00:00The next time you do something bad, I'll be there to catch you.
00:04Oh, you'll be watching in that room?
00:05Yeah, that's how you were inviting me somewhere.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the funniest,
00:12most memorable, and most poignant improvised moments in Marvel movies and shows.
00:16We'll only be considering takes that made it into the final cut,
00:19no deleted scenes or bloopers.
00:21A spoiler alert is in effect.
00:24Uh, I love the Jets.
00:25Cap, you gonna bring him?
00:27I suppose I'll have to.
00:28Boom.
00:32Number 50.
00:33Have you ever tried shawarma?
00:35The Avengers.
00:36After battling an army of aliens, saving New York, and almost dying in the process,
00:40of course Tony Stark is hungry.
00:42Have you ever tried shawarma?
00:44There's a shawarma joint about two blocks from here.
00:46I don't know what it is, but I want to try it.
00:48In an interview with Entertainment Weekly,
00:50director Joss Whedon revealed that Iron Man's bit about shawarma was completely improvised.
00:55It even inspired the creators to shoot a new post-credits scene
00:58long after production had wrapped on the film.
01:00In it, we see the exhausted gang enjoying their shawarma in silence
01:04while the restaurant's crew nonchalantly cleans up around them.
01:13Real-life shawarma restaurants got a big sales bump after the movie's release,
01:17since Tony's improv made fans as curious as he was about the traditional Middle Eastern dish.
01:22All right, good job, guys.
01:24Let's just not come in tomorrow.
01:26Let's just take a day.
01:31Peter Quill isn't nearly as famous as he seems to think he is.
01:35That amusing personality trait evolved thanks to some unscripted collaboration
01:39between Chris Pratt and Guardians director James Gunn.
01:42Pratt suggested that they'd play on the fact
01:44that most viewers wouldn't know who Star-Lord was either.
01:46What is your name?
01:47My name is Peter Quill, okay?
01:49Dude, chill out.
01:50Move!
01:51Why?
01:51Peter's disappointed reaction when Korath doesn't recognize him was totally improvised,
01:56and it's the perfect way to introduce this goofy but lovable character.
02:00Hey, you know what? There's another name you might know me by.
02:04Star-Lord.
02:07Who?
02:08Star-Lord, man.
02:09Legendary outlaw.
02:11Guys?
02:12Move!
02:13The fact that the Nova Corps doesn't get his alias right either
02:16just adds insult to injury for this would-be legendary outlaw.
02:20Oh, I'm sorry.
02:22I didn't know how this machine worked.
02:24What a bunch of a-holes.
02:30This sweet moment between Yelena Belova and the Red Guardian
02:33was entirely David Harbour's idea.
02:35Yelena, understandably, has a lot of resentment toward her adoptive father.
02:39He wants to atone for failing her years ago,
02:42but all his efforts fall flat.
02:44It's a very cold day in this little ice shed, cold even for Russia.
02:47You know, keep the vodka by the fire, my father would say to me.
02:50Please stop talking.
02:51Please wait.
02:52Please wait.
02:53Please, please.
02:55That is, until he starts singing American Pie.
02:58Harbour and director Kate Shortland decided that the tune should be Yelena's comfort song,
03:02a throwback to her childhood when she and Alexei would drive around listening to the tape.
03:13It's his way of telling Yelena that he knows he was far from the perfect dad,
03:19but he did his best.
03:36It's been a few years since Thor and Captain America shared a battlefield.
03:40Naturally, when Thor arrives in Wakanda to help fight Thanos' army,
03:43the two have some catching up to do.
03:55The two Chrises reportedly improvised the brief conversation,
03:58which focuses on how their characters' appearances have changed since their last meeting.
04:02Your haircut?
04:03Notice you've copied my beard?
04:07Oh, by the way, this is a friend of mine, Tree.
04:10I am Groot!
04:13I am Steve Rogers.
04:14Since the actors seem to be pretty good pals in real life,
04:17it's no surprise they were able to come up with an interaction that feels so natural.
04:30It's a nice moment of levity in the midst of a fierce and brutal fight.
04:34Number 46, I'll Be Seeing You Again, Ant-Man and the Wasp.
04:38It seems like the less Paul Rudd sticks to the script, the funnier he gets.
04:42Jimmy Woo has been keeping an eye on Scott Lang during his house arrest.
04:56However, Lang still manages to disappear right under Woo's nose.
05:00At the end of the movie, Woo warns Scott that they haven't seen the last of each other,
05:04which leads to some brilliant improv from both Rudd and Randall Park.
05:14Park himself is no slouch when it comes to comedy,
05:17and that awkward dinner invitation is particularly genius.
05:30Though he's a relatively minor player in the MCU, Jimmy Woo always leaves us wanting more.
05:46Number 45, Odin's Snarl, Thor.
05:50Sir Anthony Hopkins knows how to command a scene,
05:52and we can't imagine a better choice to play the Allfather.
05:56He jumped at the chance to work with fellow Shakespearean actor and Thor director Kenneth
06:00Branagh, who encouraged the actors to improvise.
06:15After Thor disobeys Odin's order and attacks the Frost Giants,
06:18Odin decides to strip him of his power.
06:21Loki, who is at least partly responsible for the whole mess,
06:24tries to intervene on his brother's behalf, and Odin silences him with a menacing growl.
