00:00We've been doing this investigation now for five weeks.
00:09We haven't been sitting here doing nothing, we've been putting in a lot of hours.
00:14This was a very brutal killing.
00:17The victim was pregnant, this was angry, and this was vicious.
00:20Your husband is in jail for murder, and you're drugged into that mess.
00:27You've got such an overkill on somebody, it suggests that it's personal.
00:32Were you 100% involved in this? Were you standing there when she was killed?
00:38We've confronted her with some of the evidence, tried to get her to tell us more of what she knew,
00:43and she just accused us of making that up and lying about that information.
00:48I want to see her dead body, I want to see exactly how grave.
00:52She's been buried, she's been laid to rest.
00:55Well, I want to see a picture.
00:57You have this evidence, what evidence?
00:59Scientific evidence, and when I say that, that means DNA.
01:02You can't mess with DNA, you can't change it, you can't take it away.
01:07We knew it all to be lies.
01:09You did something horrible, and you know it.
01:12You're trying to rattle my bones.
01:14Okay.
01:15She had no problem participating in the planning of this murder. In fact, she enjoyed it.
01:20Love can make people do all sorts of crazy things.
01:24People kill for love.
01:41November 13, 2015, Minot, North Dakota.
01:47It's just after 7 a.m. when a local resident dials 911 in a panic.
01:54I just got home, my back door is kicked in, and my girl ain't answering the phone.
02:00The Minot Police Department received a 911 call from Christopher Jackson.
02:05He was reporting that his fiancée, Angela Wilder, was not responding to his calls.
02:11He had arrived home from work and found that their back door had been kicked open.
02:16He called into the house for his fiancée and his two-year-old son, and he has not received any response.
02:22I'm about to go in.
02:24Okay, why don't you just wait for officers? I'll get them over there.
02:27All right, thank you.
02:33Minot officers arrived within minutes and are met by 32-year-old Christopher Jackson.
02:40He became somewhat disorderly because he wanted to go in and see what was going on,
02:45and they had to physically restrain him from doing that.
02:49First responders went inside to check the residence, to clear the residence.
02:56It's clean, it's orderly, it's tastefully decorated,
02:59and they notice all these pictures on the walls in the living room of Angela and her kids,
03:03and they think this house was cozy, this house had a family.
03:09And so then they walk down the hallway, and one of the officers calls her name multiple times,
03:16and she does not respond whatsoever, and so they know that this situation is dire.
03:24They found the 19-month-old baby boy awake in his crib,
03:30and then across from his bedroom, they found Wilder's and Jackson's bedroom locked.
03:39First responders took the baby out to Mr. Jackson and asked for permission to force entry into that bedroom.
03:46Mr. Jackson did give them permission to do that.
03:49Two other officers kicked down the door.
03:52There was just barely any light, and so it was very dark, so they flipped on the light.
04:00They noticed that there were bloodstains on the sheet, but there was nobody in the bed.
04:06They walked even further into the room, and that's when they discovered Angela's body
04:11laying on the ground in a pool of blood.
04:15There were several visible stab wounds.
04:18They were all up around her neck and her upper chest area.
04:23It was very obvious that Angela Wilder was targeted in this murder.
04:31It was school time, and with the school being right across the street,
04:36I'm ushering the kids across the street to school,
04:39and as I'm walking back, they're putting police tape up.
04:43I looked at the officer, and I pointed at the house, and I said,
04:48what is going on? I have friends in there.
04:51And that's when he just said, there's nothing I can say.
04:57I just, I had no idea what was going on.
05:00I just knew that it wasn't okay.
05:04Angela, she was very sweet.
05:07I just remember being very concerned.
05:13Originally from California, Angela Small had spent the majority of her young life
05:18in Phoenix City, Alabama.
05:21I grew up in the same church as Angela.
05:26She was really sweet, like, timid around people she didn't know,
05:29but very extroverted around people that she was familiar with.
05:34And so I think she thrived around people that she knew and loved.
05:38Angela was very heavily involved in her church.
05:41She attended all of the group activities, all the youth activities.
05:44She completed her seminary work.
05:46She was very devout to the Mormon faith.
05:51After high school, Angela moved 250 miles away from her home town,
05:56to attend the University of South Alabama on a full Army scholarship.
06:02But her path dramatically shifted during her first semester.
06:07She meets somebody, and they begin dating.
06:10But then all of a sudden, Angela finds out that she's pregnant.
