In the beginning Bernard is an ordinary schoolboy who is always late. He parents do their best to help him but when his best friend Karen's birthday arrived he finds that he is late. And to make matter worse when he arrives, he realises he is not wearing any trousers.
Soon, he finds out he has forgotten Karen's Birthday present as well. He makes a quick dash home only to find his parents are out and he has to ask his neighbour for the key. A while later he is almost at the party when a lorry drives past and soaks him in mud. While emptying water from his shoe, a lawn mower comes along and destroys the present. Bernard gets really depressed and decides not to go to the party and sits on the steps of the community centre hosting the party wishing he had more time. At that moment, a strange man gives him a parcel. It contains a pocket watch which can stop time freezing everyone and everything except himself and the man who delivered the watch, who later introduces himself as the Postman. Bernard asks the Postman if he is sure the watch is for him and he explains that Bernard earned the watch by wishing for more time while sitting at the end of a rainbow which gives him just one wish. Bernard decides to use the extra time provided by the watch to clean himself and buy another present and goes to the party. Karen's mother suggests the watch would help Bernard stop being late which he does from this point on.
