00:00Now, this is such a sensitive issue with quite strong feelings on both sides, sometimes with
00:05kind of threatening arguments on one side.
00:09And I wonder to what degree you had to think about the potential backlash to your academic
00:14career in tackling this particular subject.
00:18I was concerned about it initially, knowing that there's been so much emotion wrapped
00:23up in all of these issues.
00:26And it was clear that academics who had raised questions about the pandemic response often
00:32were subjected to reputational attacks.
00:36So there was some hesitance in taking on the topic.
00:41But as we've completed the book and since it's been published, what we've discovered
00:46is that in many ways, we're just pushing on an open door, that there is a willingness
00:50now to revisit the decisions of the past and to reflect on them.
00:55And that is, in the end, what the book is.
00:57It's an early history.
00:59We take a look at the decisions that were made and what the consequences were of a very
01:05critical period in U.S. and world history.
