00:00:17Good evening, Patpitik na Santaroon!
00:00:22Hmm, I think you're on the wrong channel.
00:00:26Oh, we're still speaking Tagalog.
00:00:29Tagalog. We're speaking Tagalog today.
00:00:32But he understands Bisaya because he's been here in Cebu for 4 years.
00:00:37But...
00:00:39We need to understand each other.
00:00:43Our guest today is a freelance photojournalist
00:00:50and he's been in the industry for over 20 years
00:00:56from international news.
00:00:59He's also from another country.
00:01:02He's done photojournalism, local news,
00:01:06broadsheet, newspaper, and NGOs.
00:01:11His name is...
00:01:14Well, I'm also a part of the Manila Broadsheet.
00:01:20I've always... I was young back then.
00:01:24Anyway, he's the one who taught me back then.
00:01:28He taught me.
00:01:30I joined his service while he was doing cover.
00:01:34He taught me a lot.
00:01:36Let's all welcome Jack Hernandez!
00:01:43Hi!
00:01:44Bring the mic closer.
00:01:45Good evening to all of you.
00:01:48Thank you, Carlo, for inviting me.
00:01:50And thank you to Sunstar for creating this platform for us photographers
00:01:56to share our stories and experiences.
00:01:59So, it's...
00:02:02Is it the first in Cebu, Carlo?
00:02:04It's like...
00:02:06They said it's the first.
00:02:08Thank you so much for Sunstar.
00:02:10And Carlo deserves it.
00:02:13Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:02:15So, Boss Jack, let's talk about how you started in photography.
00:02:24Oh, okay.
00:02:25Wait.
00:02:27Where did you start?
00:02:29And why did you go to the field of photojournalism?
00:02:33Ah, okay.
00:02:34So, I started photojournalism way back in college.
00:02:39I took fine arts in University of the Philippines in Diliman.
00:02:43And in fine arts, we have a course of photography.
00:02:47And then I entered the Philippine Collegian.
00:02:50Ito yung college newspaper sa UP.
00:02:54And from there, doon na nag-start.
00:02:57Tuloy-tuloy na siya.
00:02:59And after college, I pursued professional photojournalism na.
00:03:06First work ko is in Northern Mariana Islands, sa Saipan.
00:03:10And then I moved to Guam.
00:03:13Almost 10 years din sa abroad.
00:03:16And then I finally decided to come back to the Philippines.
00:03:19And then I joined Manila Bulletin.
00:03:22And yun.
00:03:24And the rest is history.
00:03:26Bali dun sa, saan yun?
00:03:28Saipan at Guam?
00:03:29Yes.
00:03:30Photojournalist din.
00:03:31Ano yung mga kino-cover mo din?
00:03:34Oh, same, same.
00:03:35Lahat.
00:03:36Politics, sports.
00:03:39Lahat.
00:03:40Typical news na kino-cover natin.
00:03:42Same.
00:03:43Ang difference lang is, masyadong maganda sa Saipan and Guam.
00:03:47Para siyang retirement place.
00:03:50So bilang photojournalist, I want to, you know, mapaganda pa yung portfolio ko.
00:03:57So I decided to go back to the Philippines.
00:04:00So bihira yung news doon?
00:04:04Araw-araw naman.
00:04:05Same.
00:04:06Yeah, yeah.
00:04:07Araw-araw may news, ganyan.
00:04:08Pero iba pa rin sa Pilipinas.
00:04:10Ah, okay.
00:04:11So I want to contribute din sa history ng Philippines.
00:04:13Nabivisualize ko na konti.
00:04:15Ano yun?
00:04:16Masyadong maganda.
00:04:18Tapos yung pagbalik mo dito, direto ka na sa, yun nga, Manila Bulletin.
00:04:25Yes, Manila Bulletin.
00:04:26So.
00:04:27Paano ka na pasok sa Manila Bulletin?
00:04:29I applied.
00:04:30I applied.
00:04:31And then si, yung friend ko, si Rafi, he helped me, he introduced me to Sir Albert.
00:04:37Rafi.
00:04:38Lerma.
00:04:39Lerma.
00:04:40And he introduced me to Sir Albert.
00:04:42And yeah, he interviewed me, yun.
00:04:44Doon na nag-start.
00:04:45And it's one of the most rewarding jobs that I got.
00:04:49Like, you know, parang dahil kay Sir Albert, marami ako natutunan lahat ng ethics and yung work.
00:04:57Kung paano mag-work ang journalist dito sa Philippines.
00:05:00So, I'm so thankful.
00:05:01Hi, Sir.
00:05:02Hi, Sir.
00:05:03Sir Albert.
00:05:04Idol.
00:05:05Mga anak.
00:05:06Yeah.
00:05:08Tapos, ayun, yun nga, sa Manila Bulletin, mostly covering your, Manila Beat ka, di ba?
00:05:15Yes, Manila Beat.
00:05:16Manila Beat.
00:05:17So, ano yung mga, like, kino-cover mo na, halo-halo na to, di ba?
00:05:25Yes.
00:05:26General Beat ka ba na?
00:05:27General Beat.
00:05:28General.
00:05:29Ayun.
00:05:30Katulad ng menention ko before, sa sports, politics.
00:05:33And kadalasan, si Carlo, I've known him since, like, for 10 years na siguro.
00:05:38We started sa Manila Bulletin.
00:05:40MPD.
00:05:41And hi sa mga MPD tropa namin dyan.
00:05:43And then, yeah, we cover a lot.
00:05:45Like, sunog, ano pa?
00:05:48Lahat.
00:05:49Crime.
00:05:50Gabi-gabi.
00:05:51Ayun, nag-night duty din ako.
00:05:53Dati tabloid pa ako noon, e.
00:05:54Yeah.
00:06:16Yeah, so thankful ako nun.
00:06:18May service kami.
00:06:20Makikisabay, kahit pawal.
00:06:24Ayun nga, at least habang nakikisabay, nakikinig ako kay Boss Jack sa mga turo ng photo.
00:06:32So yeah.
00:06:33Coverage, saan pupunta, saan importante.
00:06:36So yeah, sobrang stressful minsan yung work.
00:06:41Kasi minsan malalagay ka sa night shift.
00:06:44Ayun.
00:06:4510pm to 6am.
00:06:47Tapos yung coverage mo is masyadong lahat grim.
00:06:52Male-dominated ang photojourn.
