00:00:00This morning I tell you about the Waqf Amendment Bill.
00:00:04It's been cleared now in both houses of the parliament and discussions going into midnight.
00:00:09Rajya Sabha was where the final hurdle was for the ruling part of the government.
00:00:14They've been able to clear after a late night debate again.
00:00:17So what happened to the Rajya Sabha?
00:00:19128 votes for, 95 votes against the Waqf Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
00:00:25And then Jai Shri Ram slogan hearing was also heard.
00:00:27They're calling it the Umeed Bill passing the parliament test.
00:00:31Remember three days of marathon debate and discussion by parliamentarians in both houses.
00:00:37Let's listen in to JPC Chairperson Jagdambika Patil.
00:00:40The eyes have it, the eyes have it, the eyes have it.
00:00:43The Bill is passed.
00:00:57Item number 12 or 13.
00:01:28We are satisfied that the government has accepted all our recommendations and amendments.
00:01:35This also strengthens the parliamentary democracy created by the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
00:01:41If the government wanted, it could have passed this Bill directly from the Lok Sabha Rajya Sabha when it was introduced.
00:01:47But today, on the recommendations made by JPC, an amended Bill is being passed.
00:01:53It is clear that all the stakeholders of the country will be concerned.
00:01:58A Bill passed, those in favour will please say aye.
00:02:03Those against will please say no.
00:02:08I think the eyes have it, the eyes have it, the eyes have it.
00:02:14The Bill is passed.
00:02:24The eyes have it, the eyes have it.
00:02:27It passed.
00:02:28So full on heated debates remember that we witnessed in the parliament.
00:02:32Amit Bhardwaj joining me for the latest on that.
00:02:36Amit, for the viewer tuning in this morning, tell us all that happened during this late night debate
00:02:41and then ending it with a Jai Shri Ram slogan hearing.
00:02:46Good morning Pooja.
00:02:47Good morning Pooja.
00:02:48You know, many of our viewers must be still waking up to the fact that this manner and fashion
00:02:54the Vax Amendment Bill has been passed in Rajya Sabha.
00:02:58You know, we have rarely seen any Bill being discussed at this length
00:03:04and the voting for every amendment being sought in the house
00:03:08and the decisions being sought in the house
00:03:10and eventually the ruling party or the ruling alliance winning it beyond their numbers as well.
00:03:16Beyond what was expected as well.
00:03:18You know, yesterday when I was speaking to one of the members who was supposed to
00:03:22go for the parliament session in the upper house and cast his vote,
00:03:26he did mention that by the time we'll return, saree patal jayatee.
00:03:31And that literally happened, you know.
00:03:33While the date was changed as well, this is also going to have a major shift
00:03:38in the kind of politics we'll have in the country next year or so
00:03:42because like we saw after CAA and RCA, certain kind of politics are shaped in the entire country
00:03:48with end block and mass voting by the Muslim community in the next, you know, Assam elections.
00:03:53So is it going to trigger a similar kind of effect? That's the big question.
00:03:57But as far as the upper house proceedings are concerned,
00:04:01yesterday we saw the debate beginning around noon with the opposition MPs
00:04:07who were also part of the JPC by the way, like Naseh Posen, Sanjay Singh,
00:04:13all these members, you know, picking up poles in the lot, seeking amendment.
00:04:18Many of these MPs were also saying that the bill should be sent back for further discussion.
00:04:25For instance, the TNC MPs thought that particular move as well.
00:04:30However, the government's number for division of the passing of the bill is 128
00:04:36and the opposition got 95 which means that the NDA surpassed its own projected number
00:04:42which was supposed to be 125. So three members, this is likely from the BJD.
00:04:47So parties like BJD, YRCG, they will also face a lot of questions.
00:04:52So there will be a certain, an introspection check that will happen on possibly who from which alliance parties
00:04:59or an opposition possibly voted for the NDA as well. Thank you very much for now.
00:05:04Amit Bhardwaj is telling us what exactly happened.
00:05:07But remember the government ruling party elated.
00:05:10They are applauding, clapping, Jai Shri Ram slogan hearing.
00:05:13Here's what opposition did.
00:05:16Let's take a look at that big news coming in about opposition up in arms against the Waqf-e-Jadid.
00:05:21The opposition members of parliament vowed to continue to protest against the bill.
00:05:33Malik Arjun Khadge, the LOP Rajya Sabha and Congress President says
00:05:38government took a negative stand on the Waqf.
00:05:41The bill is not in the best interest of the Samvidhan, of the constitution
00:05:45and we will continue to protest against it.
00:05:48Let's listen in to Malik Arjun.
00:06:12So the parliament giving an approval now to the Waqf amendment bill.
00:06:16It was two days, in fact I would say two nights of fiery debate over the Waqf amendment bill
00:06:20both in Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha successfully passed in both houses.
00:06:24Now the Lok Sabha approving the bill by a majority of 288 approvals.
00:06:28Out of total 245, 128 MPs in Rajya Sabha voted in favour.
00:06:3495 MPs voted against the bill.
00:06:37So these are the numbers coming in for both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for you.
00:06:41Congress and other opposition parties still voicing displeasure.
00:06:44They are saying this is infringement on Muslim community and rights of minorities.
00:06:48J.P. Nadda, the leader of house in the Rajya Sabha and BJP president has hit back at the opposition
00:06:52accusing them of trying to create fear among Muslims and spreading misinformation.