06:31It's a bold choice, and coming from a lesser actor, it might have turned out silly.
06:36But Hopkins not only pulls it off,
06:38he makes us believe that Odin is truly a force to be reckoned with.
06:54Number 44, Kang climbs on the desk, Loki.
07:00Before Ant-Man faced off against Kang the Conqueror in the Quantum Realm,
07:03Loki and Sylvie met one of Kang's variants at the Time Variance Authority headquarters.
07:08He Who Remains explains the history of the war between the multiverses and the origins of the TVA.
07:25New worlds meant only one thing, new lands to be conquered.
07:31Director Cate Heron wanted Jonathan Majors to take ownership of the role and experiment with it,
07:36and Majors ran with that directive.
07:38He improvised some clever lines during Kang's speech.
07:41The choice to climb up onto the desk was also his.
07:44Hence, the TVA.
07:47Hence, the timekeepers in a highly efficient bureaucracy.
07:51Hence, ages and ages of cosmic harmony.
07:56Hence, you're welcome.
08:01Even the camera crew wasn't expecting it,
08:03and they had to improvise along with Majors to make it work.
08:06The result is a captivating scene,
08:08with a character who clearly has a much bigger role to play in the MCU.
08:22Just wait.
08:24Till you meet my variants.
08:30This one's a little bit of a cheat since it didn't appear in the final cut of the movie,
08:34but it did make it into the trailer,
08:36and it was recreated in an episode of Loki,
08:38so we're counting it.
08:40A few questions.
08:41Have you really got nothing else better to do?
08:44Rude.
08:44While filming a massive battle scene alongside Idris Elba,
08:47Tom Hiddleston misjudged the timing of his fight choreography,
08:50and wound up finishing before Elba did.
08:53Not wanting to just stand around looking useless,
08:55Hiddleston attempted to flip one of his knives and nailed it.
08:58I didn't want to stand there looking like a lemon.
09:02So I thought I better just keep going,
09:04and I flipped my daggers.
09:07Just, I just did it there and then,
09:09and then it became this thing.
09:12The moment looks so cool,
09:13we can't understand why the filmmakers didn't keep it in.
09:18Number 42.
09:20Spider-Man pointing meme.
09:22Spider-Man No Way Home.
09:24When you have three Spider-Men in a single scene,
09:27how can you resist recreating the classic pointing meme?
09:30Which one?
09:31I don't care which one!
09:33Get them both!
09:34That man's an imposter!
09:36That man is the imposter!
09:38The moment wasn't in the script,
09:40but Andrew Garfield revealed that the trio was determined to fit it in somehow.
09:44The scene in the chemistry lab when Ned attempts to get his Peter's attention
09:48was the perfect opportunity.
09:50The pointing is subtle enough that it doesn't distract from the scene,
09:53but obvious enough that anyone paying attention will get it immediately.
10:07Although it was a group effort,
10:08Garfield gets the credit for this ingenious moment.
10:14Number 41.
10:20Peter Quill drops an F-bomb.
10:22Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
10:24Star-Lord might wish he was more famous,
10:26but he did get to break new ground in the MCU.
10:29Chris Pratt had the honor of dropping the franchise's first F-bomb,
10:33or at least the first one that made it into a final cut.
10:36According to Pratt, he's been trying to make this happen for years.
10:40Of course, since then,
10:41Deadpool and Wolverine has retroactively made the older Marvel films officially part of the MCU.
11:06Some of them, like Blade and the original Deadpool,
11:09are packed with profanity.
11:10Does that mean Peter Quill's F-word no longer counts as the first?
11:14You'll have to hash that out in the comments.
11:20Number 40.
11:21One chance.
11:22Avengers Endgame.
11:23Our heroes are used to having the odds stacked against them,
11:26although one in 14 million is pretty extreme even for the Avengers.
11:31In Infinity War,
11:32Strange looks into the future and discovers there's only one timeline out of millions
11:36in which they actually defeat Thanos.
11:39How many did we win?
11:45One.
11:46He reminds Tony of that fact with a simple yet powerful gesture
11:50as they face off against the Mad Titan in the final battle of Endgame.
11:54After the film was released,
11:55Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch
11:59had come up with the idea himself.
12:01It's a brilliant piece of improvisation from one of the actors
12:04who's not usually known for it.
12:05How many did you see?
12:07Fourteen million six hundred and five.
12:09Number 39.
12:10Welcome to the MCU.
12:12Deadpool and Wolverine.
12:14It should come as no surprise to you that this is the first time
12:17the MCU has ever made a film about the MCU.
12:20Deadpool and Wolverine.
12:21It should come as no surprise that there was a lot of ad-libbing
12:24happening on the set of this movie.
12:26In fact, we could have picked any number of moments
12:29from Deadpool and Wolverine for this list.
12:31Oh my goodness, wait till you see Lady Pool.
12:32She is gorgeous.
12:34She just had a baby too and...
12:36Can't even tell.
12:37I don't think you're supposed to say that.
12:38That's okay.
12:40I identify as a feminist.
12:41In an interview with Entertainment Weekly,
12:43director Sean Levy shared that Ryan Reynolds
12:45came up with some of the film's best lines himself.
12:48That includes this not-so-subtle jab at Marvel
12:51that somehow made it out of the editing room.
12:53And he's standing right behind me, isn't he?
12:55Welcome to the MCU, by the way.
