Ollie Westbury on the collapse of Shrewsbury's potential takeover
Transcript
00:00The sun might be shining outside but it's certainly not shining on Shrewsbury Town Football
00:06Club right now as their takeover has collapsed. An American businessman who was interested
00:11in buying the football club has withdrawn his offer to purchase Shrewsbury Town and
00:16the Crown Meadow and Town are now almost back where they started. Reports first, well the
00:23takeover was initially thrown into doubt when Gareth Ainsworth left last week to leap to
00:27Gillingham, a move that was a bit of a head-scratcher for everybody. We understood that at that
00:36stage the takeover hadn't collapsed. The former Shrewsbury head coach believed that it was
00:41potentially unlikely that it would go through though and now we have official confirmation.
00:49Obviously there was reports surfaced on Sunday morning that it had collapsed and Shrewsbury
00:55now find themselves in a real pickle. They're bottom of the league on table, they're 14
01:01points from safety. It was a disappointing result, well a terrible result, 4-1 loss to
01:05Birmingham City at the weekend and it goes from bad to worse and the bad news just keeps
01:09on rumbling on. It's important to stress that for all the talk of the takeover, what you
01:18don't want is somebody to buy the club that doesn't want it. Obviously of course if this
01:22gentleman who has been in talks to own the football club and to be the custodian of it,
01:29if he does not want it then it's not in anybody's interests for that deal to be completed. But
01:34it certainly feels like a huge waste of Shrewsbury's time as they are seeking succession, as Rowland
01:40Whitley who has been in charge of the football club for 29 years, as they seek to progress
01:47the club and move it forward, it certainly feels like everybody's time has been wasted
01:52as Shrewsbury are unable to get that deal. We await some form of communication from the
02:00football club themselves but as to the moment it's an incredibly difficult situation for
02:09all involved. After a very difficult week, Ainsworth walking out, Appleton going, reports
02:13yesterday and now more bad news today. When is it ever going to get better for Shrewsbury
02:18Town?