00:07:14The Supreme Court has returned the case to the Huberi-Darbar Municipal Corporation.
00:07:18There is a case of Aneesa Ayasaf v. Tamil Nadu Waqf Board.
00:07:21There is a case of Telangana State v. Muhammad Muzaffar.
00:07:23There is a case of Himachal Pradesh Waqf Board v. Khwaja Khalilullah.
00:07:27And Mr. Sabapati, a claim has been made on Taj Mahal.
00:07:31Now I would like to ask, and the Supreme Court has said in its judgement
00:07:34that this is a written order from the Shah Jahan era.
00:07:37Then we will believe whether there is a claim on it or not.
00:07:40Just think, if the law of this era would have been followed in the same way,
00:07:44then what would have happened?
00:07:46Mr. John Bittas and Mr. Manoj Jha had said a lot of things.
00:07:49They had said something about a thirst.
00:07:51They had mentioned the graham stones of Odisha.
00:07:53In that, the government of Congress could not do the inquiry of CBI.
00:07:56But when the statement of Taj Mahal comes, Mr. Sabapati,
00:07:59then I remember a thirst.
00:08:01When Shah Jahan was in jail and used to see Taj Mahal from a distance,
00:08:04and he used to get only one bottle of water,
00:08:06and he asked Aurangzeb to send one more bottle of water,
00:08:09then you know, he refused.
00:08:11So, being sad, Shah Jahan wrote in Farsi,
00:08:13Oh, you are a strange Muslim,
00:08:15who thirsts for water of a living father.
00:08:18You are the last Hindu,
00:08:20who thirsts for water of a dead father.
00:08:23Meaning, what kind of a Muslim are you,
00:08:25who thirsts for water of a living father?
00:08:27You are the last of those Hindus,
00:08:29who give water to the dead father in Pitra Paksha.
00:08:32The opposition had no logic.
00:08:34I don't think they believed in the logic they had.
00:08:39The public also did not believe.
00:08:41Yesterday, after passing in Lok Sabha,
00:08:43it was confirmed that it will be in Rajya Sabha,
00:08:45because the happiness of the public outside,
00:08:48after passing in Lok Sabha,
00:08:50we all could see it.
00:08:51It was seen in the newspapers.
00:08:53It was known by talking to people.
00:08:56We are happy that today,
00:08:58this historic bill was passed.
00:09:01A law was made.
00:09:02125 to 92 on the amendment,
00:09:06and 128 to 95 for the passing of the bill.
00:09:12So, in any case, they had the majority,
00:09:14they had it in the Lok Sabha,
00:09:15they had it in the Rajya Sabha,
00:09:16but you can see the division in the country,
00:09:19even in terms of the numbers,
00:09:21because there are substantial numbers,
00:09:23which have opposed the bill.
00:09:25So, this will have political implications,
00:09:28and especially in respect of political parties,
00:09:31who have given the support to the BJP,
00:09:34because there is an election in Bihar coming.
00:09:37And of course, it makes very little difference
00:09:39to the TDP,
00:09:40because their elections are far away.
00:09:42But, at least, historically,
00:09:45they will be remembered for having supported the bill.
00:09:49The BJP stood strongly against this bill.
00:09:53This is a non-constitutional bill that has been passed,
00:09:56and the provisions of this bill are very controversial.
00:10:00This is the beginning of taking over religious properties.
00:10:03And I believe that in the coming days,
00:10:06they will take over the lands of the Gurudwara,
00:10:10they will take over the lands of the churches,
00:10:12they will take over the lands of Jainism,
00:10:16they will take over the lands of Buddhism,
00:10:18and they will take over the lands of the temples.
00:10:20Their only goal is to give their friends
00:10:22the land of religious properties.
00:10:24This is a very serious issue.
00:10:27I believe that this will show the mood of the people.
00:10:34This is the first thing.
00:10:35There is no strong support in this.
00:10:38This has been deliberately misused
00:10:41and has not been imposed forcefully.
00:10:46Number two,
00:10:47I have no doubt that if a challenge is given to this,
00:10:53then there is a very good chance
00:10:56that the judiciary will consider it unconstitutional.
00:11:00Especially under section 26 and 25.
00:11:19I don't have to say all this.
00:11:21But who were responsible for the riots in Gujarat?
00:11:26Tell me.
00:11:33Honourable,
00:11:34I am listening to the entire interview carefully.
00:11:40Honourable member Sudhanshuji did not name Digvijay Singh.
00:11:46Now he stands up and says,
00:11:49This has been proven.
00:11:52And there is still a chance.
00:11:54There is still a chance.
00:11:56You have not said that the RSS was involved in the attack on 26-11.
00:12:02So now stand up, turn on the mic and call me.
00:12:09There is another objection.
00:12:10I have never said this.
00:12:12This is your publicity.
00:12:14My objection was that
00:12:16all the honourable members have said a lot
00:12:20that such and such Muslims were on our side
00:12:23and such and such Muslims were on our side.
00:12:26This is an insult to the entire society.
00:12:32And Honourable Comrade,
00:12:34Honourable Home Minister,
00:12:36when you were there,
00:12:38when the riots took place,
00:12:40what was your role?
00:12:42Honourable Home Minister.
00:13:13President's rule as a debate on Manipur
00:13:18also heated up in the Parliament.