12:57You're joining at a bit of a low point.
12:59Nice Pool's more optimistic assessment of the franchise
13:01was also an improv from Reynolds.
13:03Let's just take the L and move on.
13:06I think it's been steadily great since Endgame.
13:08The man always seems to have the perfect joke
13:10ready to go in any scene.
13:13Number 38.
13:14Bunch of jackasses standing in a circle.
13:16Guardians of the Galaxy.
13:17Bradley Cooper gets to say the line,
13:19but it was Sean Gunn, aka Kraglin the Ravager,
13:22who came up with it.
13:23Gunn, who is director James Gunn's younger brother,
13:26stood in for Rocket Raccoon during filming.
13:28What the hell?
13:29I don't got that long a lifespan anyway.
13:31Many of his movements were used as references
13:33when the character was animated.
13:35He ad-libbed the bunch of jackasses bit
13:37at the end of this otherwise serious and poignant scene,
13:40which is totally in character for Rocket.
13:42Now I'm standing.
13:43Y'all happy?
13:44We're all standing up now.
13:47Bunch of jackasses standing in a circle.
13:50James Gunn liked the joke so much
13:52that he added it to Bradley Cooper's lines.
13:54He made sure to give his little brother credit
13:56while live-tweeting a quarantine watch party
13:58of the film in 2020.
14:02That's a fake laugh.
14:03It's real!
14:04Totally fake.
14:05Number 37.
14:06Alexi and Melina flirting.
14:08Black Widow.
14:09If you thought David Harbour and Rachel Weisz
14:11had great chemistry as a fake married couple,
14:13you weren't the only one.
14:15It still fits.
14:17Oh my God.
14:23I never watched it once.
14:24Come and drink.
14:25Kate Shortland noticed it too,
14:27and she gave the actors a lot of freedom
14:29to improvise on set.
14:30That led to plenty of spontaneous flirting
14:33between Melina and Alexi.
14:35The entire family dynamic feels incredibly natural,
14:38which is extra impressive considering
14:40they were never actually a real family.
14:42Come on, we're just going to press buttons
14:45and hack computers.
14:46I mean, I don't know.
14:47There's nothing for me to do.
14:48I want to break something.
14:52We have to agree with Shortland.
14:54The Red Guardian absolutely deserves his own movie,
14:57and Melina Vostokoff had better be part of it.
15:00I just got out of prison.
15:01I have a lot of energy.
15:06Please don't do that.
15:07Number 36.
15:08Post-credit scene.
15:09The Incredible Hulk.
15:11Although Edward Norton's version of the Hulk
15:13was a box office success,
15:14it got totally overshadowed by Iron Man,
15:17which released just a month earlier.
15:19Let's face it, this is not the worst thing
15:20you've caught me doing.
15:22Now, it's probably the most overlooked
15:24of the MCU films.
15:25But the Incredible Hulk includes
15:27a pivotal post-credits cameo from Tony Stark,
15:30who approaches General Thaddeus Ross
15:32about the Avengers initiative.
15:34Stark.
15:35General.
15:38You always wear such nice suits.
15:42Touché.
15:43According to William Hurt,
15:44the entire scene was unscripted.
15:47He and Robert Downey Jr. were directed
15:48to simply talk and respond to each other
15:50as their characters really would.
15:52The studio must have been satisfied
15:54with Hurt's performance,
15:55since they brought the character back
15:56for several more movies.
15:58You should talk.
16:00You should listen.
16:04What if I told you we were putting a team together?
16:07It was we.
16:12Number 35.
16:14Loki.
16:14The God of Mischief might not be
16:16Thor's biological sibling,
16:18but he certainly behaves like a little brother.
16:20That includes imitating Thor's habit
16:22of smashing his glass to call
16:23for another round of drinks.
16:24Or maybe it's just an Asgardian tradition.
16:27This drink, I like it.
16:28I know, it's great, right?
16:29Another!
16:31After the release of episode three of Loki,
16:34Kate Herron told Thrillist
16:35that Tom Hiddleston had improvised
16:37the line and the glass smash.
16:40Another!
16:43Considering it's a callback to Thor,
16:45which came out 10 years earlier,
16:47it's kind of amazing that Hiddleston
16:49remembered the original moment at all,
16:51especially since he wasn't in that scene.
16:53That is probably why Herron refers to him
16:56as the, quote,
16:57Loki encyclopedia.
16:58I saw some people looking at you weirdly.
17:00What?
17:03Number 34.
17:04Picnic by the Lake.
17:05Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
17:08Imagine shooting a beautiful 20-minute scene
17:11only for about two seconds of it
17:13to wind up in the final film.
17:15That's what happened to Fala Chen and Tony Leung
17:17while filming a montage of their happy life together.
17:24The flashback starts with what appears to be
17:26Li and Wenwu's first date,
17:28a romantic picnic next to a lake
17:29in a bamboo forest.
17:31As Chen explained to Glamour,
17:32the scene contains no dialogue.
17:35She showed me a part of myself
17:36I didn't know was there.
17:38So she and Leung improvised a conversation
17:40while the crew filmed them from behind.
17:42Chen seized the opportunity
17:43to pepper the legendary Leung with questions,
17:46resulting in an intimate and natural moment
17:48between the actors.
17:49Director Destin Daniel Cretton loved it so much,
17:52he just let the cameras keep rolling.
17:57Number 33.