06:14She decided she was going to keep the baby.
06:16The Army really wanted scholars to focus on their studies,
06:19and so she did have to drop out.
06:21The relationship with her child's father was short-lived.
06:25So Angela moved back home to Phoenix City and reconnected with her church.
06:35A man named Richie Wilder was attending that church as well,
06:38and he was a growing leader.
06:41She really liked him.
06:42He had a job, he had goals for his future.
06:46Angela and Richie were very close.
06:48He had goals for his future.
06:50Angela and Richie start dating.
06:53Richie was very charismatic, outgoing, very cute and charming,
06:58and he fell head over heels in love with her daughter,
07:01and he was around them all the time.
07:05They got married in January of 2009.
07:10They were really excited to see what their future was going to hold,
07:14and Richie was really excited to be able to adopt Angela's daughter.
07:19Shortly after getting married, Richie joined the Air Force.
07:24Angela was a little reserved about him going into the military,
07:28but they kind of wanted some financial stability,
07:31and so that was Richie's way of providing for Angela and her daughter.
07:38They are assigned to the Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota,
07:42and they find out very quickly afterwards that Angela is pregnant with their second child.
07:47After the birth of their son, however,
07:49Angela and Richie began to disagree about how best to raise their children.
07:57They had kind of isolated themselves up there in the North,
07:59and they're experiencing what married life really feels like,
08:02and it's hard for them.
08:05And pretty soon things kind of became rocky,
08:08and the marriage really probably wasn't meant to be to begin with.
08:14The couple decided to divorce in the spring of 2012 and concentrated on co-parenting.
08:21The custody arrangement was pretty fair.
08:23It was one week on, one week off.
08:29Shortly after their divorce, Angela went back to Alabama to visit some of her friends and family
08:34and a man named Christopher Jackson.
08:36Christopher and Angela were high school sweethearts.
08:39A few weeks after she returns home from that trip,
08:41she discovers that she is pregnant with Christopher's baby.
08:45He ended up coming up to Minot to be with her, and eventually they were engaged.
08:51Angela and Chris, they weren't lovey-dovey, like hanging all over each other, that sort of thing,
08:56but you could see an admiration that they had for one another.
09:01Angela liked school.
09:03She had drive.
09:04She talked about how much she liked to help people,
09:06so being a nurse made sense for a field for her.
09:11Angela enrolls in nursing school.
09:13Christopher gets a job at Walmart working overnights,
09:16and the two are really trying to make a life together.
09:1928-year-old Angela gave birth to her third child in 2013,
09:24and in October 2015, she learned she was pregnant with her fourth.
09:29She was happy.
09:31She seemed happy.
09:36But just two months into her pregnancy,
09:38authorities have been called to Angela and Christopher's home,
09:43where Angela has been found stabbed to death
09:45with their 19-month-old son in the next room.
09:50I met with patrol officers.
09:51They kind of updated me what they had found
09:54and what they were looking for.
09:55One of the things that the police officers discussed
09:58was they could not figure out why Christopher
10:00did not go into the house.
10:03Christopher instead had dialed 911.
10:06It served as a giant red flag to the other officers
10:08because if their wife or their children were in peril of any kind,
10:13they would have immediately gone into the house,
10:15no questions asked.
10:17So we were keeping an eye on him
10:19and trying to work out what was going on.
10:22So we were keeping an eye on him
10:24and trying to work with him to get him to come down
10:26to the police department.
10:29I saw Chris, just for a split second,
10:32being put into a squad car.
10:36It was so sad to see the people that you care about
10:40in that sort of situation, and there's nothing you can do.
10:44A NEW ROMANCE
10:50Coming up...
10:51Detectives learn about an enemy in Angela's life.
11:03And a new romance will be tested
11:05when it becomes the focus of the investigation.
11:10Let me tell you something.
11:12Well, then you're wrong.
11:15I don't think that apart they would have carried out this vicious murder,
11:19but I think that they fed off of each other quite well.
11:32On the morning of November 13, 2015,
11:35Minot police begin processing the home of 30-year-old Angela Wilder
11:40after she was discovered stabbed to death inside her bedroom.
11:48Typical for us on our crime scene unit is
11:51we wait until the investigators determine what's going to be needed
11:55as far as processing of the crime scene.
11:59When we arrive on scene, we'll do a walk-through.
12:02So Angela's body was in full rigor mortis.