00:13:20Amit Shah slamming the Congress party
00:13:22over the Manipur President's rule being imposed.
00:13:24Amit Shah said,
00:13:25President's rule in the North-Eastern state
00:13:27is not to topple the government.
00:13:29The Congress wanted to topple the government.
00:13:31Under Congress, Manipur had a 225-day curfew.
00:13:34Remember, while Manipur has been a conflict zone for decades now,
00:13:38but in the past two years,
00:13:40we have seen massive law and order situations,
00:13:42ethnic bloody conflict.
00:13:44And Home Minister Amit Shah had this to say
00:13:46with regard to the charge between him and the Congress party.
00:13:53On 11th February,
00:13:55the Chief Minister resigned.
00:13:59And everyone is saying in the newspaper
00:14:04that the Congress party was bringing a proposal of distrust against him.
00:14:10Manipur, I want to make it clear on record
00:14:14that there was no proposal of distrust in front of the government
00:14:19because the Congress party does not have enough members
00:14:23to bring a proposal of distrust.
00:14:26The Chief Minister resigned.
00:14:30After that,
00:14:33BJP's 37 members,
00:14:39NPP's 6 members,
00:14:41NPF's 5 members,
00:14:43JDU's 1 member,
00:14:45and Congress's 5 members
00:14:48did not make any claim.
00:14:50When no one claimed to have formed a government,
00:14:55the President decided to put the government in a state of distrust.
00:15:02Now, to say in this way
00:15:06that the President's government was put in a state of distrust
00:15:10is not a solution.
00:15:13Manipur,
00:15:15the President's government was put in a state of distrust on 13th February.
00:15:19Zero violence in November.
00:15:22Zero violence in December.
00:15:25Zero violence in January.
00:15:28Zero violence till March 13th.
00:15:31Zero violence till today.
00:15:34So, we should not try to create a kind of distrust.
00:16:0125,753 appointments of teaching
00:16:06and the non-teaching staff in 2016 job for cash scam.
00:16:10The top court has said the entire selection process was tainted.
00:16:14Apex court mentioning that there was a cover-up of the scam
00:16:17that has damaged the integrity of the selection process.
00:16:19Bharatiya Janata Party jumping in to mock the TMC government
00:16:22saying Bengal government has failed the state
00:16:24but importantly how there was a cover-up also in this case.
00:16:27They are demanding Mamata Banerjee's resignation.
00:16:29But Bengal CM also as always hitting back.
00:16:31She is accusing BJP government of targeting Bengal
00:16:34saying she stands with the teachers,
00:16:36will be ready to go to jail if BJP wants.
00:16:40There are lot of teachers who lost their jobs.
00:16:43They have gathered over here
00:16:45and they are discussing regarding the order
00:16:48which came out today on Friday
00:16:50and where the Chief Justice of India
00:16:53has said the interest selection process is
00:16:55vitiated by manipulation and fraud
00:16:57and credibility and legitimacy is denoted.
00:17:00And after coming out this order
00:17:02all those teachers who lost their jobs
00:17:04have gathered over here at this planet area
00:17:07and they are discussing with each other
00:17:09but they are not considering this order as justice.
00:17:11They are stating that this is total injustice
00:17:14they have got from the Apex court
00:17:16after challenging the order of Kolkata High Court also.
00:17:18And right now they have no idea what to do.
00:17:21Right now they are discussing,
00:17:22they are to discuss with their advocate
00:17:24what is the legal process and what to do right now.
00:17:26With camera person Tapas Wari,
00:17:28this is Rajesh Shah for India Today, Kolkata.
00:17:57There is a way out.
00:17:59There is a review petition.
00:18:01We will do the review petition
00:18:03and after that the procedure will be done.
00:18:05This is not a judgement.
00:18:07This is very wrong.
00:18:09We just have to say that we have not made any mistake.
00:18:11So what is the punishment?
00:18:13Now prove the mistake.
00:18:15First, the data submitted by CBI
00:18:17there is a complete list of tainted and untainted candidates.
00:18:23So what is the punishment for us?
00:18:26We are not in any list of tainted candidates.
00:18:29We are totally untainted.
00:18:31So what is the punishment for us?
00:18:33Why have we lost our jobs?
00:18:35As a citizen of this country,
00:18:37I have every right.
00:18:39I respect the judge
00:18:43but I cannot accept the judgement.
00:18:45I can express some opinion about the verdict
00:18:49from the humanitarian point of view.
00:19:19Have the schools collapsed?
00:19:21Has the education system collapsed?
00:19:23Is this the target of the BJP government?
00:19:27How much more will they target Bangla?
00:19:29With respect to the High Court,
00:19:31Kolkata High Court has given several verdicts
00:19:33against our state government
00:19:35but that has been squashed
00:19:37in the Supreme Court.
00:19:39This time it did not happen.
00:19:41This time the Supreme Court has prevailed
00:19:43in the verdict of the High Court.
00:19:45So we again say
00:19:47that we believe in the judiciary
00:19:49and the Supreme Court.
00:19:51So we respect the verdict.
00:19:53But we will say
00:19:55that we have faith in Mamata ji.
00:19:59Mamata ji called a meeting
00:20:01with the education department
00:20:03this afternoon.
00:20:05Mamata Banerjee's government
00:20:07has been slapped.
00:20:11Mamata Banerjee's government
00:20:13has slapped
00:20:15Mamata Banerjee and her party
00:20:17have sold their jobs.