17:59This suit means a lot of things.
18:01Deadpool and Wolverine.
18:03We knew Ryan Reynolds would have free reign
18:05to ad-lib plenty of comedic lines in this movie.
18:08But one of the best unscripted moments
18:10was actually a collaboration between Hugh Jackman
18:12and director Sean Levy.
18:14In a relatively serious scene,
18:16Wolverine and Deadpool finally subdue Cassandra Nova,
18:19but Logan isn't willing to just let her die.
18:33While filming,
18:34Levy reminded Jackman about a previous scene
18:36in an empty diner,
18:37where Wade tells Logan how beloved Wolverine is
18:39in Wade's universe.
18:52It inspired Jackman to expand on the scripted lines,
18:55and he even tears up as he speaks.
18:57It's a powerful and surprisingly touching moment
19:00in the midst of a lot of carnage and wisecracks.
19:10Number 32.
19:11Nobody would know.
19:12Avengers Age of Ultron.
19:14Out of the dozens of movies and shows in the MCU,
19:18this one probably isn't many people's favorite.
19:20But at least it gave Hawkeye some of his best lines.
19:31Perhaps the funniest is this scene
19:33during which he and Pietro Maximoff
19:35are evacuating citizens from the Sokovian capital.
19:38Clint is understandably annoyed
19:40by the smart-mouthed speedster,
19:41and he briefly considers putting him out of his misery.
19:48Jeremy Renner improvised the moment,
19:51which is both hilarious
19:52and fits Hawkeye's lovable everyman persona.
19:55Although we do have to wonder
19:56whether Hawkeye feels a little bad about the impulse
19:59when Pietro takes a bullet for him a few minutes later.
20:02You didn't see that coming?
20:07Number 31.
20:08Zemo dancing.
20:09The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
20:11In 2021, the internet went crazy
20:14for the return of Helmut Zemo,
20:15and more specifically,
20:16for the brief shot of him dancing at a Madripoor club.
20:29The moment was instantly meme-ified,
20:31and fans began clamoring
20:32for Disney to release an extended cut of the dance.
20:35For once, the studio listened,
20:37and the full video is just as delightful as you would hope.
20:47Daniel Brühl improvised the dance,
20:49never imagining that it would make it into the episode,
20:52let alone go viral.
20:53It turned out to be a quick but effective way
20:55to start developing the character
20:57beyond the one-dimensional villain
20:58we met in Captain America Civil War.
21:01I'm thrilled that they kept it in the final cut,
21:04and to see the reactions,
21:05I mean, some of my friends texted me
21:08and, you know, put on their own tunes to the dance.
21:12I mean, it's really funny.
21:14Number 30.
21:15The adults are talking.
21:16Avengers Infinity War.
21:18After Stephen Strange is kidnapped
21:19by one of Thanos' henchmen,
21:21Iron Man flies to the rescue,
21:23and so does Peter Parker against Tony's orders.
21:26When Tony discovers the young web-slinger on the spaceship,
21:29he's not exactly happy to see him.
21:31You should not be here.
21:32I was going to go home.
21:33I don't want to hear it.
21:33But it was such a long way down,
21:34and I just thought about shooting it.
21:35And now I got to hear it.
21:35It kind of stuck to the side of the ship,
21:37and this suit is ridiculously intuitive, by the way,
21:40so if anything, it's kind of your fault that I'm here.
21:43What did you just say?
21:44That led to this classic line,
21:46which Tom Holland later revealed
21:47was all Robert Downey Jr.'s idea.
21:50It's a great bit of comic relief
21:51in an otherwise tense scene,
21:53not to mention perfectly in line with Tony Stark's character.
21:56Unlike everyone else in your life, I don't work for you.
21:58And due to that fact,
21:59we're now in a flying donut
22:01billions of miles from Earth with no backup.
22:03I'm backup.
22:03No, you're a stowaway.
22:05The adults are talking.
22:06Peter is understandably a little put out by the remark,
22:09but just a few moments later,
22:10he gets redeemed when Tony officially makes him part of the team.
22:14Number 29.
22:16Intimidating Agent Ross, Black Panther.
22:19As a CIA operative,
22:20Everett Ross is used to commanding a little more respect,
22:23but he has no authority in the Jabari homeland,
22:27and their leader M'Baku is quick to remind him of that fact.
22:30You cannot talk one more word,
22:33and I will feed you to my children.
22:35Wakandans, including the Jabari,
22:37are famously distrustful of outsiders,
22:40and M'Baku has no reason to listen to this random white guy
22:43who just showed up on his doorstep.
22:44When Ross tries to explain the situation with Killmonger,
22:48M'Baku leads the tribe in a gorilla-like chant
22:50to intimidate him into silence.
22:52Your Highness, the new king is a...
22:55Yes, uh, the new king...
23:00Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh...
23:03Oh, oh, oh...
23:05It works.
23:05Winston Duke shared that he came up with the chant
23:08as a way of recognizing the Jabari's pride
23:10in their connection to the gorilla god Hanuman.
23:13Number 28.
23:14Secret Door, Avengers Age of Ultron.
23:17Good things happen when directors let Robert Downey Jr. ad-lib.
23:20After the Avengers infiltrate a Hydra compound,
23:23Iron Man searches for clues with Jarvis' help.
23:25The original script reportedly had no dialogue written for this moment,
23:29so RDJ got to have a little fun with it.