00:06:55Yes, definitely.
00:06:56Madami, madami yung lalaki.
00:06:58May mga challenges ka ba na nangyari sa'yo, sa field?
00:07:03Yes.
00:07:05As a women, as a female photojourn, nahirapan ka ba?
00:07:10Yes, simula pa lang, alam naman natin na male-dominated talaga yung industry.
00:07:15But you know, when you push the barrier, nandiyan na tayo.
00:07:20For me, kahit mahirap, kailangan kong i-prove na kaya ko to.
00:07:58So for me, physical, yeah, maraming na ring incident before na hinila yung buhok ko while covering, pinush ka.
00:08:06Mga kapwa lang din natin yan.
00:08:08Yes.
00:08:09Sad, di ba?
00:08:10Pero yan nga, syempre. Normal yan sa... yan nga, pero babae ka kasi, syempre.
00:08:17Meron kasi mga macho, tendency minsan. Pero it's... ewan ko.
00:08:25Pero now, I'm so happy na nagbabago na yung ano.
00:08:44Di ba? Parang sobrang... pero no, you need to prove that he's wrong, di ba?
00:09:04Marami kang matutunan dyan. Hindi yung ano.
00:09:09Ewan. So now, yung industries, nagbabago na.
00:09:15And I'm so happy dito sa Cebu, I can see a lot of women photographers.
00:09:22Oo, sa Campus Jorn, may nakikita ko.
00:09:24Yes, Campus Jorn, every time we cover, so I can see women taking photos, mga students, di ba?
00:09:31Kikita ko yan.
00:09:33Four years ka na dito, di ba?
00:09:36Yes, almost four years na.
00:09:38Balik tayo dun sa Manila Bulletin. From Manila Bulletin, saan ka pumunta nun?
00:09:45Actually, sa peak ng career ko, something happened.
00:09:51I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2014, end of 2014.
00:09:59Nasa peak ka ng career mo, and then suddenly, ma-diagnose ka ng ganoon kasing, alam mo yun,
00:10:06it's life changing, hindi ko akalain.
00:10:10Bata ko pa nun, bakit ako? Yung maraming tanong na ganoon.
00:10:14So everything changed. Parang sobrang hirap.
00:10:17So I stopped. Medically retired ako actually for sa Manila Bulletin.
00:10:23Kasing nga nagkaroon ako ng cancer, I need to undergo two years of chemo.
00:10:28And after that, so yeah, after Manila Bulletin, nag-rest ako, two years, chemo, ganoon.
00:10:34Nung na-diagnose yun, na-feel mo yun sa field na hirap, ano, sa mga pakiramdam mo?
00:10:44Masyado kasi tayong active dati, alam mo yun.
00:10:46Sobrang workaholic ako, tapos yung stress.
00:10:49Hanggang ngayon naman eh.
00:10:51Kasi yung stress talaga, number one daw sabi nung doktor ko, yung stress.
00:10:54Tsaka yung food na kinakain natin, only two, diba?
00:10:58Sobrang pagod ko sa work, yung pagkain natin dati.
00:11:01Sa kanto-kanto lang tayo kumakain, remember?
00:11:04Yung mga ganoon, so dapat ingatan natin yun.
00:11:07And then, so yeah, after nun, nag-break muna ako.
00:11:11And then after chemo, nag-start na ako mag-freelance and NGOs.
00:11:17Okay.
00:11:18Another challenge siyempre yung ma-stereotype ka.
00:11:21Women ka nga, babae ka nga, tapos nagkaroon ka pa ng cancer.
00:11:25Ano eh, paano mag-prove yung sarili mo na kaya mo?
00:11:29Diba? Paano yun?
00:11:31Sa pinagdaanan mo, andito pa din.
00:11:34Yun nga.
00:11:35Laban lang, diba?
00:11:36Thankful din ako sa mga friends ko na talagang nag-stick sila sa lowest point ng buhay ko.
00:11:42Kailangan talaga.
00:11:43Yan, nandyan sila mga friends.
00:11:46Yun.
00:11:47How did you bounce back?
00:11:50Sobrang hirap, Carlo. I tried applying before.
00:12:11Ganyan, so I stopped.
00:12:13Alam mo yun?
00:12:14Nag-focus na lang ako sa docu.
00:12:16Nag-focus ako sa NGOs.
00:12:19So, very thankful naman ako na nagkaroon ako ng mga clients na international NGOs.
00:12:24So, I focus mostly on environmental projects.
00:12:28Mga ganyan.
00:12:29Kaya mo na pa.
00:12:32Siyempre, importante yung dahil sa pag-portfolio mo.
00:12:39Diba?
00:12:41I mean, yung pagtago mo ng photos, yan.
00:12:44Yun yung ginamit mo sa pag-apply na.
00:12:46Oo, same.
00:12:47Mga works from Guam, Saipan and Manila.
00:12:52Tawag ng clippings.
00:12:53Yes, clippings.
00:12:54Kaya kayo pag nag-shoot, dapat compile nyo lahat ng mga published photos nyo.
00:13:00So, when you apply for NGOs, yun yung papakita.
00:13:04And make your own website.
00:13:06Ganyan, yun ang number one.
00:13:09Atsaka, yun nga eh.
00:13:11Hindi ko talaga tumigil hanggat...
00:13:13Siyempre, yun talaga yung alam natin yung trabaho.
00:13:16Ikaw, madami kang alam.
00:13:20Ayun ha.
00:13:21NGO.
00:13:22Ano yung mga, for example, na work mo sa NGO na pinasok mo?
00:13:28Documenting?
00:13:29Yes, documenting mga projects nila.
00:13:31One time, I went to Davao.
00:13:33Ako lang mag-isa to document yung projects nila for the whole Davao region.
00:13:38So bilang babae, another challenge na naman yun.
00:13:40Kasi yung safety, lahat, ganyan.
00:13:43Pero we need to be brave talaga.
00:13:45Alam mo yun, yung number one.
00:13:47And maging fearless.
00:13:49Pero huwag mong makalimutan yung safety mo pa rin.
00:13:51So yeah, natapos ko lahat ng projects.
00:13:54Kaya naman.
00:13:55Pero okay ka na ngayon diba? Wala na?
00:13:57Yeah, thankfully. Sana, ganun.
00:13:59Hindi, wala na talaga.
00:14:01Sana.
00:14:02Think positive.
00:14:26Matitira at matitira.
