granted.
00:41China, North Korea, and Russia are stepping up their military exercises and their cooperation,
00:48undermining global stability.
00:49And that means that what happens in the Euro-Atlantic matters for the Indo-Pacific and vice versa.
00:56So our security, I believe, is inseparable.
00:59To put it in just one sentence, NATO and Japan share the same values and we face many of the same challenges.
01:07So therefore I look forward to work even closer, more closely together.
