Chipmaking giant TSMC hosted a ceremony at its site currently under construction in southern Kaohsiung, which is slated to produce 2-nanometer processors, the most advanced chips yet. TSMC is on track to mass produce the latest technology later this year. Recently, the firm has been in hot water domestically, after pledging a combined total of US$165 billion to its operations in the U.S.

00:00TSMC is doubling down on its operations here in Taiwan by giving a rare glimpse into one
00:06of its factories that will be making its valuable two-nanometer processors, the most advanced
00:13chip technology available in the world.
00:16The site, Fab 22 in Kaohsiung, is said to be the only other place outside the firm's
00:22headquarters further north in Hsinchu to make the two-nanometer nodes.
00:27These are on track to hit mass production later this year.
00:31It's a class of chip TSMC says is faster and more efficient, and is expected to create
00:36end products worth about two trillion U.S. dollars within five years.
00:42The TSMC has been working to dispel fears that it could lose its tech advantage to other
00:47countries.
00:48Just this month, its head, C.C. Wei, was at the White House with U.S. President Donald
00:53Trump, pledging massive added investments to the U.S. to build six more facilities in
00:59Arizona.
01:00Some in Taiwan worry that with more of TSMC's advanced chips available on American soil,
01:06Washington could have less interest in supporting the country, a national security concern given
01:12Beijing's continued threat to invade.
01:16TSMC and Taiwan's president have both reassured the public that the chipmaker's most advanced
01:21tech will stay in Taiwan, a message alluded to at this ceremony as well by both TSMC's
01:29executive vice president, Y.P. Chin, and the country's premier, Zuo Rongtai.
01:34In chips, the goal of TSMC's competitors is to try and hit a moving target.
01:39These chips are constantly improving and becoming more sophisticated.
01:44So with two-nanometer nodes on track for mass production in Taiwan later this year, the
01:50country is still ahead of the game for years to come.