00:20:19Today,
00:20:21because of this verdict
00:20:23of the Apex Court of India
00:20:25it has been proved.
00:20:27And even after this,
00:20:29Mamata Banerjee is able to
00:20:31come in front of the media
00:20:33and show her face.
00:20:35We have never seen such a shameless Chief Minister
00:20:37in our history.
00:20:39I am saying this
00:20:41because
00:20:43first of all
00:20:45it is unbearable.
00:20:47It does not look good.
00:20:49So many boys and girls
00:20:53were shocked.
00:20:57But
00:20:59only Yatin Amol
00:21:01is responsible
00:21:03for this.
00:21:05Only Yatin Amol
00:21:07is responsible for this.
00:21:09That is why I am saying
00:21:11to the youth,
00:21:13to the society
00:21:15that as soon as possible
00:21:17free yourself
00:21:19from this government.
00:36:25The big news meanwhile coming in this morning
00:36:29It's with regard to the Waqf bill.
00:36:31It's been cleared in both houses of the Parliament
00:36:33but after clearly a midnight, late night discussions and debates
00:36:35the Government elated and cheered
00:36:37Prime Minister Modi hails
00:36:39bill passage in the Parliament after debate and discussions. Even the member of the Prime
00:36:43Minister is right now is on a visit to Thailand. Prime Minister Modi has sent out a message
00:36:47thanking the members of Parliament who voted in favour of the Vak bill. I quote him here.
00:36:52Gratitude to all members of the Parliament who participated in the Parliamentary and
00:36:56Committee discussions, voiced their perspective and contributed to strengthening of these
00:37:01legislations. A special thanks to countless people who sent valuable inputs to the Parliamentary
00:37:05Committee. The importance of extensive dialogue and debate has been reaffirmed.
00:37:12Then he has added about Vakf. Prime Minister Modi says, the Vakf system was synonymous with
00:37:18lack of transparency and accountability. This harmed the interests especially of Muslim women,
00:37:23poor Muslims, Basmanda Muslims. The legislations passed by the Parliament will boost transparency,
00:37:28safeguard people's rights. We will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern
00:37:33and sensitive to social justice. We remain committed to prioritising dignity of all.
00:37:39My colleague Amit Bhardwa joining me for the latest on that. So that's a big statement Amit
00:37:44coming in from Prime Minister Modi. But apart from congratulating over the debate and discussion
00:37:48that happened in Parliamentary behaviour, he also goes on to mention why the Vakf amendments
00:37:53were important and he says it will benefit Muslims more, especially underprivileged Muslims.
00:37:57All right, Pooja, this is the first reaction coming from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We
00:38:05know for a matter of fact that when this bill was taken up in the Lok Sabha and later on in
00:38:11the upper house after the Lok Sabha proceedings, the Prime Minister was not in the country to
00:38:16attend the proceedings. But it appears that he has been keeping a very close eye on the
00:38:22developments of the upper house as the bill was taken up in the Rajya Sabha. And we have to
00:38:28underline two major statements within that long statement that has come up on the microblogging
00:38:34site X. So what he's essentially saying that this will mark a shift in the era where the backward
00:38:42Muslims, the poor Muslims and the women Muslim, all three sections, Pashmandas, backward and women
00:38:48will be getting the representation in the Vakf board. And remember, the Bharatiya Janata Party in
00:38:54the campaign for the Vakf amendment bill, why I'm saying campaign because it was not only in the
00:39:00Lok Sabha or the Parliament that this bill was taken up. Rather, there was a thorough course of
00:39:06you know, deliberation and dialogue that happened with the joint parliamentary committee being in
00:39:11place on Vakf board and the BJP also choose to reach out to the community members. Because
00:39:16remember, many of these stakeholders had been coming to the JPC to give their reviews as well.
00:39:23And that is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also thanking everyone who came up came forward
00:39:28to give their suggestions, their amendments, their review feedback on the Vakf amendment bill. And
00:39:36it's very clearly that is why underlining that with this passage of the Vakf amendment bill,
00:39:42which has been now, you know, made into an act, the Pashmandas, the backward Muslims and the women
00:39:48Muslim will get their representation in the Vakf amendment act 2024. Once that you know, the gadget
00:39:54notification is issued number one. Number two, he also says that this marks the beginning of era of
00:40:00modern and transparent Vakf board because there has been this central argument while this bill
00:40:06was being deliberated upon in the upper house and as well as the Lok Sabha that the present
00:40:13structure of the Vakf... And the charges of land grab was also escalating and that's one of the
00:40:18reasons that the reforms and the amendments have been brought in. Amit, keep tracking the latest
00:40:22because the opposition is still not convinced. So here's what has happened. In case you're tuning
00:40:25in this morning, wondering what unfolded in the Rajya Sabha late last night, the Vakf amendment
00:40:31bill has been cleared in both houses of the parliament, Lok Sabha first, Rajya Sabha.
00:40:35Discussions going late into the night but at least there were parliamentary level discussions
00:40:39and debates that were happening from both sides. Here's what has happened, the numbers.
00:40:43In Lok Sabha, the bill was approved by a majority of 288 approvals. In the Rajya Sabha, the strength
00:40:49is 245, 128 MPs voted in favor, 95 MPs voted against the Vakf amendment bill. Congress and
00:40:57other parties still voicing their concern, they're still calling it an infringement on Muslim rights
00:41:01and rights of minorities. J.P. Nadda, leader of house in Rajya Sabha says that this has been
00:41:06misinformation that opposition's been spreading.