00:14:27Yung matitira talaga.
00:14:30Kung ngayon, kung mga 20s tayo,
00:14:32ang friends natin na sa 100,
00:14:34pagbabaya lang, pagbabaya.
00:14:36Hanggang ano.
00:14:37Diba?
00:14:38Ayun.
00:14:41Pag NGO mo,
00:14:45ano yung mga napunta mo na ngayon?
00:14:48I mean, saan ka na ngayon nag-cover?
00:14:51So now, focus mostly sa Cebu.
00:14:56I am a correspondent for Rappler.
00:14:58And yeah, on the sides,
00:15:00insan yung mga NGOs din.
00:15:05Ngayon, dito sa Cebu,
00:15:07ano naman yung mga encounters mo?
00:15:11Can you differentiate Manila and Cebu coverages?
00:15:16Ikaw, tagal mo dun e.
00:15:17Ako, putol-putol ako dun.
00:15:20Ikaw, talagang halos,
00:15:22doon ka na nahasa.
00:15:23Oo, Manila talaga.
00:15:25So, sanay na sanay ako sa coverage sa Manila.
00:15:27MPD, QCPD,
00:15:29magkakasama kami ng mga tropa, ganyan.
00:15:32And pagdating dito sa Cebu,
00:15:34medyo chill.
00:15:35Ang friend ko si Carlo and si Aldo.
00:15:39Hi Aldo!
00:15:41Tapos ano,
00:15:43mas chill, mas...
00:15:44Tsaka mabait yung mga tagag Cebu.
00:15:47And sobrang thankful naman ako na in-accept nila,
00:15:50kahit Tagalog, ganyan.
00:15:52So, and...
00:15:54Sobrang na-realize ko,
00:15:55ang dami mga galing na photographer sa Cebu.
00:15:58Especially yung mga groups, diba?
00:16:00Ay, oo, mga clubs din.
00:16:02Mga clubs, sobrang nakakamiss.
00:16:04Ang gagaling pumuha.
00:16:06Oo, diba?
00:16:07Halos dito yung award,
00:16:08puro award dito sa Cebu.
00:16:09Kaya nga.
00:16:10So, I'm so happy na
00:16:12nasa place ako na talagang
00:16:13in-embrace yung photography as an art.
00:16:17Meron din sa Manila.
00:16:18Meron sa Manila.
00:16:19Iba lang yung level.
00:16:20Sa Manila kasi parang napaka-hard.
00:16:22Hard use.
00:16:23Harsh use.
00:16:25Talaga, kami...
00:16:26Lahat-lahat, medyo magulo.
00:16:27Sobra.
00:16:28Kasi siguro, isa yun sa cause ng stress ko before.
00:16:30Kasi masyado akong...
00:16:33in-internalize yung mga...
00:16:36Ayan, may question pala.
00:16:38How do you manage self-care and mental health
00:16:41after covering emotionally heavy stories?
00:16:45Yun nga, exactly.
00:16:46Yan yung question.
00:16:47Parang feeling ko before,
00:16:49kasi cover ako ng cover ng...
00:16:51Lalo na nung night shift ako.
00:16:54Lahat...
00:16:56Pwede pong sabihin?
00:16:57Yung mga ambush, deaths, patayan.
00:17:01Lahat na cover ko na lahat ng klaseng patay na kita ko na.
00:17:04So, parang nag-take siya ng toll sa akin.
00:17:07So, unconsciously siguro,
00:17:09nasa isip ko pa rin siya.
00:17:11Yun yung hindi na-realize ng ibang tao siguro.
00:17:14Yung hard...
00:17:15Yung kano kabigat yung efekto sa'yo
00:17:17na makikita mo araw-araw,
00:17:18gabi-gabi yung mga ganun.
00:17:20Ano yung...
00:17:21Sa tingin mong efekto sa'yo noon?
00:17:23Stress. Sobrang stress.
00:17:25Tapos yun nga, mentally na...
00:17:29Nagkasakit nga ako.
00:17:30So, after yun, nag-lilo talaga ako.
00:17:32But, you know, it's part of the job.
00:17:35So, I need to do my job.
00:17:36Yun talaga.
00:17:41In news writing,
00:17:42we often say no story is worth dying for.
00:17:46Do you think the same applies to photojournalism?
00:17:50No photo is worth dying for,
00:17:52especially when covering sensitive and high-risk stories.
00:17:56Or does the visual impact of certain images
00:17:59justify the risk?
00:18:01Wow.
00:18:08Sir Kenneth?
00:18:09Oo, Kenneth, grabe naman.
00:18:11Pinahirapan mo.
00:18:13Sige.
00:18:15Actually, for me,
00:18:18if...
00:18:19No story.
00:18:20Wala pang ganun kabigat na story
00:18:23na feeling ko pwede kong i-risk yung life ko.
00:18:26Pero when it comes to...
00:18:28Bagdumating yung point siguro talagang meron,
00:18:33I think I'll give up my life
00:18:35just to cover a big story
00:18:37and to show the public what's really happening.
00:18:41Oo.
00:18:42Parang ganun.
00:18:43Parang feeling ko lang,
00:18:44pagdumating yung point,
00:18:45hindi pa siya nangyari ah,
00:18:46pero once kailangan talaga.
00:18:48Kung mamatay man ako sa duty,
00:18:50it's worth it.
00:18:52Same?
00:18:54Same na nasa isip ko?
00:18:56Oo.
00:18:57Siguro ganun talaga pag...
00:18:59Gusto mo talaga makahanap ng magandang story or...
00:19:03story in a photo
00:19:06na makakachange
00:19:08the way people think.
00:19:12Good, in a good way.
00:19:15For example, yung mga war photographers, di ba?
00:19:17Yes, definitely.
00:19:18One example yan yung mga war photographers.
00:19:21Sa isang picture,
00:19:22makachange ng stop war.
00:19:25Instead of dying in a car accident
00:19:27or nonsense accidents,
00:19:29mamatay na lang ako sa coverage.
00:19:31Okay lang.
00:19:32Even yung mga photos
00:19:35ng mga kaibigan natin sa Manila,
00:19:37like Raffi Lerma,
00:19:39Ezra Akayan,
00:19:41mga photos nung war on drugs na...
00:19:45di ba?
00:19:46Ang lakas ng impact sa mga...
00:19:48Yes, hindi lang na-understand siguro yung mental effect nun
00:19:51sa mga photojournalist.
