Game of Thrones' dire wolf brought back from extinction

00:04In a huge scientific breakthrough, the direwolf has been revived after 10,000 years, thanks

00:09to biotech startup Colossal Biosciences.

00:12The Texas-based company said its researchers had used cloning and gene editing based on

00:17two ancient samples of direwolf DNA to birth three modern direwolf pups.

00:23Researchers at Colossal explained the de-extinction process involved taking blood cells from a

00:27living grey wolf, the direwolf's closest living relative, and genetically modifying

00:31them in 20 different sites.

00:33That genetic material was transferred to an egg cell from a domestic dog, then the embryos

00:37were transferred to surrogates for gestation and finally successful birth.

00:41The direwolf is a mainstay of fantasy games like Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft,

00:46but it truly shot to fame when it was featured in TV show Game of Thrones.

00:49Colossal Biosciences noted this moment as a huge leap forward for science, conservation

00:54and humanity.
