00:00A confronting re-enactment of a real-life tragedy near Palmerston.
00:11Hundreds of Top End high school students watched in horror as a dramatised vehicle collision
00:16unfolded.
00:17Going through the front windscreen of a car is sure to be fatal.
00:23Every year, road safety group AANT runs Street Smart High, an interactive program aimed at
00:29saving lives, hearing from doctors, parents and police, and crash survivors themselves.
00:35I spent a few weeks in the ICU at RDH, a shopping list of injuries, but the most significant
00:43was I ended up losing my left arm.
00:45What you see here in the simulation or at the actual event is just the part of it, there's
00:49that huge flow on effect throughout the emergency services.
00:52The Northern Territory has the highest road fatality rate in Australia, with deaths occurring
00:58at a rate 3.2 times higher than the national average.
01:02Young drivers under 25 are especially vulnerable, which is why road safety education is critical.
01:09I don't think young people think about the actual consequences in life.
01:15It's so much more real when you see it and it was a bit scary.
01:18Just when you jump in a vehicle, put your seatbelt on.
01:21So just don't drink and drive, don't take drugs before driving, keep your phone away
01:26and just stay safe.
01:27If I do end up driving, I'll make sure I do the right thing.
01:31Even when I'm in a passenger, I'll make sure other drivers are doing the right thing.
01:35I'd much rather these kids see it here rather than in real life.
01:40Critical lessons that could one day save a life.