00:41:31Himachal Pradesh Vakf vote versus Khwaja Khalilullah case.
00:42:31Now, government has made a certain amendments and now government has just categorically said
00:42:48Home Minister Amit Shah ji, now they are only opposition people, they are misleading to the
00:42:54country, they are misleading to the Muslims. Now, if this amendment will be enacted,
00:42:59your mosque, graveyard, wave yards and khanqah will be taken by the government. But study has
00:43:06said that Vakf will remain Vakf. Mutawalli will be only from Muslim community, Waqif will be also
00:43:13from Muslim community. We are not going to interfere in any Vakf. Only we are concerned
00:43:19that now Vakf should remain as a Vakf and only the administration of the Vakf, it should not be
00:43:27sold out by some Mutawalli or caretaker and the income of that Vakf should go to the common man.
00:44:27So, this bill has been passed, it is a historical bill and it is such a bill in which the poor,
00:44:45backward Muslims will benefit from it. The Abhijat sect of Muslims used to rule over it,
00:44:55but now the poor and backward people will also get a chance.
00:45:25So, today this historic bill has been passed, a law has been made.
00:45:30Look, this is their interpretation. We have put our interpretation in front of them,
00:45:38but if they do not agree, it means that they have already taken a negative stand,
00:45:47they are moving it forward.
00:45:49This is a very serious issue. I think this shows the mood of the people of the country.
00:45:58This is the first thing. There is no strong support in this.
00:46:02They have deliberately misused their power and have been forced to pass this bill.
00:46:10Number two, I have no doubt that if a challenge is given to this,
00:46:17then there is a very good chance that the judiciary will consider it unconstitutional,
00:46:24especially under section 26 and 25 of the Constitution.
00:46:29125 to 92 on the amendment and 128 to 95 for the passing of the bill.
00:46:39So, in any case, they had the majority, they had it in the Lok Sabha, they had it in the Rajya Sabha.
00:46:44You can see the division in the country, even in terms of the numbers,
00:46:49because there are substantial numbers which have opposed the bill.
00:46:53So, this will have political implications and especially in respect of political parties
00:46:59who have given the support to the BJP because there is an election in Bihar coming.
00:47:05And of course, it makes very little difference to the TDP because their elections are far away.
00:47:10But at least historically, they will be remembered for having supported the bill.
00:47:40They will occupy the lands of Jainism, they will occupy the lands of Buddhism and they will occupy the lands of temples.
00:47:48Their only goal is to give their friends the land of religious heritage.
00:47:52In terms of the number, it was with the Sattar-Urdal, so the bill was passed.
00:47:58But the opposition kept their word all day, the debate went on for more than 12 hours,
00:48:04everyone kept their word and asked for a division on the basis of which the voting was done.
00:48:10And then the bill was passed, so it's okay, the opposition did their duty.
00:48:14The secular Indian history, this is a black day, there is no doubt.
00:48:18Like 1992, there is an incident, an unfortunate incident in Indian secular history.
00:48:26As we know that, that is the Babri Masjid demolition there.
00:48:31This is unconstitutional, this is against the spirit of Indian secularism,
00:48:37which is provided by the holy constitution, the Indian constitution.
00:48:41It would be a challenge before the court.
00:48:45So we can expect a good decision from their side.
00:48:51So remember that the bill has been cleared in both houses of the parliament.
00:48:55What happens next with the Waqf Amendment Bill? Details for you.
00:49:00The Waqf Amendment Bill cleared in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
00:49:02It will now be sent to the president for a final approval.
00:49:06Once the president gives an approval in it, that is when it turns into a law officially.
00:49:12The government will then issue a notification once the law is enacted.
00:49:16Opposition still has an option.
00:49:18The option is to challenge the amendment in the court, so explore the legal options in it.
00:49:24Courts could then decide whether the law stands or is safe.
00:49:29We'll go through a full protocol. First it is heading to the president.
00:49:41I'm taking you right now to the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand,
00:49:44where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a bilateral meeting
00:49:48with the Senior General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Aung Hlaing.
00:49:52This is important. Remember, he's in a country where there was this devastation
00:49:58because of the earthquake which primarily hit Myanmar.
00:50:00Of course, there were repercussions of it in Thailand as well,
00:50:04but the main damage and aftermath was in Myanmar.
00:50:07And a very crucial meeting, I must add here, among other countries,
00:50:12India was one of the first responders right away, while many other countries were promising, assuring.
00:50:18But India already sending in aircrafts, naval ships with emergency aid, rescue personnel.
00:50:25We have an Indian Army hospital, a field hospital that's been set up already.
00:50:28And this is to ensure on one side, like China has been trying to remember, push forward in Myanmar,
00:50:33but India already has been pitching in for assistance.
00:50:37I want to bring in Shashank Mattu, my colleague from India Today Global, for the latest on that.
00:50:42Shashank, good morning. Tell me more about this meeting.
00:50:45I'm sure possibly the rescue efforts were a part of the discussion too.
00:50:49What about India-Myanmar relationship?
00:50:52It is a relationship that India has been working to develop over the last couple of decades.