23:31-"The wall to your left. I'm reading steel reinforcement and an air current."
23:38-"Please be a secret door. Please be a secret door. Please be a secret door."
23:42-"Yay!"
23:43However, executive producer Jeremy Latcham should get the credit for arguably the funniest line in the scene.
23:48It was his idea to add Iron Man's excited little yay in post-production.
23:52The MCU has a knack for livening up otherwise mundane sequences with humor,
23:57and a big part of that is thanks to the cast's amazing talent for improvising.
24:01-"Guys, stop. We gotta talk this through."
24:07-"Let's get talking."
24:08Number 27. Hot sauce. Hawkeye.
24:10After Yelena Belova breaks into Kate Bishop's house,
24:13the two sit down for a heart-to-heart over a pot of delicious boxed mac and cheese.
24:17-"Are you really not hungry?"
24:18-"That fight was so long. It's really tasty. Really tasty."
24:24-"Yeah, I know what boxed mac and cheese tastes like, okay? I know it's delicious."
24:28Florence Pugh absolutely kills it in this scene and this role.
24:32Not only does she completely disappear into the character of Yelena,
24:35it was also her idea to add the hot sauce to the mac.
24:38According to directors Burt and Bertie, after Kate threw the bottle of sriracha at Yelena,
24:43Pugh insisted that the condiment actually get used in the scene.
24:46A hot sauce lover, she happily kept gulping it down over multiple takes.
24:51-"Are you done?"
24:53-"Yeah."
24:53-"Can I go?"
24:55-"Sure, you can."
24:55-"I can put hot sauce on it?"
24:58-"Oh, I love hot sauce."
25:00It's a tiny but memorable detail that adds a bit more depth to a mysterious,
25:04yet totally lovable character.
25:06Number 26. Peter drops the orb. Guardians of the Galaxy.
25:11Although the MCU is known for mixing a lot of humor into its movies and shows,
25:15Guardians was arguably the first straight-up comedy in the series.
25:18From the opening scene featuring Star-Lord dancing,
25:21it's clear that this movie is going to be even more light-hearted than other Marvel properties.
25:38The jokes don't stop even in seemingly serious scenes,
25:41like when the Guardians meet the Collector.
25:43When Quill presents the orb, he initially drops it,
25:46a move that wasn't in the original script.
25:56Director James Gunn thought the clumsiness was an accident,
25:59but Chris Pratt swears it was intentional.
26:02Gunn says he believes him, 90%.
26:05Number 25. Wakandan war chant. Avengers Infinity War.
26:10Filming two movies at once is a ton of work,
26:13but it has its benefits.
26:14Infinity War was in production at the same time as Black Panther,
26:18forcing many actors to split their time between sets.
26:21It also meant that they had developed a powerful connection to their Wakandan characters
26:25by the time the battle against Thanos' forces was shot.
26:39Directors Joe and Anthony Russo were surprised and delighted
26:42when Winston Duke began leading his fellow Jabari in an intimidating war chant.
26:47This inspired Chadwick Boseman to lead a similar cry later in the scene.
27:00It's a moment that fans, and the Russo brothers themselves,
27:04will probably never forget.
27:06Number 24. Therapy session. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
27:13Given their history together, Sam and Bucky seem like an odd pairing,
27:18but it's nothing a little court-ordered therapy can't help.
27:21In an interview, Amy Aquino, who plays the therapist,
27:24revealed that Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie improvised most of the scene on the spot.
27:29That includes the interlocking legs bit,
27:31which Aquino says they nailed on the first try.
27:43The scene is a brilliant blend of humor and seriousness,
27:51and even gives us some real insight into Bucky's deepest fears.
27:54Those personal moments with beloved characters
27:56are part of the reason MCU fans are so devoted to the franchise.
28:01Number 23. Throwing bread. Spider-Man No Way Home.
28:05The third Spider-Man film in the MCU brings in multiple Spideys from other universes.
28:10When Ned creates a portal and accidentally summons Andrew Garfield,
28:13he and MJ are understandably suspicious of this stranger claiming to be Peter Parker.
28:30On an episode of the podcast Happy Sad Confused,
28:32Garfield explained that it was Zendaya's idea for her to toss bread at him.
28:36Though MJ initially claims that she's testing his spider sense,
28:40it quickly turns into a more menacing gesture.
28:54Garfield is probably just glad the basket wasn't full of rocks instead of bread.
28:59Number 22. Blueberry? The Avengers.
29:06It's long been rumored that Robert Downey Jr. has a habit of hiding food all over his movie sets.
29:11Vincent D'Onofrio, who starred alongside RDJ in 2014's The Judge,
29:16confirmed the rumor in an interview with HuffPost Live.
29:19In this scene from the first MCU ensemble film,
29:22Tony Stark and Bruce Banner examine the mind stone embedded in Loki's scepter.
29:26Mid-conversation, Tony conjures a bag of blueberries seemingly out of nowhere,
29:30offering one to Banner and another to Steve Rogers.
29:33The move was totally unscripted,
29:35just a natural consequence of Downey's penchant for snacking and for improvising lines.
29:56Chris Hemsworth didn't truly get to show off his talent for comedy until Thor Ragnarok,
30:00but true fans realized early on that the Aussie knows his way around a joke.
30:04In this scene from the first Thor movie,
30:06the God of Thunder is completely out of his element on Earth.