12:06It was cold.
12:07She definitely had been deceased for several hours.
12:12She had an extensive amount of stab wounds,
12:16all concentrated around her neck and her upper torso, her shoulders.
12:23You could tell that she was either pulled from the bed
12:26or slid out of the bed from the blood around Miss Wilder.
12:30You could tell just from the scene that there was a little bit of a struggle.
12:34Angela, she had defensive wounds.
12:36She had some broken fingernails and some wounds to her hands.
12:40So we asked that her fingernails be clipped for possible DNA evidence.
12:48She was wearing just underwear and a shirt.
12:53We could see on her underwear the outline of
12:58what looked like a knife blade in blood.
13:02It looked like whoever had done this had possibly wiped or
13:07laid the weapon down on her.
13:10We had the perfect knife print on her underwear,
13:13but there was no murder weapon found at the scene.
13:18Detectives move on from the bedroom
13:22and determine that forced entry was made through the rear door of the home.
13:28It looked like some damage to the back door,
13:30but there was nothing really obvious that made it appear as if
13:34someone had broken in to steal anything or ransack the home.
13:41Authorities finish processing the scene
13:43and transport the victim's body to the medical examiner's office.
13:51During the autopsy of Angela Wilder,
13:53we learned that she was stabbed nearly 40 times.
13:56When you've got such an overkill on somebody,
14:00it suggests that it's personal.
14:05We knew that we're going to have to start interviewing people
14:07within the victim's circle.
14:09I called the social services and I told them we had a 19-month-old
14:13that kind of needed to be cared for while we dealt with his father.
14:18We were questioning the fact that Chris Jackson did not go into the home.
14:23Everybody said, oh, if that was me, I would rush right in to see what happens.
14:28At the station, detectives sit down with Angela's fiancé, Christopher Jackson,
14:33and ask him to walk them through the events of the previous evening.
14:40Christopher Jackson's story was that he was dropped off at work
14:43at 10 p.m. on Thursday, the 12th of November,
14:49and that he worked the overnight shift at Walmart.
14:53At midnight, his first break, he called Angela.
14:58And they talked for a little bit.
15:00His second break, around 2 a.m., he calls her again.
15:03And everything's fine.
15:06But then there became a point where she quit answering his calls.
15:22Work and everything.
15:247 o'clock or 6.50 gets here, and I go to clock out,
15:28and I go walking out to the lot, because usually she's out more.
15:31And she's not out there at this moment.
15:35So I called her to see where she was at.
15:39And I keep calling her.
15:46And she's not picking up the phone.
15:53So I call a taxi, because I figure she's just tired.
16:00When Christopher Jackson arrived back home, the rear door was kicked open.
16:05Immediately I thought something was wrong.
16:07Her car is still here.
16:09She didn't leave.
16:10She would have answered the phone.
16:12Did you go into the house?
16:14Something in my stomach said that.
16:17So you never went in the house?
16:18No, ma'am.
16:20Even though your child's in there and your wife is in there?
16:26I felt like he was scared to go in.
16:28Until somebody's in that situation and worried about what they're going to find,
16:33I don't think people really know how they're going to react.
16:38Everything that Mr. Jackson was telling the detectives seemed to be legitimate.
16:43He seemed to be being honest.
16:45But we couldn't just take his word for it.
16:47We would have to cooperate with Walmart and just make sure that he's not in any way involved in this murder.
16:55Detectives ask if they can take samples of his DNA for comparison.
17:00He quickly complies.
17:02Then the detectives give him a little break for a little bit.
17:05And in that break, the camera is still rolling in the interview room.
17:09And it catches Christopher calling Angela's sister.
17:11Then we find Richie's ***hole.
17:15At this point, we needed more information on what he knew about Richie's involvement in this murder.
17:30In Minot, North Dakota, the fiancée of murder victim Angela Wilder
17:35has just called out Angela's ex-husband as a person of interest.
17:40And detectives need to know why.
17:45They return to the interrogation room and press Christopher Jackson for more details.
17:51What's the relationship like with Richie?
18:03According to Christopher, Angela confided in him that her marriage to Richie ended under volatile circumstances.
18:11Christopher claims the conflict continued even after their divorce.
18:17There was constant fighting over the custody of the kids
18:20to the point where Angela and Richie couldn't even do the weekly exchange.
18:41I always went, so I walked the kids in so she never had to see them or anything.