00:50:58In fact, it's been very difficult since 2021 especially,
00:51:01but since Myanmar had its civil war, the military junta, which is in power at this point in time,
00:51:06is clashing with a number of ethnic militias. It has not been doing extremely well.
00:51:10So it's a very complex situation for India,
00:51:13particularly because India has very, very valuable equities in Myanmar.
00:51:17One example of it is the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.
00:51:20This is something that Dr. Jayashankar has called a strategic game changer.
00:51:24It will link India physically to all of Southeast Asia.
00:51:27But that project has been stuck because of the civil war in Myanmar.
00:51:31So there is this desire to move these projects forward,
00:51:34but it hasn't really happened, hasn't materialized because of this war.
00:51:38So I think that's certainly going to be on the agenda for this meeting between India and Myanmar.
00:51:42Also a lot of conversation about security.
00:51:44Remember, there's a border that these two countries share.
00:51:47It has been at times a border across which there has been a flow of arms, of crime, and so on and so forth.
00:51:53And that is something that India and Myanmar will also be discussing extremely closely
00:51:57as this meeting takes place between the senior leaders.
00:52:02All right. Thank you very much, Ashank, for now.
00:52:04Remember, one of the main border concerns, the Rohingya issues, all of that emerging from Myanmar.
00:52:09And it's been a relationship with its highs and lows that we've had with Myanmar,
00:52:14but at least when it came to earthquake rescue and relief,
00:52:17India ensured that on humanitarian grounds, it pitched in right away.
00:52:21Now, Prime Minister Modi presently is on a visit to Thailand.
00:52:25This is the BIMSTEC Summit.
00:52:26These are very important Southeast Asian nations that have come together, seven nations, basically.
00:52:31Prime Minister will attend the summit.
00:52:33Regional grouping is expected to adopt the Bangkok Vision 2030.
00:52:37Summit has brought Prime Minister Modi face to face with the Bangladesh chief advisor,
00:52:42now Mohammad Yunus, who's leading the new government after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government.
00:52:47The duo for the first time seen sitting side by side.
00:52:50This was an official dinner.
00:52:51Look at the images on his screen.
00:52:53Hosted by the Thai Prime Minister, Shinwat, ahead of the BIMSTEC.
00:52:57The seating arrangement clearly fuels speculation if there could be a possible bilateral meeting
00:53:03on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit between India and Bangladesh,
00:53:06because Bangladesh definitely has been hopeful of it.
00:53:09They've already stirred a controversy though.
00:53:11Remember the recent comment of Yunus over China, Northeast and Bangladesh.
00:53:16I bring in Shashank Mattu here again from India Today Global.
00:53:20Shashank, that's definitely an interesting image.
00:53:23I wonder if there were certain tensions that could be felt in the air at that point.
00:53:29But tell me more about this relationship, because India was the country to give shelter to Sheikh Hasina.
00:53:35Yunus government was not happy with it.
00:53:37And then came in, of course, we've seen the kind of attacks and more.
00:53:41But where does India go ahead now with Yunus government?
00:53:45Well, it's been a very difficult situation between India and Bangladesh for the last couple of months.
00:53:51Really, there have been political tensions, there have been tensions over history,
00:53:56there have been tensions over how to handle border security issues.
00:54:00It has really been a difficult time in the India-Bangladesh relationship.
00:54:04And there's also concern on the diplomatic front, because we're seeing Yunus who's just gone to China.
00:54:09And he's also, of course, making inroads with making a closer relationship with Pakistan.
00:54:14That's something that India will obviously be extremely concerned about.
00:54:17So I think that a lot of those things are going to have to come up in the meeting between Prime Minister Modi
00:54:22and Mohammed Yunus that is scheduled for today.
00:54:24The two sides are really going to have to lay their cards on the table and try to figure out a way to ensure that
00:54:29even if relations are not extremely friendly, as they were between 2019 and 2029 to 2024,
00:54:34when Sheikh Hasein was in power, they should at least be stable.
00:54:38And various key projects, for example, connectivity projects that were going to link India and Bangladesh,
00:54:43that would bring the two countries much closer economically, those projects should continue.
00:54:47Even if the countries are not extremely friendly and warm towards each other, at least the political dispensations,
00:54:51there should at least be that cooperation that goes forward.
00:54:53So I think that would be the Indian perspective on moving these things forward.
00:54:56India will present its concerns, Bangladesh should present its concerns,
00:54:59and the idea will be how can we stabilize this relationship,
00:55:02how can we stop bickering in public as we have been over the last couple of months.
00:55:06Eventually, it's a neighbor nation with long historic cultural ethnic ties as well.
00:55:10Remember, it was one nation at one point.
00:55:12We'll be tracking of what happens with Yunus' government and look at that visual.
00:55:16Clearly, you can see not much of a chatter, discussion there,
00:55:20but perhaps a bilateral meeting could be on the cards.
00:55:24All right, top news coming in from Bengal right now.
00:55:26It's the teacher recruitment scam.
00:55:28This is going to be trouble possibly for the Mamata Banerjee government.
00:55:31It's already been a setback by the top court.
00:55:34The Supreme Court has upheld the Calcutta High Court order
00:55:37and cancelling 25,753 appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff.
00:55:44This was the 2016 incident that led to a jobs for cash scam for the teacher's appointment.
00:55:50The top court, in fact, has added that the whole selection process appears to be tainted.
00:55:55The apex court has said that's not it.
