00:00This is the Glasgow Necropolis, considered by many to be one of the spookiest places
00:04in the world. It is a Victorian cemetery that rolls down a hill on the east end and overlooks
00:09the city, situated behind the gothic towers of the Royal Infirmary and Glasgow Cathedral.
00:15Some of the tombs and gravestones were designed by important figures in Scotland's architectural
00:20history, people who shaped the look and feel of our country as we know it today, including
00:24Charles Rennie McIntosh and Alexander Thompson. On such a beautiful day as this one, the necropolis
00:31looks stunning, soaking up the sun, but you can imagine how creepy it looks at night time
00:35devoid of all this light. I can personally vouch it is a terrifying place to walk at
00:40night. There are various local legends, tales of paranormal activity, including stories
00:45of a white lady who floats around at night, whispers coming from the graves, as well as
00:50a low-lying mist that sets at night. It is the final resting place of an estimated 50,000
00:57people, and approximately 3,500 monuments have been erected here. It is an extremely
01:04important place. Established 193 years ago in 1832, it was one of the first cemeteries
01:11in Britain that allowed burials for profit. It represents a decline in religious faith
01:16across Glasgow, as the parish church previously held the responsibility for burying the dead,
01:22while there was a growing need for an alternative as less people attended church.