30:10As Jane, Darcy and Dr. Selvig watch him shove pancakes into his face,
30:14he suddenly flings his coffee mug to the floor and demands more.
30:20According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige,
30:23the shattered mug was entirely Hemsworth's improvisation.
30:27That explains the rest of the cast's priceless reactions.
30:30Number 20
30:36It's pretty well known that Robert Downey Jr. liked to improvise some of his dialogue
30:41in the various MCU movies he was a part of.
30:44Two notable ones come from his interactions with Tom Holland
30:47as the web-slinger in Captain America Civil War and Spider-Man Homecoming.
30:52The first comes when Tony is talking to Peter in the latter's bedroom.
30:56Holland missed his mark, so Downey simply told him to move.
31:01It's such a quick line, but easily shows how Downey knows his character so well.
31:13Meanwhile, the entire hug scene in the car is one that came out of Holland spontaneously
31:19deciding to try to hug his co-star, who quickly gave the line that had producers laughing.
31:31Number 19
31:38You're stranded in the middle of outer space with no prospects of ever being able to get home.
31:44Thankfully, you're not alone, but what do you do with your time?
31:47If you're Nebula in Iron Man, you sit at a table and fling paper footballs at each other.
31:52It's a nice bonding moment for the two heroes,
32:02but it may not have been part of the original script.
32:04Nebula actor Karen Gillan revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter
32:08that the entire scene was improvised.
32:11Turns out the practice paid off later in the movie,
32:14when we see Stark flick Ant-Man in very much the same way.
32:23Number 18
32:31The superhero landing and fighting poses are two of the most common tropes of the genre.
32:37For the latter, Black Widow has been seen with a very particular stance,
32:41especially when she flings her hair around like she's in a shampoo commercial.
32:53In the 2021 Black Widow film, we meet Natasha's sister Yelena,
33:01who could easily go up against Tony Stark in a quipping match.
33:05During a conversation with the stunt team about Yelena's own pose,
33:08actor Florence Pugh was not a fan of the idea at all.
33:13Her discussion of how unrealistic some of the landings are
33:16inspired writer Eric Pearson to write a joke about them on the spot.
33:20It worked beautifully, as this was one gag that certainly stuck the landing.
33:30Number 17
33:34Another one of the great improvisational actors within the MCU has to be Paul Rudd.
33:39Long before he ever put on the Ant-Man suit,
33:42he was improving countless lines of dialogue in plenty of other films.
33:46So it's no surprise that he would inject a little bit of his own personality into Scott Lang.
33:57During the filming of Ant-Man, Rudd's character goes through a typical training montage,
34:02which includes learning how to punch from Hope.
34:05After taking one to the face, he quips back at her.
34:10This was apparently just one of several different takes with improvised dialogue from Rudd.
34:15We can't imagine what other great comebacks ended up on the cutting room floor.
34:19Number 16
34:24After Doctor Strange casts a spell that backfires and triggers the events of the movie,
34:29it all culminates at the Statue of Liberty.
34:32Despite his back and forth on whether Peter would be considered a friend,
34:35by the end of all of it, it's made clear that Strange cares deeply for the kid.
34:40This is made all the more evident with an improvised moment around the final casting of the spell.
34:45So cast a new spell, but this time make everyone forget who Peter Parker is.
34:48Make everyone forget...
34:52me.
34:53No.
34:54But it would work, right?
34:55Yeah, it would work.
34:56Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland were struggling to get one scene right,
35:00when Cumberbatch had the idea to initially reject Spidey's suggestion
35:04to have everyone really forget him this time.
35:06It gave the moment a heavier tone and showed how far the two had come together.
35:11I'll see you around.
35:12So long, kid.
35:16Number 15
35:20It may not be the most successful of the Thor films,
35:24but The Dark World does have a few highlights,
35:26and ultimately helps shape future MCU outings.
35:29In an interview with Marvel head Kevin Feige,
35:32he admitted the eventual third Thor movie was largely inspired from comedic moments
35:37in the previous films.
35:38One of the more memorable ones sees Thor walk into Jane's apartment,
35:42and casually hang Mjolnir on a coat rack like it's nothing more than a fancy hat.
35:46The whole world is going crazy.
35:48All the stuff we saw is spreading.
35:50Completely improvised by Chris Hemsworth,
35:53it was one of the earlier signs that he was meant to have a more comedic presence.
35:58Number 14
36:02Easily one of the best aspects of Thor Ragnarok
36:05is the influx of comedy from Chris Hemsworth.
36:09Ow.
36:10Just had to be sure.
36:11We'd seen a little here and there,
36:13but this third outing for Thor really gives him some great spots to crack a few jokes.
36:19One classic moment involves Thor telling a story
36:21about how Loki had transformed into a snake and tried to kill him.
36:25There was one time when we were children,
36:27he transformed himself into a snake and he knows that I love snakes.
36:30So I went to pick up the snake to admire it,
36:32and he transformed back into himself and he was like,
36:34Yeah, it's me.
36:35And he stabbed me.
36:36We were eight at the time.
36:38According to director Taika Waititi,
36:40it was one of six different variations they shot,
36:43all involving Hemsworth just making the story up as they went along.
36:47We love the idea of being so spontaneous,
36:49but we also can't help but wonder if Loki's grin is real
36:53or if that's just Tom Hiddleston trying not to burst out laughing.