18:47Detectives knew that they would have to verify Christopher's alibi.
18:51And now it was time to talk to Richie Wilder.
18:54Detectives end their interview with Christopher.
18:57And a few hours later, bring Richie in for questioning.
19:03Hello. Hi, are you Richie?
19:04Yes, ma'am.
19:05Hi, Richie. My name is Detective Krista Matthys.
19:07This is Sergeant Detective Dave Goodwin.
19:12We're doing an investigation here and obviously this is serious.
19:17And I'll tell you, Angela's dead.
19:21He made the comment very nonchalantly, oh really.
19:26And didn't seem to be too concerned about that at all.
19:30I'll tell you what, there's a lot of fingers pointing right at you.
19:33Oh, yeah.
19:35Because I'm her ex-husband, right?
19:37Well, you're her ex-husband and you guys have a volatile relationship.
19:42Your history.
19:43Yeah, we don't have a good history.
19:48Richie denies abusing Angela and instead makes his own shocking accusation.
19:55Richie claims that Angela started abusing their older daughter.
19:59She abused her twice. I reported her both times.
20:03At the same time, I ended up filing for divorce.
20:08Richie claims he would never hurt his ex-wife, but detectives are skeptical.
20:15How can you prove to me that I'm looking at the wrong person?
20:20Well, I don't know when this happened, but I know yesterday I was with my kids.
20:28Cindy came home and we had dinner and I went to work and I came home and I slept.
20:36Richie explains that Cynthia Wilder, or Cindy to her friends and family, is his current wife.
20:46They had met in 2012 while working part-time at the Minot Vocational Center.
20:52Richie is quirky and funny and Cynthia right away is just really taken by this guy and really enjoys his personality.
21:01She actually went through the employee directory and found Richie's number and texted him and asked him if he was available for a date that night.
21:08Within a few months, they're living together.
21:11Richie seemed nice and cordial and she was happy and doing good and it seemed like life was really good for her.
21:17And by April, Cynthia was pregnant.
21:22The couple married in August 2013.
21:26After Cindy has their daughter, she graduates from Minot State University with a degree in teaching.
21:33It wasn't long before she was offered a position to have her own kindergarten room.
21:38She loved teaching and loved having all the kids and all the different things she was doing.
21:44So, yeah, it seemed like life was really good for her and I was happy about that.
21:54Richie Wilder said that his wife was in bed, Cindy Wilder was in bed, and that she could verify that he was at home all night.
22:02I had noticed while we were sitting there talking with Richie that he had a scratch on his cheek.
22:07And it was clear at the autopsy that Angela Wilder had fought back.
22:13What happened to your face?
22:15Where?
22:16Did you get a scratch on your face?
22:17Yeah.
22:18We play wrestle slash play fight.
22:22Richie complies with detectives' request to photograph the scratch and collect his DNA.
22:29We ended up getting search warrants for Richie's car as well as Cindy Wilder's haunted house.
22:34And after that, he was free to leave for the time being.
22:38Following his release, detectives head to the elementary school where Cindy Wilder works to corroborate Richie's alibi.
22:51We're investigating something that has to do with Richie's ex-wife, Angela.
22:57She's dead and we need to get to the bottom of it.
23:00She's dead and we need to get to the bottom of it.
23:04Telling her the information about Angela, she also didn't seem to be overly concerned about that news.
23:11The detectives ask Cynthia to confirm Richie's alibi, and Cynthia repeats it almost verbatim.
23:17He got home like 11.30, 11.45.
23:21Were you awake when he got home?
23:24I was in bed, but I was still awake, yes.
23:27She said she woke up several times throughout the night to check on their children.
23:32Where was he at when you got up?
23:34He was in bed all three times you woke up.
23:36Okay.
23:38Detectives wrap up Cindy's interview and proceed with the warrant to search her car.
23:45On the passenger door as I was photographing, I noticed what looked like just a small stain on the inside of the door panel.
23:55We took a swab of that sample.
23:59Detectives then execute the search warrant on the couple's apartment and Richie's car.
24:05We did that search and did not locate anything of any evidentiary value.
24:11That would help us in this murder investigation.
24:15With their suspicions growing against Richie and Cindy,
24:19detectives speak to Angela's friends and family about her relationship with her ex-husband.
24:27Richie did make accusations that Angela had been abusing their kids.
24:33I personally do not think that was even possible.
24:36I personally do not think that was even possible.