00:19:53Hindi lang siya basta mag-take ng photos.
00:19:55Yung effects nun,
00:19:57yung effect nun sa tao,
00:19:59sa kumuha.
00:20:00So, napakalaking bagay nun.
00:20:05Question.
00:20:06As a female photojournalist,
00:20:07how do you stay motivated and inspired
00:20:10in such a male-dominated
00:20:13and demanding field?
00:20:16Motivated?
00:20:17Every day, I feel motivated.
00:20:19Lalo na dito sa Cebu,
00:20:20kasi parang bago siya sa mata ko, di ba?
00:20:23So every time naaalis ako,
00:20:24pupunta ko sa mga...
00:20:25Like, I just came from Bantayan Island
00:20:28and I'm actually doing a story about
00:20:31islands na walang water
00:20:34and walang tubig.
00:20:36Ay, walang water!
00:20:37Walang water and electricity!
00:20:39Sorry.
00:20:40Tapos...
00:20:41Yeah, so...
00:20:42Yun yung nag-motivate sakin.
00:20:44To look for stories
00:20:47na beyond sa nakikita lang natin.
00:20:49Alam mo yan?
00:20:50To dig deeper sa mga issues.
00:20:53I'm so happy with Carlo
00:20:54kasi is...
00:20:55Like, every week you have a photo story, di ba?
00:20:58So...
00:21:00You always look for something
00:21:01beyond what's obvious.
00:21:04So that's really good.
00:21:05Matters, di ba?
00:21:06Kahit sa kunting...
00:21:08Para sakin, kahit sa kunting story,
00:21:11may matulungan ka man lang.
00:21:12Yan yung motivation.
00:21:14Yeah, and inspiration
00:21:16to create change
00:21:18and to inspire people.
00:21:20Yun yung goal namin bilang photojournalist.
00:21:23Hindi lang yung basta picture lang.
00:21:25Hindi lang.
00:21:26We're not here to take pretty pictures.
00:21:28We're here to take pictures
00:21:31that can change
00:21:32and to inspire.
00:21:34And...
00:21:35Yeah.
00:21:36So yun ang motivation ko araw-araw.
00:21:41Oh!
00:21:42From Ma'am Thea.
00:21:44How do you frame or compose a photo
00:21:47to tell a story?
00:21:51Technical.
00:21:53Just like what I'm...
00:21:54Usap kami kanina about technicalities.
00:21:57So sa coverage,
00:21:59we learned this from our mentor,
00:22:01Sir Albert Garcia.
00:22:04We always take photos
00:22:06first wide shot
00:22:08to have the setting,
00:22:10yung environment mismo.
00:22:12Right?
00:22:13And next is yung...
00:22:16Mid.
00:22:18Mid shot.
00:22:19Meaning...
00:22:20Portraits.
00:22:21Or environmental portraits.
00:22:22May kasamang background,
00:22:23pero a little bit of focus sa subject.
00:22:26And then yung last part is yung close-up.
00:22:28Details.
00:22:29Details.
00:22:30Or emotions.
00:22:31Emotions.
00:22:33So yun, yung three basic shots
00:22:35to tell a story, I think.
00:22:38Pero don't be confined with the rules.
00:22:40Oo.
00:22:41For me, ha?
00:22:42Okay lang yung rules of thirds.
00:22:44Yung mga ganyang golden ratio.
00:22:46Pero I don't really...
00:22:48Kahit blurred pa yan as long as...
00:22:50Pero I don't really follow...
00:22:51You give a story.
00:22:53Or malakasin mo talaga yung photo.
00:22:55Kahit blurred pa yan.
00:22:57It's in the story.
00:22:58Kaya it's different
00:23:00sa ibang practice ng photography.
00:23:02Photojournalism is kinda different
00:23:04because we seek for the truth
00:23:06and we seek for, you know,
00:23:09to tell a story.
00:23:12Okay na lang din kung maganda yung photo,
00:23:14pero mostly yung story talaga.
00:23:17Paano ka pumipili ng story?
00:23:20I mean,
00:23:21parayas nung pinuntahan mo,
00:23:23bantayan.
00:23:26Paano ka napupunta sa ganun?
00:23:29Sa mga friend lang,
00:23:30kontak-kontak lang din.
00:23:32Research.
00:23:33Yeah, research.
00:23:34And binsan, pasyal,
00:23:35tapos makikita mo,
00:23:36bakit ganun?
00:23:37Bakit wala siyang kuryente?
00:23:38But wala siyang tubig?
00:23:39So, alam mo yun,
00:23:41that's the number,
00:23:42isa sa mga,
00:23:44ano,
00:23:45how do you say it?
00:23:46Sa mga attitude ng photojournalist,
00:23:48yung laging curious.
00:23:50Ikaw, di ba,
00:23:51lagi kang curious.
00:23:52Lagi kang mag-ask ng questions.
00:23:54Magtatanong.
00:23:55Magtatanong,
00:23:56yung makulit,
00:23:57yung gumaritas ka lagi,
00:23:59para malaman mo kung anong nangyayari.
00:24:01Right, Carlo?
00:24:02Pero,
00:24:03ano yun, di ba,
00:24:07research ka.
00:24:09Tapos,
00:24:10una,
00:24:13ano yun,
00:24:14bakit ganun?
00:24:15Parang example yung Cueva,
00:24:16bakit may ganun,
00:24:17may kime.
00:24:18Curious ka.
00:24:19Okay, research ka.
00:24:21Tapos yun,
00:24:23try mong,
00:24:25gawa ng story,
00:24:27mga,
00:24:29pwede mong interviews,
00:24:31na,
00:24:34connected dun sa cave,
00:24:36or sa subject, yun.
00:24:39Yeah, so,
00:24:40yeah, laging,
00:24:41stay curious,
00:24:42and,
00:24:43curious.
00:24:44Curious,
00:24:45laging maging curious,
00:24:46and ask questions.
00:24:47Cismoso.
00:24:48Yes, ganyan,
00:24:49dyan mo mong kuha yung mga stories.
00:24:52And,
00:24:53if you want change,
00:24:54di ba,
00:24:55sa society natin,
00:24:56ganyan,
00:24:57sino pa ba gagawa nun?
00:24:59Walang papansin,
00:25:00dapat,
00:25:01gumawa ka ng paraan.
00:25:02So, tell a story,
00:25:04through images,
00:25:05through videos.