36:57Number 13
37:02The death of a major character from any franchise
37:04would be incredibly daunting for the actors involved.
37:07So when a director asks the performers to simply improv the whole thing,
37:12the pressure added is tenfold.
37:14Such was the case for Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen
37:17when it came time to film Vision's death.
37:20We are out of time.
37:23I can't.
37:24Yes, you can.
37:26You can.
37:27Ask in the moment to just improv it.
37:30The two actors were terrified,
37:32but went ahead and did their best.
37:34Both also claim they felt the whole moment was quote,
37:37ridiculous,
37:38so it was horrifying to try and come up with a variation of the scene on their own.
37:42Thankfully, between their performances and fantastic ending,
37:46we got an amazing send-off of sorts for Vision.
38:05Number 12
38:06I love you guys.
38:07Spider-Man No Way Home
38:09The moment Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appeared in Spider-Man No Way Home,
38:14audiences were rejoicing everywhere.
38:17As special as it was for fans,
38:19it was an even bigger deal for the actors.
38:30It being incredibly rare to have them all together on one set,
38:34them playing their original characters simultaneously must have been beyond surreal.
38:39So it comes as no surprise that the trio would be somewhat emotional about the whole thing.
38:43This actually played out on screen in a quick line uttered by Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker,
38:48just as they swing back into battle.
38:58Garfield went on record saying it was just something he wanted to tell them all.
39:01Now we love him even more.
39:04Number 11
39:05Get Help! Thor Ragnarok
39:08Another great one from Thor's third outing is the hilarious Get Help! scene.
39:24Word has it that director Taika Waititi was very keen on having a lot of improv on the set of Thor Ragnarok.
39:30And perhaps combining that with his unique style
39:32is why it's generally considered to be the best Thor movie so far.
39:36During one interview, Tom Hiddleston noted that he and Chris Hemsworth
39:40had been prompted by Waititi to play on their character's childhood.
39:44Hence, Get Help! was born.
39:54Despite Loki's objection,
39:56Tom Hiddleston has said it was his favorite improvised scene.
40:00Number 10
40:01Liar! Avengers Endgame
40:06Given just how jam-packed this movie was with stories, characters, and action,
40:10you'd be forgiven for not remembering this blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in Avengers Endgame.
40:15After being rescued from space by Captain Marvel,
40:17Tony Stark returns to the Avengers compound emotionally and physically defeated.
40:22Despite this, he finds the strength to confront Steve Rogers over his role
40:26in failing to stop Thanos in the previous film.
40:30Who told you that?
40:31You're a fighter.
40:32No, he wiped my face with a planet while the Bleecker Street magician gave away the store.
40:37During this stirring tirade, Robert Downey Jr. decided to insert a single word
40:41into his character's dialogue that serves as the perfect reminder
40:45that the events of Civil War are still fresh in his mind.
40:48No trust, liar!
40:51Tony calling Steve a liar was improvised,
40:53with director Anthony Russo calling the moment, quote,
40:56one of Downey's most inspired.
40:59Number 9
41:00Peck Touch
41:01Captain America The First Avenger
41:04Women aren't exactly lined up to dance with the guy they might step on.
41:07Steve Rogers' transformation from scrawny kid to buff super soldier
41:11is one of the MCU's most iconic moments.
41:14However, it wouldn't have worked if Chris Evans had not fully committed
41:18to getting eye-bogglingly jacked.
41:20Much to the delight of fans, Evans pulled it off,
41:24emerging from the procedure with bulging muscles
41:26worthy of the legendary comic book character.
41:29It's clear from Hayley Atwell's performance in the scene
41:32that fans were not the only ones taken aback by Evans' shredded physique.
41:36While shooting, Atwell impulsively reached out to touch Evans' pecs,
41:40and the filmmakers decided to keep the ad-lib in the finished product.
41:52Atwell spoke about the incident in an interview,
41:54quipping that she couldn't quite help herself when confronted by Evans' man-boobs.
41:59I couldn't quite help myself during the scene.
42:02It was the first time I saw him, it was the first time I was that close,
42:04so I just kind of touched them gently.
42:07Number 8
42:08Nick Fury tries to talk sense into Spidey
42:11Spider-Man Far From Home
42:19Samuel L. Jackson is known for his profanity-laced dialogue,
42:22so it should come as no surprise that he decided to spice up his lines
42:26in Spider-Man Far From Home.
42:28This crops up in the scene in which he attempts to convince Peter Parker
42:31to help him and Mysterio defeat the Elementals.
42:34Initially, Peter is hesitant to lend a hand,
42:37quipping that the situation feels a little extreme
42:39for a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man like himself.
42:42Mr. Fury, this all seems like big-time, you know, huge superhero kind of stuff,
42:47and I mean, I'm just a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, sir.
42:50Nick Fury doesn't skip a beat in reminding Peter
42:53that he's less than a year removed from being on another planet,
42:57and Jackson and Jake Gyllenhaal both confirmed
43:00that the former added a little something extra to ensure that line truly hit home.
43:06Number 7
43:07Nick Fury sneaks a peek
43:09Captain Marvel
43:17Samuel L. Jackson strikes again!
43:19It turns out that one of Captain Marvel's funniest moments,
43:21and there were plenty,
43:23was improvised by the longtime MCU star.
