شأت ماكسيما في بوينس آيرس في الأرجنتين، وتعلمت في المدرسة المتوسطة على أسس أرستقراطية بريطانية. وبعد إكمالها المرحلة الثانوية درست الاقتصاد في «جامعة كاتوليكا» في الأرجنتين، وبعد تخرجها عملت في عام 1995 في عدة بنوك في نيويورك حتى عام2000 .