00:25:07Speaking,
00:25:08speaking of images,
00:25:09pakita natin yung ano,
00:25:11yung mga ibang,
00:25:13mga photos ni,
00:25:15Bos Jack.
00:25:16Yes.
00:25:17Una natin yung sa,
00:25:19mani.
00:25:20Ay!
00:25:22Nauna.
00:25:24Ayayayaya.
00:25:26Dyan, dyan, dyan.
00:25:29It's true.
00:25:32Can we dissect this photo?
00:25:35Oh yeah, this is a very controversial photo before.
00:25:41I was just new here in Cebu.
00:25:43Let's explain that.
00:25:44And actually, I just went to Pasil.
00:25:46I googled, where is this? I have no intention of going there.
00:25:49You know, you just go there.
00:25:51I looked for an angle where I can fly my drone because I want to see the top.
00:25:56And then, that's the reality.
00:25:58Yes.
00:25:59Actually, this one is a juxtaposition of two opposing images.
00:26:05Of course, the bridge signifies the shortened travel time.
00:26:11You go to Lapu-Lapu and so on.
00:26:13But at the same time, at the bottom, there's poverty.
00:26:19Yes.
00:26:20Right?
00:26:21The bridge signifies the opening time.
00:26:31And I just want to say that you took this photo a week before, right?
00:26:37Yes. Actually, I took that photo a week before the opening.
00:26:41So, yeah.
00:26:42So, that's why.
00:26:45It's just sad because I was so bashed.
00:26:47Because it's sad that people are offended by the photo but not with the poverty.
00:26:52They should be offended by poverty.
00:26:56Right?
00:26:57But I respect your opinion.
00:27:00And it's a democracy.
00:27:05So, okay. Fine.
00:27:06But I'm here.
00:27:08I'm not, you know, a photojournalist.
00:27:12My job is not to, you know, omit or remove images just to please the readers.
00:27:20Other readers, right?
00:27:21That's beautiful.
00:27:22I won't omit that so that they won't feel discomfort or something.
00:27:30So, this is my job, actually.
00:27:32And I was shocked that the reaction was like that.
00:27:36Maybe it's because it was at the same time as the opening.
00:27:38I'm accused of being political or something like that.
00:27:43It's not true, you know?
00:27:45We published these three sets of photos.
00:27:48The first one, the drone shot.
00:27:50We had a drone shot earlier.
00:27:52But this is the one.
00:27:53And the other one.
00:27:54It's actually a complete set.
00:27:57That's the other one.
00:27:59It's just showing the environment.
00:28:01You know?
00:28:02What's there.
00:28:03And that's our job, right?
00:28:05To show where you are and what's happening.
00:28:08And people just focus on this one.
00:28:10But it's okay.
00:28:12But, of course, that's what's there.
00:28:19That's the real photo.
00:28:21Yes.
00:28:22The real story that's inside the photo.
00:28:25Yes.
00:28:26Which is, you know, the strength of the photo.
00:28:30Maybe, yeah.
00:28:32So, anyway, as a photojournalist,
00:28:34I'm not going to turn a blind eye to the sector,
00:28:37the marginalized sectors.
00:28:40They deserve attention.
00:28:43Because all the photographers here in Cebu,
00:28:46they're always featuring this and that.
00:28:48So, I tried to focus.
00:28:50I tried to take a lot.
00:28:52Like, a lot.
00:28:53What's the real situation.
00:28:54From the bottom to the top.
00:28:56So, I'm just telling the truth.
00:28:57And that's our job.
00:28:58That's our job.
00:29:00And this one sparks conversation,
00:29:02even on Yahoo, everything.
00:29:04So, and I think Mayor,
00:29:07they did some talk about it,
00:29:08what to do.
00:29:10And I think I did my job.
00:29:12At least.
00:29:13Right?
00:29:15So, if anyone was offended,
00:29:17it's your…
00:29:19Yeah, and after this,
00:29:22we published this too.
00:29:23That's nice.
00:29:25Right?
00:29:26Yeah.
00:29:27There.
00:29:28This one.
00:29:29This won, right?
00:29:31Yes, in Sinulog.
00:29:32Yes, Sinulog 2025.
00:29:35One of the top photos
00:29:37that won this year's
00:29:40prestigious Sinulog photo contest.
00:29:43In human interest.
00:29:44Human interest.
00:29:46We got this from…
00:29:47Pasil.
00:29:48Pasil.
00:29:49I was late for that.
00:29:50None of you were there.
00:29:52Oh, sorry.
00:29:55It's okay.
00:29:56Oh, my God.
00:29:57Sorry.
00:29:58None of them were there.
00:29:59So, I was the only one there.
00:30:00Because I was late.
00:30:01I was late.
00:30:02So, I'm so thankful
00:30:04that the hood of my lens
00:30:06was gone.
00:30:08But anyway,
00:30:09it's worth it.
00:30:10There's a replacement.
00:30:11Yes.
00:30:12A photo that…
00:30:15Speaking of,
00:30:16it's almost Holy Week.
00:30:17Holy Week.
00:30:19Actually, this one
00:30:20also won in a contest before.
00:30:22This is a drone.
00:30:24What's it called?
00:30:26The one with Godaloupe.
00:30:27Yes, the…
00:30:29The walkway.
00:30:30Yes, yes.
00:30:33That's it.
00:30:34Yes, that's it.
00:30:35Yes.
00:30:37This one is what I'm telling you earlier.
00:30:39This is in Silagon.
00:30:41So, they used to…
00:30:45They used boats
00:30:46to get water
00:30:47from another island
00:30:48to bring it to their island.
00:30:50So, that's how hard it is.
00:30:51Every day,
00:30:52they need to get water.
00:30:54So,
00:30:55we thought
00:30:56Bantayan is a good place
00:30:57for everything.
00:30:58You didn't know that.
00:30:59Is that an island?
00:31:00Yes, it's an island.
00:31:01It's an island.
00:31:03How far is it from…
00:31:04I mean,
00:31:05from Santa Fe?
00:31:08You have to travel
00:31:10by another boat.
00:31:12There's a lot of islets
00:31:14in Bantayan.
00:31:16Mostly, there's no water.
00:31:19Other islands
00:31:20have
00:31:21electricity,
00:31:22but this island
00:31:23doesn't have any.
00:31:25So, I really hope
00:31:26the government will act
00:31:27on this one.