43:25During the scene in which Nick Fury and Keller
43:28examine the now-deceased Skrull that had been impersonating Agent Coulson,
43:31Fury decides to check what's under the alien's proverbial hood.
43:35It's totally in line with the character's curious nature,
43:38and we wouldn't have been surprised to learn that it was in the original script.
43:42However, that little moment was all Jackson.
43:45Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck loved the ad-lib,
43:48and decided to keep it in the finished product.
43:50You'll hear no complaints from us.
43:52Wow, they're ugly bastards, aren't they?
43:55Number 6
43:56Beyoncé, Dr. Strange
44:14The relationship that Dr. Stephen Strange and Wong share
44:17is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most underrated.
44:20Perhaps it's because both characters are played by actors named Benedict.
44:24One of their best moments also happened to be 100% improvised by Benedict Cumberbatch.
44:30According to Benedict Wong,
44:32Cumberbatch would throw all sorts of silly lines at him while filming,
44:36simply to see what kind of reaction he could provoke.
44:41So, when Strange calls Wong Beyoncé early in the film,
44:45the latter's look of stoic confusion was not fake.
44:51The filmmakers doubled down on the joke later on,
44:55with Wong jamming out to Beyoncé's single ladies put a ring on it while reading.
45:06Number 5
45:07Hey Auntie, Black Panther
45:09You'd be hard-pressed to deny that Killmonger is one of the MCU's best villains.
45:14He's intelligent, ruthless, cares about his people,
45:17and has a backstory that audiences can sympathize with.
45:21The character was brilliantly portrayed by Michael B. Jordan,
45:32who clearly felt comfortable enough in Killmonger's skin
45:35to improvise this awesome line of dialogue.
45:37The ad-lib comes after meeting his relatives for the first time.
45:40During this shocking reveal,
45:42Jordan decided to throw a little salt in the wound,
45:44referring to the Queen Mother as Auntie with enough arrogance to make Thanos proud.
45:51Number 4
45:52Spider-Man's Last Words
45:54Avengers Infinity War
46:00You may want to break out a box of tissues for this next entry,
46:03because it's often considered one of the saddest in the history of the MCU.
46:07Having just lost to Thanos,
46:09Tony is stunned to see his comrades starting to disintegrate before his eyes.
46:13Spider-Man is one of the last ones standing,
46:15but soon collapses into his mentor's arms.
46:21His cries of I don't wanna go were improvised on the spot,
46:29though director Joe Russo also deserves credit.
46:32Russo told Holland before shooting to, quote,
46:34act like you don't wanna go.
46:36Tom Holland turned the direction into dialogue,
46:38and his performance totally sells it.
46:50Number 3
46:51Gamora, Gamora, Gamora
46:53Avengers Infinity War
47:01Hot take alert,
47:03Drax is the funniest character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
47:06Need proof?
47:07Just check out this scene in which he stupidly attempts to add something
47:11to a conversation between Tony Stark and Peter Quill,
47:14while lying beneath Tony's foot, we might add.
47:17I'll do you one better.
47:18Why is Gamora?
47:20This iconic and hilarious line was made up on the spot by Dave Bautista,
47:24who slipped it in after a few days on set.
47:26The only lines that were actually in the script were the ones spoken by Tony and Peter.
47:30Drax's line was simply Bautista becoming one with his character.
47:34We tip our caps to this mountain of a man,
47:36and his ability to catch everything that goes over his head.
47:39Nothing goes over my head.
47:41My reflexes are too fast.
47:43I wouldn't catch it.
47:44I'm gonna die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy.
47:48Number 2
47:49He's a friend from work.
47:51Thor Ragnarok
47:52Owing to the fact that this line was splashed across promotional material for Thor Ragnarok,
47:57you'd be forgiven for thinking it took a team of writers months to come up with.
48:01Alas, Thor's hilarious exclamation upon seeing Hulk on the planet Sakaar for the first time,
48:06was in actuality the brainchild of, well, a child.
48:10A kid from the Make-A-Wish Foundation was visiting the set one day,
48:14and told Chris Hemsworth that he should say the line when he encounters Hulk in the arena.
48:18Hey, we know each other.
48:21He's a friend from work.
48:22Hemsworth loved it, director Taika Waititi loved it,
48:25and the rest, as they say, is history.

48:46I Am Iron Man
48:47Iron Man
48:48It's been a while since I was in front of you.
48:51I figure I'll stick to the cards this time.
48:54In the pantheon of iconic MCU lines, one stands above the rest.
48:59I am Iron Man.
49:02Tony Stark's debut film, Iron Man,
49:05Tony Stark's declaration at the end of the first Iron Man movie
49:09is the stuff of legend,
49:10with the superhero breaking convention
49:12by throwing the well-worn trope of secret identities to the wind.
49:16The line is quintessential Tony,
49:19making it all the more shocking when you discover that Robert Downey Jr.
49:22made it up on the spot.
49:24The reaction from fans was instantaneous,
49:26with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige later admitting
49:29that it inspired him not to be, quote,
49:31afraid to adapt and evolve and to change things.
49:34The line reappeared in Avengers Endgame,
49:37serving as the perfect bookend to Tony's character arc.
49:50Which unscripted moment impressed you the most?
49:52Let us know in the comments.
49:53You look like an avocado.
49:55Had sex with an older, more disgusting avocado.
49:58Yeah.