00:55:57There's been a cover-up of the scam.
00:55:59It's damaged the integrity of the selection process.
00:56:02Amid all of this, political showdown, BJP in opposition jumping at the TMC government
00:56:06saying that the Bengal government has failed the state.
00:56:09They are responsible for the scam and importantly for the cover-up.
00:56:13BJP is demanding Mamata Banerjee's resignation as well.
00:56:16But the Bengal CM, like we have seen in the past few days, hitting back right after the accusation
00:56:20saying the BJP government is deliberately targeting Bengal
00:56:23and that she will always stand with the teachers.
00:56:26There are a lot of teachers who lost their jobs.
00:56:29They have gathered over here and they are discussing regarding the order
00:56:34which came out today on Friday.
00:56:36And where the Chief Justice of India has said the interest selection process is vitiated
00:56:42by manipulation and fraud and credibility and legitimacy is denoted.
00:56:47And after coming out this order, all those teachers who lost their jobs have gathered over here
00:56:52at this planet area and they are discussing with each other.
00:56:55But they are not considering this order as justice.
00:56:58They are stating that this is totally injustice they have got from the apex court
00:57:02after challenging the order of Kolkata High Court also.
00:57:05And right now, they have no idea what to do.
00:57:08They are discussing with their advocate what is the legal process and what to do right now.
00:57:13With camera person Tapas Bhairi, this is Rajesh Shah for India Today, Kolkata.
00:57:39We have given the order.
00:57:42After this, there is a way, a review petition.
00:57:46We will do the review petition and after that, whatever procedure will be done, will be done.
00:57:51This is not a judgment, this is very wrong.
00:57:54This is what we have to say that we have not made any mistake.
00:57:57So what is the punishment?
00:57:59Now prove the mistake.
00:58:01First, the data submitted by CBI,
00:58:04there is a complete list of tainted and untainted candidates.
00:58:09So what punishment are we getting?
00:58:12We are not in any list of tainted candidates.
00:58:15We are totally untainted.
00:58:17Then what is the punishment?
00:58:19Why have we lost our jobs?
00:58:21As a citizen of this country, I have every right.
00:58:26But I am respecting the judge.
00:58:29I am not able to accept the judgment.
00:58:32I can express some opinion about the verdict from the humanitarian point of view.
00:59:02The future of teachers?
00:59:04Don't you forget that the education system has collapsed.
00:59:08Is this the target of the BJP government?
00:59:11How much more will they target Bangla?
00:59:15Respect to High Court.
00:59:17Kolkata High Court has given some verdicts against our state government many times.
00:59:22But that has been squashed in the Supreme Court.
00:59:26This time it did not happen.
00:59:28This time, the Supreme Court has prevailed the verdict of the High Court.
00:59:31So we again say that we believe in the judiciary and the Supreme Court.
00:59:36So we respect the verdict.
00:59:39But we will say that we have faith in Mamata ji.
00:59:44So Mamata ji called a meeting with the education department this afternoon.
00:59:50Mamata Banerjee's government has a big slap on its face.
00:59:58Mamata Banerjee's government, Mamata Banerjee and her party have sold jobs.
01:00:06Today, because of this verdict of the apex court of India, it has been proved.
01:00:13And even after this, Mamata Banerjee is able to come in front of the media and show her face.
01:00:18We have never seen such a shameless Chief Minister in our history.
01:00:22Satyamev Jayate.
01:00:25That is why I am saying that, first of all, it is unbearable.
01:00:33I don't like it.
01:00:35So many boys and girls, they are shocked the most.
01:00:42But only this government is responsible for this.
01:00:51Only this government is responsible for this.
01:00:55That is why I say to the youth, to the society,
01:01:00that as soon as possible, free yourself from this government.
01:01:20We are talking about education system, after all.
01:01:23Pooja, this has been a big talking point, not since yesterday, but for the last few years.
01:01:29In fact, even the last election.
01:01:31Last year, the Calcutta High Court had scrapped these 26,000 jobs.
01:01:35Mamata Banerjee's government was adamant and therefore they went to the Supreme Court.
01:01:39But they have got this huge, massive blow from the apex court yesterday,
01:01:43which has only upheld the Calcutta High Court's verdict.
01:01:46Now, I was going through the verdict, the order copy yesterday.
01:01:50And the court has categorically stated that because there has been a corruption in the entire process,
01:01:56in the 2016 panel of recruitment of 26,000 primary teachers,
01:02:00there have been around 6,000 odd illegal recruitments in these 26,000 cases.
01:02:08And since the government has not been, or the West Bengal School Service Commission,
01:02:13has not been able to segregate those appointments which are illegal versus those which are legal,
01:02:20therefore the Supreme Court had no other option but to scrap the entire recruitment drive.
01:02:28And therefore, how it's playing out in West Bengal, especially with the opposition parties,
01:02:33is that most people are now blaming the Mamata Banerjee government
01:02:37for destroying the careers of the majority of the teachers who wanted to play it fair
01:02:43in order to rescue or save those who actually cheated to get a government job.
01:02:50What happens to the 25,000 teachers? That's a big number.
01:02:54Well, absolutely. The court has categorically stated that all job stands cancelled right now.
01:03:01And those who got the jobs illegally, they will also have to pay up.
01:03:05They will have to return the salary that they have got.