00:31:29Do they still get water
00:31:30from the mainland of Bantayan?
00:31:31Yes.
00:31:32Water.
00:31:33Yes.
00:31:34Drinking water.
00:31:35Because there's no water.
00:31:36Imagine how hard it is.
00:31:37So,
00:31:38we
00:31:39open the faucet,
00:31:41shower,
00:31:42continuously.
00:31:43Imagine other people
00:31:44without water.
00:31:45It's so hard.
00:31:46What if there's a typhoon?
00:31:47Yes.
00:31:48Actually,
00:31:49Yolanda was affected
00:31:50by a typhoon
00:31:51last year.
00:31:53Okay.
00:31:54Drone?
00:31:57This one is in Colón.
00:31:59The demolition
00:32:00before the carbon market.
00:32:03So,
00:32:04with photojournalism,
00:32:06we try to capture emotion.
00:32:09This is a set.
00:32:10Demolition.
00:32:11So, emotion.
00:32:13The raw emotion
00:32:14of a person.
00:32:16Not just a beautiful photo.
00:32:18We try to capture emotion.
00:32:20CPDRC?
00:32:21Yes.
00:32:22Dancing inmates.
00:32:23Dancing inmates.
00:32:26That's the technique
00:32:27in photojournalism.
00:32:28Emotion.
00:32:30This one, election.
00:32:32The election is coming.
00:32:33When is the election?
00:32:342022?
00:32:36Yes.
00:32:37This is 2022.
00:32:38Is that it?
00:32:39Yes.
00:32:40That's it.
00:32:42So,
00:32:43she said,
00:32:44I interviewed the elderly.
00:32:45Even though
00:32:46she can't walk
00:32:47or stand,
00:32:48she doesn't have a wheelchair,
00:32:49but she wants
00:32:50her voice to be heard.
00:32:52You're right.
00:32:55Every vote matters.
00:32:57Even for those things,
00:32:58right?
00:33:00So, yeah.
00:33:01This one,
00:33:03Odette.
00:33:04Odette.
00:33:05Busan.
00:33:06It's really Busan.
00:33:07Yeah, that was Odette.
00:33:08Odette.
00:33:09What is this?
00:33:10In CSRP?
00:33:12Oh, this one is
00:33:13Palarong Pangbansa.
00:33:14Wait a minute.
00:33:15There.
00:33:16That's beautiful.
00:33:17Asia.
00:33:18Okay.
00:33:19What is this?
00:33:20In CSRP?
00:33:22Palarong Pangbansa.
00:33:23Yes, Palarong Pangbansa.
00:33:24This is the first game
00:33:25during Palarong Pangbansa
00:33:26and we're not ready.
00:33:27Actually,
00:33:28the position of the media
00:33:29is not okay.
00:33:30Then, what is that?
00:33:31The first,
00:33:32400 meters,
00:33:33I think.
00:33:34That's it.
00:33:35She's the first.
00:33:36Yes, she's the winner.
00:33:37And actually, yes,
00:33:38sports photography,
00:33:39you don't just need
00:33:40to take photos
00:33:41of the exact.
00:33:42The action.
00:33:43Yes.
00:33:44Get the emotion.
00:33:45After,
00:33:46the finish line,
00:33:47you're done.
00:33:48That's it.
00:33:51There's a question
00:33:53from Sir Kenneth.
00:33:54What makes
00:33:55photojournalism different
00:33:57from other types
00:33:58of photography?
00:34:00For me,
00:34:02the other
00:34:03practice of photography
00:34:05is more on passion,
00:34:07right?
00:34:08Passion to take
00:34:09beautiful photos.
00:34:11For me,
00:34:12the passion of
00:34:13photojournalism
00:34:14is searching
00:34:15for the truth
00:34:16and, you know,
00:34:17looking forward
00:34:18that this photo
00:34:19will change something
00:34:21or will spark
00:34:22a conversation.
00:34:25That's a difference,
00:34:26I think.
00:34:29I just don't want
00:34:30to take beautiful photos,
00:34:32but I totally respect
00:34:33all our photographer
00:34:34colleagues.
00:34:36But photojournalism
00:34:37is different,
00:34:38right?
00:34:39Not beautiful
00:34:40with a story.
00:34:42Yes.
00:34:44It's better
00:34:45if it's mixed.
00:34:46Yes, mixed.
00:34:47So, yes.
00:34:49From Sir Gryll,
00:34:51what are the biggest
00:34:52mistakes aspiring
00:34:53photojournalists make?
00:34:56Biggest mistakes?
00:35:00You, Carlo.
00:35:06Biggest mistake
00:35:08is when you don't
00:35:09listen
00:35:11to
00:35:15Sir Gryll's advice.
00:35:17When you don't listen
00:35:18to the
00:35:19photojournalist.
00:35:21I mean,
00:35:22to your
00:35:23photojournalist
00:35:25who is
00:35:29in my mind.
00:35:32Listen to
00:35:33the photojournalist.
00:35:35To your
00:35:36senior photojournalist.
00:35:38To what
00:35:39is the best
00:35:40thing
00:35:41you will do
00:35:43to shoot.
00:35:46I mean,
00:35:48your path
00:35:50because there are
00:35:53photojournalists
00:35:54around.
00:35:55Yes,
00:35:56there are a lot.
00:36:00Just focus
00:36:02to your work.
00:36:04Try to find
00:36:05stories
00:36:07in your work
00:36:12that your
00:36:13superior
00:36:14told you to do.
00:36:17Just
00:36:18do your best
00:36:20in everything
00:36:21you do.
00:36:24Even if it's a
00:36:25press conference
00:36:28or a simple
00:36:29shoot,
00:36:31do your best.
00:36:32The photo
00:36:33that even
00:36:34the press
00:36:35can't do,
00:36:36how can you
00:36:37do that?
00:36:38It's just a
00:36:39press conference.
00:36:40Even
00:36:41emotions,
00:36:42people,
00:36:43you can get
00:36:44that.
00:36:45Focus.
00:36:46Do you notice
00:36:47that photojournalists
00:36:48when they cover
00:36:49a press conference,
00:36:50a simple
00:36:51press conference,
00:36:52they always
00:36:53wait for
00:36:54gestures.
00:36:55Gestures.
00:36:56Those are
00:36:57the gestures,
00:36:58emotions,
00:36:59the reaction
00:37:00of the eyes.