24:39I never saw that side of her.
24:43Angela Wilder's mother and her sister said that he was lying
24:48and that there's no way that it had gone down the way that he had said.
24:52They both indicated that Richie Wilder had a very volatile relationship with Angela.
24:59They said that Richie had choked her while they were in base housing.
25:02So he was eventually court-martialed for that
25:06and was given a dishonorable discharge from the military.
25:10It was brought up several times by family that Richie's the one that's responsible.
25:16Richie's the one that we need to be looking at.
25:20The main working theory was he planned to just remove her from the picture
25:26because then he wouldn't have to worry about any issues with custody.
25:31He's got the strongest motive that we have heard so far, but we just don't have the proof.
25:38Detectives received the DNA results from the crime lab nearly a month later.
25:44The blood swab that was collected from the front door of Cindy's Honda Pilot
25:49came back to be Angela Wilder's blood.
25:52So we knew at that point Cindy had some involvement.
25:56The analysis of the fingernail clippings showed that there was DNA under Angela's fingernails.
26:04DNA that could be matched to Richie Wilder.
26:17Nearly one month into the murder investigation of Angela Wilder,
26:22detectives have uncovered evidence that her ex-husband Richie Wilder is likely responsible.
26:29The DNA that was found underneath Angela's fingernails was in fact Richie's DNA.
26:35That seemed to match the scratch that Richie had on his face.
26:39Richie's current wife Cindy is also under suspicion after Angela's blood was found in her vehicle.
26:46Angela's blood was found in her vehicle, but detectives need more proof in order to arrest her.
26:53We felt like we had enough to start on the arrest warrant for Richie Wilder.
26:59On December 18th, detectives received their warrant and locate Richie at a local gym.
27:07We were dressed with police vests and had some members of the SWAT team with us.
27:13Richie immediately requests a lawyer.
27:16He has no interest in talking whatsoever, so they go ahead and book him and put him into the Ward County Jail.
27:24That afternoon, detectives bring Cindy in for further questioning.
27:31The detectives tell her that her husband has been arrested for murder.
27:35And she says there's no way and she proceeds to be just defiant.
27:39He was trying to rattle my bones.
27:41Okay, Cindy, we wouldn't do this if we didn't have proof.
27:44Whose blood do you think was in the Honda?
27:46I don't know.
27:47I'll tell you, Angela's blood.
27:50Where was it?
27:52It was in the Honda.
27:54He didn't leave the house that night.
27:55Yes, he did Cindy.
27:56He didn't leave the house that night.
27:59No, he didn't. I was up several times with the kids and he was out cold.
28:04That's not true.
28:06Cindy Wilder stuck to her story.
28:08She just would not talk to us about anything incriminating involving Richie Wilder or herself.
28:16We still were very suspicious of Cindy Wilder, but we also knew that there's probably no way that we would ever prove this.
28:24We had no reason to hold her and she was released and allowed to go about her day.
28:29As news of Richie's arrest spreads, friends and family are shocked.
28:36We see his mugshot pop up on our Facebook feed and rumor mills start going around like crazy.
28:45Everyone is thinking, how is he being tied to this murder?
28:53Like, what are the circumstances?
28:55As soon as I found out, I had called Cindy and asked her, you know, what's going on?
29:01And she obviously was very distraught and upset and said, I don't know, but they're wrong and he has nothing to do with this.
29:11Cindy said he was a great guy, but just kind of watching them interact, I felt like maybe he was controlling and she was kind of going along with it.
29:20I didn't know how involved she was or wasn't, but I always felt that she knew more than she was willing to at least tell me.
29:31In March 2016, four months after the murder, detectives get a call from Richie's lawyer.
29:39He said that Richie wanted to tell us exactly what happened.
29:44Detective Matias and I went to the Ward County Sheriff's Department and asked that they have Richie Wilder brought up from the jail.
29:51His attorney was there.
29:54Richie begins his statement by implicating Angela Wilder's fiancé.
30:01He proceeds to tell the detectives this crazy outlandish story of how Christopher had somehow recruited him into a police force.
30:10Christopher had somehow recruited him into a plot to get rid of Angela.
30:16Chris said he kind of came up with an idea to, like, where I could get full custody of my kids and he could get full custody of his kids.
30:25He said he thought that she was cheating on him, you know.
30:29So according to Richie, the night of November 13th at 2 a.m., a phone call comes in from Christopher Jackson.