01:03:08Now the fact is, it is up to the CBI now to find out who are those candidates
01:03:14and identify them who got the jobs illegally and cheated versus those who did not get it illegally.
01:03:22And even their jobs have been lost, but the only relief is, the Supreme Court has said,
01:03:27that they won't have to pay up the salary.
01:03:30But nevertheless, Indrajeet cannot in any way hamper with the teachers' appointment.
01:03:37They are literally the bedrock of this country. They shape up the next generation.
01:03:41That's something that should be taken in all seriousness.
01:03:44Thank you very much. Indrajeet will be tracking not just the political showdown,
01:03:47but how this issue really goes ahead.
01:03:49We're talking about over 25,000 teachers, teaching and non-teaching staff.
01:03:53Alright, let me now take you to the University of Hyderabad.
01:03:57You must have read and known about it in the past few days as we've been tracking
01:04:01how adjacent to the campus, there was this deforestation drive that appeared to happen.
01:04:07The Supreme Court has put a stay on it because there was a massive environment concerns
01:04:11as wildlife was being affected. Here's a report on that.
01:04:18What once stood as a green heaven, now battles for its survival.
01:04:25A Kanchakachibowli forest, a sanctuary of rustling leaves and untamed life is being stripped bare.
01:04:33Amid mounting concerns over large-scale deforestation on 400 acres of land
01:04:39adjacent to the University of Hyderabad campus,
01:04:42the Supreme Court of India has issued a strong directive to halt all trees felling in Kanchakachibowli.
01:04:50This intervention marks a significant setback for the Telangana government.
01:04:55The apex court expressed alarm over reports that authorities took advantage of a long holiday weekend
01:05:02to accelerate tree cutting.
01:05:06But the battle rages beyond the court.
01:05:11The opposition BRS unleashed a fiery attack on the Congress-led state government,
01:05:16calling Chief Minister Revanth Reddy a mere broker of land and warning investors of his ways.
01:05:46Whenever there's a problem at Hyderabad Central University, I'll be there. Where are you?
01:06:17We haven't acquired or we haven't forcefully taken one inch of Hyderabad Central University land.
01:06:26There are lots of issues which they are trying to attribute to our government.
01:06:31Over a long period of legal struggle, the government with its commitment has won the case in Supreme Court
01:06:40in favour of government as its revenue land.
01:06:44Meanwhile, students of Hyderabad University launched a hunger strike in defiance to protect the green cover.
01:06:56As the battle between development and conservation intensifies,
01:07:00the Telangana government has now constituted a committee with group of ministers to resolve the issue.
01:07:08With Abdul Vashir from Hyderabad, Bureau Report, India Today.
01:07:14News coming in from Kerala.
01:07:16Trouble could be mounting for Kerala Chief Minister's daughter, Veena.
01:07:20There's been a prosecution approval that has come in against the daughter, Veena.
01:07:24This is, remember, in the illegal payment case.
01:07:27Trouble could escalate because we are told that the SFIO has got a prosecution sanction
01:07:33that usually is a part of a protocol to begin investigation,
01:07:36if required, the arrest of the daughter.
01:07:40and more that can happen against her in the CMRL case.
01:07:43There had been a fraudulent payment, remember, over two crore rupees
01:07:47and there were different companies also associated with it.
01:07:50I want to immediately bring in my colleague Shibimol KG for the latest on that.
01:07:54Shibimol, good morning.
01:07:55This has been a long pending case.
01:07:57The Chief Minister and the daughter have tried to distance themselves from it.
01:08:01You tell me, what is the status right now?
01:08:03What does this prosecution approval mean?
01:08:05Where is it coming from?
01:08:07Well, Pooja, like you rightly pointed out, this has been a case ongoing for a long time.
01:08:11In fact, the case was taken over by the SFIO, the Serious Fraud Investigation Office,
01:08:17a year ago, almost more than a year ago.
01:08:20You know, and since then, after once the investigation was over,
01:08:24the investigation got over, once the investigation was over,
01:08:26the charge sheet was filed against Veena Vijayram.
01:08:29We are hearing that, you know, the investigation was over.
01:08:32The investigation was over.
01:08:33The charge sheet was filed against Veena Vijayram.
01:08:35We are hearing that they got the, you know, the persecution finally cleared.
01:08:42And to move ahead is what we are understanding.
01:08:47The case is that, you know, Veena Vijayram's IT company called Exterlogic Solutions
01:08:52had entered into an agreement with CMRL, a company in Kochi, to provide IT services.
01:08:58Once the Income Tax Board was conducting raids at CMRL,
01:09:02it was found that her company, despite not providing these services,
01:09:06were found to have paid around Rs. 2.7 crores.
01:09:09And that's exactly what the SFIO, after, you know, a detailed investigation has also found.
01:09:14So, this definitely is troubling for Chief Minister Pradayavijan,
01:09:18as well as his daughter Veena Vijayram, because, you know,
01:09:20this also comes in the background of a vigilance inquiry being asked
01:09:24against Chief Minister Pradayavijan and his daughter,
01:09:26which was, you know, dismissed by the Kerala High Court a few days ago.
01:09:30So, we'll have to see how the CPIN as a whole is going to react to this whole, you know,
01:09:35persecution decision that's been taken by the SFIO.
01:09:39Plus, because it's knocking in many ways directly at the door of the Chief Minister,
01:09:43we'll be tracking more on that. Thank you, Shibi Bol, for the latest on that.