00:37:01You should
00:37:02be
00:37:03looking at
00:37:04the eyes,
00:37:05the hands.
00:37:06Those times,
00:37:07that's where
00:37:08you'll be
00:37:09pointed.
00:37:12That's my
00:37:13advice.
00:37:14Just focus
00:37:17on the
00:37:18photojournalism
00:37:19to make
00:37:20stories.
00:37:21Don't
00:37:22look around.
00:37:27From Sir
00:37:28Eric,
00:37:29beating the
00:37:30deadline or
00:37:31quality over
00:37:32time,
00:37:33what's more
00:37:34important?
00:37:35Quality.
00:37:36For me,
00:37:37quality.
00:37:42It depends on
00:37:43the coverage.
00:37:44Actually,
00:37:45it's different.
00:37:46Spot news,
00:37:47breaking news,
00:37:48it's different.
00:37:49If it's breaking
00:37:50news,
00:37:51you need to
00:37:52pass it.
00:37:53Even a
00:37:54cellphone photo.
00:37:55Take a picture.
00:37:56Breaking news.
00:37:57As much as
00:37:58possible,
00:37:59do your best.
00:38:00Do your best.
00:38:02So,
00:38:03it should be
00:38:04quality.
00:38:05Like what Carlo
00:38:06is doing,
00:38:07that's quality.
00:38:08The feature
00:38:09stories you're
00:38:10doing,
00:38:11it's not
00:38:12rushed.
00:38:13Actually,
00:38:14I'm doing a
00:38:15story for
00:38:16months now.
00:38:17It's not
00:38:18rushed.
00:38:19There are
00:38:20short-term
00:38:21stories,
00:38:22there are
00:38:23long-term
00:38:24stories.
00:38:25Even if it's
00:38:26a few years,
00:38:27it's long-term.
00:38:28The news is
00:38:29different.
00:38:30It's
00:38:31feature news.
00:38:32Feature news
00:38:33is mostly,
00:38:34it will take
00:38:35time to
00:38:36improve
00:38:37the quality
00:38:38of your
00:38:39story.
00:38:40For
00:38:41breaking news,
00:38:42we need it
00:38:43fast.
00:38:44So,
00:38:45we need to
00:38:46take,
00:38:47what do you
00:38:48call it,
00:38:49Carlo?
00:38:50It's good,
00:38:51but the
00:38:52quality is
00:38:53fast.
00:38:54One thing
00:38:55I can't
00:38:56forget is
00:38:57Ma'am
00:38:58Joan
00:38:59from
00:39:00the
00:39:01Philippines.
00:39:02She
00:39:03said,
00:39:04every time

00:39:07car,
00:39:08she said,

00:39:13just
00:39:14the
00:39:15general

00:39:17That's
00:39:18what I
00:39:19said earlier.
00:39:20Take a
00:39:21photo where
00:39:22people will
00:39:23say,
00:39:24this is
00:39:25different.

00:48:02Yes,

00:48:04take a
00:48:05photo
00:48:06where
00:48:07people will

00:48:09this is
00:48:10that you can share with us.
00:48:12For women photographers,
00:48:14I'd like to
00:48:16you know,
00:48:18I'd like to
00:48:20encourage more
00:48:22women photographers
00:48:24out there.
00:48:26Don't be scared.
00:48:28If you want to be a photojournalist,
00:48:30go.
00:48:32We need to push
00:48:34boundaries.
00:48:36Because
00:48:38the industry is male-dominated.
00:48:42If you go into this
00:48:44to break barriers,
00:48:46the industry
00:48:48will change.
00:48:50It will be inclusive.
00:48:52I hope
00:48:54I inspire some female photographers
00:48:56out there.
00:48:58Don't be scared and be brave.
00:49:00There's a lot of stories
00:49:02waiting
00:49:04for the whole Philippines
00:49:06and the whole world to see.
00:49:08So, I really hope
00:49:10that
00:49:12don't think about all the challenges.
00:49:14It's gonna be worth it in the end.
00:49:16Photojournalism is not
00:49:18going to die.
00:49:20Yes, definitely, even with AI.
00:49:22That's one of the things
00:49:24AI will change.
00:49:26It can help a lot
00:49:28of course. But
00:49:30in photography, the practice
00:49:32that will change is photojournalism
00:49:34for obvious reasons.
00:49:36Because
00:49:38photojournalism
00:49:40is telling the truth.
00:49:44AI is creating
00:49:46images
00:49:48while photojournalism is capturing
00:49:50images.
00:49:52From the mind of a photojournalist.
00:49:54And, AI
00:49:56tips is
00:49:58master the basics.
00:50:00Even if
00:50:02your camera...
00:50:04I'm actually using Canon 70.
00:50:06It's old.
00:50:08Maximize.
00:50:10It's not about the camera,
00:50:12the beauty of the camera.
00:50:14It's about how you look at it.
00:50:16What are your intentions?
00:50:18To tell a story.
00:50:24Always be curious.
00:50:26Tell a story.
00:50:28Be brave.
00:50:30Journalism is not easy.
00:50:32But it's going to be worth it
00:50:34if you are
00:50:36on the right path.
00:50:38If you are in the right place.
00:50:42A question
00:50:44from what I see.
00:50:46What is the difference
00:50:48in getting
00:50:50and being sensitive
00:50:52to the subject?
00:50:56Actually, that question is
00:50:58a good question.
00:51:00Because there's
00:51:02a difference between
00:51:04what you called it Carlo,
00:51:06exploitation
00:51:08and documentation.
00:51:10People should know that.
00:51:12Documentation is preserving
00:51:14and recording
00:51:16the event.
00:51:18Truthfully.
00:51:20While exploitation is different.
00:51:22It's for your own benefit.
00:51:24Manipulating
00:51:26and using it for
00:51:28your own benefit.
00:51:30The job of
00:51:32photojournalist is to document
00:51:34the truth.
00:51:36With this, it comes with ethical standards
00:51:38that we need to follow.
00:51:40With the question,
00:51:42you need to
00:51:44make your decision.
00:51:46Will it be harmful?
00:51:48Will it cause harm?
00:51:50Or does it need to be shown
00:51:52to people
00:51:54as justifiable?
00:51:56If it's justifiable, okay.
00:51:58But if you feel
00:52:00that it will cause harm,
00:52:02then don't publish it.
00:52:04By the way, in news, we're not the only ones
00:52:06who decide. We're not bloggers.