30:36I'm like, I'm pretty sure that guy's there. He's like, why don't you come down and get me and then, you know, we'll head up and catch him in the act.
30:42So I was like, alright. So I just threw some clothes on real quick, you know, got in the car, drove to Walmart.
30:49We drove back to his house. We went in and we, you know, I just followed him.
30:56Went up some stairs and went through, like, a living room with a light on or whatever.
31:01And then he opened the bedroom door.
31:06It looked like there was two people in the bed.
31:10And of course, when he pulled back the curtain, first thing I noticed, there wasn't a person in the bed.
31:13That was a body pillow. But he grabbed her and he just started stabbing her.
31:17And, sorry, he just kept stabbing her.
31:22And I was like, what the f*** is he doing, man?
31:27And I ran over there.
31:30He's in tears as he's explaining this.
31:32He said he went over there and checked for a pulse.
31:37There was just blood everywhere.
31:39And, like, as I would touch her pulse or whatever, she, like, leaned up and, like, scratched the mess out of my face and grabbed her hands.
31:47She was just like, I love you.
31:49Detective Matias and I were just letting Mr. Wilder talk and tell this story.
31:55He just kept digging his hole deeper and deeper.
32:02THE DETECTIVES
32:09Three months after being arrested for the murder of his ex-wife, Angela Wilder,
32:15Richie calls a meeting with detectives and points the finger at Angela's fiancé, Christopher Jackson.
32:23The detectives had just received a fresh batch of video surveillance footage from Walmart the night before they were scheduled to meet with Richie.
32:30And they had gone through every single minute, every single second of that video.
32:35We were very comfortable and 100% sure that Mr. Jackson did not leave the Walmart.
32:42WHEN DETECTIVES CONFRONT RICHIE, HE CONTINUES TO STICK TO HIS NEW STORY.
32:48What you're telling us does not fit.
32:53Because I know that Chris did not leave Walmart.
32:58During the hours that you say that he did.
33:01He did though.
33:03I know he didn't because I watched it on video. I watched the minutes click by.
33:08I just watched that.
33:11But you're giving us details that indicate that you were there and I think you killed him.
33:17I didn't kill anybody.
33:19I think you killed Angela.
33:21I didn't.
33:25Who did then?
33:27Who did then? Because you were there.
33:29And I told you Chris did.
33:31You can't make it fit.
33:33It doesn't.
33:35He looked at his attorney. His attorney said, you can stop talking at any time.
33:40And he said, I want to stop now.
33:43So then at that point he knew that that story wasn't going to get him out of this murder.
33:49Nine months later in December of 2016, Richie Wilder's murder trial gets underway.
33:57Richie was in the front with his lawyer and he looked professional.
34:03But he seemed to always have a smug look on his face.
34:07The prosecution presents strong physical evidence citing DNA evidence that ties Richie to the crime.
34:14Angela's blood had been found in Cindy's car and Richie's DNA had been found underneath her fingernails.
34:20One of the things that the prosecution did have to kind of overcome is that the murder weapon had never been found.
34:26After a four-day trial, the jury reaches a verdict.
34:31We felt that we were making the correct decision, deeming him guilty.
34:36When I found out Richie was convicted, life without parole, I thought that was pretty awesome, actually.
34:43I heard Cynthia crying in the back.
34:47She was so committed to her husband and how he was a good man and he wouldn't do this.
34:54Just almost like she had such a hatred as well for Angela.
34:57I always had a thought that she was involved somehow.
35:01Cindy loved to get on camera and tell her sob story.
35:06There were several times she'd be crying and still expressing her support for her husband and claiming that he didn't do it.
35:16None of it makes any sense to me.
35:19I don't know what to do.
35:22Three months later, detectives receive information that sheds light on the role Cindy played in Angela's murder.
35:30In March of 2017, Matt Walters, a friend of Cindy Wilder's, told us about a woman who was involved in Angela's murder.
35:40He said that she was involved in Angela's murder.
35:44In March of 2017, Matt Walters, a friend of Cindy Wilder's, told us about a Facebook conversation that he was having with Cindy Wilder.
35:56And she was making some admissions during that conversation that sounded like she was involved in the murder.
36:03When did you first start talking to Cynthia through the Facebook messages?
36:08She messaged me at the end of March of this year.
36:12She started off saying a really leading comment about how the knife wasn't supposed to be the main plan.
