In a landmark judgment, the Karnataka High Court has urged Parliament and state legislatures to work collectively towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country. Justice H. Sanjeev Kumar, while ruling on a property dispute between the husband and siblings of a deceased Muslim woman, emphasized the need for a common civil code irrespective of religion or personal laws. He said such a code would fulfill the ideals enshrined in Article 44 of the Constitution and promote justice, equality, liberty, fraternity, and national unity.Highlighting that women face unequal treatment under current personal laws, the court praised states like Goa and Uttarakhand for already introducing UCC. The Registrar General has been directed to send a copy of the judgment to the Centre and Karnataka’s Law Secretaries to initiate action.Meanwhile, in Delhi, the Ayushman Bharat health scheme has officially launched following an MoU between the Centre and Delhi government. From April 10, residents can register for free treatment coverage up to ₹10 lakh. The Centre will bear 60% of the cost for the initial ₹5 lakh, while Delhi government adds a ₹5 lakh top-up.Separately, Chirag Paswan met his elder mother amid a family property dispute, accusing uncle Pashupati Paras of dividing the family for wealth.