00:52:08We're the only ones who decide.
00:52:10There are a lot of processes
00:52:12that all editors go through.
00:52:14We don't create
00:52:16fake news
00:52:18and things like that.
00:52:20It's actually
00:52:22follow the ethics
00:52:24and standards.
00:52:26Ethical standards of photojournalism.
00:52:28If you think
00:52:30it will cause harm,
00:52:32then don't.
00:52:34Always respect people
00:52:36and always treat your subjects with dignity.
00:52:40Hi, Noel!
00:52:42Sir Noel
00:52:44Pabalete?
00:52:46Bosing!
00:52:48Keep inspiring, idols.
00:52:50I didn't recognize you.
00:52:52I thought it was
00:52:54Boss Noel
00:52:56of
00:52:58FeelStar.
00:53:00Hi, Noel!
00:53:02Can we
00:53:04still have time?
00:53:06Let's go back to the photos
00:53:08of
00:53:10Boss Jack.
00:53:12Boss Noel, I love you!
00:53:16Oh, yeah.
00:53:18Emotions.
00:53:20Masareno.
00:53:22Oh, this one.
00:53:24This is for SK Election.
00:53:26Last day of
00:53:28registration.
00:53:30They're pushing themselves inside the comic.
00:53:32It's really sad.
00:53:34Okay.
00:53:36This is a story of
00:53:38displace
00:53:40Anyway, displace
00:53:42people
00:53:44in a fire.
00:53:46And they're sick.
00:53:48Anyway,
00:53:50I have a consent, so don't worry.
00:53:52And this one is about population.
00:53:54I stayed in Tondo,
00:53:56Baseco, until
00:53:58they went to sleep.
00:54:00I didn't draw you going to sleep.
00:54:02So, I really waited
00:54:04for them to sleep.
00:54:06Yeah, this one's MPD.
00:54:08What does it mean?
00:54:10Drained, perhaps.
00:54:14We always cover
00:54:16disasters.
00:54:18So,
00:54:20this is in Manila?
00:54:22Yes, if there's a fire, we'll go inside.
00:54:28Yes.
00:54:30Rescue.
00:54:36You have to be physically fit
00:54:38because you have to go up and down.
00:54:50From Ryan.
00:54:56Oh.
00:54:58In a fire.
00:55:00Danny.
00:55:04What happened?
00:55:06This is a protest, actually.
00:55:08When covering
00:55:10protests in Manila,
00:55:12there's a lot of action.
00:55:14It's really physical.
00:55:16So, you need to wait
00:55:18for the right moment.
00:55:20You have to be steady with your camera
00:55:22because anything can happen.
00:55:24Like this.
00:55:26Police.
00:55:28Did it hit you?
00:55:30Yes.
00:55:32Did you see that?
00:55:34Your reflexes.
00:55:36It's like that.
00:55:38Actually, in photojournalism,
00:55:40there's no shutter count.
00:55:42We don't have a shutter count
00:55:44because it's continuous.
00:55:46Especially in
00:55:48events like this.
00:55:50This is Yolanda.
00:55:52Tacloban.
00:55:54Sunog.
00:55:56Sunog.
00:55:58Action shots.
00:56:00Reflections. Emotions.
00:56:04This is Taal.
00:56:06Explosion.
00:56:08When was this?
00:56:102020.
00:56:12COVID?
00:56:14Yes.
00:56:16Yes.
00:56:18Then COVID.
00:56:20Is that a drone?
00:56:22I covered Corona.
00:56:24For Manila Bulletin.
00:56:26What's this?
00:56:28Deaths.
00:56:30Drugs.
00:56:32This is before?
00:56:34Before.
00:56:36Before the 13th.
00:56:38I took a break.
00:56:42Is that okay?
00:56:44This is happening.
00:56:46Dolphy died.
00:56:48I covered it.
00:56:50That's historical.
00:56:52I also love taking
00:56:54macro photos.
00:56:56As a side.
00:56:58It helps me relax.
00:57:00Relax photos.
00:57:02Nazareno.
00:57:04It's challenging to cover
00:57:06Nazareno.
00:57:08Framing.
00:57:10In one place.
00:57:12Yes.
00:57:14Emotions. Close up.
00:57:16In one place,
00:57:18Vic already answered this.
00:57:20Morning, Sir Mike.
00:57:22Do you wait
00:57:24for a photo
00:57:26that you know what's going to happen?
00:57:28Sometimes.
00:57:30I know what's going to happen.
00:57:32I wait.
00:57:34Sometimes I stand for 30 minutes.
00:57:36I just stand.
00:57:38I know what's going to happen.
00:57:40Patience.
00:57:42That's what a photojournalist needs.
00:57:44Oh, this one.
00:57:46Earlier, it was a tile.
00:57:48So it bloomed.
00:57:50You should always be an observant.
00:57:52Details.
00:57:54Reflection.
00:57:58Protest.
00:58:00This one is a robbery.
00:58:02I used it
00:58:04underneath.
00:58:06My shoes are there.
00:58:08It's a composition.
00:58:10What's that blue?
00:58:14I think it's a member of the police.
00:58:16They checked it.
00:58:18That's where I used it.
00:58:20Taal.
00:58:26It's so green.
00:58:28You thought it was edited.
00:58:30But it's not.
00:58:32It's really like that.
00:58:36Yolanda.
00:58:38Reflections.
00:58:40Framing.
00:58:43Did you go to Sambuanga?
00:58:45They sent you to Albert.
00:58:47That's one of the last coverages before I got sick.
00:58:49The Sambuanga Siege.
00:58:51That's it.
00:58:53Oh, it's gone.
00:58:55The Sambuanga Siege.
00:58:57The displaced people.
00:59:05Okay.
00:59:07So,
00:59:10today is Monday
00:59:12here in Pitik.
00:59:14I hope you had
00:59:16many opportunities
00:59:18to be with
00:59:20Boss Jack
00:59:22here in
00:59:24Sunstar, Pitik.
00:59:28Any words of wisdom?
00:59:30I hope I inspired
00:59:32someone to take
00:59:34photojournalism.
00:59:36Thank you, Boss Jack,
00:59:38for sharing.
00:59:40Welcome, Carlo.
00:59:42Thank you so much.
00:59:46Next is
00:59:48Travel Photographer.
00:59:52That's on Monday
00:59:54from 6 to 7 pm.