36:18It was supposed to be a gun, but the knife was a backup.
36:24Detectives ask Matt if he'd be willing to talk to Cindy again, this time while wearing a wire.
36:32He was willing to let us wire his vehicle so he could drive around with Cindy and see if he could get her to make some admissions on her involvement in the murder of Angela Wilder.
36:44He made contact with Cindy Wilder, and they go out to a local bar, spent several hours there, and ended up driving home and sat in the driveway.
36:54She began to talk about how they had planned this, how they worked together planning the murder.
36:59Are you mad at your husband?
37:01No, I'm proud of him. I'm just pissed that he got caught and that he got sloppy and impatient and had this thing planned for two f***ing years.
37:13Three months after Richie Wilder was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-wife Angela,
37:20Minot, North Dakota detectives are building their case against his current wife, Cindy, after she implicates herself in the murder plot.
37:29Matt Wilder's vehicle was wired, and Matt slowly got her to start talking about her involvement in the case.
37:37She was telling him that they were fighting over the kids all the time.
37:41We had split custody, and I know like their mom just talked s*** about me and Richie Wilder.
37:46And I was like, what the f*** are you talking about?
37:49And I was like, I don't know what you're talking about.
37:52Cindy says that in September 2013, they had a custody hearing, and afterwards she had said to Richie,
37:58wouldn't it just be easier if Angela was no longer in our lives?
38:02It's kind of fun just talking about it, just like that rush.
38:06And then next thing I know, it's like, I don't know what to do.
38:11I don't know what to do.
38:13I don't know what to do.
38:15I don't know what to do.
38:16It's just like that rush.
38:18And then next thing I know, it's like, f*** it's going to go down tonight.
38:24Detectives listen as Cindy tells Matt that on November 13th, she and Richie put their plan into action.
38:33Like, she put up a good fight.
38:37She did.
38:39She scratched his face.
38:40And that's what got him too, was like, if it was me, I f***ing would have gone back and cut her f***ing fingers off.
38:47I would have burned them. I would have lit the house on fire.
38:51Do you think you're a horrible person or do you think it needed to be done?
38:55I fully believe that it needed to be done.
38:58Like, I helped him. We f***ing had this planned out.
39:01And he f***ed it up.
39:03Because he didn't clean the car good enough.
39:05One f***ing spot of blood in my car.
39:11Cindy's taped confession is more than enough for prosecutors to charge her as a co-conspirator.
39:18On May 19th, Detective Mattis and I went to Washington Elementary School where Cindy Wilder was now currently working as a kindergarten teacher.
39:28She did not say anything. Much like Richie, once she was arrested, there was nothing more that she was going to say.
39:41In November of 2017, Cindy enters an Alford plea of conspiracy to commit murder.
39:49She accepts the fact that the evidence that the state has against her is overwhelming and enough to convict her on this charge.
39:57So she pleads guilty without actually admitting any wrongdoing.
40:03In May 2018, Cindy appears in the courtroom for sentencing.
40:09Cindy has an opportunity to plead with the court basically and tell her side of the story before the judge issues her ruling on punishment.
40:17This is kind of an open plea so that it's up to the judge what she wants to pose for a sentence.
40:24There was recordings replayed of Cindy saying that Angela's fingers should have been cut off and the house burned down.
40:31And so Cindy kind of downplays a little bit the information that she had shared with Matt by saying that she was trying to brag.
40:38It didn't really go over very well given the fact that not many people brag about a brutal murder.
40:45The judge hit her with the strongest sentence she could give her, which was life without parole.
40:54When I found out that Cindy was going to go to prison for life without parole, I understood it.
41:02But it's just super hard because I've lost a daughter.
41:08But do I think she deserved to be punished? Absolutely.
41:15I don't think that apart, Richie or Cindy would have carried out this vicious murder.
41:22But I think that they fed off of each other quite well.
41:26Love can make people do crazy things.
41:30Things that you don't think about consequences in the long run.
41:38Well, isn't it said love makes people do crazy things?
41:44Yeah.
41:47But I don't, I don't see love in this.
41:53I don't see love at all.
41:56I see, I see the love between Angela and Chris.
42:03That was love. Love does not murder.
42:06I personally believe justice was served.
42:10And I would want Angela to be remembered as someone that had integrity.
42:16As someone that was kind and loving.
42:20As a good mother.
42:22And as someone to be looked up to.
